- Historical Italian dances in context of harpsichord literature. The article „Historical Italian dances in context of harpsichord literature” presents the brief history of the three most popular historical Italian dances – corrente (courant), pavane and galiarde, their basic moves, the most interesting, significant facts and information on where to find them in harpsichord literature. The article begins with an introduction to courtly etiquette so as to show how important dances were for aristocratic lifestyle between the 16th and 18th centuries. It also presents an overview of the most important historical dance treatises over the centuries. Corrente was a fast, three-measured dance of Italian origin. Its first version was probably saltarello. Throughout the years it evolved into courante – the favourite dance of King Louis XIV. Corrente was a very popular dance in suites for harpsichord, but it must not be mistaken with French courante. The most famous correnti may be found in Bach’s suites and partitas. The composer was precise with the description of this dance and distinguished corrente from courante. Pavane and galiarde are the two following dances. Pavane was a slower, two-measured dance of pagan origin and galiarde was a fast, jumpy dance, popular in the folk culture. This pair of dances was favoured in the Elisabethian England and the most of English Virginalists composed instrumental pieces based on these dances.
