Opis:
The port of Khour Al-Zubair is located 60.0 km south of the city centre of Basrah; it is also located 105.0 kilometres from the northern tip of the Arabian Gulf. The main goal of this paper is to estimate the concentration of suspended deposit (SSC) in “Khour Al-Zubair” port using a Multilayer Perceptron Neural Network (MLP) based on hydraulic and local boundary parameters while also studying the effect of these parameters on estimating the SSC. Five input parameters (channel width, water depth, discharge, cross-section area, and flow velocity) are used for estimating SSC. Different input hydraulic and local boundary parameter combinations in the three sections (port center, port south, and port north) were used for creating nine models. The use of both hydraulic and local boundary parameters for SSC estimation is very important in the port area for estimating sediment loads without the need for field measurements, which require effort and time.

Opis:
The study was carried out in the area of three dam reservoirs: Blizne and Maziarnia (Voivodeship of Podkarpackie) and Nielisz (Voivodeship of Lublin). The main parameter differentiating the reservoirs was the water retention time and the manner of water discharge from the reservoirs. Three test sites were designated in the area of each reservoir: in the river zone of the reservoir, in the central part of the reservoir, and near the reservoir dam. At these sites, the concentrations of suspended sediment in the water and the content of organic matter in it, the concentrations of total phosphorus and total nitrogen, as well as chlorophyll a were monitored. In addition, two control sites were established: on the river upstream of the reservoir and on the river downstream of the dam, respectively. At these points, the concentrations of suspended sediments in the water and their organic matter content were recorded. The obtained results of the study and multivariate analysis of the data showed that morphometric parameters (including water retention time) of reservoirs and the method of water discharge influence water quality in downstream rivers. It was found that by using lower discharge and ensuring a sufficiently long retention time of water in the reservoir, it is possible to effectively limit the negative aspects of hydrotechnical structures’ impact on the natural environment. In practice, the observed relationships may constitute an important and missing link in the aspect of minimising undesirable side effects of this type of hydrotechnical objects.

W rolniczej zlewni Dworskiego Potoku wyróżniono 10 węzłów: ciek–ciek, ciek–dolina, dolina–dolina i droga–droga. Najwięcej skrzyżowań występuje pomiędzy dolinami (połączenie dolina–dolina) oraz pomiędzy dolinami i ciekami (połączenie ciek–dolina). W zalesionej zlewni Leśnego Potoku wyróżniono 497 węzłów: ciek–ciek, ciek–dolina, ciek–droga, dolina–dolina i droga– droga.
Understanding sediment sources, routes and transport dynamics, and the factors that underlie spatial and temporal variability in suspended sediment transport in rivers is still a key cognitive issue in geomorphology. In the catchment area, three networks allow the transport of water and sediment. These are valley and river natural networks as well as a road network related to anthropogenic activity. The valley, river and road networks are interconnected, and sediment influx to fluvial transport pathways may be entered in sites of these connectivity. The aim of this work is to describe role of valley network, river network and road network in the transport of the suspended sediment in agricultural and forested catchments. The study is based on research performed in the Dworski Potok and Leśny Potok catchments located in Wiśnicz Foothills, Poland. In agricultural Dworski Potok catchment following 10 nodes has been distinguished: watercourse–watercourse, watercourse–valley, valley–valley, and road–road. The most of junction appear between valleys (valley–valley node) and between valleys and watercourses (watercourse–valley node). In Leśny Potok catchment 497 nodes has been distinguished: watercourse–watercourse, watercourse–valley, watercourse–road, valley– valley, and road–road. The most of nodes appear between valleys (valley–valley node), next between roads (road–road node), and between valleys and watercourses (watercourse–valley node). Less common are the connections between roads and valleys and between roads and watercourses. The least of connections appear between watercourses.

Estimating the amount of suspended sediment in rivers correctly is important due to the adverse impacts encountered during the design and maintenance of hydraulic structures such as dams, regulators, water channels and bridges. The sediment concentration and discharge currents have usually complex relationship, especially on long term scales, which can lead to high uncertainties in load estimates for certain components. In this paper, with several data-driven methods, including two types of perceptron support vector machines with radial basis function kernel (SVM-RBF), and poly kernel learning algorithms (SVM-PK), Library SVM (LibSVM), adaptive neuro-fuzzy (NF) and statistical approaches such as sediment rating curves (SRC), multi linear regression (MLR) are used for forecasting daily suspended sediment concentration from daily temperature of water and streamflow in the river. Daily data are measured at Augusta station by the US Geological Survey. 15 different input combinations (1 to 15) were used for SVM-PK, SVM-RBF, LibSVM, NF and MLR model studies. All approaches are compared to each other according to three statistical criteria; mean absolute errors (MAE), root mean square errors (RMSE) and correlation coefficient (R). Of the applied linear and nonlinear methods, LibSVM and NF have good results, but LibSVM generates a slightly better fit under whole daily sediment values.

Assessing the tendency of suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in the river watersheds enables a better understanding of the hydromorphological properties of its basins and the associated processes. In addition, analyzing this trend is essential to address several important issues such as erosion, water pollution, human health risks, etc. Therefore, it is critical to determine a proper method to quantify spatio-temporal variability in SSC. In recent years, remote sensing and GIS technologies are being widely applied to support scientists, researchers, and environmental resource investigators to quickly and synchronously capture information on a large scale. The combination of remote sensing and GIS data will become the reliable and timely updated data source for the managers, researchers on many fields. There are several tools, software, algorithms being used in extracting information from satellites and support for the analysis, image interpretation, data collection. The information from satellite images related to water resources includes vegetational cover, flooding events on a large scale, rain forecast, population distribution, forest fire, landslide movements, sedimentation, etc., and especially information on water quality, sediment concentration. This paper presents the initial result from LANDSAT satellite image interpretation to investigate the amount of sediment carried downstream of the Ba river basin.

Soil loss is a major problem for watersheds management in semi-arid environments. The objective of the present study is to analyze the annual and seasonal patterns of suspended loads and quantify the specific sediment yields in a semi-arid environment of the Mazafran Watershed in central Algeria. The obtained information of water discharge and suspended sediment load, recorded during 19 years, was confronted with precipitation data in order to establish the relationships between theforcing agents and erosive processes. The specific sediment yield was estimated by assessing rating curve data under two types of identified responses. The obtained results allowedconfirming the seasonality on suspended sediment transport in the studied basin, which accounts for 56% of the total suspended sediment load estimated in winter. The mean annual suspended sediment is estimated at 17.52 Mg∙ha–1·y–1. The results highlighted that the type 2 event dominates the production of sediment in the study area in comparison with type 1 event. The analysis of the variability of rainfall erosivity index showed that there is a strong correlation between the annual precipitation and modified Fournier index (MFI), and a weak correlation with the monthly precipitation concentration index (PCI). Moreover, the spatial distribution of the modified Fournier index at the basin scale showed the highest precipitation aggressiveness in the Southern part of the study region for both type of events, whereas the precipitation aggressiveness low to moderate in the remaining part of the study region.

Opis:
In the Colorado River Delta, the interaction of tidal currents and sea-bottom sediment formed, in geological times, large-scale seabed patterns known as sandbanks. These patterns are oriented along the delta, almost parallel to the dominant tidal flow, with the bathymetry having an undulating character across the delta. Calculations and analysis showed that the interaction of tidal currents with the bathymetry causes velocity shears, faster flowing over the ridges than in the troughs. Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities emerge from the velocity shear, and a large amount of suspended sediment makes the instabilities visible in satellite images. The physical and dynamic conditions allowed us to find an explanation for the existence of these Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. Since sandbanks have been observed in different seas such as the North Sea, The Gulf of Korea, the Gulf of Khambhat in India, the Jiangsu coast in China, the Persian Gulf, and Moreton Bay in Australia, the results suggest the existence of instabilities in these areas. Satellite images, intense tidal currents, undulating topography, and suspended sediment made it possible to explain the generation and identification of KelvinHelmholtz instabilities.

Opis:
Concentrations of suspended sediment transported by rivers are influenced by interactions between multiple drivers that act on a range of spatial and temporal scales. Such levels vary over the year, as well as across multi-year periods. Most conventional approaches to determining suspended load are based upon analyses of total suspended sediment concentration (SSC), i.e., the sum of mineral and organic matter. This approach makes it difficult, if not impossible, to determine the impact of multiple environmental factors on changes in suspension concentration precisely. The present paper focuses on the mineral and organic components of suspended sediment with the aim of determining how our knowledge of the share of each individual component can improve interpretations of SSC fluctuations during a hydrological year. The analysis conducted (personal and other researchers’ results) has shown that mineral and organic suspensions demonstrate mutually incompatible opposite trends under influence of environmental factors. This analysis of organic components identifies clear seasonal trends, which indicates that organic suspensions of autogenous origin have a strong influence on the dynamics of changes in suspension concentration; such analyses are rarely included in assessments of SSC dynamics.

When high precision modelling is required, for example, with the estimation of suspended sediment load (SSL), data-driven models are preferred over physically-based numerical models for their real-time, short-horizon prediction ability. The investigation of SSL, as an important index in engineering practices assessment, like design and operation of the hydraulic structures not only shows the hydrological behaviour of the river, but also illustrates the valuable information about the water quality deterioration, surface-groundwater interaction and land-use changes of the watershed. The following data-driven methods were compared in order to predict SSL at the Seyra gauging station on the Karaj River in Iran: Fuzzy logic (FL), two adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference systems (i.e., ANFIS-GP and ANFIS-FCM models), an artificial neural network (ANN), and least squares support vector machine (LSSVM). Monthly average river flow and SSL data for 50 years were obtained from the Tehran Regional Water Authority (TRWA). The data was first divided into training, validation and test sets and the SSL was then predicted using the ANN, FL, ANFIS, and LSSVM models. The reliability of the applied models was evaluated by the correlation coefficient (R), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE). The results showed that the ANFIS models outperformed the ANN, FL, and LSSVM models for predicting SSL using the given input and output data. Overall, the performances of the artificial intelligence models used in the present study were satisfactory in predicting the non-linear behaviour of the SSL.

Opis:
Fluctuations in suspended sediment concentration (SSC) has been investigated in the Warta River(western Poland), based on data obtained for the period 1961-1980 from three gauge stations located in upstream, middle-stream and downstream areas. Over the two decades, the SSC values demonstrated wide fluctuations and an overall increase at each gauge station. No significant correlation was generally observed between SSC and discharge but high SSC was found to follow low discharge and increasing temperature during the summer seasons in some years. Measurements of SSC and discharge were used to estimate total annual suspended sediment load (SSL). SSL values were found to increase downstream along with an increase in discharge. SSC decreases along the river course. However, when it comes to changes over time, SSL variability was mainly determined by SSC changes. The maximum SSC values were primary caused by anthropogenic factors: the disposal of mine wastewater upstream, river training works, increased urbanisation and the intensification of sewage disposal. Where the river catchment has been greatly affected by anthropogenic factors, a denudation index calculated solely based on SSC and discharge does not appear to reflect the actual denudation rate, and must be treated with caution.

The transformations of river channels as a result of human activity may reflect the level of anthropogenic pressure. Recorded in macroscale, they are indicators of transformations for the larger part of the river basin, while in the microscale they usually refer to its fragment. The human activity that has the strongest influence on the fluvial processes, including suspended sediment transport, is the interference in the riverbed, such as hydrotechnical construction (create of water stages) or transformation of the river banks (concreting of the river banks). The aim of the research was to determine the impact of bridges on the process of water turbidity in the longitudinal profile of large lowland rivers. The research area was the lower reach of Vistula – bridge profiles: Torun, Bydgoszcz, Kiezmark (Poland) and bridge profile on Sukhona – a tributary of the Northern Dvina River near the city of Veliky Ustyug (Russia – Arkhangelsk Oblast). The research conducted in the years 2013–2017 included the measurements of water turbidity in the cross-sections of the above-mentioned rivers. The determinations of water turbidity were carried out using traditional (granulometry analysis) and nephelometric methods (devices: LISST-25X and turbidimeter). The impact of bridges on the variability of water turbidity was determined. The obtained results were related to the variability of depth conditions (bathymetric measurements) and hydrodynamics in the cross-section profile of the channel.

Opis:
To investigate and assess the effects of land use and its changes on concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Fe) in the tributary of drinking water reservoir catchment, soils of different land use types (forest, arable land, meadows and pastures, residential areas), suspended sediment and bottom sediment were collected. Heavy metals were analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS). The metal distribution pattern was observed, where Zn and Cd could be considered as main metal contaminants. The variation in the concentration level of Zn and Cd in studied soils showed the impact of pollution from anthropogenic activities. Also some seasonal variations were visible among the suspended sediment and bottom sediment samples which could be associated with land agricultural practices or meteorological conditions. The sediment fingerprints approach used for determining sources of the suspension in the catchment showed (Kruskal-Wallis H test, p˂0.05), that only Mn and Ni were not able to be distinguished among the potential sediment sources. A multiple linear regression model described the relationship between suspended sediment and 4 types of soil samples. The results related suspended composition mostly to the samples from the residential land use. Considering the contemporary trend of observed changes in land use resulting in conversion of agricultural areas into residential and service structures these changes can be essential for the contamination of aquatic environment. This situation is a warning sign due to the rapid industrialization, urbanization and intensive agriculture in this region what can significantly affect the drinking water quality.
Celem pracy była ocena wpływu użytkowania gruntów i ich zmian na stężenia metali ciężkich (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Mn, Ni, Fe) w dopływie zlewni zbiornika wody pitnej. Do badań pobrano próbki gleb z różnych typów użytkowania gruntów (las, grunty orne, łąki i pastwiska, tereny zabudowane), rumowiska unoszonego oraz osadów dennych.
