Opis:
The network of faults and joints within the Mesozoic, Miocene and Pleistocene–Holocene formations was studied in the Rio Colca valley, in the Pinchollo–Lari–Maca area (Central Andes, southern Peru). A complex, multi-phase development of these structures was revealed. The results show that the structural framework of the Rio Colca valley consists of WNW–ESE and NE–SW faults, and a few W–E faults. The strike of the most common fault sets is approximately parallel (longitudinal) or perpendicular (transverse) to the W–E oriented strike of stratification surfaces in the Mesozoic sedimentary series and the W–E fold macro-structures, developed in these strata. Diagonal faults and joints are less common, although at some localities they are numerous. The recurrence of major fault systems throughout the Mesozoic and Miocene series and the Pleistocene–Holocene (mainly colluvial) deposits is proof of recent, tectonic activity in the study area. The recent faulting has led to the development of a system of distinct, primary fault scarps, tectonic grabens and horsts, as well as open fissures, which are well marked in the surface morphology, and in many cases have not yet been eroded.

Opis:
The article presents the likely cause of cracks in the continental and oceanic lithospheric plates, and the probable causes of earthquakes initiating Earth’s speed changes. As the root cause of one of the earthquakes, the author adopts a rotational speed of the globe (reasons: changes of the ocean level, convection currents, or a change in the ice cover) causing the formation of small d’Alambert’s forces with a latitudinal direction, which affect the tectonic plates. The author shows that there is a natural amplifier in the lithosphere, which converts the small d’Alambert’s forces into forces capable of moving tectonic plates on the asthenosphere. The energy to produce the drift of tectonic plates comes from the potential energy of water column in the oceans and some lakes. Thus, the author also explains where the continent-moving forces come from, unlike AlfredWegener who was not able tounravelthis. It should be emphasized that the earthquake in 2011 (Fukushima) occurred during theEarth’s speed change. Current hypotheses should be re-examined and the reason for tectonic plate drift should be re-considered taking into account the hydrostatic pressure – a factor influencing the water column in the oceans and some lakes, and affecting the change in rotation speed of the Earth. The author believes that it is appropriate to carry out work to identify a close relationship between the changes in the Earth’s speed and earthquakes initiated by these changes, which would allow to forecast some earthquakes.

Opis:
The Early Kimmeridgian succession in the Rogaszyn Quarry at Kodrąb (Radomsko elevation) represents mostly shallow-water carbonate platform deposits that, over wide areas of central Poland were controlled by the activity of the tectonic zone being the prolongation of the Holy Cross lineament. The ammonites collected enable precise recognition of ammonite zones – the Platynota and the Hypselocyclum zones, some subzones and horizons. The precise dating enables detailed correlation of the particular units of the succession with those recognized at the eastern and northern borders of the Wieluń Upland and the NW margin of the Holy Cross Mts. The deposits at Kodrąb from the top of the Planula Zone, through the Platynota Zone, up to the lower part of the Hypselocyclum Zone, reveal markedly smaller thicknesses equaling ~15–20% of those of coeval deposits from the adjoining areas. The differences in sedimentary evolution at Kodrąb during the Early Kimmeridgian resulted mostly from local synsedimentary tectonic movements of fault blocks. Beginning from the late Hypselocyclum Chron, these differences markedly diminished, which resulted from the uniform subsidence of a wider area, and disappearance of the shallow-water deposits of the carbonate platforms, being replaced by deeper-water deposits of the Burzenin Formation.

The Early Kimmeridgian of the Wieluń Upland and adjoining regions, after the decline of sedimentation of the deep-neritic sponge megafacies (Częstochowa Sponge Limestone Fm.) and associated limestones and marls with poor benthic fauna (Pilica Fm.) during the Planula Chron, showed the subsequent development of moderately shallow-water biostromal chalky limestones with siliceous sponges and corals, replaced laterally by micritic limestones and marls (Prusicko Fm.) during the Platynota Chron and the earliest Hypse¬locyclum Chron. Towards the north and south shallow-marine carbonate platforms occurred (represented by deposits of the “oolitic” fm.), whereas towards the north-west and west deeper marine facies, represented initially by limestones with siliceous sponges (Częstochowa Sponge Limestone Fm.), and later during the Hypselocyclum Chron by bedded limestones and marls with ammonites (Burzenin Fm.) were deposited. This palaeogeographic pattern was controlled by the synsedimentary tectonics. The detailed biostratigraphical classification of the deposits studied from the Platynota to the Divisum zones, and their lithological character, enable the recognition of the primary sedimentary cyclicity by comparison with the well dated short eccentricity cycles in the coeval succession of south-eastern France. The two appendixes enclosed give the characteristics of: (1) the characteristics of the ammonite faunas especially of the families Ataxiocerati¬dae and Aulacostephanidae (where two new species are established – Balticeras samsonowiczi sp. nov., and Rasenioides glazeki sp. nov.); (2) the newly established lithostratigraphical units: the Prusicko Fm., and the Burzenin Fm., and the smaller rank units (members, beds) recognized therein.

The Szamotuły Graben covers the southernmost part of the Permo-Mesozoic Poznań–Szamotuły Fault Zone. Along this regional discontinuity there are several salt structures, including the Szamotuły diapir, over which an extensional graben formed in the Paleogene and Neogene. The graben is located north of Poznań in central-western Poland, and is NW–SE-trending, ~20 km long, 3–5.5 km wide, and up to 160 m deep. It is filled with Lower Oligocene and Neogene sediments, including relatively thick lignite seams. Data from boreholes allow the assignment of the graben-fill sediments to appropriate lithostratigraphic units. Furthermore, analysis of changes in the thickness of these units provides evidence for periods of accelerated graben subsidence or uplift relative to its flanks. As a result, two distinct stages of tectonic subsidence and one inversion in the Paleogene–Neogene evolution of the Szamotuły Graben have been distinguished. Thus, relatively significant subsidence occurred in the Early Oligocene and the middle Early–earliest Mid-Miocene, while slight inversion took place in the middle part of the Mid-Miocene.

Many geological problems have not been convincingly explained so far and are debatable, for instance the origin and changes of the Neogene depositional environments in central Poland. Therefore, these changes have been reconstructed in terms of global to local tectonic and climatic fluctuations. The examined Neogene deposits are divided into a sub-lignite unit (Koźmin Formation), a lignite-bearing unit (Grey Clays Member), and a supra-lignite unit (Wielkopolska Member). The two lithostratigraphic members constitute the Poznań Formation. The results of facies analysis show that the Koźmin Formation was deposited by relatively high-gradient and well-drained braided rivers. Most likely, they encompassed widespread alluvial plains. In the case of the Grey Clays Member, the type of river in close proximity to which the mid-Miocene low-lying mires existed and then were transformed into the first Mid-Miocene Lignite Seam (MPLS-1), has not been resolved. The obtained results confirm the formation of the Wielkopolska Member by low-gradient, but mostly well-drained anastomosing or anastomosing-to-meandering rivers. The depositional evolution of the examined successions depended on tectonic and climatic changes that may be closely related to the mid-Miocene great tectonic remodelling of the Alpine-Carpathian orogen. This resulted in palaeogeographic changes in its foreland in the form of limiting the flow of wet air and water masses from the south and vertical tectonic movements.

Opis:
This study addresses the complex geology caused mainly by tectonic and glaciotectonic processes in lignite-bearing areas of Poland. Tectonics played a dominant role in the deformation of peat/lignite seams during their deposition. This is especially true for deep grabens where the thickest lignite seams were deposited (e.g., Bełchatów). Conversely, glaciotectonics led to the post-depositional deformation of other deposits (e.g., Sieniawa). The effects of tectonic and glaciotectonic processes in this region are investigated using both simplified geological cross-sections and photography. The size, depth and architecture of the glaciotectonic structures verified in this study demonstrate the importance of their consideration during the exploration and exploitation stages of such lignite deposits, as well as the planning of construction projects in areas strongly transformed by glaciotectonics.
Dotyczy to zwłaszcza głębokich rowów tektonicznych, w których zalegają najgrubsze pokłady węglowe, np. złoża: Bełchatów, Szczerców, Turów, Lubstów, Pątnów I-IV, Adamów, itd. Natomiast glacitektonika prowadziła do postsedymentacyjnych deformacji polskich pokładów węgla brunatnego.

Opis:
Neptunian sills at Rocca Busambra, a fragment of the Trapanese/Saccense Domain in western Sicily, host the most abundant ammonite and gastropod fauna which has ever been recorded from the Jurassic of the western Tethys. The fauna is dominated by parautochthonous organisms which were swept into the sills by gentle transport. Ammonites are characterized by perfect preservation and small size, a feature which is due to the predominance of microconchs but also of stunting. The most complete sill is 0.7 m thick and could be separated into 17 levels which range in age from the early Toarcian into the late Kimmeridgian, thus representing the most extreme case of palaeontologically and depositionally documented stratigraphic condensation in Earth history. The unique feature of the Rocca Busambra sills is due to the interaction of three processes: extreme stratigraphic condensation on the sea floor, weak tectonic fracturing of the host rock and repeated reopening on top of already existing sills. Contrasting percentages of gastropods in individual levels reflect sea-level oscillations which correspond to long known low- and highstands during the Jurassic of the western Tethys. Comparisons with other ammonite-bearing sill faunas reveal several similarities, but represent only short-timed phases of tectonic pulses and deposition.

Various structural observations were collected in southwestern Podhale Trough during investigations for Detailed map of Tatra Mts., scale 1 : 10 000. Fault surfaces, strikes and dips of beds and fold axes were measured in the field. Statistical analysis of results allow to recognize 5 groups of dislocations with variable types of movement, directions and age: 1) slickensides onW-E striking, almost horizontal bedding surfaces show reverse motion towards S, 2) steeply-dipping (80–90(centigrade)) faults, striking parallel to bedding and also showing reverse motion towards S, 3) vertical transcurrent faults associated with main tectonic zones, striking almost N-S, 4) normal faults striking ca 38(centigrade) (NE-SW) and 135(centigrade) (NW-SE). Attitudes of beds different from regional trend were separated. Deviations are caused by flexural bending along tectonic zones. Anomalous attitudes of beds coincide with directions of dislocations recognized in the field. A map of lineaments in the study area is also presented. Analysis of landforms on Digital Terrain Model (DTM) led to recognition of series of lineaments related to either tectonic structures or lithology. Main transverse tectonic zones were identified on the map of lineaments: Chochołowski Potok-Czarny Dunajec, Kooecieliski Potok, Mała Łąka; as well as some minor faults and zones where particular directions of faults predominate. Statistic analysis of directions of tectolineaments allows to recognize 4 main directions: 1) about 90°, associated to thrusts and folds (parallel to strikes of beds), 2) N-S and slightly oblique directions associated to transcurrent zones, 3) approximately 40(centigrade) and 4) 140(centigrade) directions associated to normal faults. Results obtained using these 3 methods (analysis of field data, analysis of DTM, analysis of attitudes of beds different from regional trend) are consistent with each other.

Majority of ca. 90 sites ofsandstone crag groups and individual crags, occurring in the Świętokrzyskie (Holy Cross) Mts. region, represent the following crag-forming lithostratigraphic units: Cambrian Wiśniówka Formation, Devonian Barcza Fm and Zagórze Fm, Triassic Zagnańsk Fm and Krynki Beds, as well as Jurassic Skloby Fm and Ostrowiec Fm. Specific features of these rocks are the occurrence of sandstone series, up to 20 m thick, above more plastic, clayey or heterolithic series, high-energy depositional environments, and siliceous composition. The crag-forming sandstones differ in the amount of siliceous cement: from strongly cemented Paleozoic quartzitic sandstones to porous Mesozoic sandstones with poor cement, which determines diverse mechanical properties. Strongly cemented Paleozoic rocks display high rock strength and abrasion resistance, while porous and theoretically friable Mesozoic sandstones are characterised by high grain packing due to compaction. Regarding the principal role of gravitational disinte¬gration of rock massifs under the periglacial conditions in the Pleistocene, other factors constraining the crag formation and shaping are the tectonic situation of rocks (orientation of strata and joints), adequate joint spacing, and bed thickness. The interrelations between lithological and structural features of crag-forming sandstones and tectonics, conditioning erosion and weathering rates are specific for particular types of these sandstones.

The central (Paleozoic) and the south-western (Permian-Mesozoic) parts of the Holy Cross Mts. region are areas of typical structural morphology controlled by fold-type tectonic structure and lithology. In the northern (Mesozoic) marginal part of the region structural arrangement of main relief elements is not so clear due to the block-type tectonics, however, some morphological features, such as the valley network, elongation of glacial, kame-type landforms and orientation of rock cliffs are related to joint system. The general relief elements of part of the Nida Basin region adjoining the Holy Cross Mts. are of noeotectonic origin, while the subordinate landforms represent typical structural morphology. The role of recent tectonic factor should be also taken into account in the Holy Cross Mts., however, the identification of tectonic influence on the current relief of this region is very difficult.

The paper presents three examples of interpretations of geological events and paleogeographic and paleoenvironmental conditions made on the basis of studies of karst forms in Devonian carbonate rocks of the Świętokrzyskie (Holy Cross) Mountains, central Poland. The first study concerns paleokarst forms in two sites: Wietrznia and Jaworznia which record the Late Permian relief evolution and its tectonic rejuvenation at the beginning of the Triassic period. The next two interpretations concern the Cenozoic karst forms. Analysis of spatial development of subsurface karst systems made possible to determine of erosional base stabilization levels during the Neogene. The highest karst horizon (Łagów) was most probably related to the level of one of the transgressions in the Fore-Carpathian marine basin. In turn, the study of sand sediments filling karst forms, particularly analysis of roundness and shape of sand grains enables to distinguish five types of sand grains of different genesis, among which are grains originated from various local weathered rocks as well as pyrogenic particles. On the basis of this analysis the extent of Lower Triassic cover was determined and karst development during the Quaternary period was assessed, as well as some suggestions on the Neogene paleoenvironment were formulated.

Opis:
The Upper Cretaceous of the Elbe Valley in Saxony and the erosion outliers west of it mark an Upper Cretaceous NW-SE-running strait between the Westsudetic Island in the NE and the Mid-European Island to the west. This street connected the NW-German-Polish Basin in the north and the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin (and adjacent regions of the Tethys) in the south. However, post-Cretaceous erosion north of Meißen removed any Upper Cretaceous deposits but erosion outliers at Siebenlehn and especially north of the Forest of Tharandt proof the presence of a marly through silty belt in this area. Three transgressions (base of uppermost Lower to Middle Cenomanian, base of Upper Cenomanian and base of the geslinianum Zone in the mid-Upper Cenomanian) have taken place. The sedimentation was influenced by the topography of the mentioned islands and by movements at structural lines in the Proterozoic and Palaeozoic basement. During the early Late Cenomanian, a marly-silty sedimentation (Mobschatz Formation) in the north existed besides sandy sedimentation in the south (Oberhäslich Formation). The transgression at the base of the geslinianum Zone caused the final submergence of island chains between Meißen, Dresden and Pirna, and a litho- and biofacies bound to cliffs and submarine swells formed. A silty-marly lithofacies, a mixed sandy-silty lithofacies (Dölzschen Formation) and a sandy lithofacies in the south (Sächsisches Elbsandsteingebirge) co-existed during the latest Cenomanian. The first mentioned biofacies yields a rich fauna mainly consisting of oysters, pectinids, rudists, and near-shore gastropods accompanied by echinids and, in some cliffs, teeth of sharks. The Pennrich fauna (Häntzschel 1933; Uhlig 1941) especially consists of the very common serpulids Pyrgopolon (P.) septemsulcata and Glomerula lombricus (formerly Hepteris septemsulcata and G. gordialis).

Opis:
In the village of Pobroszyn near Opatów, a faulted section of Ordovician deposits represented by upper Tremadoc clayey-silty lithofacies, upper Arenig carbonate-phosphorite lithofacies and Upper Ordovician claystones with limestone interbeds, were identified. The upper Tremadoc is dated on basis of acritarch. This is the first time that upper Tremadoc deposits have been documented in the Łysogóry region. The late Arenig transgressive deposits were probably preceded by emergence in the latest Tremadoc and early Arenig. The Ordovician rocks from Pobroszyn are intensely tectonised. Two groups of faults, oblique and longitudinal, are distinguished. The first one strikes from 120-140°, and dip to NE at 40-45°, and the second one that strikes 15-25° and dips 65-80° to E.
