Companies are increasingly implementing sustainable solutions as they face a growing sustainability demands from different stakeholders. The question is whether car manufacturers adhered to sustainable production principles and at what level they are doing it in practice. The Lowell Center for Sustainable Production (LCSP) is used as a model to analyse the main aspects of sustainable production and assess the companies in the automotive sector in European Union. The data was collected from the Corporate Social Responsibility/ Sustainability reports of the individual car manufacturers found in the online data base of Global Reporting Initiative. Empirical evidence shows the adherence of these companies to the LCSP sustainable production principles. All the studied companies seem to be conscious of the significance of sustainability for the automotive industry. Although most of the sustainable production practices are focused on the environmental dimension of sustainability, employee and social aspects are not ignored in the reports.

W opracowaniu podjęto próbę wyznaczenia i oceny relatywnych różnic w efektywności ekonomicznej (mierzonej produktywnością zasobów i efektywnością techniczną w cenach bieżących) oraz zrównoważenia środowiskowego produkcji w gospodarstwach indywidualnych z obszaru intensywnego rolnictwa w Wielkopolsce (powiat gostyński) według ich typów. Badania sugerują najwyższy stopień efektywności technicznej i zrównoważenia środowiskowego gospodarstw wyspecjalizowanych w chowie bydła przy najniższych wskaźnikach produktywności zasobów. Odwrotne zależności zaobserwowano w gospodarstwach wyspecjalizowanych w produkcji żywca wieprzowego.
The study is an attempt to determine and assess the relative differences in economic performance (measured by the productivity of resources and technical efficiency) and environmental sustainability of production farms in the area of intensive agriculture in Wielkopolska (District gostyński) according to their types. It has been shown the highest degree of technical efficiency and environmental sustainability of farms specialized in cattle breeding. Inverse relationship occurred in farms specialized in the production of pigs.

Analizowano poziom zrównoważenia produkcji rolniczej w aspekcie nakładów materiałowo-energetycznych, ponoszonych w 42 gospodarstwach, zlokalizowanych w różnych regionach Polski. Przyjęto kryteria oceny zrównoważenia: ekonomiczne, socjalne, ekologiczne, które analizowano w odniesieniu do intensywności produkcji, nakładów materiałowo- energetycznych, zbilansowania substancji organicznej. Stwierdzono, że przyjęte kryteria zrównoważenia procesu produkcyjnego nie są spełnione równocześnie, w każdej z badanych grup gospodarstw.
The level of agricultural production sustainability was studied on 42 family farms localized in different region of Poland. Evaluation was based on the economic, social and ecological results of sustainability. Following indices were assumed to evaluation: intensity of agricultural production organization, agricultural production factors, organic matter balance in aspect energetic and material inputs. It was stated that the criteria assumed for sustainability of agricultural production process are not fulfilled by the farms.

Opis:
The paper analyses the sustainability level of agricultural production in the ecological, social and economic aspect in 50 organic farms located in the southern Poland. Material and energy inputs, balancing the organic substance, work burdening and economic and production effects were assumed as the measures used for the assessment of those three categories of balancing the production process. Area of agricultural land was accepted as a comparative criterion. It was found out that the assumed criteria of sustaining the production process are met in majority in the investigated farm groups. Statistical analysis proved a significant relation between the area of agricultural land and the basic measures of the production sustainability and the Duncan test showed significant differences between the area groups.
W pracy analizowano poziom zrównoważenia produkcji rolniczej w aspekcie ekologicznym, społecznym i ekonomicznym, w 50 gospodarstwach ekologicznych, zlokalizowanych w regionie Polski południowej. Jako mierniki wykorzystane do oceny tych trzech kategorii zrównoważenia procesu produkcji przyjęto nakłady materiałowo-energetyczne, zbilansowanie substancji organicznej, obciążenie pracą oraz efekty ekonomiczno - produkcyjne. Za kryterium porównawcze przyjęto powierzchnię użytków rolnych. Stwierdzono, że przyjęte kryteria zrównoważenia procesu produkcyjnego są w większości spełnione w wyróżnionych grupach gospodarstw. Analiza statystyczna wykazała istotny związek między powierzchnią użytków rolnych a podstawowymi miernikami zrównoważenia produkcji, zaś test Duncana wykazał istotne różnice między grupami obszarowymi.

The current industrial constraints on production systems, especially availability problems are complicating maintenance managers’ mission and making longer and further performance improvement process. Dealing with these problems in a wiser managerial vision respecting sustainability dimensions would be more efficient to optimize all resources. In this paper, and after addressing the lean/sustainability challenge in a the literature to define main research orientations and critical points in manufacturing and then maintenance specific context, two case studies have been conducted in two production systems in Morocco and Canada, within the objective to set a clearer scene of the lean philosophy implementation in maintenance and within the sustainability scope from an empirical perspective. To activate the social dimension being often non-integrated in the lean/sustainability initiatives, the article authors reveal an original research direction assigning maintenance logistics as the leading part of our approach to cover all sustainability dimensions. Furthermore, its management is discussed for the first time in a sustainable framework, where the authors propose a new model considering the lean/sustainable perspective and inspired by the rich Human-Machine interaction memory to solve daily maintenance problems exploiting the operators’ experience feedback.

The present study proposes a methodology for energy efficiency and sustainability improvement of the operating conditions of batch production systems. The methodology involves applying a conventional system for municipal wastewater treatment using the process of Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion (ATAD) of sludge. Its sustainable operation is essential for the quality of the treated sludge and the reduction of environmental impact. An analysis of the possibilities for energy integration of processes in ATAD systems was performed. The structures for indirect energy integration of processes using storage tanks and mathematical models for describing energy integration for the studied object were proposed. The models are included within a two-stage stochastic optimization problem together with constraints on the physical, technical and technological feasibility of the integration frameworks and temperature constraints with an optimization criterion minimum redesign cost. The obtained results show significant energy savings as a result of energy integration and sustainability to temperature conditions in bioreactors.

Purpose: The aim of the study is to analyze environmental awareness among employees of companies producing plastics, and subsequently to draw conclusions about the level of their pro-environmental awareness. The motive for the implementation of pro-environmental awareness research in plastics-producing plants was their harmful impact on the environment. Design/methodology/approach: The research was a survey that was carried out among 44 workers of plastics enterprises located in south-eastern Poland in the first quarter of 2018. During the selection of companies for research, it was included: their location (south-eastern Poland), long-term operation (more than 30 years), the same type of activity (production of plastics), and whether pro-environmental activities were practiced. Findings: It was concluded that the level of awareness of the employees of plastic industry employees was on a low level. Research limitations/implications: The research sample is only a preliminary sample. It is planned to obtain data from a larger number of companies and verify the data. Practical implications: Enterprises should focus on meeting customer needs and maintaining high-quality products, but taking into account pro-environmental measures that should be a priority. This is possible if pro-environmental awareness is continually shaped. Social implications: The pro-environmental awareness is small among employees from the enterprises, in which pro-environmental actions were not practiced. Employees do not know how the processes are carried out in the company and whether they have any impact on the natural environment. Additionally, the employees of companies not used pro-environmental activities are unaware of the threats resulting from the activities of their company and do not know that other companies about the same activities already apply such activities. Originality/value: These results will allow better decisions in the context of sustainability and improvement actions to achieve a higher level of awareness among the plastic production companies' employees.

Purpose: The aim of the paper is to analyze the concept of sustainable engineering. Design/methodology/approach: Critical literature analysis. Analysis of international literature from main databases and polish literature and legal acts connecting with researched topic. Findings: The publication concentrate on problems connected with sustainable engineering. Especially there is a presentation of main principles of sustainable engineering. In the case of each principle there is an description of those topic with the approaches and the analysis of its importance in industrial organization. The sustainability is an very important concept which can be used in in Industry 4.0 implementation. We should mention that efficient engineering organization should know how to link the sustainability and Industry 4.0 concepts. This can bring the market advantage due to new technology implementation and sustainable production from business and environmental point of view. Originality/value: Detailed analysis of all subjects related to the problems connected with sustainable engineering principles.

Modeling and simulation are key performance analysis and control techniques to optimize decision-making as well as design and operate complex production systems. They are also indicated as one of the technological pillars of modern industry and IT solutions supporting the implementation of the roadmap toward Industry 4.0 in the areas of digital transformation and automation. In the context of the required rapid transformation of today’s enterprises, it becomes extremely important to look for solutions that allow the use of the existing infrastructure, information, and energy, so as to minimize the negative impact of new technologies and the transformation process itself on the environment. The article presents an approach to modeling large and complex production systems with the use of distributed Petri net models allowing the use of the possessed IT infrastructure as consistent with the idea of sustainable development in the activities of enterprises. This eliminates two major problems that render traditional models unusable. The first is related to the difficulties in analyzing and verifying models of enormous size and infinite space of states. The second is related to the required computing power, if such analyzes are to be performed on one computing unit, which would force the producers to replace the IT infrastructure. For this purpose, modular Petri nets are introduced. Other benefits of modularization, such as smaller components that can be independently analyzed, are also presented in the paper. The proposed modular Petri net has been implemented in the proprietary GPenSIM software. The paper is complemented by a practical example of industrial modeling of production systems with automated guided vehicles (AGVs) using the Modular Model with Intelligent Petri Modules.

The concept of “Smart Factory” is a new paradigm. Past studies in literature point out several conceptual understandings of Smart Factory and their classifications. This paper answers the following scientific questions, where does the Smart Factory stand? What are its core characteristics and capabilities? What are the operational outcomes of the currently developed system? How can these pieces of equipment be integrated into an R&D methodology? Methods: Smart factory test-beds are used as a supporting case for this research work. A top-down hierarchical methodology is used to review the recent studies and analysis of the Smart Factory test-beds. The study follows these different steps 1) Literature review on the Smart factory concept on recent studies 2) Reasoning to capture the key characteristics and capabilities from the current developments 3) Experimental investigations to analyze the performances and explicit the sustainable impacts of different cases. Results: We present the Smart Factory “from the concept to operational outcomes”. The results stress: key characteristics, capabilities, influencing factors. Two case studies (literature and own investigation) illustrated the operational outcome and their sustainable impacts. Conclusions: The presented framework summarizes the current body of knowledge of the Smart Factory from review tothe operational outcomes.
Koncepcja “Smart Factory” jest nowym paradygmatem. Najnowsze badania naukowe wskazują na co najmniej kilka znaczeń pojęcia Smart Factory oraz ich klasyfikacji. Prezentowana praca odpowiada na następujące pytania naukowe: na jakim etapie rozwoju jest Smart Factory? Jakie są jego najistotniejsze cechy charakterystyczne i zdolności? Jakie są operacyjne wyniki i możliwości z obecnie rozwijanych systemów? Jak różne elementy wyposażenia mogą być zintegrowane w metodologię R&D? Metody: Panele testujące są używane do wspomagania pracy naukowej. Pionowa hierarchiczna metodologia została zastosowana do analizy ostatnich badań naukowych oraz używanych paneli do testowania Smart Factory. W badaniu można wyodrębnić następujące etapy: 1. Przegląd literatury dotyczący koncepcji Smart Factory, 2. Określenie podstawowych cech charakterystycznych i zdolności w oparciu o najświeższy etap rozwoju, 3. Badania eksperymentalne mające na celu analizę działania i wpływu na rozwój zrównoważony różnych scenariuszy. Wyniki: W pracy przestawiono Smart Factory od przestawienia koncepcji do operacyjnych wyników. Wyniki obejmują: cechy charakterystyczne, zdolności, wpływ czynników. Dwie analizy (literatury oraz badania własne) ilustrują wynik operacyjny i jego wpływ na rozwój zrównoważony. Wnioski: Zaprezentowana praca podsumowuje obecny stan wiedzy na temat Smart Factory w oparciu o przegląd rozwiązań operacyjnych.

The goal of our paper is to make a critical analysis of selected growth models that use the notion of natural capital and to construct the alternative model. In particular we treat the natural capital as a renewable resource and we use CES production function, weakening the assumption of substitutability of natural capital with other forms of capital. We investigate the optimal paths for capital and consumption, giving their characterization in the dependence on the parameters of the model. The paper ends with conclusions derived from the model.
Celem artykułu jest dokonanie krytycznej analizy wybranych modeli wzrostu proponowanych w ramach szkoły ekonomii ekologicznej oraz odwołujących się do kategorii kapitału naturalnego, jak również próba konstrukcji alternatywnego modelu. W szczególności traktujemy kapitał naturalny jako odnawialny zasób i używamy funkcji produkcji CES, tym samym ograniczając możliwości substytucji kapitału naturalnego innymi formami kapitału. Analizowane są optymalne (tj. maksymalizujące dobrobyt społeczny) ścieżki kapitału i konsumpcji. Artykuł kończy się wnioskami formułowanymi na podstawie modelu.

Opis:
The first part of the paper presents a synthetic approach to the evolving goals and accompanying major principles of forest management. The other parts of the paper concentrate on the assessment of current economic and financial conditions of forest management in the state−owned forests on the example of the selected countries (West Germany, Austria, Finland and Poland), which differ in organisation systems of forest management. The last part of the paper contains a number of statements of a general nature.

Opis:
The main aim of the paper is to study the impact of the level of digitization of business activities on the human resources orientation on sustainable consumption and production (SCP) in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Design/methodology/approach: During the research process, a survey was conducted among 140 SMEs in Poland at the beginning of 2020. The multiple regression model was built to find the link between the variables. Findings: Statistical analysis indicated that digitization did not have a clearly positive impact on employees’ orientation towards SCP. Among the analysed variables, negatively correlated relationships appeared, especially in the area of the digitization of contacts with the customers. Research limitations: As limitations, it can be pointed the managerial approach during survey research, limited research group, as well as the study period excluding pandemic time. Originality/value: The novelty of the research manifests itself in in the fact that the research problem was applied to the small and medium-sized enterprises, instead of to corporations.
