Polish emigrants would arrive in Denmark from 1893 onwards mostly from Little Poland Cieszyn Silesia. In the total number of 25.000 Catholics in Denmark there were 13.000 Poles. In 1927, 14 nationally foreign priests provided pastoral care who spoke Polish. Polish pastoral care provided by the priests under the jurisdiction of the Polish Primate met with an extraordinary chauvinistic resistance on the part of the missionaries mostly from the Netherlands and Germany. Opposing this process that tended to make Polish emigration lose its identity, the Alliance of Polish Workers in Denmark had taken the role of the Only defender of Poles national and Catholic identity in this country. In its letter to Primate A. Hlond the Alliance asked for rescue. This document shows the scale of the problem, hopelessness of the state and church authorities in Poland, limitations that are attendant on the role of a petitioner. The Poles’ grassroots initiative remained „a silent scream” against the nationally alien priests.

Along with Poland regained its independence in 1918. One of the main tasks were to run education efforts. This process proceeded in extremely difficult conditions, which the country inherited from years of partitions. It was therefore necessary to build the entire educational system from scratch. Vilnius has proved to be particularly difficult region to achieve those goals, as Polish state ranged find a more complicated than it has taken place at other sites. It also has an impact on the organization of education, both in terms of general (primary), vocational and secondary. An additional difficulty created an almost total lack of quality teachers, school premises and extremely diverse social composition of the population of the region, where he lived in a number of national minorities. This required the introduction of a more flexible school system, based on the terms adapted to the existing situation. Associated with the other staffing needs and other content of the curriculum for the entire school education. In practice, most of these problems were solved only after the introduction of the new law on “school system” provided for parliament passed in 1932. The specificity of education in the Vilnius region and eastern territories were not only problems of minority and attempt an appropriate solution, but also an ambitious program of civic and patriotic education of youth. This idea is implemented at all levels of school education as part of the mandatory teaching and enjoying great popularity - extracurricular activities, after-school and youth organizations. This activity flourished until 1939. Later, when Vilnius was under foreign occupation was liquidated Polish education that could operate on the basis of secret.

The article was prepared in connection with the 90th anniversary of Polish education in Warmia and Masuria. It shows the collections of the Museum of Warmia and Masuria in Olsztyn, related to the professional and social activity of Bronisław Chabowski (1892–1942), who in 1929–1934 worked in Polish schools in Warmia. Descriptions of documents and photographs are a pretext to present applicable legal provisions, which in the interwar period regulated the functioning of education in the Polish state as well as the education of the German minority, enabling these to be presented in a broader historical context. At the same time, they enable the fate, professional career, educational and cultural and social activities of Polish teachers to be reconstructed through the prism of individual life events. The analysis of B. Chabowski’s team also gives a picture of the typical personality of a Polish teacher who decided to work in schools founded in Warmia from 1929. In the vast majority of cases they were people with pedagogical and organisational skills, who had artistic and social passion.
