Opis:: Aim: This paper assesses theoretically and empirically three key factors for sustainable development within context of debates about economy and environment: autonomous technological change, induced technological change and barriers of entry to innovations. Design/research methods: The paper covers a literature review on strong versus weak sustainability, followed by an explanation of autonomous technological change. Statistical analysis with literature review on induced technological change due to consumers’ and policy demands for sustainable innovations, as well as literature review on policy support for the incumbent interests that rival sustainable innovations is provided. The information used is largely based on two chapters in the book on sustainable innovations (Krozer 2015), and presented in the context of long scientific cooperation with the late Andries Nentjes. Conclusion/findings: The economic theoretical debates are hardly relevant for policies on sustainable innovations, because political views are inconsistent with observations and change during fluctuations in economic outcomes. The main conclusion is that autonomous technological change is the driver of sustainable innovations. Present policies pose barriers of entry to sustainable innovations, where the global value of support for vested interest exceeds the market potential for induced technological change due to demands of policies and consumers put together. Originality/value of the paper: The study contribution to understanding of autonomous and induced technological change, showing that shifting policy support away from the incumbent interests towards sustainable innovations is key for sustainable development.

Opis:: The article aims to analyse the state of art in the field of sustainable innovation in Poland and identify barriers to developing this type of innovations. The article describes the main barriers in the implementation of sustainable innovations and related problematic issues. Eco-innovation may help European entrepreneurs develop sustainable solutions, allowing better use of valuable resources and reducing the economy’s negative impact on the environment. Awareness of the benefits brought by environmental technologies is still low. Implementing environmental innovation requires a strategic approach, and introducing them to the company’s existing structures is difficult and time-consuming. Contemporary challenges, such as climate change and the depletion of natural resources, require new solutions. Modern economies are based on intangible assets protected by intellectual property rights, intellectual property management is now an integral part of any effective business strategy.
Celem artykułu jest analiza stanu wiedzy w zakresie zrównoważonych innowacji w Polsce oraz identyfikacja barier dla ich rozwoju. W artykule opisano główne bariery w zakresie wdraża-nia zrównoważonych innowacji oraz związane z tym zagadnienia problematyczne. Ekoinnowacje mogą ułatwić europejskim przedsiębiorcom opracowywanie zrównoważonych rozwiązań, umożliwiających lepsze wykorzystanie cennych zasobów i zmniejszenie negatywnego wpływu gospodarki na środowisko. Świadomość korzyści, jakie przynoszą technologie środowiskowe, jest nadal niska. Wdrażanie innowacji środowiskowych wymaga strategicznego podejścia, a wprowadzenie ich do istniejących struktur przed-siębiorstwa jest trudne i czasochłonne. Współczesne wyzwania, takie jak zmiany klimatyczne i wyczerpy-wanie się zasobów naturalnych, wymagają nowych rozwiązań. Nowoczesne gospodarki opierają się na wartościach niematerialnych chronionych prawami własności intelektualnej, a zarządzanie własnością intelektualną jest obecnie integralną częścią każdej skutecznej strategii biznesowej.

Opis:: Until recently the textile and clothing industry has been developed based on technological and cost factors. As a result, manufacturers have generally implemented research/technology- driven and price-driven innovations rather than user/consumer-driven innovations. The aim of this article is to start a discussion about the ways to increase the role of consumers' inputs into textile and clothing innovations, including so-called 'sustainable innovations'. The article presents the results of research that the author carried out using a representative random sample of 981 Polish adults. The research aimed: to establish the degree of consistency between types of innovations currently prioritized by the textile and clothing industry and the present needs of Polish consumers; to create a hierarchy of innovations that R&D centres may offer with respect to those needs; to analyse the survey respondents in terms of their socio-demographic characteristics in order to describe consumers interested in particular types of innovations according to the accepted criteria.
Celem artykułu jest rozpoczęcie dyskusji na temat możliwości zwiększenia roli konsumenta w procesie tworzenia innowacji, w tym tzw., innowacji zrównoważonych na rynku tekstylno-odzieżowym. W artykule omówiono ewolucję podejścia do tworzenia innowacji oraz możliwości uwzględnienia najnowszych trendów w kreowaniu innowacji przez firmy tekstylno-odzieżowe. Ponadto przedstawiono wyniki badań przeprowadzonych w okresie od 30 listopada do 8 grudnia 2010 roku na reprezentatywnej próbie 981 dorosłych Polaków. Głównym celem badań było poznanie opinii polskich konsumentów dotyczącej ich potrzeb w zakresie innowacyjnych produktów tekstylno-odzieżowych ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem innowacji w zakresie humanoekologii, komfortu użytkowania, ekologii, etyki oraz indywidualizacji, a w szczególności: ocenę czy kierunki poszukiwania innowacji odpowiadają bieżącym potrzebom konsumentów polskich; hierarchizację potencjalnych innowacji oferowanych przez ośrodki - badawczo-naukowe pod kątem wspomnianych potrzeb; analizę socjologiczno-demograficzną badanych.

Opis:: The topic dealt with in the paper is very timely and has assumed major importance from the viewpoint of development of research into economies based on sustainable development and application of research findings in specific solutions in the economy. The paper postulates that innovation is a fundamental and necessary instrument for implementing sustainable development throughout the whole economy. In order to confirm the thesis, first the paper attempts to identify the role of innovation in various areas of the economy. Secondly, it identifies the sources of innovation and areas of the economy which most require new innovative solutions. The study is based on literature, both domestic and foreign. The author analyses theoretical and empirical publications available on the market. Older publications turned out to be necessary and helpful in describing the evolution of the approach to sustainable development of the economy from a historical point of view. Newer works provide a basis for the compilation of a vast majority of the paper. The paper is a preliminary step in a more detailed research into various aspects of an economy based on sustainable development.

Opis:: The main purpose of the article analyses the stability of sustainable development of the enterprise and determines the approaches to the interpretation of this concept. In modern conditions, the relevance of this article is that the concept of sustainable development is becoming increasingly popular because it can ensure economic growth and increase the competitiveness of the enterprise. Opis:: Actions that are environmentally friendly are increasingly being undertaken by private organizations, the public entities and the community. This process strives to meet the needs of society and to maintain balance between the natural environment and the economic activity. One of the solutions is sustainable building for energy efficient buildings, waste recycling and water saving and in addition, the use of renewable energy, regional materials and raw materials, recycled and environmentally friendly, as well as the promotion of bicycles and public transport. The process of making a dialogue between the local authority and residents is supported by spatial information acquisition and processing technologies and Internet communication tools The aim of the article is to analyze the resource-efficient and effective projects implemented in the city and to indicate the benefits for the economy. These benefits are to be achieved through green innovations that combine innovation with environmental sensitivity and ecological awareness.

Opis:: Zagadnienie innowacyjności oraz zrównoważonego rozwoju jest ważnym i aktualnym problemem badawczym. Odnosi się to również do określenia uwarunkowań rozwoju przedsiębiorstwa zrównoważonego oraz znaczenia rodzajów innowacji w tym procesie ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem nowych form innowacji, tj. innowacji: otwartych, społecznych i ekologicznych. Przedsiębiorstwo zrównoważone to przedsiębiorstwo, które realizuje cele zrównoważonego rozwoju i dąży do równowagi w każdym swoim podsystemie i w relacjach z otoczeniem. To przedsiębiorstwo zdolne do formułowania celów w kontekście zrównoważonego rozwoju i zdolne do ich realizacji w ramach posiadanych zasobów w konkurencyjnym otoczeniu. Omawiana problematyka należy do kwestii złożonych i nadal niewystarczająco zbadanych. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest określenie nowych form innowacji w kontekście ich znaczenia w dążeniu przedsiębiorstwa do zrównoważonego rozwoju. Wykorzystano analizę literatury przedmiotu oraz wyniki badań wtórnych.
The issue of innovation and sustainable development is an important and topical research problem. It refers to defining the conditions for the development of a sustainable enterprise and the importance of the types of innovations involved in this process, with a particular emphasis on the new forms of innovation, such as open innovations, social innovations and ecological innovations. A sustainable enterprise is one that pursues the goals of sustainable development. It strives for balance in each of its subsystems and its relations with the environment. It is an enterprise that is capable of setting goals within the context of sustainable development and achieving them using its available resources in a competitive environment. The issue under discussion falls within the category of complex and still insufficiently researched areas. The purpose of this study is to identify new forms of innovation and assess their impact on an organization’s path toward sustainable development. The study is based on a comprehensive review of relevant literature and selected findings from secondary research.

The present article constitutes an attempt to describe the subject of sustainable enterprise with reference to innovation management. The aim of the paper is to focus on a modern enterprise "of tomorrow", based on managing innovative, which has recently become a frequently applied and effective management model. The article contains a description of what sustainable enterprise is; sustainable enterprise models have been elaborated on, too. Further consideration focuses on one of many models applied within the enterprise "of tomorrow," mainly innovation management.

Opis:: The paper aim is to increase knowledge concerning formation of eco-clusters regarding their origin and transformation process. Since eco-innovation is emerging as an industry, it should attract attention of decisionmakers of different levels. Author presents the complexity of eco-clusters development and the consequences for its governance. The paper shows what is the role of different stakeholders in this process. The author aim is to recognize the current links between cluster policy directed to sustainability and eco-innovation. Clustering may have significant implication on development of a city or a whole region. From the perspective of regional or city development, eco clusters can play important role in development strategies. Countries, regions and cities search how to improve competitive conditions and attract firms and other stakeholders to their locations prepared for cluster initiatives. Author analyzes policy and support instruments for eco-clusters used in the European Union and in Poland. The paper reviews main theoretical framework, empirical findings and statistical data on clusters in Europe.

Opis:: Rozwój gospodarczy nawet w gospodarce opartej na wiedzy i innowacyjności odbywa się kosztem środowiska przyrodniczego i jego walorów. Stąd konieczne są działania zmierzające do ograniczania jego degradacji. Działania takie są podejmowane poprzez wdrażanie założeń rozwoju zrównoważonego do praktyki gospodarczej, ale również mogą być elementem strategii innowacyjnej państwa czy też przedsiębiorstwa. Innowacje pełnią więc ważne funkcje nie tylko o charakterze ekonomicznym i techniczno-produkcyjnym, ale także społecznym i ekologicznym. Pomiędzy polityką ochrony środowiska i rozwoju zrównoważonego (ekorozwoju) a polityką innowacyjną i rozwoju gospodarczego nie ma sprzeczności. Przeciwnie, przestrzeganie standardów ekologicznych oraz respektowanie zasad rozwoju zrównoważonego może być bodźcem do modernizacji gospodarki i przedsiębiorstw. Sprzyja to innowacyjności, zmuszając do poszukiwania nowych, efektywniejszych rozwiązań wytwórczych, co z kolei podnosi konkurencyjność między przedsiębiorstwami zarówno na rynkach krajowych, jak i zagranicznych. Oznacza to, że potrzeba ochrony środowiska i założenia rozwoju zrównoważonego są nośnikiem postępu technicznego i innowacyjności. Choć innowacje, a zwłaszcza ekoinnowacje, są ważną determinantą rozwoju gospodarki efektywniej korzystającej z zasobów naturalnych, bardziej przyjaznej środowisku i bardziej konkurencyjnej, to ich wprowadzanie do praktyki gospodarczej jest przedsięwzięciem trudnym, wymagającym rozwiązań systemowych, odpowiedniej polityki i właściwych bodźców. W naszym kraju subsydiowanie podmiotów wdrażających innowacje dotychczas miało charakter ograniczony i opierało się przede wszystkim na funduszach strukturalnych z UE. W przyszłości udział bezzwrotnej pomocy ze środków publicznych w finansowaniu innowacji będzie się zmniejszał na rzecz dofinansowania o charakterze zwrotnym z funduszy inwestycyjnych.
Economic development even in an economy based on knowledge and innovation, functions at the expense of the natural environment and its qualities. Therefore, action is needed to reduce and even prevent the formation of negative externalities associated with economic changes. Such activities are undertaken in the process of implementing the concept of sustainable development, but also can be part of the innovation strategy of the state or a company. Innovations therefore serve important functions not only of economic and technical production character, but also social and environmental. Between environmental policy and sustainable development (eco-development) and innovation policy and economic development, there is no contradiction. On the contrary, compliance with environmental standards and respect for the principles of sustainable development can be a stimulus to the modernization of the economy and businesses. This promotes innovation, forcing them to seek new and more effective solutions to manufacturing, which in turn increases the competition between firms in both domestic and foreign markets. This means that the need to protect the environment and assumptions of the concept of sustainable development are carriers of technological progress and innovation. Although innovations, particularly eco-innovations are an important determinant of economic growth effectively using natural resources, greener and more competitive, their introduction to business practice is difficult, demanding system solutions, appropriate policies and appropriate incentives, especially financial ones. In our country, subsidizing entities implementing innovations so far has been of a limited character and based primarily on EU funds. In the future, the share of non-repayable assistance from public funds in the financing of innovation will be reduced in favor of a grant of a return of investment funds character.

Jest także ważnym narzędziem wsparcia sektora małych i średnich przedsiębiorstw oraz innowacyjności. Polityka klastrowa Unii Europejskiej wzmocniła pozycję klastrów na gospodarczej mapie Wspólnoty. Obserwowany jest systematyczny wzrost inicjatyw klastrowych w krajach członkowskich UE. Artykuł ma na celu prezentację i ocenę kluczowych uwarunkowań polityki wsparcia klastrów ekologicznych w Unii Europejskiej oraz w Polsce.
Along with civilization trends and rising environmental awareness ecoclusters reach an important role on the world map of cluster initiatives. The European Union has adopted a cluster-based policy. As a result, the number of cluster initiatives has steadily been increasing in the EU over the past decade. Also many member countries introduce eco-cluster policy and undertake the organized efforts to improve growth and competitiveness of the eco-initiatives. Eco-business is expected to continue to be a steadily growing market. Governments, especially at a regional and local level, are indicated as essential supporters of the cluster organization. It means that for the best outcomes eco-cluster policy should be tailored in cities or regions where it can best address the eco-innovative needs of a specific industry. Poland as the EU member state should integrate cluster policy into its national reforms. It means strict links and coordination of the overall industrial, innovation, regional, SMEs, and environmental policies. Poland is currently at an early stage of cluster policy adoption.

Opis:: Sustainable consumption is a term related to the type of consumer behavior being a part of the broader concept of sustainable development. In the process of selecting the method of satisfying their needs, consumers take into account a number of factors which minimize the negative influence of their buying decisions on the natural environment and the society. The goal of the article is to identify consumers aiming at sustainable consumption and to explain the way in which companies respond to these consumers’ needs by means of innovations – particularly that of the marketing and organizational nature. The study focuses on retail companies for a few reasons. First of all, companies of this type have the following characteristics: proximity to consumers, cooperation with producers in creating their offer, as well as shaping sales channels and developing a variety of time and space solutions facilitating the efficient need satisfaction. What is more, they are also leaders in innovation – these are the retail companies that adopted a number of innovations during the economic transformation period. In the last part of the article the companies’ objectives are confronted with the consumers’ aims, as well as barriers to development and factors conducive to sustainable consumption are discussed.
Zrównoważona konsumpcja to termin określający pewien rodzaj zachowań konsumenckich, wynikający z szerszej koncepcji – zrównoważonego rozwoju. Konsumenci, wybierając sposób zaspokojenia potrzeby, biorą zarazem pod uwagę szereg czynników, które zapewniają minimalizowanie negatywnych dla środowiska naturalnego i społeczeństwa skutków własnych decyzji zakupowych. W artykule dokonano charakterystyki i identyfikacji konsumentów dążących do zrównoważonej konsumpcji. Ponadto wyjaśniono, w jaki sposób przedsiębiorstwa odpowiadają na potrzeby tych nabywców innowacjami – w szczególności marketingowymi i organizacyjnymi. W opracowaniu skupiono się na przedsiębiorstwach handlowych z kilku powodów. Przede wszystkim przedsiębiorstwa handlowe wyróżniają takie cechy, jak: bliskość względem konsumentów, współtworzenie oferty z producentami, a także kształtowanie kanałów sprzedaży i tworzenie szeregu udogodnień czasowych i przestrzennych umożliwiających sprawne zaspokajanie potrzeb. Są one także wiodącymi podmiotami pod względem innowacji – to właśnie przedsiębiorstwa handlowe najszybciej zaadoptowały szereg innowacji w okresie transformacji gospodarki. W ostatniej części skonfrontowano dążenia przedsiębiorstw z celami konsumentów i wskazano na bariery rozwoju i czynniki sprzyjające zrównoważonej konsumpcji.

Opis:: Świat nieustannie rozwija się, wprowadzane są coraz nowsze technologie usprawniające życie. Jedną z nich był samochód, który do dziś obecny jest w przestrzeni miejskiej. Kierowca stał się dominującym użytkownikiem ruchu. Wnętrza urbanistyczne przytłoczone są obecnymi wszędzie miejscami parkingowymi, bez których nie funkcjonowałoby miasto, muszące przyjąć stale rosnącą liczbę pojazdów. Zwrócenie uwagi w kierunku zdrowego, ekologicznego środowiska, wolnego od zanieczyszczeń i hałasu sprawia, że warto zastanowić się, czy istnieje alternatywa dla samochodu w przestrzeni miejskiej? Jakie zmiany niesie ze sobą idea zrównoważonego transportu w mieście wolnym od prywatnych pojazdów osobowych? Problematyka omówiona została na podstawie trzech znaczących przykładów: Oslo, San Francisco, a także miasta Masdar City.
World is constantly developing, and new technologies that improve our life are being introduced. One of them was a car which is still present in urban spaces. The driver became the dominant traffic user. Urban interiors are overwhelmed by parking spaces which are present everywhere around. Without them the city could not function, having to adopt constantly increasing number of vehicles. Paying attention to a healthy, clean environment, free from pollution and noise, makes it worth considering whether there is an alternative to the car in urban space? What changes brings the idea of sustainable transport in a city free of private vehicles? Problematic aspects were discussed on the basis of three significant examples: Oslo, San Francisco, as well as Masdar City.

Opis:: Management in accordance with the principle of sustainable development is one of the basic aspects of environmental protection, and is nevertheless important in macroeconomic management (eco-innovations in national regulations) as well as in micro-regulations (municipal regulations). The municipalities authorities are obliged to preventing the negative effects of environmental degradation, preventing pollution, providing information on the state of the environment, cover the environmental policy, in order to ensure the land advancement in accordance with the principles of sustainable development. The implemented projects should mainly improve the living conditions of the inhabitants. That is why eco-innovative activities introduced in individual, small territorial areas (municipalities) are becoming more and more important. The paper is based on a case study as a recognized method of analyzing and discussing authentic situations used in management sciences.
