Sustainable development (SD) awareness continues to rise within the general public and is being extensively incorporated within academia, institutions, and business. As it is impossible to reach the needed level of awareness without adequate education, cooperative education partnerships should be established. The paper reveals the survey results and outcomes concerning the need for developing and implementing an industrial (Forest-related Industry) Master in Business Administration (MBA) program at the Ukrainian National Forestry University. The content of such a proposed program was also discussed. It was found that by developing and communicating the understanding about the connections between sustainability and business, companies can enhance their value, measure and manage change, and drive improvement and innovation. Considering the increasing demand for MBA programs it is crucial to implement sustainable development aspects into each proposed course. A hypothesis was made that sustainable development aspects are important both for the MBA program and for the industry. The paper concludes with a proposal of possible partnership and benefits for both academia and the forestrelated industry in Ukraine.

The concept of corporate sustainability development requires an integrated approach to the environmental, social and economic aspects of enterprise activities, but so far, there has been a lack of research on the situation of enterprises of Baltic countries, listed on the stock exchange. This study aims to identify how integral factors, showing corporate sustainability, are reflected in the reports of Nasdaq-listed enterprises that participate in the UN Global Compact. Employing the content analysis method, the publicly available information of 12 companies, 6 of which are listed on a stock exchange, is compared. The research results show that the reports of enterprises listed on the stock exchange correspond to the principles of UNGC more comprehensively, but, despite the publicly declared social and human rights policy, significant shortcomings in the areas of abolition of forced labour and child labour, the freedom of association and human rights have been identified and compared with unlisted enterprises. It is concluded that stock exchange listing may have a greater impact on corporate transparency, but the UNGC principles are a valuable tool for evaluating the consistency of enterprises in their commitment to sustainable business development.
Koncepcja zrównoważonego rozwoju przedsiębiorstw wymaga zintegrowanego podejścia do środowiskowych, społecznych i ekonomicznych aspektów działalności przedsiębiorstw, ale do tej pory brak jest badań dotyczących sytuacji przedsiębiorstw z krajów bałtyckich notowanych na giełdzie. Niniejsze badanie ma na celu określenie, w jaki sposób czynniki integrukące, pokazujące zrównoważony rozwój przedsiębiorstw, znajdują odzwierciedlenie w raportach przedsiębiorstw notowanych na giełdzie Nasdaq, które uczestniczą w Global Compact ONZ. Stosując metodę analizy treści, publicznie dostępnych informacji 12 firm, z których 6 jest notowanych na giełdzie, dokonuje sie porównania. Wyniki badań pokazują, że raporty przedsiębiorstw notowanych na giełdzie są bardziej kompleksowe zgodne z zasadami UNGC, ale pomimo publicznie ogłoszonej polityki społecznej i praw człowieka znaczące niedociągnięcia w zakresie zniesienia pracy przymusowej i pracy dzieci, określono wolność zrzeszania się i prawa człowieka oraz w porównaniu z przedsiębiorstwami nienotowanymi na giełdzie Stwierdzono, że notowania giełdowe mogą mieć większy wpływ na przejrzystość przedsiębiorstw, ale zasady UNGC są cennym narzędziem do oceny spójności przedsiębiorstw w ich zaangażowaniu w zrównoważony rozwój biznesu.

Actions that are environmentally friendly are increasingly being undertaken by private organizations, the public entities and the community. This process strives to meet the needs of society and to maintain balance between the natural environment and the economic activity. One of the solutions is sustainable building for energy efficient buildings, waste recycling and water saving and in addition, the use of renewable energy, regional materials and raw materials, recycled and environmentally friendly, as well as the promotion of bicycles and public transport. The process of making a dialogue between the local authority and residents is supported by spatial information acquisition and processing technologies and Internet communication tools The aim of the article is to analyze the resource-efficient and effective projects implemented in the city and to indicate the benefits for the economy. These benefits are to be achieved through green innovations that combine innovation with environmental sensitivity and ecological awareness.

Rozwój działalności gospodarczej w gminach z obszarami Natura 2000 natrafia na wiele barier. Istnieje opinia, że objęcie ochroną wartości przyrodniczych wyklucza lokalny rozwój gospodarczy lub wyraźnie go ogranicza. Ograniczenie to może mieć charakter ilościowy (osłabienie tempa rozwoju), jak i jakościowy (redukcja możliwych ścieżek rozwoju). Tymczasem, często nie dostrzega się nowych możliwości, które mogą być – pod pewnymi warunkami – wykorzystane w celu rozwijania działalności gospodarczej. Aby jednak tak się stało, konieczne jest przekroczenie barier kompetencyjnych, blokujących skuteczne planowanie i wspomaganie procesów rozwoju lokalnego. Istotnym wsparciem mogą być metody długookresowego i kompleksowego planowania, zawierające modele rozwoju łączącego wartości przyrodnicze z ekonomicznymi. Celem niniejszej pracy jest przedstawienie metodologii tworzenia modeli rozwoju gospodarczego w gminach z obszarami Natura 2000 oraz przykładowego modelu, opracowanego dla sekcji A Polskiej Klasyfikacji Działalności – rolnictwo, leśnictwo, łowiectwo, rybactwo.
Economic activity in the municipalities with Natura 2000 areas encounters a number of barriers. In many cases, it is claimed, that the presence of Natura 2000 sites restricts local economic development. This limitation can be quantitative (weakening momentum of development) as well as qualitative (reduction of possible pathways). Meanwhile, in many cases, local stakeholders do not see new opportunities, that can be – under certain conditions – used by the economy. However, in order for this to happen it is necessary to exceed the terms of barriers blocking effective planning and support processes of local development. An important contribution can be in this respect, the methods of long-term and comprehensive planning, including the development of models linking the natural values with economic growth. The purpose of this article is to present a methodology for creation of models of economic development in the municipalities with Natura 2000 areas. Furthermore, we would like to provide a sample model developed for section A of the Polish Classification of Activities (PKD) – agriculture, forestry, hunting, fisheries.

Aim: In this epilogue to the special issue, the author provides a reflection on the commonalities between the origins of business ethics and corporate sustainability on the one hand, and Higher Education for Sustainable Development on the other hand. Design / Research methods: The paper is reflective and provides future avenues to further develop the fields of business ethics, corporate sustainability, and Higher Education for Sustainable Development. Conclusions / findings: Although both fields developed independently, they share the same focus on interdisciplinary studies, integrated thinking, and looking beyond the short term and local interests. Originality / value of the article: In the end, both disciplines are carried by a fundamental normative choice for an inclusive, sustainable society, a choice that should never be forgotten and is the horizon of all our research.

W artykule postawiono tezę na temat możliwości wykorzystania filozofii zrównoważonego rozwoju w etyce biznesu. W części pierwszej scharakteryzowano etykę biznesu i filozofię zrównoważonego rozwoju jako subdyscypliny filozofii praktycznej. Filozofię zrównoważonego rozwoju zrekonstruowano na podstawie Raportu Brundtland. W części drugiej opisano interpretację problemu odpowiedzialności w filozofii zrównoważonego rozwoju i ukazano przydatność tej interpretacji w etyce biznesu.
The aim of this article is to substantiate the thesis concerning possibilities of using the sustainable development philosophy in business ethics. In the first part, business ethics and the sustainable development were characterized as subdisciplines of practical philosophy. The philosophy of the sustainable development was reconstructed on the basis of Brundtland Report. The business ethics was discussed in the aspects of structure, the level of discourse and cultural functions. In the second part, the interpretation of the problem of responsibility in the sustainable development was elaborated and the usefulness of this interpretation in business ethics was presented.

Pandemia COVID-19 wywołała bezprecedensowe konsekwencje – począwszy od służby zdrowia, poprzez gospodarkę, aż do życia społeczeństw. Jej wielowymiarowy negatywny wpływ sprawił, że zdaniem wielu ekspertów pod znakiem zapytania stanęła realizacja Celów Zrównoważonego Rozwoju ONZ (SDGs). Panuje jednak coraz powszechniejsze przekonanie, że obecny kryzys to doskonała okazja, by projektując popandemiczną rzeczywistość, nie powielać błędów wcześniejszego modelu rozwoju. Kluczową rolę w tym zakresie powinien odegrać biznes, który ma do swojej dyspozycji różnorodne koncepcje, pokazujące jak odpowiedzialnie działać na rzecz otoczenia i budować zrównoważoną gospodarkę. Jedną z takich koncepcji jest ruch B Corporation. Celem artykułu jest próba odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy ruch B Corp przyczynia się do realizacji SDGs, szczególnie dotkniętych negatywnym wpływem pandemii, zarówno z punktu widzenia teorii (ocena założeń ruchu), jak i empirii (analiza wybranych polskich przykładów firm z certyfikatem B Corp). Tak postawionemu celowi podporządkowane zostały metody badawcze – krytyczna analiza literatury przedmiotu oraz studia przypadku. Przeprowadzone analizy pozwoliły stwierdzić, że założenia ruchu B Corp są zgodne z ideą zrównoważonego rozwoju, a B Corps w Polsce przyczyniają się do wdrażania tych SDGs, które są szczególnie ważne w dobie pandemii.
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to grave and unforeseen consequences, whether in healthcare, economies, or in the lives of societies. Its multidimensional adverse impact has, according to many experts, put the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at risk. Nevertheless, there is a deeply held conviction that the current crisis is creating an excellent opportunity, while designing a post-pandemic reality, of avoiding the pitfalls of the previous development model. The private sector has a key role to play as it is in a position to apply various concepts of how to act responsibly and build a sustainable economy. One of such concepts is the Benefit Corporation movement. The article seeks answers to the question of whether the B Corp idea is contributing to realization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those affected by the pandemic. The author offers both a theoretical (assessment of the movement and its foundations) and empirical view (analysis of chosen Polish B Corp-certified companies). This goal is to be achieved by employed research methods: a critical analysis of the literature on the subject and case studies. The author’s analyses reveal that the foundations of the B Corp movement are aligned with the sustainable development concept, and that Poland-based B Corps are contributing to the implementation of those SDGs that are particularly relevant in the time of the pandemic.
