Opis:
The aim of the study was to estimate the ecotype diversity of Fagus sylvatica L. in the context of the genetic variation within the natural range of its distribution in Poland. The study covered 13 beech provenances from the selected seed stand. Additionally, 13 natural beech populations were subjected to analysis with special consideration taken of the diversity of this species in the forest complexes of the Bieszczady region. The high inter−population variation was proved by way of natural selection processes depending on site−climate conditions. The results point out to the need of selection of provenances to match the individual environmental conditions.

Iberian temperate forests are distributed along the boundary between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean biogeographical regions, and represent the south-western range edges of diverse European broadleaved deciduous tree species. Trees growing at the boundary between Atlantic and Mediterranean biomes suffer from different stresses, including increasing moisture deficit which has been identified as one of the main limitations for growth. In this work, dendrochronological techniques were employed to characterize the radial growth of Acer campestre L., Fagus sylvatica L., Fraxinus excelsior L., and Quercus robur L. in a mixed forest in northern Spain, and examine its relationships with local climate near their south-western range edges. Acer and Fagus tree-ring chronologies showed the highest common signal and the strongest responses to climate. Positive effects of precipitation, especially in the previous December and current summer, were relevant for growth of all species. Only Acer growth showed a detrimental effect of maximum diurnal temperatures in the previous autumn and current summer, while Fraxinus and Quercus growth was benefited by above-average winter temperatures. Cloud cover strongly improved the radial growth of all species, probably because cloudy conditions mitigate the detrimental effects of summer water depletion and low winter temperatures. The beneficial effects of precipitation and cloudiness on tree growth were temporally unstable and have become significant generally since the 1970s, suggesting that rising temperatures and decreasing rainfall shape radial growth-climate relationships of broadleaved deciduous trees near their southern range edges.

The study focused on tree rings of European beech in the stands in the Iława Forest District. The aim of the study was to analyse the effect of climatic conditions on the formation of the annual ring width at the limits of beech natural distribution in an area where the Atlantic and Continental climate meet and overlap. The mean tree−ring width was relatively wide and equalled 2,89 mm. The obtained time series covered the years between 1900 and 2002. On the basis of the response function analysis and indicator years it was demonstrated that there was a considerable impact of spring/summer precipitation on annual growth ring formation.

Opis:
The paper presents the inventory of place names (toponyms) connected to European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.). This tree species reaches its eastern distribution limit in Poland and covers around 5.9% of forest area in the country. Due to the fact that its occurrence depends mostly on climatic conditions it is present on the west, north and south, but not in the central and eastern part of Poland. The aim of this study was to compare, using geographic information system (GIS) tools, spatial distribution of toponyms derived from the core ‘buk’ (i.e. beech in Polish) with present occurrence of this tree known from botanical studies, and its natural limits described in the literature. Thanks to National Register of Geographical Names 1314 topographic objects names derived from beech were determined and classified into several groups of origin. Around 38% of phyto−toponyms are names of settlements or their parts. The results of spatial analysis of this objects show great similarity with present day distribution of this species in Poland. As much as 75% of them are located within the area presently covered with Fagus sylvatica (according to European Forest Genetic Resources Program) and around 92% within its range limit. Some regions where the density of phyto−toponyms is quite high and which nowadays are covered by other species than beech were also delimited (e.g. Dalkowskie Hills or Bytów Lakeland). This results suggest that European beech may be the natural representative of local dendroflora, but due to the changes in land cover it was replaced by other species. This hypothesis seems to be confirmed by palaeoecological studies. Huge similarity of distribution of toponyms derived from beech and distribution of this tree known from the literature shows that this method have a great potential as a reliable, simple and cheap proxy in studies on the spatial range of the species.

Fresh and stored beechnuts collected in 1992, 1995, 1998, 1999 and 2000 were tested for viability and in 1998, 1999 and 2000 also for germination. Germination parameters such as peakvalue, mean weekly germination (modified mean daily germination), germination capacity, and germination value (Czabator 1962) were calculated from the germination test data and these indicators were also used for comparing beechnut quality. The highest viability for pre-stored beechnuts occurred in 1998 (80%) and this increased by 4% when these seedlots were stored for 1.5 years. Viability of fresh beechnuts collected in 1992, 1995 and 1999 was 64, 73 and 77%, respectively. Viability of 1995-collected beechnuts decreased after 3 years storage. Germination of fresh seeds was only done for the 1998, 1999 and 2000 collections where the best germination occurred for the 1998 collection. Germination of beechnuts collected in 1992 and 1995 was significantly reduced after 3 and 6 years of storage, respectively, while beechnuts collected in 1998 and stored for 1.5 years germinated about 15% better than fresh seeds of the 1999 crop. The peakvalue, mean weekly germination and the time required for viable seeds to reach 80% germination showed that the 1998 crop had the highest, overall quality. Eighty percent of the viable seeds collected in 1998 germinated in 9-10 weeks while fresh beechnuts from 1999 needed nearly 13 weeks to germinate, as did beechnuts collected in 1992 and stored for 7 years. Besides the germination capacity the germination value seems to be the very good indicator for determining the quality of stored beechnuts.

Germination and viability of stored European beech (Fagus sylvatica) seeds can vary depending upon the time when the tests are done during seed storage. To determine the possible sources of such variation the germination (GERM), germination rate expressed as mean germination time (MGT) and viability (VIAB) of six beechnut lots (three lots from two crop years) were determined monthly for one year using controlled laboratory conditions and standard tests. Higher GERM of some lots occurred when tests for stored seeds were carried out in spring and early autumn while other lots germinated better during summer tests. Similarly, different germination speed (dormancy release) and VIAB were observed in different months for different lots. However, no consistent seasonal fluctuation in GERM, MGT or VIAB of the beechnuts was observed in the tests. The reason for this fluctuation seems to be initial quality (germination and dormancy) of beechnut lots rather than any endogenous factors

Opis:
The study presents plant interception understood as a process of retaining rainfall over the entire surface of the plant. The objective was to collect and prepare data presenting changes in the amount of rainwater reaching the forest floor, and to inference on the diversity of water capacity within canopy of a single tree. A characteristic feature of an interceptive tank is the lack of tightness, which provides the possibility for the determination of horizontal distribution of water that reaches the forest floor. The amount of throughfall depends on direct rainfall and humidity, while its spatial distribution depends on the structure and species composition, the shape of crowns, the degree of compaction of foliage in the crowns and the distance from the tree trunk. Increase in rainfall was reported at specified time points, which, in combination with the distribution of rain gauges in the square grid, provided spatio−temporal image describing changes of water capacity of the treetops. Single tree and biogroups influence the specific mosaic of soil properties that change even on a small scale. This kind of interaction is somewhat important for the stand regeneration. The studies were carried out in Węgierska Górka Forest District (southern Poland). Changes in the amount of rainwater reaching the forest floor after successive time points during 47 individual rainfall events were controlled. Spatio−temporal distribution of rainfall was related to the distance from the trunk, but primarily to the construction of the treetop. As a result, the graphic interpolation of spatial data describing the amount of water retained in the treetop after a single rainfall was provided. The distance from the trunk, the branch system and construction of the treetop significantly affected the amount of water reaching the forest floor. The morphology of the treetop and root system, as well as the characteristics of beech trunk are causes, and simultaneously, consequences of penetration of rainfall into the forest floor that is characteristic for this species. The increasing attention is paid to determine the spatial variability of studied phenomena, which is a kind of physical−mathematical model, which takes into account the local variation of the analyzed traits.

This paper presents the distribution of Pedicularis sylvatica, an endangered species across the whole Poland. In order to illustrate its dynamics four time periods were taken into consideration: before 1900, 1901-1950, 1951-1990 and after 1990. Until the present, 599 localities of P. sylvatica, have been known, half of which, i.e. 276 were recorded during intensive studies on wetland habitats in the years 1951-1990. Numerous localities – 195, were also recorded after 1990. In the 19th century 93 sites were documented and 91 in the first half of the 20th century. The analysis of the dynamics of P. sylvatica, shows that despite discovering new localities, primarily in the south of the country, the species exhibits recessive trends, on some areas, especially in the north.
Praca przedstawia rozmieszczenie w Polsce Pedicularis sylvatica, gatunku zagrożonego w skali kraju.

Modelling is one of the basic activities in the field of biological sciences. The main purpose of modelling is to illustrate relationships and phenomena of biological objects (and traits describing them) and present reality as close as it is possible with expected range of error. In the paper we presented results of approximation of the selected theoretical distributions, i.e. singular (normal, log−normal, gamma, two− and three−parameter Weibull, Johnsons SB) and finite mixture (normal, log−normal, gamma and Weibull) to tree diameter distributions in beech stands (Fagus sylvatica L.). The main aim of the study was to evaluate goodness of fit of selected distributions, prove legitimacy of using mixture distributions in even−aged, single−species beech stands and find the best distribution of model diameter distribution in a whole production cycle of this kind of stands. The study was conducted in 32 sample plots located in north−western Poland in stands at the age between 9 and 140. For the evaluation χ² test, a modified error index (e) and a root mean square error (RMSE) were used. We found that the RMSE and e are related in most cases with stand density. Mean values of used indicators show that finite mixture distributions are better in comparison to singular distributions. The best fitted distributions were Johnsons SB and mixture of gamma ones. Range of error index expressed with number of trees per hectare ranges 16.5−32.8% and 7.7−27.0% for this distributions, respectively. Conversely the worst results were obtained by fitting two−parameter Weibull distribution both in singular and mixture. Future diameter distribution model based on the probability distribution should be based on Johnson SB or 3−parameter Weibull distribution from singular ones or gamma from finite mixture. In case of age class apportionment unequivocal the best result were obtained with Johnson SB and partially with mixture gamma distributions.

Opis:
The article presents the results of inoculation of beech and oak stumps with a biological preparation of oyster fungus (Pleurotus ostreatus) mycelium. The inoculum was grown on a sawdust substrate at Warsaw University of Life Sciences Department of Mycology and Forest Phytopathology. The experiment was set up at the Forest Experimental Station in Rogów. Stumps were inoculated: i) immediately after tree felling or ii) at approximately 5 and 12 months after felling. A total of 60 beech stumps and 50 oak stumps were inoculated in the years 2002– 2004. The infected stumps were then inspected for the presence of the mycelium and fruiting bodies of P. ostreatus. The presence of fruiting bodies of other wood-decaying fungi was also noted. The extent of rotting was determined macroscopically, with the causal agent being confirmed on the basis of isolation and identification of mycelium from fragments of colonized wood obtained from rooted-out stumps. Oyster fungus mycelium was found to colonise beech stumps much more effectively than oak stumps. Stumps inoculated immediately after, or five months after felling were more effectively colonized by the mycelium than those inoculated after one year.
Zbadano możliwości wykorzystania boczniaka ostrygowatego (Pleurotus ostreatus) do szczepienia pniakow bukowych i dębowych w celu ograniczania bazy pokarmowej opieniek (Armillaria spp.). W sumie, w latach 2002– 2004, zaszczepiono 60 pniaków bukowych i 50 dębowych. Na zainfekowanych pniakach oceniano występowanie grzybni i owocników boczniaka ostrygowatego oraz obecność innych gatunków grzybów wielkoowocnikowych. Makroskopowo określano zasięg widocznej zgnilizny i potwierdzano sprawcę (Pleurotus ostreatus) poprzez izolację i identyfikację grzybni z fragmentów drewna wykarczowanych trzech pniaków bukowych i trzech dębowych.

Opis:
Genetic diversity is often considered a major determinant of long term population persistence and its potential to adapt to variable environmental conditions. The ability of populations to maintain their genetic diversity across generations seems to be a major prerequisite for their sustainability, which is particularly important for keystone forest tree species. However, little is known about genetic consequences of demographic alterations occurring during natural processes of ecological succession involving changes in the species composition. Using microsatellites, we investigated genetic diversity of adult and offspring generations in beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and oak (Quercus robur L.) populations coexisting in a naturally established old-growth forest stand, showing some symptoms of ongoing ecological succession from oak- to beech- dominated forest. In general, adult generations of both species exhibited high levels of genetic diversity (0.657 for beech; 0.821 for oak), which, however, depended on the sets of selected genetic markers. Nevertheless, several symptoms such as differences in genetic diversity indices between generations, significant levels of inbreeding (up to 0.029) and low estimates of effective population size (48–80) confirmed the declining status of the oak population. On the other hand, the uniform distribution of genetic diversity indices across generations, low levels of inbreeding (0.004), low genetic differentiation among adults and offspring and, most importantly, large estimates of effective population size (119–716), all supported beech as a successive and successful tree species in the studied forest stand.

Opis:
The study was based on the empirical material collected from 12 beech−pine stands located in the territory of the Miłomłyn (6 plots) and Stare Jabłonki (6 plots) forest districts. On the basis of the collected material, a height growth model was developed for the beech growing in the lower storey of pine stands. The developed functions can be used, inter alia, for the characterisation of top−height growth with stand age, development of a network of site indices, as well as in the studies on the height growth rate.

Opis:
The results of research into leaf stomatal variability of five European beech provenances originating from Austria, Bosnia and Hercegovina, Germany, Romania and Serbia are presented in this paper. Aim of the study was to investigate how stomatal traits of provenances originating from different environments change in response to drought stress and to assess the phenotypic plasticity of the stomatal features investigated. The study was conducted during two different years, characterized by contrasting weather conditions (2010 and 2011). Two-way ANOVA revealed that provenances differ significantly in terms of stomatal density (SD), width of stomatal aperture (Wb), potential conductance index (PCI) and relative stomatal pore surface (RSPS), during both seasons. In a dry year (2011) all provenances significantly increased stomatal density by between 16.1% (Hasbruch – DE) and 21.9% (Cer – SRB). Guard cell length (LA) was not statistically different among provenances in either year (2010 and 2011), even though LA decreased in the dry year (2011) in all provenances. Reaction norms were steep in most of the parameters suggesting the possibility of a plastic response of provenances toward changes in soil water regime, influenced by the prevailing weather each year. Phenotypic plasticity indices were the highest in regards of SD, PCI and RSPS, indicating that these traits would be good candidates for improvement in breeding programs aimed at selection of drought resistant.
