Opis:
Swelling clay minerals, which are innately capable of dispersing into thin flakes in water, can significantly depress coal flotation. Some researchers partially attribute depression to pulp viscosity increments. This study sought to understand the role of swelling clay minerals in fine coal flotation, by investigating the rheological behavior of bentonite suspensions under controlled and uncontrolled dispersion conditions. The effect of collector, frother, and solution pH on rheological properties of the pulp was studied. Findings showed that at a natural pH, Newtonian flow properties were displayed when bentonite was directly added into a swelling suppressed solution containing calcium ions. The same process was repeated under uncontrolled conditions, and the suspensions transferred from Newtonian to non-Newtonian flows with pseudo-plastic characteristics, depending on the solid density. Further, pH value, methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) and kerosene had the potential to alter the rheological behavior of controlled and uncontrolled systems, especially pH value in the uncontrolled system.

Opis:
The influence of bentonite dispersion on fine coal flotation was examined to better understand the role of swelling clay in the process of flotation. It was found that the coal flotation recovery was lower with uncontrolled dispersion of bentonite than with controlled dispersion. The detrimental effect was attributed to the increase in slime coating. In the uncontrolled dispersion, the dispersed bentonite platelets formed an extensive card-house structure. The three-dimensional networks increased the slurry viscosity, and caused significant coating of the coal particles, thereby inhibiting particle mobility and bubble-particle attachment. In the controlled dispersion, the bentonite mineral appeared as separate particles with low aspect ratios. The coal particles were partially coated, and the slurry viscosity was lower, resulting in higher flotation recovery. The findings in this study suggested that a practical solution to mitigate the negative impact of swelling clay on flotation would be to maintain high electrolyte levels in the wash water to inhibit clay swelling and dispersion.

Opis:
One of the challenges of any laboratory dealing with drilling fluids is to develop a mud that is also environmentally friendly and, on the other hand, inhibits the clay layers to a maximum. The article presents the influence of water on various samples of clay rocks characterized by different geological age. The research was carried out using the Linear Swelling Meter. The geological age, the environment in which the clay rock was formed, the depth of burial – all these factors affect the swelling properties of individual clay rocks. Knowledge of the swelling properties of clay rocks allows the proper selection of drilling fluid system.

Tertiary clays and tills, the most widespread soils in Poland, were used for the examination of swelling, expansion and shrinkage properties. Results of laboratory tests and the values of selected parameters obtained by indirect methods show that the Tertiary clays examined, when compared with Quaternary tills, show greater volumetric changes under the influence of water, which is primarily connected with their higher silt content.

Opis:
Buried pipelines are a vital infrastructure and are mainly used to transport energy carriers and other essential products. The pipes are generally buried in the upper layer of soil deposits and, therefore, are highly affected by different geo-environmental conditions. The various pathological cases recorded in the world are caused by the degradation of structures in contact with swelling soils, the fact that necessitates a full understanding and investigation of such a phenomenon. This paper presents a method for the pipeline behavior modeling based on the finite element analysis by using PLAXIS 3D software, aimed at the determination of the pipe bending moment, displacement over its length, and the evaluation of vertical stresses in soil under the pipe. A parametric study has been carried out to investigate the effect of the pipe burial depth and the soil cohesion. The finite-element results have been compared with experimental data from the literature. It was found that, unlike laboratory models, the numerical analysis can account for the internal pressure in the pipe and the depth of the pipe burial. The finite-element analysis showed that the presence of fluid pressure inside the pipe results in a decrease in the maximum swelling of the soil by about 95%. The displacement of the pipe is considerably affected by the burial depth. The vertical stress at one end of the pipe can be greater than that at the other end in the case of a pipe under internal pressure, while in the case of an empty pipe, the values are very close at both ends. The numerical analysis shows that an increase in the pipe internal pressure leads to a decrease in its vertical displacement.

Opis:
Smectite clays, due to their barrier properties and swelling ability, are often applied for waterproofing purposes. A proper value of swelling pressure is one of the parameters, which must be met by the fillers used in hybrid waterproofing materials. The authors determined the swelling pressure of selected clay raw materials in their natural state and after chemical modification. This parameter was measured by the Komine method, as this procedure is more accurate than the standard edometric method. The authors introduced some changes in the method. The samples represent Krakowiec clays (Miocene) and a Triassic clay, collected in active pits of building clays, which are widely exploited in south Poland. The content of the smectite group minerals, determined from the sorption of methylene blue and copper(II) triethylenetetramine, ranges between 15 and 35%. Further characteristics of the clays were obtained with X-ray diffraction, chemical analyses (calcium carbonate content including) and pH measurements. It has been found that the activation of smectite clays with sodium lowers their swelling pressure as water penetrates easier the interlayer spaces of the smectites modified. This is important from the viewpoint of assessing the quality of bentonite fillers.

The ability to effectively use mineral resources is the key to the sustainable development of industry in modern conditions of environmental protection. High-quality bentonites are rarely found in nature, so technologies for improving the quality of clay powders are quite relevant today. The article considers the possibility of improving the quality of clays obtained from candidate quarries for the purpose of further use as components of drilling fluids. The filtration and rheological characteristics of drilling fluids obtained on the basis of activated clay powder were also investigated by Benta Limited Liability Company.
