Opis:
Aim/purpose – Though psychological capital has become a hot topic in the recent years, scholars have given little attention to its antecedents. This study used the job characteristics model (Hackman & Oldham, 1975) as a framework to examine the relationship between the five job characteristics and the four components of psychological capital. Moreover, task performance is examined as an outcome of psychological capital. Design/methodology/approach – Using structural equation modelling, data were obtained from Egyptian professionals (N = 251). The survey included measures of psychological capital and job characteristics as well as task performance, which was rated by employees’ supervisors. Findings – Results indicate that the five job characteristics of skill variety, task significance, job feedback, job identity and job autonomy are positively related to the four components of psychological capital. Moreover, hope, self-efficacy and resilience were positively related to task performance. However, Egyptian employees’ optimism was not found to be related to task performance. Research implications/limitations – Results contribute to a better understanding of what enhances psychological capital in the workplace. Originality/value/contribution – The current study is the first to integrate the theory of work design with the psychological capacities of hope, optimism, resilience and self- -efficacy. Research on the development of psychological capital has been limited to interventions with little or no attention given to macro or organisational factors that could contribute to its enhancement. Moreover, it is the first to link psychological capital to job performance in an Arab country.

At present, social media are connected with education. Both influence daily life and studying since they impact formal and informal relations. This study explores the role of social media in task performance. Based on Mackworth’s clock test, we experimented with university students (N=54), which assessed their capacity to concentrate on the task when exposed to notifications from social networking. We explored whether the appearance of social media notifications regarding different stimulus properties (i.e., sound and vision) lowered cognitive resource capacity to concentrate on the main task. The findings revealed that the mere presence of notifications affected task performance. However, the focal relationship was more complex.

Heat stress on workers working outdoors in the power industry may result in fatigue and deterioration in task performance. This research collected and analyzed data on task performance of workers working indoors and outdoors with and without a cooling suit. The task performance was compared on the basis of heart rate, oxygen consumption, tympanic temperature, subjective responses, productivity, and error rates. Based on One-Way Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA) results, a significantly lower estimated working oxygen consumption was observed (p < .001) when the cooling suit was worn. The productivity was higher while workers wore the cooling suit as compared to no cooling suit (p = .011) whereas the error rates were significantly lower (p < .001). Also a significantly lower self-reported discomfort was observed in the neck and shoulders while working wearing the cooling suit (p = .004). This study concluded that wearing a cooling suit while working outdoors was associated with physiological benefits as well as improved task performance of the study participants.

This paper presents a study in which the main objective was to investigate the combined effect of noise and vibration on the performance of a readability task in a mobile driving environment. Subjects performed a readability task on a laptop computer in a sitting posture with their backs supported with a backrest under varying levels of noise and vibration. The data in terms of the mean number of characters read per minute were collected and statistically analyzed. Results showed that the individual effect of noise, vibration, and the operators’ gender as well as the interaction between gender and noise, and gender and vibration were statistically significant. However, the combined effect of noise and vibration was not found to be statistically significant. Results also indicated that gender was statistically significant at all levels of noise as well as vibration, and noise and vibration were statistically significant at both levels of gender.

Opis:
Given the lowering of trade barriers among nations, the internet revolution, and a resultant increase in the bargaining power of consumers, coupled with the economic impact of COVID-19 pandemic, firms are increasingly forced to make use of a high performing workforce. It is to raise the quality of their products and/or services as global competition for the consumer’s money severely punishes inefficiencies. As a result of this, it has become imperative for organizational researchers to determine the important antecedents of employee task performance. Hence, the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the domain-based self-efficacy and employee task performance. Drawing on the Social Cognitive Theory, we propose that there is a relationship between these two variables, and that the relationship is moderated by emotional intelligence, with the view of shedding light on the inconsistent nature of the results from previous studies. Through the descriptive survey research design, the multi-stage sampling technique was applied in eliciting data from a total of 342 employees of the Nigerian banking industry who are employed in the customer services sector. From the simple moderation analysis conducted after utilizing the Process macro, results indicate that there is a positive and significant relationship between domain-based self-efficacy and task performance. However, emotional intelligence moderates this relationship in such a way that the positive relationship between self-efficacy and task performance was weaker among subjects who reported a higher level of emotional intelligence. In the light of these findings, it was recommended for managers particularly in the banking industry to set up intervention strategies that have the potentials of promoting a desirable level of domain-based self-efficacy among their employees while also ensuring that an optimal mix of emotional intelligence both within and across components is promoted with the view of achieving a desirable moderating impact of this relationship.

The effects of human age, type of computer, and noise on computer operators’ performance of a data entry task were investigated. Twenty male subjects aged 10–55 were assigned into 4 age groups each consisting of 5 persons. They performed the task for 15 min on desktop and laptop computers in a sitting posture under varying levels of noise. The mean number of characters entered per minute (MNCEPM) was statistically analyzed. Operators in the 16–25 age group achieved the highest rate of data entry at each level of noise investigated. Operators performed better on desktop than on laptop computers. Their performance decreased when noise level increased from 82 to 92 dB(A), but it improved at 102 dB(A). The effects of age and noise were statistically significant. However, the effects of the type of computer, the interactions between age and type of computer, age and noise level, and type of computer and noise were not found to be statistically significant.

Thesis. The aim of the study was to determine the level of achievement motivation of future primary school teachers during remote learning, as well as to describe each of the study dimensions characterising the achievement motivation. Methods. The study involved 162 (N=162) first-course students from Latvia, two of them were male. The study raised three research questions. RQ1: At what level do students assess each of the study dimensions that characterise the achievement motivation? RQ2: What factors hinder students from taking the initiative in the study process? RQ3: How do students monitor the quality of task performance? This paper defined five study dimensions to be assessed by students: initiative, persistence, quality of task performance, self-efficacy, seizing and exploiting opportunities. Results. The study found that four of the previously mentioned dimensions were highly assessed by the students. The dimension that characterises the persistence was assessed at a medium level. The students believe that lack of time, family conditions, and full-time work accompanying their study are the most common factors that hinder learning initiatives. To monitor the quality of task performance, most students bear in mind the assessment criteria provided by the lecturer, which are used as indicators to achieve an excellent result. Conclusion. The study concluded that the students also have a high motivation for achievement when studying remotely. In further studies, it is necessary to determine if any significant changes happen in the long run related to students’ achievement motivation when remote learning continues.

Man or machine hours needed by various resources to complete construction works are the basis for work estimation and scheduling. In particular, they enable the planner to estimate labor costs or time needed to complete the task, review the resource of workload and availability of resources assigned to particular task, check the possibility of sharing resources across various tasks and determine other rates and factors useful in works scheduling. The project schedule can be analyzed both without or with and in consideration of risk of the end date of the project being pushed out or going over budget on the project. Issues presented above are the subject of this paper. The methods of solving described problems consider the optimization of a loss that derives from partial utilization of assigned the resources.

The physiological and psychological responses to environmental heat stress have been well established. However, in the tropical climate (i.e., hot: 31 ±2 °C and wet climatic environment: 75% ± 10% rH), that concerns millions of people, most studies deals with exercise: Aerobic exercise is negatively affected and the impact of this environment on cognition is unclear. This short communication reviews some studies using cognitive tasks realized in tropical climate or using environmental conditions leading heat stress. In agreement with the literature, it is suggested that, at school, office or university in tropical climates, it is preferable to study in air conditioning or naturally ventilated rooms than in hot and wet climatic conditions in order to reduce feelings of fatigue and thermal discomfort. Further investigations, using cooling or psychological training techniques are needed in order to try to limit the negatives effects of tropical climate on cognition.

The percentage increase in worker productivity with the participative standard and feedback condition was 46%, whereas the increase in the assigned difficult standard with feedback was 23%, compared to the control group (no standard, no feedback). Worker productivity also improved significantly as a result of assigning a normal (100%) production standard with feedback, compared to the control group, and the increase was 12%. The participative standard with feedback condition emerges as the optimum strategy for improving worker productivity in a repetitive industrial production task.
