The finishing processes are an important perspective to be considered today to meet the goals like parallelism, tolerances, flatness and smooth surface of workpieces. These processes are high-precision abrasive processes. A leading importance in this perspective has the lapping process. It leads to a surface with low roughness and high precision. This paper reports the results of surface analysis of sealing elements made of oxide ceramic Al2O3. Because of elements, application as sealing parts in water valves, high surface quality and flatness is required. To meet those requirements grinding and lapping were execute. The first was realized by elements manufacturer, the second – during experiments. Research was carried out on a plate-lapping machine ABRALAP 380 with a grooved cast-iron lapping plate and three conditioning rings. As abrasive material boron carbide was use. Surface quality was investigated firstly after grinding and then, after lapping. A Hommeltester T8000-R60 profilometer with a resolution of 0.01 μm was used. The surface roughness parameters Ra and Rk were studied in the light of varying lapping parameters, like grains size, lapping pressure, velocity and time. According to literature, those are the most extensively used parameters for describing the surface roughness after finishing processes. Additionally the Abbot Firestone curves were analysed.

Opis:
Accuracy of machined components is one of the most critical considerations for any manufacturer. However, when milling the radial force deflects the cutting tool and workpiece. It affects the precision and quality of machined surfaces. The extent of the deviations can be predicted in various mathematical models. Thus, the errors can be compensated in NC programme effectively. So it is possible to machine with high cutting conditions, and also a high quality of machined surface can be achieved. In this paper are predicted deflection of milling tools and thin-walled workpiece. The experimental results show that the overall error in the flexible milling can be captured and predicted with very high accuracy.

Tapping is a very common machining process for producing internal threads. A tap is a cylindrical or tapered thread cutting tool having threads of a desired form on the periphery. Combining rotary motion with axial motion, a tap cuts or forms the internal thread. Due to desired accuracy and versatility of thread profiles most taps are made of high speed steel. Physical surface coating taps (monolayer, duplex or triplex) increases tap life and improves thread finish. Regarding the CNC canned cycles the demands on safe tool performance of the threads are more and more urgent. This paper deals with a study of 2D surface parameters, Coulomb´s coefficient of friction, energy consumption and cutting/forming performance of selected PVD coated HSS taps when machining of carbon steel C45 and forming of hardened steel 42CrMo4V.

One of the innovative technology of producing the components is Selective Laser Melting (SLM) belongs to additive manufacturing techniques. SLM technology has already been successfully applied in the automotive, aerospace and medical industries. Despite progress in material flexibility and mechanical performances, relatively poor surface finish still presents a significant weakness in the SLM process. The scope of the present article is the study the influence of selective laser melting parameters such as laser power, scanning speed, exposure time and hatch spacing through additive manufacturing as well as the orientation of the model corresponding to the laser beam on the surface characteristic of the components made from Ti-6A1-4V alloy. By using optimized process parameters, a low surface roughness can be obtained. In research, the machine for the selective laser melting of metal powders Renishaw AM 125 device was used. Based on experiment plan, 32 models were produced, which were examined to define the surface roughness and thus represent an influence of process parameters and the orientation on the model surface quality. The article discusses the fundamental factors determining the roughness that gives invaluable knowledge to improve the surface quality of SLM parts.

Opis:
Flap peening (FP) is a cold working technique used to apply a compressive force using small shots, this will lead to enhance the surface properties that it can sustain for long life during working conditions. In this study, several aircraft aluminum alloys materials namely; 2219 T6, 2024 T6, 7075 T6, and 6061 T6 were flap peened under different rotational speeds. The effect of rotational speed on the average surface roughness (Ra) and average surface micro hardness have been investigated. As seen by the Scanning Electron Microscope SEM phots that the hardness of peened layer is increased. It was found that as the flap peening speeds increase the percent change in surface roughness (Ra) increases, and the percent change in surface micro hardness decreases. The maximum increase in Ra occurs in 2219 T80 and the minimum in 6061 T6 alloys, and for hardness, it is reported that the maximum occurs in 6061 T6 and the minimum in 2019 T80 alloy.

W artykule przedstawiono analizy wpływu rozmieszczenia ziaren na powierzchni ściernicy na jakość powierzchni obrobionej z wykorzystaniem symulacji komputerowej procesu szlifowania opracowanej przez autorów. Analizie poddano ściernice o ciągłej i nieciągłej strukturze charakteryzującej się naprzemiennym występowanie dwumilimetrowych pasm z ziarnami i wgłębień wzdłuż tworzącej ściernicy, a następnie określono wpływ topografii ściernicy na jakość obrobionej powierzchni.
The paper presents the results of computer simulation investigations of grinding process with use of two models of grinding wheel surface: with continuous and discontinuous grain arrangement. The analysis shows influence of the grain arrangement on the machined surface quality. Discontinuity on the grinding wheel surface results in deterioration of the machined surface roughness. Macro-geometry of the grinding wheel surface with discontinuous grain arrangement influences significantly the nature of load on abrasive grains in the machining zone. In the case of grinding wheel with discontinuous surface, sections of the material machined by single grinding grains are larger, while, at the same time, the number of active grains in the machined zone is reduced, which changes the work conditions of the grains. When grinding planes, a discontinuity of the grinding wheel surface in the form of grooves has an influence on the roughness of the surface machined. Circumferential grooves, depending on the transverse feed, impair the topography of the surface machined and cause the occurrence of strips of higher roughness, or even the occurrence of non-machined strips. Skew grooves result in creation of local protrusions on the object of higher roughness, while transverse grooves constitute the form of discontinuity which does not cause local deterioration of the machined object surface.

This comprehensive survey highlights some important finishing processes used in fabricating additively manufactured parts, mainly using SLM (Selective Laser Melting). In practice, there are applied hybrid processes which integrate additive and subtractive componential processes (AM+SM type) or additional finishing processes, mainly based on the electrochemical polishing such as ECP (Electrochemical Cavitation Polishing) and PEMEC (Electrochemical-Mechanical Polishing) ones. On the other hand, AFM (Abrasive Flow Machining) is predominantly recommended for conformal cooling (CC) channels. Some conclusions and future trends in the implementation of special hybrid finishing processes are outlined.

Lapping is used in the production of components of the highest quality in terms of form finish accuracy and surface integrity. A number of precision manufacturing applications use lapping process as a critical technology to achieve thickness tolerance and surface quality specification. Because of required parts accuracy tool flatness is the key to the successful machining. To avoid its excessive thermal expansion, plate temperature research was taken. This article goal was to check the influence of lapping wheel temperature on workpiece roughness after lapping process. In earlier work, authors investigated the dependence between time and the temperature of executory system elements. Tests showed that after five hours of machine working temperature stabilizes and slightly fluctuated around a certain value. Thus, this work concerns lapping results in this elevated temperature. Research was proceed during Al2O3 elements lapping. It was realised with use of ABRALAP 380 lapping machine. The lapping machine executory system consisted of three working conditioning rings. Executory system elements temperature was measured remotely by infrared camera Thermo Gear G100. Elements machining was started after 10, 140, and 270 minutes of machine working time. Studies showed that machine executory system elements temperature affected only the ΔRa parameter, which is higher for surfaces, which were processed starting from 270th minute of machine working time.

Successful casting demands that during pouring of the foundry mould with molten metal the mould cavity suffers no deformation. This, in turn, demands the use of binding materials that can give the base sand adequate strength. The main bonding materials are clay binders. The foundry industry uses minerals rich in clay, such as kaolinite, halloysite, hydromica, montmorillonite, polygorskite, vermiculite and allophane. Due to their binding capacity, montmorillonites are the most interesting minerals of all the plastic clay rocks. The basic clay rock containing montmorillonite, used as a common binding material for traditional foundry sand mixtures, is bentonite. The domestic demand for raw bentonite materials is almost entirely satisfied by imports from Slovakia, Turkey, Italy, Germany and the Czech Republic, in order of import size. In Poland, the bentonite deposits occur in very small quantities. The exploitation of bentonites is carried out only in the Krzeniów deposit, where they constitute a mineral accompanying basalt. Much more common are bentonite clays containing in addition to smectites also a large amount of other clay minerals. The article presents the results of studies of the physico-chemical and mechanical properties of moulding sand mixtures containing pure bentonite, pure clay or hybrid bentonites which are a bentonite-clay mixture. Melting was also carried out to determine the effect of the type of binder on the surface quality of iron castings.

In metal cutting industries, machining processing, especially turning operation is very basic type of machining. For certain processes in manufacturing, it is favourable and necessary to have certain knowledge about heat generation and temperature rise (including average and maximum temperature) during machining process. Increment in maximum temperature at clearance face or at rake face of cutting tool causes the reduction in life of tool. Similarly, the quality of machined surface, a metallurgical structural alteration in tool and workpiece material also depends on the maximum temperature, temperature gradient and cooling rate of both tool and workpiece. Certain physical and chemical reactions that are developed during the cutting process are directly connected with tool wear, power consumption, surface roughness on work piece material and cutting temperature. The natural low of thermal energy gives significant relationship between cutting temperature and cutting parameters in order to improvement of cutting tool’s wok efficiency, quality and accuracy. The heat distribution in cutting tool, in formed chip and in workpiece material strongly depends on (mechanical and chemical) properties of cutting tool and workpiece material, cutting speed, depth of cut, feed rate, nose radius, geometry of tool, type of coolant used and other parameters. This work presents some results of research done during turning steel 235JR realized on conventional lathe CDS 6250 BX-1000 with severe parameters. These demonstrate the necessity of further, more detailed research on turning process temperature, realized for different materials.

In this study the research on deformability of AlMg alloys with high Mg contents in extrusion was carried out. The different shapes from AlMg alloys containing 3.5%, 4.5% and 5.5% of Mg were extruded on 500 T semi-industrial press by using one-hole and multi-hole flat dies. The extrudates surface quality was under investigations in relation with the temperature-speed parameters of the extrusion process. The metal exit speed was estimated depending on the extrudates shape, wall thickness and Mg content. The alloy’s border solidus and liquidus temperatures were also determined.

In the present work, the optimal conditions for solid bonding of fragmented aluminum alloy were determined. The research was conducted on metal chips from the AlSi11 TM aluminum alloy after the turning process. The selection of proper bonding conditions was based on the results of tensile tests and surface quality analysis of as-extruded profiles. The extrusion process was conducted within a temperature range of 350–500°C, with a ram speed of 13 mm/s. Extrusion ratio λ was 25. As a reference material, a sample from the solid AlSi11 IM alloy has been extruded under the same conditions. The influence of temperature during direct extrusion on both maximum force and surface quality of obtained profiles has been determined. With reference to tensile test results, no significant influence of temperature on the mechanical properties has been noticed. Profiles extruded at 500°C were characterized by visible cracks on the surface, oriented perpendicular in the direction of extrusion. Moreover, surface flaws were also noticed in profiles extruded at 350°C. A tensile test revealed a strong relationship between the extrusion conditions and plasticity of solid bonded rods. A shiny and smooth surface was obtained only in profiles extruded at a temperature range of 400–450°C.
W niniejszej pracy określono optymalne parametry procesu konsolidacji plastycznej drobnych form aluminium. Badaniu poddano wióry ze stopu AlSi11 (AK11 TM) otrzymane w procesie toczenia. Doboru optymalnych warunków konsolidacji plastycznej dokonano na podstawie własności mechanicznych oraz stanu powierzchni prasówki. Wyciskanie przeprowadzono na prasie współbieżnej w zakresie temperatur 350–500°C z prędkością stempla 13 mm/s. Stopień przerobu wynosił λ = 25. Jako materiał porównawczy wyciśnięto w tych samych warunkach materiał lity AlSi11 (AK11 IM) o tej samej masie. Określono wpływ temperatury wyciskania współbieżnego na siły maksymalne w procesie oraz jakość powierzchni przy użyciu SEM. Dodatkowo wyznaczono własności mechaniczne w próbie jednoosiowego rozciągania uzyskanych profili. Nie zaobserwowano znaczącego wpływu temperatury procesu na otrzymane własności wytrzymałościowe oraz plastyczne. Powierzchnia profili wyciskanych w 500°C charakteryzowała się prostopadłymi pęknięciami do kierunku wyciskania. Wady powierzchniowe zaobserwowano również w prętach wyciskanych w temperaturze 350°C. Badania wytrzymałościowe wykazały silny wpływ warunków konsolidacji na własności plastyczne profili otrzymanych z wiórów AlSi11. Pręty wyciśnięte w temperaturze 400°C i 450°C cechowały się gładką i błyszczącą powierzchnią.

This study evaluated some properties of sesenduk (Endospermum malaccense) wood treated with propionic anhydride and exposed to outdoor conditions for up to one year. Defect-free samples of sesenduk were extracted with a 3:1:1 (v/v) mixture of toluene, ethanol and acetone for 3 hours at a temperature of 100°C. The samples were then modified at the same temperature for another 3 hours using propionic anhydride and 10% sodium formate as catalyst. Modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR) and parallel-to-grain compression strength of the samples exposed to weathering were tested. Chemical treatment reduced the MOE but slightly increased the MOR and parallel-to-grain compression strength compared with untreated samples. However, treated samples retained higher strength properties than untreated ones. The modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture and parallel-to-grain compression strength of treated samples at radial orientation were respectively 20%, 31% and 62% higher than those of untreated samples after one year’s outdoor exposure. Weathering adversely influenced the surface quality of the specimens for all exposure times.

In this paper, the degree of contamination of water was determined from anthropogenic reservoirs, located in the area of former coal mine Rozbark in Bytom. The physicochemical analysis of water indicated a high degree of anthropopression. In all analyzed reservoirs, permissible concentrations of chlorides and sulphates were exceeded. In the majority of them, the values of electrical conductivity and total suspended solids were also exceeded. In order to determine the transformation of surface water contamination, there was a comparison of archival data of water quality and laboratory tests performed after five years. Comparative analysis shows that in the last five years, there has been no improvement in the quality of the analyzed surface waters. In fact deterioration of the quality was noticeable.

The main idea of the work is to create scientifically grounded technological conditions for treatment of tab grooves in the discs from heat resisting steel, which stipulate formation of roughness of treated surfaces at the level of design requirements, useful compressive residual stresses and a defective surface layer, which increases reliability of operation of interlock in the absence of any defects on the working surfaces of tab grooves of various types, under conditions of maximizing efficiency of their treatment method. Dependences of roughness of the treated surface on the technological factors of the broaching process Ra = f (V, S, γ, HRC) have been proposed. As a result of experimental studies, the nature of distribution of residual stresses, depth and degree of strengthening of the surface layer, depending on the technological conditions of the tab grooves treatment, has been established. The article presents research of surface quality parameters; study all the selected parameters of the surface quality and surface layer and an algorithm to perform experimental work. The algorithm has been built on major principles of control and fixation methods, which stipulate use of non-destructive methods of control. Graphs of strengthening the surface layer of samples, depending on their processing modes and graphs of the distribution of residual stresses in the surface layer are also presented.
