Creating a state’s symbolic space is one of the most important competencies of the authorities. It manifests itself in, inter alia, establishing topographies of memory (organizing sites of memory), erecting monuments, appropriate naming of streets, squares, public institutions and organization of the calendar of holidays. Holidays and celebrations are a great tool for communication between the authorities and the citizens, and one of the basic elements of the historical politics system of a state. The aim of the present study is to show – on the case study of the Polish calendar of public holidays in the 20th and 21st centuries – the mechanisms and tools used by the government to build a proper historical narrative.

The article analyzes the emotional aspect of autobiographical places in the works of Bohumil Hrabal. Its author observes that both the short and the long prosaic forms by the Czech writer are often set in the space stretching between ateliers of pubs and en plein-airs of Nymburk on the Elbe River (“the town on water”), forests of Kersko, and the degraded smelter plant Krásná Poldi in Kladno. The list of Hrabal’s locations does not end here and also includes the “borderland areas”, such as the control room and platforms of the railway station in Kostomlaty nad Labem; the basement of the wastepaper warehouse in Spalona Street in Prague (and pubs nearby); the author’s flat (which had neither windows nor a toilet) located at 24 Na Hrázi (Věčnosti) Street and many other streets leading directly to the Svět pub Special attention is also given to a place that the author had never visited – Drohobych, but got to know through the prose of Bruno Schulz.

State celebrations, anniversaries of important historical events and their observance are one of the main channels of communication between ruling elite and society that shape the state symbolic space. In addition to establish ing memorial sites, erecting monuments, founding institutions focused on remembrance, they are the most important way to create a narrative of the state’s past. In Poland - regardless of time and political system - special attention was paid to creating a calendar of holidays and anniversaries, and the manner they were celebrated. These festivities were and are still considered to be fundamental tools used in Polish politics of history, both at statewide and local level. Their importance in the regions can - depending on how the local elites exercise their powers - vary from much larger in relation to the central state level to entirely negligible. The aim of this study is to present mechanisms and tools used by local authorities in building an appropriate historical narrative using just those tools.

The author reads Adam Mickiewicz’s [Urywek Pamiętnika Polki] in the context of symbolic space of a house “from the basement to the attic” suggested by Gaston Bachelard. Fe-nomenological doubts of French critic provoke questions concerning “beloved space” and “shelter” in Mickiewicz’s text. Deconstrucion that leads to accepting Ludwisia’s perspective reveals vertical dimension of the house and enables to designate places for figures living there. The most important belongs to a modest servant girl.

The paper is a comparative analysis of the circumstances influencing symbolic spaces in four movies by Franz Weihmayr in the years 1931–1942: Dzikie Pola [Wild Fields], Halutzim, La Habanera and The Great Love. The analysis allows for delineating the development of the German cinematographer Franz Weihmayr’s career, which, in the context of historical-political and ideological-artistic circumstances, can serve as an example of a broader phenomenon: a particular fluctuation of choices made by German cinematographers over the Weimar, Nazi, and post-war periods. This analysis is of pioneering importance because of the paucity of publication heretofore dedicated to Weihmayr’s works, who at the time worked together with, among others, Leni Riefenstahl, Frank Wysbar, and Hans Detlef Sierck, as well as Polish directors, such as Józef Lejtes and Aleksander Ford. The framework for semiotic analyses of the symbolic spaces of the movies mentioned above are two groups of contexts connected with ideas stemming from contradictory bases: the idea of cosmopolitism and the idea of Nazism.

W artykule podjęto próbę przybliżenia związków kartografii z kulturą na przykładzie map Śląska powstałych w dobie nowożytnej (XVI-XVIII w.). Pokazano, jak świadomość regionalna mieszkańców, kształtująca się w tym okresie pod wpływem silnych bodźców społecznych (ideowych, gospodarczych, kulturowych), zaznaczyła się symbolicznie w ówczesnych zapisach przestrzeni regionu - na planach miast i mapach całego obszaru poprzez między innymi łączenie informacji topograficznej z przesłaniem ideowym. Przedstawione przykłady różnych form realizacji społecznych potrzeb wskazały na udział kartografów Śląska w tworzeniu jego wizerunku jako krainy geograficzno-historycznej ze swoją terytorialną specyfiką, ale i silnej dzielnicy administracyjnej, mającej bogate tradycje kulturowe, mocne podstawy ekonomiczne i ogromny potencjał ludzki, także w wymiarze intelektualnym, naukowym.
Symbolic space is usually associated with cultural and spiritual content which is reflected in the record or spatial landscape. The cultural and spiritual content includes caring for the past and tradition, strengthening or building identification with the region, creating its local uniqueness, searching for and discovering cultural identity. Symbolic space with internal semantic and axiological code has found a place also in European regional cartography, beginning from the earliest maps. It was present in an especially interesting way on maps of historical-geographical regions, which were shaped in a natural process of development. Their inhabitants, having a high level of regional consciousness and considerable cultural achievements felt a need to illustrate them in a spatial way. One of such regions was Silesia (Śląsk). The article shows, using 16th to 18th century maps of Silesia, various examples of how this particular need of marking cultural individuality was realized. They have been referred to entries which constitute the content layout. The first entry shows the Silesians' educational and intellectual ambitions using as an example information about the first school. The information was given on M. Helwig's map and corrected on the first economic map of Silesia by K.F. Hentschel. Next, social needs have been shown: cultural identification with the region, memory of spiritual and material values, pride on executing the law (with the examples of Głogów and Wrocław) and the emergence of legends about places, which were becoming emblematic for local community (Scholtz's garden in Wrocław). Instances of political re-sentiments, connected to changes in Silesia's borders (the świebodzińska enclave on J.J. Lidl's map) appearing on the maps have also been mentioned. Presented examples have also allowed to signal a wider problem worth research - the influence of spatial conditioning on the form and content of early cartographic activity as a part of cultural heritage.

Aim. The aim of the research is to study the symbolic capital of northern cities (semiotic potential) contained in "urban texts" and the influence of the historical memory of a multiethnic region on the political process of the region and the country as a whole, through a comprehensive and interdisciplinary study of the symbolic space of cities in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). Methods. The study used the cognitive approach, the method of space-time analysis, and the method of historicism and questionnaire survey. Symbolic space as a text is a heterogeneous content. Results. The results of the study show the importance of a symbolic resource as a brand tool, first, depending on the political context and introduction into the collective memory through a constant "reminder" of its importance and significance in the socio-cultural and everyday life of citizens. The resulting databases of monuments served as the basis for compiling a virtual album of monuments and art objects in the cities of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The research results can practically be applied in the field of education, politics, culture, in the study and promotion of the cultural and historical heritage of the regions of Russia. Conclusions. The urgent problem is the task of preserving the accumulated experience and values, places of memory, relics of the past, as well as ideas about the past that are stored in the memory of its inhabitants and the transfer of this knowledge to the younger generation.

Celem artykułu jest ukazanie sposobu prezentowania, opisywania i wartościowania przestrzeni w polskiej literaturze Young Adult. Napięcie między społeczną przestrzenią a doświadczeniem podmiotu wyzwala proces poznawania i samopoznania kluczowy dla problematyki literatury młodzieżowej zwyczajowo podejmującej temat dorastania i dojrzewania. Rytualna i symboliczna przestrzeń (szkoła – dom – najbliższa okolica) ukształtowana przez zbiorowe wyobrażenia kulturowe staje się dla bohatera zarówno przestrzenią odtrącenia, upokorzenia oraz agresji, jak i przestrzenią oswojoną czy miejscem spotkania. Artykuł jest próbą odpowiedzi na pytania: Jak literatura YA kreuje wyobrażone miejsca i obszary? W jaki sposób doświadczanie i doznawanie przestrzeni (miejsca?) wpływa (może wpływać) na samoświadomość podmiotu – bohatera literackiego? W jaki sposób akt lektury może kształtować świat wartościmłodego czytelnika? Jak miejsca i przestrzenie wykreowane w najnowszej literaturze YA sytuują się wobec wybranych tradycyjnych ujęć tematu? Materiałem badawczym są wybrane polskie powieści z nurtu YA po 2004 roku. Artykuł prowadzi do zarysowania modelu egzystencjalnej i performatywnej lektury przestrzeni wyobrażonej.
The aim of the article is to show how to present, describe and value space in Polish literature Young Adults. The tension between the social space and the subject’s experience triggers the process of cognition and self-knowledge that are crucial for the issue of YA literature, usually addressing the subject of adolescence and maturation. The ritual and symbolic space (school - home - the closest neighbourhood) shaped by collective cultural images, for the protagonist becomes both the space of rejection, humiliation and aggression, as well as the safe and meeting space. The article is an attempt to answer the following questions: How does the YA literature create imagined places and areas? How does experiencing and experiencing space (or are) affect (or can affect) the self-consciousness of the subject – the literary hero? How can the act of reading shape the world of the young reader’s values? How do the places and spaces created in the latest YA literature place themselves against selected traditional approach to the subject? The research material will be selected Polish novels from the current YA current literature written after 2004. The article provides an outline of the existential and performative model of reading imaginary space.

Niniejszy tekst stanowi efekt badań teoretycznych dotyczących codzienności wychowania, interpretowanej jako przestrzeń symboliczna. Prezentowane rozważania osadzone zostały w perspektywie paradygmatu interpretatywnego i odnoszą się do relacji istniejącej między teorią oraz praktyką pedagogiczną, mającej szczególne znaczenie dla rozumienia rzeczywistości społeczno-kulturowej, w tym codzienności wychowania. Codzienność wychowania rozumiana jest tutaj jako taka przestrzeń, której właściwości są źródłem aktywności podejmowanych przez osoby w niej funkcjonujące oraz szczególny fenomen, którego istota uobecnia się w myślach i działaniach człowieka. Jako taka jest ona źródłem wielorakich doświadczeń osadzonych w różnorodnych kontekstach ludzkiego funkcjonowania, także w różnorodnych perspektywach oglądu działalności pedagogicznej. Kategoria codzienności, w ten sposób rozumiana, niesie ze sobą określoną moc interpretacyjną, mającą szczególne znaczenie dla gromadzenia wiedzy o świecie życia codziennego (w tym o rzeczywistości wychowania) oraz dla realizacji badań zarówno inter-, jak i transdyscyplinarnych dotyczących tej przestrzeni.
The presented paper is a result of theoretical research on the everyday reality of education, interpreted as a symbolic space. The reflection has been set in the perspective of interpretative paradigm and refers to the relation between pedagogical theory and practice that is especially important for the understanding of the social and cultural reality including the everyday reality of education. This concept is understood here as a space whose properties are the source of activities undertaken by people that function in it as well as a unique phenomenon the nature of which is manifested in human thoughts and actions. As such, it is a source of multiple experiences set in various contexts of human activity, also in different perspectives on pedagogical activity. The category of everyday relity, comprehended in this way, has particular interpretative power that is especially significant for gathering knowledge about the world of everyday life (including the reality of education) and for the implementation of research, both inter- and transdisciplinary, related to this space.

The article is devoted to the first three volumes of Michael Meinert’s Hochwald-Saga (The High Forest Saga) series, whose action takes place in Silesia in the 19th century; these are are: Gescheiterte Flucht (Failed Escape), Der zerrissene Graf (Lost count) and Ehrlicher Schwindler (Honest swindler). In these works, the author breaks away from the stereotypical perception of Silesia as a space of memory, the critical turning point of which was the end of World War II. He does not create images of a “lost homeland” – Silesia becomes an attractive historical space for him precisely because of its past character, and is a fascinating setting for novels with historical plots. At the same time, he revives the history of Silesia as a province of the Kingdom of Prussia and later of the German Empire. He also creates images of space, assigning them additional meanings, which is in line with the idea of space semantisation promoted by Yuri Lotman. An extremely important element in the composition of Meinert’s works is the creation of Silesia as a sacred space in which existential, axiological and theological questions are asked. In his understanding, places become a humanised space which has its own characteristic identity and often depicts the emotional states or character traits of the novel’s figures; moreover, it plays an important role in shaping their attitudes and values. The purpose of this text is to analyse the poetics of Meinert’s above-mentioned novels with particular emphasis on the topos of Silesia, its characteristics, and the role and functions it plays in them. As it is closely related to the poetics of place, attention is also paid to selected aspects of geopoetics in the sense proposed by Elżbieta Rybicka.

Immeasurable symbolic values of a local space constitute the basis and motive for designing mental maps. Mental maps consist of universal elements (e.g. communication paths, area borders) and particular geographical categories (e.g. world directions, known and characteristic towns). The latter are the centre of connotations, and the source of metaphors for characterising local cultural areas at the level of mental maps. The analysis of Bielsko-Biała reveals representations of this town as Manchester, Vienna, and Berlin, as well as the representations of the fragments of spaces of other town such as Paris and New York. In each scale and in each case, mental maps reflect the socio-cultural characteristic of the local space.

As couples tend to be referred to as “being together,” long-distance partners, who spend most of their time apart and in diff erent spaces, might face a challenge delineating and validating their relationship. Through in-depth interviews with 20 couples in a long-distance relationship, this study explores how long-distance partners linguistically and symbolically mark the boundaries of their relationship, and also transcend any real or perceived gaps between distance and closeness in the process. While they rarely shared a physical space, my participants created joint socio-mental spaces, which enhanced their sense of belonging and helped to expand defi nitions of intimacy and space.

On the basis of the existing and unquestioned linguistic stance, a division of all the living creatures inhabiting the Earth into those which do not have language (i.e. prehuman and languageless) and those who have language (i.e. the genus Homo sapiens) is postulated. The paper briefly discusses a rich diversity of communication modes occurring in the domain of the prehuman communication systems, such as the auditory, visual, tactile, olfactory, electric, thermal, and seismic ones, with appropriate graphic illustrations. Furthermore, on the basis of the phenomenon of the observable shrinking of this diversity and the key position of the human species, it postulates the necessity of preserving this diversity in the context of biodiversity. This major postulate is in accord with the need to intensify attempts to preserve biodiversity as well as preserve the remaining diversity on the level of the prehuman communication systems as a major challenge of modern humanity. In this context, the human species is considered here as the species of the ‘overseers’ and ‘archivers’ of all the existing communication systems existing on the Earth as the carrier of the tree of life.

Nieco ponad 20 lat temu Wacław Piotrowski napisał, że „tożsamość miasta określają jego najbardziej istotne cechy”. Takich cech poszukiwać można w różnych kontekstach związanych z miastem: historii, architekturze, charakterystyce struktury społecznej, ale także, a może przede wszystkim w miejskich przestrzeniach publicznych. W kontekście socjologicznym nie chodzi tu o sam układ urbanistyczny miasta, ale też o jego historię, wydarzenia przeszłe, jakie miały miejsce w przestrzeni, i teraźniejsze, które w niej się rozgrywają, sposoby jej społecznego użytkowania codziennego i odświętnego, ale też o mniej lub bardziej oczywiste znaczenia, jakie przestrzeń komunikuje. Tym samym przestrzeń publiczna współtworzy tożsamość miasta. W niektórych miastach jest ona oczywista, a w innych skomplikowane losy historyczne, ale też sam proces wytwarzania przestrzeni miejskiej rodzi wiele niejednoznaczności. Z jednej strony mogą one fascynować i umożliwiać osiągnięcie przewagi konkurencyjnej nad innymi miastami, a z drugiej stanowić balast dla miasta i jego rozwoju. Tym samym warto zastanowić się, na ile przestrzeń publiczna miast stanowi konstytutywny element tożsamości miasta i w jakim stopniu wykorzystywana jest w procesie budowania narracji tożsamościowej miasta. Próba odpowiedzi na to pytanie zostanie udzielona w oparciu o wywiady z ekspertami społecznymi i instytucjonalnymi, jakie w ramach większego projektu badawczego prowadzone były we Wrocławiu i Gliwicach w latach 2014−2015.
More than twenty years ago Wacław Piotrowski noticed that the identity of the city is defined by its essential features. These features could derive from the different city’s contexts: history, architecture, social structures and system of the public space. In this context public space in the sociological analysis is understood in the wide perspective which include its history, present and past events which take place on it, ways of everyday and holiday social using and meanings which are communicated by the public space. Consequently public space co-create the city’s identity. This identity is obvious in some cities, but in the others, with complicated history and the process of production of space, cause some diversity of meaning. Such situation could be fascinating and cause the achievement of the competitive edge but on the other side sometimes could be barrier of the cities development. It shows that the problem of the role of public space in the creation of the city’s identity is important for the research. This article presents this problem according to in-depth interviews with institutional and social experts in Gliwice and Wrocław which were conducted as a part of the wider research project in 2014 and 2015.

Opis:
Social influence, a phenomenon studied by social psychology, contains a spatial aspect that exerts an important influence on both architecture and urban space. This article presents some of the areas and methods of social influence, as well as the associated features of human psychology and social phenomena, with some final remarks concerning manipulation and propaganda. This article include the presentation of methods that architecture and urban planning employ to influence people (both individuals and groups), such as the communication function of built structures, the identity and symbolism of space, and the phenomenon of unification. The research undertakes the problem of a large emotional potential of memorial and symbolic spaces, as well as the hierarchy of spaces and their atmosphere. Using the methods of identifying areas of influence described by social psychology, elements in architecture and urban planning susceptible to social influence have been noted.
Wpływ społeczny, będący fenomenem badanym przez psychologię społeczną, posiada swój aspekt przestrzenny, a zarazem w istotny sposób oddziałuje na kształt architektury i przestrzeni urbanistycznej. W pracy przedstawiono obszary i metody wywierania wpływu społecznego oraz związane z nimi cechy psychologii ludzkiej i społecznej, jak również fenomeny manipulacji i propagandy. Przedstawiono elementy architektury i urbanistyki mogące posłużyć do zmiany postaw jej użytkowników (zarówno jednostek, jak i grup społecznych), jak komunikacyjna funkcja struktur zbudowanych, tożsamość i symbolika przestrzeni czy fenomen unifikacji. W pracy poruszony został problem przestrzeni o znacznym ładunku symbolicznym i emocjonalnym, przestrzeni pamięci, jak również hierarchiczności przestrzeni, jej nastroju. Posługując się metodami identyfikacji obszarów wpływu, opisanymi przez psychologię społeczną, wskazano na zjawiska w architekturze i urbanistyce podatne na wywieranie wpływu społecznego.
