Opis:
Background: Pet therapy could help individuals improve their emotions; and physical and mental health. It also could be effective in the treatment of pain, anxiety, depression, and fatigue. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of pet therapy, concurrent with common medication on positive, negative, cognitive and motor symptoms of schizophrenia. Methods: This was a randomized control trial. Statistical population of the current study included all patients who were admitted to the Razi Psychiatric Center of Tehran and received a diagnosis of schizophrenia based on a clinical interview and DSM criteria by a psychiatrist. Thirty six patients were recruited using snowball sampling. Members of the experimental group were transported by a bus to that spot at 9 a.m on the planned days, in the company of the researcher and a nurse. Patients gave care of the rabbits (including feeding, tidying their cages, moving their cages) for 24 sessions of 90 minutes, three days per week during autumn 2016. The One-way covariance test was also used to evaluate effects of Pet therapy on positive, negative, cognitive and motor symptoms of schizophrenia. Results: finding indicated that considering scores of pre-test for positive, negative and cognitive symptoms, there is a significant difference between the two controls and experimental groups, respectively, (F = 17.04, p < 0.05), (F = 17.39, p < 0.05), (F = 152.12, p < 0.05). Conclusion: Pet therapy could be successfully applied by parents, psychologists and care givers of these patients. We suggest using pet therapy for treatment of other psychiatric disorders as well and preferably like dogs and cats.

This study aimed to evaluate possible health effects associated with long-term occupational exposure to low levels of mercury vapors. Forty-six subjects exposed to mercury and 65 healthy unexposed employees were studied. The subjects were administered a questionnaire on experienced symptoms and underwent clinical examinations as well as routine biochemical tests. Atmospheric and urinary concentrations of mercury were measured, too. Environmental concentrations of mercury were estimated to be 3.97 ± 6.28 μg/m3 and urinary concentrations of mercury in exposed and referent groups were 34.30 ± 26.77 and 10.15 ± 3.82 μg/dm3, respectively. Additionally, symptoms such as somatic fatigue, anorexia, loss of memory, erethism, blurred vision and teeth problems were significantly more common among exposed individuals. These observations indicate that occupational exposure to mercury vapors, even at low levels, is likely to be associated with neurological and psychological symptoms.

ObjectivesComputer workstations are considered a potential workplace hazard. This study sought to evaluate computer workstation ergonomics in a university office environment, and to determine its relationship with musculoskeletal (MS) and visual symptoms reported by employees.Material and MethodsThis was a cross-sectional observational study. A total of 231 university employees were recruited using a stratified random sampling technique. By means of direct observation, computer workstations were evaluated using the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Ergonomic Computer Workstation Evaluation Checklist. In addition, the participants reported MS and visual symptoms during the past week and 12 months by completing questionnaires.ResultsSeveral ergonomic deficiencies in computer workstations were identified. Seating, working area, and keyboard and input devices had the most documented deficits. A significant proportion of employees reported various MS symptoms during the past 12 months. The most affected body parts were the shoulders (37%), the lower back (34%), and the neck (29%). The most prevalent visual symptom was tired eyes (68%). Logistic regression analysis indicated that MS symptoms, such as ache, pain and discomfort, were significantly associated with the total scores on the OSHA components. Deficits in monitor ergonomics and its placement, particularly the presence of glare reflected on the screen, were also associated with reported visual symptoms. Independent variables, such as gender, age, employment duration, job type, daily computer work hours, and work pattern, reliably predicted the participants’ reported experience of various MS and visual symptoms.ConclusionsBoth MS and visual symptoms are associated with deficits in computer workstation ergonomics. Appropriate strategies, work practices, and preventive measures are needed to eliminate occupational hazards associated with computer workstations.

The word autism increasingly appears on the lips of most pedagogues, teachers and parents. Why? This disorder is more and more common today in our environment: at school, in the family. The causes of this disease are not well known yet, but there are more and more methods and ways or means of treatment that allow the child with autism to "function as normal" in the society. It is very important to diagnose and start treatment as soon as it is possible. The following article introduces the theoretical aspects of this disorder, such as the concept or symptoms, which have been thoroughly discussed and summarized in a table form.In this article have been described only some of the possible ways to work with autistic children, such as behavioral therapy, Option Method, Activity Plans, sensory integration method. Each of these methods largely supports the development of a child with autism. The article ends with a summary and the conclusion of the theoretical study.

Acute appendicitis (AA) still remains the most common acute surgical abdominal emergency. Although 90% of cases occur in children and young adults, the incidence in the elderly amounts up to 10% and is constantly rising. The aim of the study was to assess the differences between clinical presentation in the elderly patients with AA compared to the younger patients. Additional aim was to assess the correlation between in-hospital time delays and patients’ outcomes. Material and methods. We conducted a retrospective analysis of medical data of 274 patients admitted to 3rd Department of General Surgery in Cracow between January 2011 and December 2013 due to AA. The elderly group comprised 23 patients aged 65 and above and the non-elderly group consisted of 251 patients. Results. The groups did not differ in symptoms and their duration, type of surgery and its duration. However, time from admission to ED to the beginning of the procedure was significantly lower in the elderly group (575.56 vs 858.9 min; p=0.03). The elderly had longer hospital stay (6.08 vs 4.69 days; p=0.004). In the elderly group the perforation rate was close to reaching statistical significance (26.1% vs 12.4%; p=0.06). No mortality was noted in both groups and morbidity was slightly higher in elderly group (17.4% vs 10%; p=0.26). Conclusions. There was no difference in the clinical presentation between elderly and non-elderly patients group. However, elderly patients presented with a more progressed inflammation of the appendix. The hospital stay was longer in the elderly group, without any mortality and with higher rate of morbidity in this group. The length of the preoperative phase was significantly shorter, confirming the awareness of importance of time in the elderly patients with acute abdomen.

Appropriate treatment of symptomatic carotid artery stenosis can reduce ischemic cerebral strokes' risk and in some cases eliminate neurological symptoms. Endarterectomy is the most common surgical treatment. The aim of the study was to examine the influence of carotid endarterectomy on neurological symptoms and patients' life quality.Material and methods. The material comprised of 102 patients who underwent endarterectomy. All of the patients were given a questionnaire with a list of neurological symptoms (vertigos, headaches, left hemiparesis, right hemiparesis, numbness, acroparaesthesia, single syncope, recurrent syncopies, diplopia, tinnitus, concentration disturbances and aphasia) and with a numerical life quality scale to fill in before and a year after the surgery.Results. Vertigo, headache, single and recurrent syncopies and aphasia as well as cerebral stroke and amaurosis fugax were significantly more rarely observed after endarterectomy. The mean value of patients' life quality evaluated on a 10-point Likert scale after the surgery increased (3.9 vs 6.3).Conclusions. A year after carotid endarterectomy patients' life quality improves which is connected with neurological symptoms' regression and no further symptoms' occurrence due to a preventive role of the surgery.

The aim of the current study was to determine the relationship between the intensity of symptoms of attention deficit, impulsiveness/hyperactivity, and oppositional or rebellious behaviours among school-age children and the practices undertaken by their parents. The participants were 103 mothers and 69 fathers. They were the parents of 108 children aged between 8–11 years old. In the study the questionnaires were used, among others the Polish version of The Alabama Parenting Questionnaire. The results point to a relationship between the intensity of oppositional or rebellious behaviours and more frequent negative practices implemented by mothers and also less frequent positive parental activities. Among the fathers’ group no such strong trends occurred, although fathers were more likely to use an incoherent discipline and a corporal punishment when the intensity of oppositional or rebellious behaviours of their children increased. Also, a relationship between an incoherent discipline and a weak control performed by mothers, with a higher intensity of attention deficit and impulsiveness/hyperactivity among their children emerged. No such relationship emerged among fathers. In accordance with the previous research, the current results suggest a stronger relationship between the actions taken by parents with the intensity of the oppositional or rebellious behaviours than with the intensity of attention deficit and impulsiveness/hyperactivity symptoms of children.

The aim of this paper was to present how mental symptoms are connected to the use of desktop, portable or minicomputers (communicators and hand-held computers), mobile phones, and background information such as age and gender in the Finnish working-age population. The study was carried out as a cross-sectional study by posting a questionnaire to 15 000 working-age (18–65) Finns. The mental symptoms of 6 121 respondents were analysed using the model factors age, gender, the use of computers and the use of mobile phones. In all data, the use of desktop computers was related to mental symptoms. However, the results of our data are not highly reliable, because the nonresponse rate was over 50%. Nevertheless, it may be essential to take into account in the future that working with computers can increase workers’ mental symptoms, and it is important to observe their mental health.

The objective of the study was analysis of the occurrence and intensity of menopausal symptoms in postmenopausal women from Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland. The study was conducted during the period 2014–2015 among postmenopausal women living in the areas of Poland, Belarus, Ukraine, Czech Republic and Slovakia. The degree of menopausal complaints was assessed using the Kupperman Menopausal Index and Greene Climacteric Scale. The respondents were additionally asked about age, educational level, place of residence, marital status and age at last menstrual period. Into the study were enrolled women aged 50–65, minimum 2 years after the last menstrual period, who had a generally good state of health and did not use hormone replacement therapy. The results were subjected to statistical analysis. The intensity of all menopausal symptoms measured by the Kupperman Menopausal Index and Greene Climacteric Scale was similar in Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia. In these countries, severe, moderate and mild menopausal symptoms measured by Kupperman Menopausal Index occurred with a similar frequency. Similar results were also obtained in the subscales of psychological, somatic and vasomotor symptoms according to the Greene Climacteric Scale. Nearly a half of the women from Belarus did not report symptoms measured by Kupperman Menopausal Index. They obtained significantly lower menopausal complaints in the subscales of psychological and somatic symptoms according to the Greene Climacteric Scale, compared to the inhabitants of the remaining countries. The majority of women from the Ukraine had mild menopausal symptoms as measured by the Kupperman Menopausal Index. They had significantly more severe complaints in the subscales of psychological, somatic and vasomotor symptoms according to the Greene Climacteric Scale, compared to the inhabitants of the remaining countries in the study. The intensity of menopausal symptoms in women from Ukraine and Belarus was related with educational level, place of residence, and marital status, whereas in women from Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia, only with marital status.

Opis:
Introduction: Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers occurring in Poland. Unfortunately, this cancer is most often diagnosed at the time of great advancement. This is caused by the appearance of specific symptoms only in the late stages of cancer. Also, such low detection of early stages of adenocarcinoma may be caused by disregarding of slight symptoms. Purpose: To analyse symptoms in patients with colorectal cancer and correlate with chosen clinical-pathological parameters. Materials and methods: The study group consisted of 46 patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Information on symptoms associated with cancer (subjective and objective) have been selected from patients' medical history. The presence of these symptoms was correlated with the age and sex of patients, tumor location, histological type of cancer, grade of histological malignancy (G), stage of tumor (T stage), presence of lymph node metastases and distant metastases. Results: It has been shown that the presence of pain complaints described by the patient are associated with the occurrence of cancer in the colon. The painfulness and pathological resistance diagnosed by the physician are more often associated with cancer located in the colon. In the case of tumors located in the rectum, faecal admixtures appear more frequently. It has also been shown that the presence of admixtures of blood and mucus in the stool is associated with more advanced local tumors, infiltrating pericolorectal tissues (T3 + T4). Conclusions: Familiarity with clinical symptoms of colorectal cancer could make patients more sensitive to more often screening for cancer. Analysis of these symptoms could indicate to the physician the location or stage of the cancer.

Objectives: Evaluation of the correlation between efficiency of working memory and positive and negative symptoms in patients with the first episode of schizophrenia, those who have not been treated so far and those after six weeks’ treatment with antipsychotics. Methods: The study covered 32 patients (20 men and 12 women) aged 18-46 years (22 years on average) with diagnosed first episode of schizophrenia (ICD-10), admitted to hospital, not treated so far. Prior to treatment and after six weeks of antipsychotic treatment (14 – TN and 18 – NAP in typical doses) clinical state (PANSS) and working memory were evaluated (WCST, TMT B, Digit Span backward from Wechsler Intelligence Scale WAIS-R – PL). Conclusions: 1) In previously untreated patients, during severe symptoms of schizophrenia the working memory dysfunction was mostly correlated with the presence of negative symptoms, to a less extent – with the presence of general symptoms. 2) After six weeks of antipsychotic treatment of patients with the first episode of schizophrenia an advantageous change in the working memory functioning and significant change of mental state were observed, expressed by abatement – to a significant extent – of both positive and negative symptoms. 3) The advantageous change in the working memory functioning after six weeks’ treatment of patients with the first episode of schizophrenia was associated with abatement of all groups of pathological symptoms, but it mostly correlated with an improvement within negative symptoms. 4) Finding a strong correlation between the working memory disorders and the presence and severity of negative symptoms before and after pharmacotherapy, whatever its type (TN or NAP), perhaps indicates a similar aetiology of these symptoms (common neuroanatomic basis) and existence of a special subtype of schizophrenia.
Cele: Ocena związku między sprawnością pamięci operacyjnej a objawami pozytywnymi i negatywnymi u pacjentów z pierwszym epizodem schizofrenii, dotychczas nieleczonych oraz po sześciu tygodniach kuracji lekami przeciwpsychotycznymi. Metody: Do badania włączono 32 chorych (20 mężczyzn i 12 kobiet) w wieku 18-46 lat (średnio 22 lata), z rozpoznaniem pierwszego epizodu schizofrenii (ICD-10), przyjętych do szpitala, dotychczas nieleczonych.

Travel to developing countries is associated with possibility to acquire different, also parasitic, diseases which have become a diagnostic and therapeutic problem. The ENT specialist is one of the medical officers who may make initial contact with a patient with a suspected parasitic disease. One of them is leishmaniosis: a parasitic disease classified as Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD), which occurs in the tropics, subtropics and southern Europe. While asymptomatic invasion is observed in some cases, three forms of symptomatic leishmaniosis can be distinguished: cutaneous leishmaniosis (CL), visceral leishmaniosis (VL), and mucosal leishmaniosis (ML). Signs and symptoms of these forms, as well as the differential diagnosis, diagnostic procedures and treatment are presented in the paper.

Opis:
Preliminary study of the total dust exposure in the textile industry of Semarang city is 233 μg/Nm3, which exceeds the quality standard. The high concentration of dust is influenced by increased productivity, so that it has the potential as a source of pollutants that can affect the respiratory system of workers. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between dust exposure and respiratory disorders symptoms in workers. The method used is a cross-sectional study with a sample size of 161 people and 6 points of dust measurement locations. The Modified Medical Research Council (MMRC) standardized questionnaire was used to collect data. The data were analyzed using the SPSS 24 with Chi square and Binary logistic regression tests to determine the relationship. The results showed that the average dust concentration exceeded the quality standard, namely 4 location points for PM2.5, 1 location point for PM10, and 2 location points for total dust. The average exposure to respirable dust is 3.93 μg/m3, which exceeds the quality standard. A total of 57% of workers experienced symptoms of respiratory disorders with the results of bivariate statistical analysis of 5 significant variables, namely PM2.5 (p = 0.021), PM10 (p = 0.002), total dust (p = 0.000), respirable dust (p = 0.002), and working period (p = 0.037). Meanwhile, the results of the binary logistic regression test had 2 significant variables, namely total dust (p = 0.000) and respirable dust (p = 0.006). The conclusion of this study is that total dust and respirable dust that exceed the quality standard have a higher risk of causing respiratory disorders symptoms with a probability of 71.6% and dust may be minimized by adding a pneumablo to each machine.

Objectives Many facts indicate the important role of psychosomatic symptoms that occur due to traumatic events. This study is an analysis of the coexistence of psychosomatic symptoms and traumatic events. Though not every person taking part in these events develops a fully symptomatic post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), psychosomatic symptoms with a strong psychological component are observed in many. This study focuses on a comparison of the intensity of somatization, anxiety, depression, and distress of medical university students, who encountered a traumatic event and those who have not experienced trauma. Material and Methods The data was collected from 594 students of different academic majors at the Poznan University of Medical Sciences, Poland. The participants were asked if they had experienced situations that caused psychological trauma as well as about the intensity of their psychosomatic symptoms. The data was collected with 2 questionnaires: Post-traumatic Stress Diagnostic Scale and Four-Dimensional Symptom Questionnaire. Results The study reveals that 78% of students experienced a traumatic event, in 15% moderate and severe symptoms of PTSD are observed, 45% presents average and high stress levels, 23% experiences symptoms of depression, whereas 30% has anxiety and 26% somatic symptoms. Conclusions Studies show that experiencing traumatic events in life is linked to the higher intensity of an/the entire range of psychosomatic symptoms.

The aim of our work was to study the physical symptoms of upper- and lower-level white-collar workers using a questionnaire. The study was cross-sectional with a questionnaire posted to 15 000 working-age persons. The responses (6121) included 970 upper- and 1150 lower-level white-collar workers. In the upper - and lower-level white-collar worker groups, 45.7 and 56.0%, respectively, had experienced pain, numbness and aches in the neck either pretty often or more frequently. When comparing daily computer users and nonusers, there were significant differences in pain, numbness and aches in the neck or in the shoulders. In addition, age and gender influenced some physical symptoms. In the future, it is essential to take into account that working with computers can be especially associated with physical symptoms in the neck and in the shoulders when workers use computers daily.

This paper presents the use of new technical equipment by young adults (30 years old or younger), and the physical symptoms they have. The paper then analyses how the symptoms are associated with the use of computers and mobile phones, taking into account the background information. The study is based on a survey of 15 000 working-age (18–65) Finns. The responses (1563) covering young adults’ physical symptoms were analysed. Altogether 53.3% of all young adults had pretty often or more frequently pain, numbness or aches in the neck and 32.2% had aches in the hip and lower back. Women experienced more pain, numbness or aches in the neck (65.0%) than men (34.5%). The use of different computers at leisure quite often had an association with some symptoms in different parts of the body. In addition, exhaustion at work had associations with some physical symptoms. In the future, it is essential to note ergonomic reasons and exhaustion at work when young adults experience pain, numbness or aches.

Background: The changes that occur in a woman’s body during the perimenopausal period may influence feelings of attractiveness and perception of status in an intimate relationship, which may play a role in overall sexual satisfaction. Aim of the study: The present study aimed to analyze the influence of selected perimenopausal symptoms on the perception of satisfaction with sexual life in urban and rural women. Material and methods: This study included 224 women from urban areas and 106 women from rural areas who were using general practice services. Inclusion criteria were women who had not menstruated for 2–5 years. The measures used were the Menopause Rating Scale (MRS) and the Sexual Quality of Life-Female questionnaire (SQoL-F). Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used to assess the relationship between the severity of perimenopausal symptoms and satisfaction with sexual life. Results: A greater proportion of urban women reported symptoms in the perimenopausal period than rural women. Statistically significant correlations were observed for irritability (P = 0.03) and sexual problems (P = 0.01). However, rural women reported a greater degree of symptom severity. There was a statistically significant difference in severity of somatic and psychological symptoms between urban and rural women. In urban women, the average score for general satisfaction with their sexual life was 62 ± 19.96, whereas the average score for rural women was slightly less, 59 ± 23.56. A statistically significant inverse relationship was observed between the severity of perimenopausal symptoms and quality of sexual life, with values of Spearman’s rank correlation coefficients ranging from −0.490 to −0.064. Conclusions: Urban or rural residence had a slight influence on the frequency and severity of perimenopausal symptoms, and severity of symptoms had a significant influence on women’s satisfaction with their sexual life.

In the paper, an efficient way of several sensors fusion for grinding wheel wear and some process outputs model building during the external cylindrical grinding is presented and the performance of the system is experimentally evaluated. The sensors of grinding force components, chatter vibration, and acoustic emission are used. First, the training and testing sets of data has been established. A level of the grinding wheel wear has been assigned to every data sample using especially designed sensors for tactile measurements of the wheel topography features. The principle of this measuring system is based on the technology of surface roughness measurement. The process state has been verified by measurements of the workpiece roughness and shape error. The laboratory research presented in the paper focuses mainly on a search for the best configuration signal processing methods. Different feature selection methods have been used to establish an optimal set of informative features as process state symptoms. The selected features can be used for the process state model building. The research results allow to find out general recommendations for building of the automated supervisory systems for plunge grinding processes.

Opis:
Menopause Symptom List was developed in Australia as a tool to depict severity and intensity of symptoms related to menopause. Three scales of the questionnaire – psychological, vasomotor and somatic symptoms – were extracted by factor analysis. The paper gives account of the Polish version of the questionnaire (Moje samopoczucie), its validity and reliability. Factor analysis has confirmed the original 3 factors structure of the questionnaire. Realiability coefficients (test-retest, Cronbach’s and Spearmann-Brown’s coefficient) were sufficiently high. Validity was estimated by comparing the results of the questionnaire and a physician’s evaluation of intensity and severity of menopausal symptoms. Most subjects with high questionnaire scores were also given high scores on medical record. Results of women with different menopausal status were significantly different. The scores changed significantly in women treated with hormone replacement therapy. All these results indicate that Polish version of Menopause Symptom List is a valid tool to be used in studies on menopausal transition.

Opis:
INTRODUCTION: COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019), a disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) infection, may have a more or less severe course. The aim of this study was to analyse the symptoms which occurred in a group of people who tested positively for the presence of the genetic material of the virus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The analysis was based on the results of 337 questionnaires collected from Polish patients – 185 (55%) females and 152 (45%) males aged 18–86. The questionnaire included 26 questions, of which 11 were related to systemic symptoms. The frequency of their occurrence and their severity were determined according to Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). RESULTS: The most common symptoms that occurred in over 50% of the respondents included: general weakness (91% of the respondents, severity of 6.25 on VAS), musculoskeletal pain (77%, VAS 5.67), headache (65%, VAS 5.37) and cough (56%, VAS 4.76). Runny nose, fever above 38℃ and sore throat were less common and occurred in 39% of the subjects. The least frequent symptoms were diarrhoea (23%), skin lesions (7%) and vomiting (3%). When determining the correlation coefficient, it was also found that dyspnoea occurred most often with general weakness (r = 1), whereas general weakness was less frequently associated with musculoskeletal pain (r = 0.8). No statistically significant relationships were found between the frequency of the symptoms and age, gender or the presence of comorbidities in the respondents. CONCLUSIONS: The observations showed that in the analysed group of people with SARS-CoV-2 infection, the disease had a mild-to-moderate course. General weakness, musculoskeletal pain, cough, and upper respiratory tract infection symptoms were the most common.
WYNIKI: Do najczęstszych objawów, występujących u ponad 50% ankietowanych, należą: ogólne osłabienie (91% ankietowanych, nasilenie 6,25 w skali VAS), bóle układu mięśniowo-szkieletowego (77%, VAS 5,67), bóle głowy (65%, VAS 5,37) oraz kaszel (56%, VAS 4,76).

Opis:
Objectives Gold miners use mercury to extract gold from ore adding liquid mercury to the milled gold-containing ore. This results in a mercury-gold compound, called amalgam. Miners smelt this amalgam to obtain gold, vaporizing it and finally inhaling the toxic mercury fumes. The objective was to merge and analyze data from different projects, to identify typical signs and symptoms of chronic inorganic mercury exposure. Material and Methods Miners and community members from various artisanal small-scale gold mining areas had been examined (Philippines, Mongolia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Indonesia). Data of several health assessments were pooled. Urine, blood and hair samples were analyzed for mercury (N = 1252). Questionnaires, standardized medical examinations and neuropsychological tests were used. Participants were grouped into: Controls (N = 209), living in an exposed area (N = 408), working with mercury as panners (N = 181), working with mercury as amalgam burners (N = 454). Chi2 test, linear trend test, Mann-Whitney test, Kruskal-Wallis test, correlation coefficient, Spearman’s rho, and analysis of variance tests were used. An algorithm was used to define participants with chronic mercury intoxication. Results Mean mercury concentrations in all exposed subgroups were elevated and above threshold limits, with amalgam burners showing highest levels. Typical symptoms of chronic metallic mercury intoxication were tremor, ataxia, coordination problems, excessive salivation and metallic taste. Participants from the exposed groups showed poorer results in different neuropsychological tests in comparison to the control group. Fifty-four percent of the high-exposed group (amalgam burners) were diagnosed as being mercury-intoxicated, compared to 0% within the control group (Chi2 p < 0.001). Conclusions Chronic mercury intoxication, with tremor, ataxia and other neurological symptoms together with a raised body burden of mercury was clinically diagnosed in exposed people in artisanal small-scale mining areas. The mercury exposure needs to be urgently reduced. Health care systems need to be prepared for this emerging problem of chronic mercury intoxication among exposed people. Opis:
COVID-19 manifests itself in a wide spectrum of clinical symptoms, both in terms of their variety and severity. It can be asymptomatic or abortive, mild, moderate, severe and lightning, as septic with multiple organ failure and shock Typical leading symptoms of COVID-19 are: high fever poorly responding to drugs, severe loss of strength, chest pain, dyspnoea, pain headaches, bone and joint pain and muscle pain, until the onset of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, many publications mention among the possible symptoms also others, not related to the involvement of the lower respiratory tract. These are gastrointestinal disorders, damage to the central and peripheral nervous system, catarrh of the upper respiratory tract and dysfunctions of the sensory organs. The aim of this literature review was to determine the frequency of various head and neck dysfunctions that are part of COVID-19. Symptoms of conjunctivitis, nasal mucosa, pharynx and larynx are reported by about of patients, but they do not always occur at the same time, as in infections caused, for example, by rhinoviruses. Anosmi / hyposmia or ageusia / hypogeusia occur with a similar frequency. Symptoms of damage to the equilibrium system, such as dizziness, are reported by approx. 1/3, vertigo and hearing loss approx. 5-6%, tinnitus approx. 10% of patients. Reports of coexistence with COVID-19 of peripheral paresis of the facial nerve are so far relatively few and often included in the neurological disorders, the frequency of which is also about 1/3 of COVID-19 cases. Importantly, both catarrhal symptoms and the others listed here may precede, co-occur or follow the appearance of the leading symptoms of COVID-19. They can also be the only symptoms of this disease. This should prompt otorhinolaryngologists to be particularly vigilant in this regard
Objawy nieżytu spojówek, błony śluzowej nosa, gardła i krtani podaje ok.

Study Objective: To assess the presence and severity of aural pressure/tinnitus, hearing loss, unsteadiness, nausea and vomiting in MD patients during remission. Setting: Urban tertiary care referral hospital in a developing country. Methodology: Consecutive patients with diagnosis of Definite Meniere were selected from the Balance and Dizziness Clinic of National Hospital Abuja for the study. Quality of life assessment was carried out using 3 validated tools – Modified MD-POSI, Vertigo Symptom Scale and Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI). Patients were included only when they have been vertigo free for at least 4 weeks. Pure tone audiometry was carried out in those with subjective hearing loss at recruitment and 4 weeks later. Results: A total of 26 patients completed the study. All had cinnarizine for acute vertigo control and Betahistine for maintenance of vertigo control. There was female preponderance (17:9). The age range was 32–56 years. The duration of MD ranges from 4 months to 12 years. The total and subscale MD-POSI scores for “between attacks” significantly correlated with hearing, unsteadiness and tinnitus/pressure when compared to during attack. 69.2 per cent of participants experienced symptoms of unsteadiness during remission. 13/26 of participants reported persistent, though less annoying tinnitus that poorly correlated with THI score during remission. Conclusion: Our study showed that significant non-vertigo symptoms affect the quality of life during remission. Perhaps there is need to properly define, in future studies, what constitutes remission in patients with MD.

Objective: to evaluate knowledge about phytoestrogens among Polish menopausal women, and to assess their applicability and safety. Methods: The study included 300 women from the Wielkopolska Region, aged 40-60 years. The questionnaire was designed especially for the study. Crosstabulation tables and Perason’s chi-squared test was used for the statistical analysis. Results: 147 respondents continued to menstruate. Hormone Replacement Therapy was used by 69 subjects; 114 respondents, used phytoestrogens. The place of inhabitance influenced the reasons for not using phytoestrogens. Media, healthcare providers and personnel were the main source of information about phytoestrogens. Most of respondents perceived phytoestrogens as substances displaying a beneficial effect on health. 69% of the subjects reported positive effects of non-hormonal preparations for the relief of climacteric symptoms, mainly reduction in hot flushes and alleviation of joint pain. Conclusions: Our results support the postulate of efficacy and safety of phytoestrogen use to relieve climacteric symptoms. Both education and place of inhabitance appear to affect the opinions of the affected females about phytoestrogen use during menopause.

Customers of pharmacies in conversations with their pharmacists, when asking for help in choosing a treatment, often refer to various symptoms, including depression. Communication with the pharmacists is an important factor in shaping the consumers’ health knowledge and behaviors. The aim of the study was to investigate specific characteristics of pharmacist – patient conversations during which patients refer to depressive symptoms. The questionnaire included questions addressing various independent factors related to the communicative situation which may affect the number and kind of reported depressive symptoms. The study participants were 60 pharmacists (with university level and postsecondary education). The results of the statistical analysis confirmed the hypotheses about differences in reported symptoms of depression. A hypothesis that the confidence of customers in their communication with the pharmacists increases with the age and education of the pharmacists was confirmed only in part. In addition, the results revealed that factors such as community size, number of pharmacies in a community and number of employees per work shift significantly correlate with more intensive communication of depressive symptoms.

The purpose of this study was to distinguish histopathological changes in carp fish (Carassius auratus) infected by Aeromonas hydrophila with different densities. Five treatments were used in the survey for this research method. The treatments used were bacterial infusion of A. hydrophila in the test fish through intramuscular injection with various densities, namely: A. without infection, B: 105 CFU/mL, C: 106 CFU/mL, D: 107 CFU/mL, and E: 108 CFU/mL. The parameters observed were histopathological changes in gill organs, kidneys and hearts of carp fish (gold fish). Data from histopathological observations were analyzed descriptively. The results present gill organs, liver and kidneys of carp fish infected with the bacteria A. hydrophila at various densities experiencing histopathological changes in the form of hemorrhages, necrosis and congestion and hyperplasia of the renal tubules. Other changes that occur were in the kidney organ experiencing a melanomacrophage center (MC). Tubules were coated with connective tissue and lymphocyte infiltration. The most severe organ damage that occurs in carp fish infected with the bacteria A. hydrophila at a density of 108 CFU/mL (treatment E) is shown by a low survival of 5%.

Introduction and objectives. Although physical activity has been found to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases and depression in the general population, little is known about physical patterns and the link with postnatal depressive symptoms and awareness of cardiovascular risk factors in postpartum women. The aim of this study was to examine physical activity patterns and their link to depressive symptoms in postpartum women. The secondary endpoint was the assessment of health awareness in women six months after delivery. Material and methods. Eighty postpartum women with a mean age of 27±4 years (group A – 40 physically active women, group B – 40 women leading a sedentary lifestyle) completed a self-report questionnaire and The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) questionnaire. Results. In group A, the types of physical activity undertaken in the six-month period after delivery were as follows: 20 women – housework (180 min/session), 18 women – gentle walks (180 min/session), 16 women – group fitness classes (60 min/session), 6 – rapid walking (40 min/session), 3 women – swimming (60 min/session), 2 women – jogging (45 min/session), 1 woman – squash, (45 min/session) 1 – dancing (90 min/session), 1 – tennis (60min/session). Group B declared a sedentary lifestyle and physical activity of less than 30 min a day. The level of health awareness was statistically better in women who were physically active six months after delivery than in women who led a sedentary lifestyle. On a scale with a maximum 55 points, the mean scores were 47.4 in group A and 31.2 in group B (p=0.001). Depressive symptoms were more pronounced in group B. Twenty seven women from group A and three women from group B returned to their pre-pregnancy weight (p=0.04). Conclusions. Women who were physically active after delivery were characterized by higher health awareness and more frequent return to pre-pregnancy weight. Physical activity may be important for reducing the risk of postnatal depression.

The genus Phytopythium is a relatively new group of organisms distinguished from the Pythium genus. These are organisms closely related to Pythium and Phytophthora, with similar structure and biology. Despite many similarities, this genus is characterised by several morphological features that allow it to be easily identified. Until now, more than 20 species belong to this genus, most of which are saprophytic organisms. However, there is also a group of species particularly dangerous to plants. These species include, among others, Pp. litorale, Pp. helicoides and Pp. vexans. The purpose of this work was to collect information about these organisms and present them in a condensed form. The study contains basic information about the history of the type of separation, differences in morphology distinctive genus of Phytopythium, Phytophthora and Pythium and information about diseases and host plants. Information is also provided on the potential threat posed by these organisms to forest ecosystems.

Antraknoza ziemniaka jest chorobą skórki bulw i liści ziemniaka wywoływaną przez grzyba Colletotrichum coccodes (Wallr.) S. J. Hughes (synonimy C. atramentarium (Berk. & Br. Taub) and C. phomoides).
Black dot is a tuber blemish and foliar disease of potato caused by the fungus Colletotrichum coccodes (Wallr.) S. J. Hughes (synonyms C. atramentarium (Berk. & Br. Taub) and C. phomoides). It is common in most potato growing areas in the world and may cause up to 30%–75% yield reduction on susceptible cultivars. Colletotrichum coccodes can colonize all underground parts (daughter tubers, stolons and roots), basal stems and foliage of potato plants. The typical symptoms of the disease are small black sclerotia on the roots, stems, stolons, and progeny tubers of infected plants. The relative importance of Colletotrichum coccodes on potato has increased, in part due to the growing market for fresh, prepacked potatoes, which has resulted in an increase in the demand for washed potatoes with a high-quality appearance.

Trichotillomania, also known as hair pulling disorder, is a chronic psychiatric condition common among women. It is a condition that causes impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. The rate of presentation of such cases to medical practitioners is low, as affected individuals conceal it because of the shame associated with hair pulling behaviour. This makes the aetiology and management of the condition to be fairly understood; creating the need for extensive empirical research. This paper discusses the clinical and epidemiological features of trichotillomania and its management.

Introduction: Newborns born prematurely and treated in intensive care units are at greater risk of experiencing pain than patients treated in other units. Purpose: To evaluate the severity of pain perceived by children during the performance of medical procedures related to the treatment and care process. Materials and methods: The study was conducted at one of the Intensive Care Units in Opole. The study group consisted of 100 newborns, 60% of the subjects were prematurely born newborns, and 40% - were full-term. The degree of procedural pain associated with blood collection, peripheral puncture insertion, upper respiratory tract suction, gastric tube insertion and ophthalmic examination was assessed by an observation method using the standard Neonatal Infant Pain Scale Form (NIPS). Results: Out of the analysed medical procedures, 100% of children experienced acute, severe pain over the course of suction and ophthalmological examination. The highest perception of pain was experienced by 88.3% of premature newborns and 71.8% of full-term newborns. Over the course of medical procedures, 84% of male and 79.6% female newborns experienced acute pain. It was shown that the degree of pain perception was determined by the type of performed medical procedure (p=0.001) and the gestational age of the newborn (p=0.037). On the other hand, there was no correlation between the sex of the newborn child and the degree of pain perception (p=0.758). Conclusions: Based on the foregoing study result, bearing in mind the need to minimise the effects of pain stimulation, it seems important to use standardised tools to assess the severity of pain in newborns treated in Intensive Care Units on a larger scale.

Accurate diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AA) is still a problem and is not always easy, even for experienced surgeons. Studies have shown that 20 to 30% of the appendices removedwere normal. Therefore, various scoring systems have been developed to aid in the diagnosis of doubtful cases and reduce the number of unnecessary appendectomies. The aim of this study was to assess the diagnostic value of different scoring systems in acute appendicitis. Material and methods. The study involved 94 patients who underwent laparotomy due to suspected acute appendicitis. Medical examination at hospital admission was performed by a resident and a general surgery specialist. The probability of AA was evaluated using six different scoring systems: Alvarado, Fenyo, Eskelinen, Ohman, Tzankis, and RIPASA. The resident calculated the results in individual systems. The decision to perform the operation was taken by a specialist surgeon who did not know the results. Results. Normal appendix was removed in 26% of cases. Eskelinen, RIPASA and Alvarado systems showed highest sensitivity (99%, 88% and 85%, respectively). Tzankis and Fenyo systems showed highest specificity (62% and 50%, respectively). Conclusions. Our study has shown limited value of scoring systems for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. The systems may improve diagnostic accuracy as they require obtaining a more detailed medical history, and making a more thorough and organized data analysis. However, the scoring systems should be treated only as an aid to diagnosis

Psychological distress associated with body image disorders in patients with breast cancer is well described in the literature. Given the known insults to body image caused by both disease and oncological treatment, body image distress is commonplace within this patient population. Stress is also a frequent sequela of a diagnosis of and treatment for cancer and may manifest various forms. This study undertook to investigate the nature of stress and body image distress within a cohort of 80 female breast cancer patients drawn from three outpatient cancer treatment facilities in the Durban, South Africa region and to examine its correlation with psychological and behavioural indices reported by these patients as compared to a group of 80 female patients undergoing treatment for other types of cancer. The results indicated that although there were no significant differences between the two groups in terms of depressive symptomatology and measures of self-esteem, where scores largely fell within normal ranges, the breast cancer patients experienced higher levels of body image dissatisfaction as compared to the other group and that stress tended to be expressed in psychological and behavioural indices as opposed to physiological expression.

We present the case of a subject developing anosmia, preceded by nasal transient irritation and short lasting phantosmia and torqosmia, upon re-entrance into a room treated with a pyrethrin-based insecticide. The concentration of the insecticide in the room is unknown, but relatively high levels are predicted basing upon the modality of exposure and by the irritation symptoms in the subject. Despite corticosteroids therapy, anosmia has persisted unmodifi ed for more than three years; according to, and based on evidence in the literature on olfactory disturbance prognosis, anosmia in this patient is likely to be permanent. The signifi cance of this case report is related to the current wide use of insecticides containing pyrethrin and pyrethroids and highlights the need for more adequate attention to lowering airborne concentrations of pyrethrins and pyrethroids prior to re-entering the treated rooms. In particular, in a closed space sprayed with pyrethrins and pyrethroids insecticide, any irritant symptoms and/or dysosmia should be immediately considered relevant warning signs, and must be avoided.

Objectives: The aim of our study was to assess the health conditions and subjective symptoms of the inhabitants living in the base stations vicinity and to analyse the relationship between the complaints and level of exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF). Materials and Methods: Our study was performed in housing estates located in five regions of Łódź. The electric field measurements were performed in the buildings located closest to the azimuth of the antennas. Respondents were selected by trained interviewers using an uniform procedure. The number of the households to be examined was set at a minimum of 420. The questionnaire contained: demographic data, occupational and environmental exposure to EMF, health condition, subjective complaints. Results were adjusted for confounders (age, gender, EMF at the workplace and EMF emitted by household equipment) using multiple regression model. Results: 181 men and 319 women from 500 households were examined. Electric field above 0.8 V/m was recorded in 12% of flats. There was no significant correlation between electric field strength and the distance of examined flats from the base stations. To make possible comparison with relevant literature, we analysed also the frequency of the reported symptoms vs. the distance. Headache was declared by 57% people, most frequently (36.4%) living 100–150 m away from the base station compared to people living at longer distances (p = 0.013). 24.4% subjects, mostly living at a distance above 150 m, declared impaired memory. Difference was statistically significant in comparison with people living at other distances (p = 0.004). Conclusions: The explanation why we did not find any correlation between the electric field strength and frequency of subjective symptoms but found a correlation between subjective symptoms and distance from base station needs further studies. Maybe new metrics of exposure assessment should be adopted for this purpose.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to test how selected respondents (psychologists and police officers) evaluate the diagnostic value of symptoms (cues) of deception listed in literature on the subject. To achieve that, 16 verbal and non-verbal (behavioural) symptoms listed in literature as most typical and most frequently accompanying deceit were ever located by 100 police officers and 101 psychologists (n=201). Their task was to group the symptoms according to the following categories: “oft en present”, “rarely present”, and “never present”. Both the groups of respondents claimed that in their work they have to frequently decide whether their interlocutors tell the truth or lie, and are convinced that they are capable of accurate detection of deception through their assessment of verbal and non-verbal (behavioural) symptoms accompanying lie. The latter belief is clearly refuted by the results of all known experimental studies. In fact, police officers and psychologists agreed that the most diagnostic symptom is “avoidance of eye contact” (143 respondents categorised it as often present). “High frequency of eye blinking” was considered least diagnostic of the symptoms, with only 47 respondents claiming that it is frequent, together with “head scratching” with 51 considering it as occurring “often”). Convergence of the respondents’ opinions was high. No significant differences between the occupational and age groups, and genders were discovered. The results of the study remain coherent with the results of studies by other authors maintaining that the skill of detecting deception in the interlocutor is determined neither by education, nor occupation, nor gender, nor the age of the person performing the detection.

The SARS-CoV-2 causing COVID-19 has spread around theworld at a rapid pace leading the WHO to declare a pandemic.COVID-19 is most often associated with respiratory symptoms.Unfortunately, on the basis of previous reports, symptoms fromother systems were also observed including cardiovascular, digestive and nervous. Neurological symptoms commonly associated with COVID-19 are headache and loss of smell and taste. However, these are not the only symptoms from the nervoussystem that may occur in the course of COVID-19. Although theelderly with chronic diseases are most at risk, the virus also affects children. Most of them are infected mildly or asymptomatically. However, there are cases when neurological symptomsoccur in the course of the disease, not infrequently leading toa life-threatening condition. The aim of the study is to summarize the information on the previously described neurologicalsymptoms of COVID-19 in the pediatric population, to evaluatepossible pathomechanisms of their formation and to comparethem with the symptoms occurring in adults.

Opis:
Autism is a disorder that becomes today the subject of many interdisciplinary studies. You can talk about a wide spectrum of autism. It concerns adults, but also children. In the article special attention is paid to autism during preschool and early school age. It should be noted that the term "autism" has enough short history as it appeared in the 40s of the twentieth century. This concept can be understood in three main areas: 1) breaking social ties or limited ability to enter into interpersonal relationships; 2) abnormal communication; 3) stiffness behaviour, restricted repertoire of activities and interests connected with to the lack of imagination. Another element of the article is the presentation of the core symptoms of autism. It is worth noting that autism is reflected by the diversity of its syndromes. It was important to pay special attention to autism. The specificity of childhood autism must be taken into account in the selection of methods situations and psychotherapeutic techniques. The point is that the effectiveness of the therapy does not undermine the fundamental norms and moral principles. One of the basic principles is the trust and respecting professional secrecy. In this context, there is a very important proposal for the therapists and other professionals working with autistic children to constantly work on raising not only professional skills, but also care about raising the moral qualifications.

Opis:
Objectives Manicurists are exposed to various chemicals in nail and skin care products and may develop ocular, nasal, respiratory or skin adverse reactions to them. To investigate the occurrence of ocular, nasal, respiratory and skin problems among manicurists and to identify their causal factors, particularly allergic etiology and occupational origin. Material and Methods Manicurists employed in beauty salons in the central region of Poland were invited to fill in the questionnaire and undergo medical examination, skin prick tests with common aeroallergens, patch tests with European Baseline Series and (Meth)Acrylates Series-Nails and spirometry. Results In the questionnaire adverse nasal symptoms were reported by 70%, ocular – by 58%, respiratory – by 42%, hand eczema – by 43% of manicurists. In the medical interview, the frequency of those complaints was lower: nasal ones – 41%, ocular – 24%, cough – 18%, hand skin dryness – 20%, hand eczema – 6%. Cough and hand skin dryness occurred significantly more frequently than in the case of controls. Contact allergy was found for 41% of manicurists and 35% of controls. The prevalence of nickel sensitization was high in both groups (38% and 27%, respectively). Only 3 manicurists reacted to (meth)acrylates. The frequency of atopic diseases was similar in compared groups. Irritant nasal and respiratory reactions were significantly more prevalent among manicurists (nasal – 18% vs. 2%, p < 0.01; respiratory – 18% vs. 1%, p < 0.001). Work-related nasal irritant reactions were finally diagnosed for 19%, ocular ones – for 13%, respiratory – for 18% and within hand skin – for 23% of manicurists. Conclusions The frequency of workattributed irritant mucosal and skin symptoms among manicurists is high. Exposure to acrylates is an important source of mucosal irritant reactions while occlusive gloves cause irritation of hand skin. The prevalence of nickel allergy among Polish females is high. Opis:
RSI and RFS questionnaires are a basic and common method used for initial diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR). However, they only measure symptoms which may or may not be concurrent with LPR. The severity of these symptoms is assessed either by the patients themselves (with the use of the Reflux Symptoms Index – RSI) or by the doctor specialising in the field (with the use of the Reflux Finding Score – RFS). Therefore, the findings of the questionnaire may to a large extent depend on the study population – its demographic and cultural characteristics; the extent to which the medical terms used in the questionnaires are understood; and on the linguistic aspects and translation choices. As for the Polish language versions of these questionnaires, there is no reliable analysis of their consistency and if they reach the assumed goal. The studies we have conducted on a group of 84 patients show that we encounter at least one of the above-mentioned problems. Therefore, to make the questionnaires reliable and useful for diagnosis, it is necessary to conduct a formal validation of their translation and to conduct studies on reference groups.

The paper presents results of the calculation, based on simplified engine model, aimed on prediction of IAS (Instantaneous Angular Speed) of the crankshaft fluctuations under faulty engine condition. Gas forces were calculated basing on results of in-cylinder pressure measurements which were used as inputs to the dynamic model. Mass forces were calculated basing on technical particulars of the engine Sulzer 3Al 25/30.Measurements of the incylinder pressure was carried out at laboratory stand in Gdynia Maritime University, equipped with diesel engine Sulzer 3AL 25/30 driving electro-generator. Sulzer 3AL 25/30 is three cylinder, medium speed, four stroke marine diesel engine, with maximum output 408 kW at 750 rpm. In order to evaluate of IAS model utility for diagnostic prediction of the engine behavior, two kinds of malfunctions of engine’s fuel system were simulated. First malfunction was fuel leakage from high pressure line; the second was partly plugged injector’s nozzle. Construction of high pressure fuel pump enable to fuel leakage simulation. The engine was run out at load 250 kW what is around 65% of nominal. Results of all measurement were smoothed in order to eliminate a noise using SG (Savitzky – Golay) filter. Results of fault condition modeling were compared with healthy engine model and with results of in -cylinder pressure diagrams, in order to create a map of deviations from normal condition.

Opis:
Introduction. Every farming method, whether conventional or organic, has been associated with some sort of risky behaviors leading to health issues among farmers. Substantial evidence is not available in the literature to determine whether the magnitudes of health outcomes vary between conventional and organic farmers. The study investigated whether selfreported neurological and mental health symptoms differ between conventional and organic farmers living in Indiana, USA. Materials and method. A self-reported questionnaire survey collected information from 200 conventional and 157 organic farmers of Indiana on demographic characteristics, depression and neurological symptoms. Statistical analyses were conducted to observe the differences in self-reported symptoms by groups of farmers. Results. It was observed that the conventional farmers had significantly higher age-adjusted mean neurological symptom score (p<0.01) than the organic farmers. Regression models revealed positive and significant associations of conventional farming with total (β =1.34; p=0.02), sensory (β =0.83; p=0.001) and behavioural (β =0.09; p=0.03) symptoms after accounting for age, income, education and years in farming. Positive but non-significant associations were also observed in conventional farmers with cognitive and motor symptoms, and with all subscales of depression symptoms in the adjusted models. Conclusion. The findings obtained suggest the importance of a larger study to further explain the difference in mental and neurological health effects in these two categories of farmers.
