Opis:
In this study, beneficiation of colemanite minerals from tailings of the Emet Boron Processing Plant using a laboratory scale Jameson flotation cell was investigated in detail. Effect of some working parameters of the Jameson cell such as jet length, plunging depth of downcomer, and bias factor was studied for the flotation performance of colemanite. The results showed that all parameters showed a significant effect on colemanite flotation using the Jameson cell which was the first time used in boron flotation with a negative bias factor. The results also indicated that a high recovery could be obtained with a worthy grade values by the negative bias factor. According to the results obtained at the bias factor of -0.3, jet length of 3 cm, and plunging depth of 20 cm, B2O3 content of the sample increased to approximately 46% from 36.8% with a recovery of 98.47%.

Coal preparation is the process of separating the coal from mineral impurities to produce high-grade coal, and the wastewater of the coal separation process is mainly consisted of fine coal and clay particles. Electrocoagulation (EC) is one of the effective methods for wastewater treatment. In this context, this study was aimed to investigate the evaluation of EC process for coal preparation plant wastewaters. Several key parameters affecting the efficiency of EC were investigated with laboratory scale experiments in search of optimal parameter values. Most importantly, the effect of NaCl concentration on the precipitation of coal preparation plant tailings by EC was investigated. Current density, electrolysis time, mixing speed, mixing time, pH, and salt concentration were studied using an aluminum electrode. Based on the results obtained from this study, the optimum conditions were found to be as pH 7.88 (natural pH), current density 40 (A/m2), mixing speed 360 rpm, premixing time 120 sec, and electrolysis time 300 sec. Under the optimum operating conditions, the results indicated that EC can be successfully applied for the coal preparation wastewaters, and the turbidity was reduced from 1260 NTU to 63 NTU (95% efficiency) with an operating cost of $5.67/Mg of tailings. By the increasing the salt content, a small increase in the turbidity was observed with a decrease in the voltage. With only a 1% decrease in the removal efficiency, the cost was reduced to $3.19/Mg with a 44% operating cost reduction.

The mercury-containing tailing waste from public gold mines in Indonesia is generally deposited on soil without treatment. This research aimed at determining the amount and composition of mercury species in the tailing, and testing the effect of sulfur and sulfide on mercury stabilization. Samples were collected from a tailing pile at different depths in a public gold mine in Kulon Progo, Indonesia. The samples were characterized according to the mercury concentrations and Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test. Mercury speciation was carried out using nitrogen gas flow into tailing samples, which were placed in three test tubes. The released mercuric species was entrapped in KCl and KmnO4 solutions. The mercury stabilization was carried out using sulfur and sodium sulfide. TCLP test was performed to the stabilization products. The mercury concentrations were measured using a mercury analyzer. The results showed that the mercury in the tailings were dominated by elemental Hgo, the concentrations of which in the tailing piles of 30, 60, and 90 cm depths were 74.7%, 71.6%, and 76.5% respectively. Those of ionic Hg2+ form were 25.3%, 28.4%, and 23.5%, respectively. Additions of sulfur powder and sodium sulfide solution produced stable black-colored mercury sulfide. When compared to sulfide, sulfur was more recommended for stabilizing mercury in the tailing waste.

In this study, the concentration of chromite minerals by amine flotation of a chromite tailing (slime) with content 23.84% Cr2O3 from Yeşilova-Burdur (Turkey) was investigated. In experimental studies, firstly, some operating parameters of the rougher flotation observed for a low-grade chromite tailing were investigated. Secondly, multiple linear regression (MLR) analyses were performed to determine the effects of some operating parameters on the performance of the rougher amine flotation. From the experimental results, multiple linear regression equations were developed to predict the recovery and grade of the chromite concentrate, and the regression coefficients between experimental and predicted values were found to be quite good (R2 values of 0.772 and 0.917, respectively). Additionally, it was found that the conditioning time and low pH value using $H_2SO_4$ showed an important effect on the recovery and the grade of the chromite concentrate.

In certain small-gold mining activities in West Lombok, Indonesia, the tailings containing mercury are discharged to agricultural lands, reducing their productivity. One of the efforts to restore the land is by bioremediation of mercury, using mercury-resistant microbes. This study was aimed to isolate the mercury-resistant bacteria from small-scale gold mine tailings containing mercury, and to test their capability in accumulating mercury. Bacterial isolation and identification were conducted from nutrient broth supplemented with 5 ppm HgCl2. The isolated bacteria were tested for mercury accumulation in the nutrient broth containing 10, 20 and 30 ppm Hg for 24 hours, and in small-scale gold mine tailing containing 41.37 ppm Hg for 2 weeks. The results showed that there were four pure isolates of mercury-resistant bacteria which were identified as Brevundimonas vesicularis, Nitrococcus mobilis, Fusobacterium aquatile and Fusobacterium necrogenes. The highest Hg accumulation from nutrient broth liquid media containing 10, 20 and 30 ppm Hg was observed for Brevundimonas vesicularis. The mercury accumulation efficiency of the four bacteria applied to small-scale gold mine tailing containing mercury was in the order of Fusobacterium aquatile (76.1%) > Brevundimonas vesicularis (75.6%) > Fusobacterium necrogenes (74.4%) > Nitrococcus mobilis (74.2%). On the basis of the Hg accumulation efficiency of more than 75%, Fusobacterium aquatile and Brevundimonas vesicularis are prospective for bioremediation of mercury-contaminated soils.

The paper presents the issue of tailing supply utilization in dam construction, covers general overview of these wastes produced in Ostrava - Silesian Region as well as experimental results and practical experience with the realization of dam construction in the undermined areas. In Ostrava - Silesian Region mining waste mainly contain the anthracite mining wastes, i.e. tailings - produced in a quantity of cca 9.8 million tons per year. Besides, considerable amount of other industrial wastes (slag, loose ashes, scoria) is produced there as well. These wastes are concentrated in a relatively small area of the region. From the facts listed above we can deduce that the present state of ecology is abject there. Provided that the major part of these wastes would be put back into the mined-out areas or utilized as building material, there is a certain possibility to protect the environment. Utilization of formerly mentioned wastes (slag, loose ashes, scoria) in road engineering is described in the references.
Opracowanie przedstawia zagadnienie wykorzystania odpadów poflotacyjnych do konstrukcji stawów osadowych, zawiera ogólny przegląd tego rodzaju odpadów produkowanych w rejonie Ostrawy oraz prezentuje wyniki i doświadczenia praktyczne zdobyte podczas eksperymentalnej konstrukcji stawu osadowego zlokalizowanego na obszarze poeksploatacyjnym.

In this study, direct froth flotation experiments were conducted on silicate-rich phosphate tailing samples. The average grade of P2O5 in the flotation feed was 21.6% as determined using a combination of spectroscopic techniques including X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), mineral liberation analysis (MLA), and scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). Two polymers were selected to promote the depression of silicates and enhance the flotation of phosphates: in-house synthesized hybrid polyacrylamide (Hy-PAM) and chitosan. Flotation efficiency of phosphates was evaluated at different flotation conditions including depressant type, depressant dosage, pH, and the flotation time. Results indicated that the optimum flotation efficiency of phosphate minerals (84.6% recovery at 28.6% grade of P2O5) was obtained when Hy-PAM was utilized at the studied range of pH and flotation time. All datasets produced from the flotation experiments were integrated within the framework of machine learning (ML) using artificial neural networks (ANNs). The ANN platform was trained, validated, and successfully employed to predict the process outcomes in relation to the pulp and reagents characteristics, which in turn were used to determine the optimum values of process variables. Coefficient of determination (R2), mean absolute error (MAE), and root-mean-square error (RMSE) were used as model indicators. Optimization results showed that the peak flotation performance could be achieved at higher dosages of both polymers. However, lower pH and shorter flotation time for Hy-PAM, and higher pH and longer flotation time for chitosan, were predicted to give the optimum process efficiency.

This study aimed to find optimal models in a comparative framework to estimate the recovery and grade of barite concentrate obtained from the rougher flotation of the barite tailings. Therefore, firstly, the effect of four operating parameters (flotation time, pH, collector dosage, and depressant dosage) on the rougher flotation of the barite tailings containing 37.23% BaSO4 was experimentally investigated. Secondly, two models called the multivariable linear regression (MLR) and the artificial neural network (ANN) were used for the estimation of the recovery and grade of the barite concentrate for the rougher flotation optimization. The R2 values found from the MLR and ANN models were 0.828 and 0.995 for the concentrate recovery, and 0.977 and 0.960 for the barite concentrate grade, respectively. In the comparison of the models determined, it was found that the ANN model expressed quite well than the MLR models, especially for the recovery of the rougher concentrate.

Indonesia comprises a high diversity of plant species, some of which may have a potential role as metal phytoaccumulators including gold (Au), known as phytomining agents. Some local plants grown at the metal-contaminated sites can become potential phytoaccumulators due to their adaptation capability to the metal-polluted conditions. Phytomining is one of the eco-friendly methods usually used to extract lowgrade metal bio-ore from the environment and this method can be applied on gold tailing waste. This study aimed to find the hyperaccumulator plants selected from a gold mine area, which can be applied for a gold (Au) phytomining agent. The study was located in Aneka Tambang Inc. (PT. ANTAM-UBPE Pongkor), Bogor, West Java, Indonesia. A vegetation analysis was carried out using a transect experiment on the area around gold mine tailings dam, and the samples were collected for further analysis. Tailings were sampled for metal analysis, while the plant samples including the below-ground and above-ground part of biomass were separated, washed, and weighed for the biomass and metal analyses. The total concentration of gold in the plants and tailings was measured by using a graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometer (GF-AAS). There were 17 plant species identified as gold accumulators collected from the gold mine tailing area, which were potential phytomining agents. The gold measurement showed that all plants species had the ability to absorb gold residues from the tailings dam, indicating that all the plants have a potential role as gold phytoaccumulators. Among the species, Typha angustifolia had the highest importance value index (IVI) followed by Cyperus haspan. The results showed that T. angustifolia and C. haspan were among the plants with the highest potential as Au phytoaccumulators to support the gold phytomining program for the gold mine tailing area.

The article presents the results of field and laboratory studies on the state of surface waters in the impact zone of one of the largest mining enterprises of the Russian Federation, i.e. Kovdor Mining and Processing Combine. On the basis of the data from the monitoring studies, the patterns of migration and transformation of manganese in the system of wastes of enrichment – surface water – are revealed. In order to solve the existing environmental problem, an effective method of treating sewage from manganese using organic sorbent based on vermiculite is proposed. The results of laboratory tests of the sorbent are described depending on the method of its modification, as well as on the composition and properties of the purified water. The proposed method of sewage treatment will reduce the negative impact of the company on surface water, thereby improving the ecological situation in the study area and improving the quality of life of the local population.

In this study, iron selectivity behaviour of copper smelter slag (CSS) flotation tailings (38.08% Fe, 0.35% Cu, 4.48% Zn, 0.16% Co, 0.37% S) having fayalite and magnetite as major minerals was investigated with hematitization baking and base metals leaching methods using mineralogical and chemical analyses. For selectivity of iron, it was baked at temperatures of 650-690-700-710-730°C. The aim of the baking is to transform the almost all of the iron in the fayalite into the oxidized (non-soluble) form and the base metals into the sulphated (soluble) form. The temperature that had the lowest hematitization rate of iron was found to be 650°C, and the highest temperature was found to be 730°C. To examine the dissolution behaviour of baked CSS flotation tailing was leached at 50°C at a 1/10 (w/v) for 1 hour by using water. After baking at 690°C calcine and leaching residue, S values were determinated to be approximately 17% and 9%, respectively. Baking made at 700⁰C, amount of sulfate also decreased to 10% and S content was measured as 4% of its leaching residue. As a result of this study, 690⁰C/700⁰C was determined as optimum conditions of hematitization baking and base metals were extracted selectively when the iron was remained at leaching residue in Fe2O3 phase. It was determined that, hematitization is high and the sulphates of the base metals are preserved at 700⁰C temperature. The fayalite phase completely decomposed into Si-O/Fe-O/Zn-S-O/Co-S-O compounds at 700⁰C baking which was the highest iron selective and base metals dissolute temperature.

Iron ore tailing is a kind of hazardous solid waste produced by iron and steel industry. In order to separate and recycle iron from the magnetic preconcentrate of an iron ore tailing, an innovative technological route of fluidized magnetization roasting followed by low-intensity magnetic separation was proposed in this paper. The effects of roasting temperature, dosages of reducing gas CO and fluidizing gas N2 on recovery rate of iron were carried out and optimized. The results showed that the hematite was almost reduced to magnetite by a gas mixture of 4 m3/h CO and 1 m3/h N2 at roasting temperature of 540 °C. Under the optimized conditions, a magnetic concentrate assaying 61.4 wt% Fe with a recovery rate of 81.8% was obtained from the magnetic preconcentrate of an iron ore tailing. The iron chemical phase, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and optical metallographic microscope analyses revealed that siderite was converted to magnetite successfully after roasting, and some coarse magnetite-hematite interlocking particles were formed due to insufficient reaction time, which could also be recovered by magnetic separation after liberating from gangue minerals.

The effectiveness of reclamation activities in a tailing pond has been evaluated by the application of mineral and organic substances and remediation plants with water absorbing geocomposites. The research was conducted on the tailing pond of the former copper mine in Iwiny, Poland, basing on a strict, trifactorial experiment set up with the use of the split-split-plot method with 4 replications. The main experimental factors were the variants of substrate modification, various species (or mixtures) of reclamation plants and the presence of water absorbing geocomposites. The conducted experiments did not demonstrate a significant influence of various types of tailing additives. The usability of individual species of reclamation grass or their mixtures for the reclamation was similar. Water absorbing geocomposites contributed to the improvement of difficult vegetation conditions that occur in tailing ponds.

Water bodies are the final sinks of all pollution with more than 90% of contaminants found in suspended particulates and bottom sediments. Only less than 10% is retained in the water column yet it attracts and receives great research attention. The pollution status and the potential ecological risk of three pools of water along a stream due to heavy metal enrichment from a nearby active gold mining tailings dam were assessed. The upstreamdownstream and sedimentological approaches to ecosystem health assessment were used. Potential uses of pool water were also evaluated based on measured water quality parameters. Heavy metals in water and sediment were determined using Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry. Results revealed that salinisation, acidification and heavy metals were exported from a mining tailings dam to the stream. The degree of contamination of pool water by heavy metals dictated water uses. Heavy metal concentrations imposed water use restrictions for aquatic life in a pool which directly received discharge from the mine tailings dam. The average heavy metal concentrations in sediments were lower than the standard shale values. Sediment quality guidelines and pollution indices showed that the stream was not polluted with heavy metals, thus posed no potential ecological risk. Continuous monitoring of tailings discharge and wash off is important to safeguard aquatic ecosystem and public health.
