Opis:
The purpose of this article is to present the potential of metaphors and their use in teaching qualitative research methodology. Starting with the review of the most important achievements in the field of using metaphors as an object of knowledge and a cognitive tool, I will go on to describe the genesis of interest in metaphors in didactics. I will present the process of experimenting with the use of metaphors during methodological classes and the obtained results, both at the content level (i.e. discovering metaphors for qualitative research) and at the procedural level (i.e. reconstructing ways of working with a metaphor in class), all of which also refers to, albeit indirectly, to research. At the same time, in the article, I make a definition-related distinction between two general types of qualitative research, which emerged while working with metaphors.

Opis:
The use of computer-assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) for the organization and analysis of qualitative data has been a hotly debated topic among qualitative researchers since the inception of the technology in the 1980s (Smith & Hesse-Biber, 1996; and Bong, 2002). Proponents of the software claim that QDAS can help strengthen the validity, reliability, and accuracy of data analysis, whereas critics have cautioned that the use of such software distances the researchers from the data and attempts to make the data objective (Saldaña, 2013). The debates surrounding the use of qualitative software have contributed to a lack of student training in academic settings. Consequently, few studies have examined the student experience and decision-making process regarding the use of QDAS in the university setting (Paulus, Woods, Atkins, & Mackin, 2015). Using reflective response data collected from participants of a beginner qualitative coding workshop, this paper adds to the limited literature on student experiences using QDAS by examining gender differences in how participants critically reflected on their first experience using QDAS and examines the likelihood that participants would use QDAS in their future work. Findings from this study indicate that participants who used QDAS for the first time perceived that there are more potential benefits to using QDAS versus manual coding. Gender differences were present with female participants strongly believing that the software would allow them to be more effective and efficient researchers, and male participants believing that they would be better able to gain deeper insights into their data.

Opis:
Reflection in teacher development is important as it can help both experienced and novice teachers to better understand the processes they are involved in. It can also be used to aid evaluation processes. This paper presents a small scale study that involved undergraduate English philology students from Gdańsk University who were studying for the teacher specialisation. One of its purposes was to trial a strategy for feedback that could be used to mediate an already existing model of assessment for students’ taught lessons, which previous to the study used only a prescribed set of assessment criteria. Another purpose was to promote a reflective turn in both the student-teacher and academic mentor (myself), which would then inform the discussions that took place after each observed lesson. In addition to this, I was interested to find out if this strategy would generate a suitable quality and quantity of information, so that it might be used for further research. Overall, the strategy proved a useful aid to reflection in relation to the students’ teaching practices. As a research tool, it also generated usable data.

This study determined the level of assessment of subjects with CBT (Computer-Based-Training) application among marine engineering students of John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University-Molo, Iloilo City. The participants in this study were the randomly selected one hundred and thirty-three (133) marine engineering students of JBLFMU-Molo, Iloilo City who had taken subjects with CBTs. The present study employed quantitative-qualitative research design by Creswell (2013). Results reveal the following: (1) review with CBT or CBTR review is the mostly utilized subject because this is needed in the marine engineering licensure examinations; (2) level of assessment of CBTs is excellent; (3) no significant differences in the assessment of CBTs were found out among marine engineering students as classified according to different variables such as academic performance, students’ classification, type of students, and section.

Opis:
The paper has 3 objectives: (i) identify QoL determinants of Russian Students; (ii) assess their relevance for decision-making when choosing life strategies; (iii) recognize their implications for academic teaching. The research sample were students from two Russian Universities. The study employed: literature analysis;exploratory research (direct individual in-depth interviews, survey based on a self-administered, web-based questionnaire with single-answer, limited choice qualitative & quantitative questions and gradings based on the Likert-type scale); explanatory research (informal moderated group discussions). The research findings show the relatively high significance of finance, career, stability, family, free time and other non-material QoL determinants. Research analysis reveals an inconsistency between respondents’ expectationsand their work-life balance, which imposes a question about decision-makingcriteria at an early stage of career planning and the role of tertiary educationin this process. Implications & Recommendations: (i) multicriteri decision-making processes, such as career planning, should comprise worklife balance; therefore both material and non-material QoL determinants should be incorporated into the analysis; (ii) as the role of Universities, beside educating, is also to guide and shape characters, Academia seems to be the right place for this task; (iii) therefore Universities should promote conscious lecturers as assistants to the process of identification of individual QoL determinants by their students. Contribution & Value Added: the research provides a fresh and improved perspective on quality of life and its determinants; it includes non-material QoL components and therefore brings qualitative determinants into economic research; it will provide data future comparisons; it comes from a research network linking European and Russian tertiary education institutions and University lecturers with intercultural teaching experience.

This study presents the partial results of empirical research on historical consciousness among pupils, students and teachers in Czech schools implemented in 2011. Mixed qualitative and quantitative research was performed (focus groups, questionnaires, in-depth interview) with a group of 2524 respondents from 9 regions in the Czech Republic. This article clarifies its theoretical and methodological basis, and presents findings related to the factors shaping historical consciousness, especially incentives leading to interest in history, preferred sources of information about history, subjective evaluation of influences determining the development of human history, and respondents’ concepts of historical development. Research results are being compared with the results of previous studies, including international studies.
