Opis:
We study the contribution of variable surface effects to the antiplane deformation of a linearly elastic material with a mode-III crack. The surface elasticity is incorporated using a modified version of the continuum based surface/interface model of Gurtin and Murdoch. In our discussion, the surface moduli are not constant but vary along the crack surfaces. Using Green’s function method, the problem is reduced to a single first-order Cauchy singular integro-differential equation, which is solved numerically using Chebyshev polynomials and a collocation method. Our results indicate that the gradient of the surface shear modulus exerts a significant influence on the crack opening displacement and on the singular stress field at the crack tips.

This paper presents the aim and realization procedures of the project EURO- ACCESS (Agroclimatic Change and European Soil Suitability, No. EV5VCT920129, CIPA3510PL923399, CIPDCT930022, CIPDCT925058, financed by EC). The project was coordinated by Dr. Peter Loveland, Soil Survey and Land Research Centre. Crarifield University, Silsoe Campus, Bedford, Great Britain. The project was conducted in 1992-1995 by scientific institutes from 6 countries, including the Institute of Agrophysics, Polish Academy of Sciences in Lublin. This book consists of main information about the whole project and detailed information about, tasks performed by the Institute of Agrophysics, PAS in cooperation with the Institute of Soil Science and Plant Cultivation (IUNG) Puławy as well as with other European institutes. There are presented results of investigations conducted in cooperation with ADAS Land Centre, Gleadthorpe Research Centre, Meden Vale, Mansfield, Great Britain, (Chapt. 2: Modelling of water movement in the soil profile with the preferential flow influence.), Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, Lublin, Poland (Chapter 3: The method of rainfall intensity estimation for runoff prediction), INRA Montpellier, Prance and IUNG Puławy, Poland (Chapter 4: Verification of yield prediction model using soil and climatic data). The basic task of EURO-ACCESSS project was the model and program development for prediction of climate change influence onto potential yield of important crops. The climatic and physiological properties are assumed to be known. In hydrological submodel developed in ADAS, Mansfield, there was Richards one dimensional flow model assumed. In order to include heterogeneity of the soil the submodel of bypass flow was created by IA PAS and included into existing one dimensional flow procedure. The horizontal infiltration submodel is based on Green- Ampt simplified flow model. It plays role of source and/or sink term within the Richards procedure and accounts for the bypass flow of water from the surface to the deeper layers of the soil profile. The model has been verified in the laboratory conditions, on the basis of numerical experiments and in the field condition. Laboratory flow experiment with induced cracks shows the possibility of explanation of bypass flow with developed procedure. Numerical experiment shows ade- quateness of proposed crack and inaeropore description to the field data. The model allows easily estimate macropore parameters from the simple measurements at the soil surface or from the profile cross-section. The calibration of the model on the basis of measured data consisting soil moistures at different depths and precipitation data, soil hydraulic properties and évapotranspiration data, shows better agreement with the bypass flow model included. The main problem was to estimate momentary rain intensity from the daily precipitation data available. This was done using the statistical model of the rain intensity distribution. The momentary rain intensity plays major role in the runoff estimation. On the basis of long term (1982-1993) historical precipitation, climatic and yield data collected in IUNG Puławy, the whole EURO-ACCESS II has been verified. The plant submodel based on EPIC model was modified and suited to European conditions by INRA, Montpellier. The whole verification was conducted on the basis of daily climatic data. The error analysis shows that, during 1985-1990 period when model was calibrated estimated yield error was 22,5%-, for the period 1984 and 1991 1993 where model was verified the yield error was 8.0%. For the whole period of simulation the error was 15.3%.

Opis:
The article describes two groups of damage that may affect roads. The most prevalent damage inside the construction of the surface are reflected transverse cracks, being usually a result of leaving the bottom cement-based structural layers. However damage appearing on the surface of new asphalt surfaces is the formation of permanent deformations (wheelruts), loss of water and frost resistance, and loss of roughness. Thanks to the modern control and measurement apparatus, it is possible to profoundly analyse the material properties, surface parameters and consequently to forecast the durability of asphalt surfaces.

Establishing a fatigue life prediction model considering the machined surface state is of great significance to improve fatigue life prediction accuracy. Fatigue tests with different machined surface states of GH4169 alloy were conducted firstly. The influence of surface state parameters on the fatigue life was analyzed. Then, the machined surface stress concentration factor and residual stress were introduced into the fatigue crack initiation and propagation models. Finally, the fatigue life prediction model of GH4169 material considering the surface states was established. The prediction results based on the proposed model are almost within a factor of two scatter band of the test results.

Opis:
Fracture parameters of an inclined surface crack in a graded half-plane subjected to sliding frictional contact are investigated in this study. The problem is modelled via the finite element method (FEM) under the plane strain assumption employing a newly developed displacement boundary condition. The shear modulus of the half-plane is graded exponentially through the thickness direction by means of the homogeneous finite element approach. The augmented Lagrange algorithm is selected as an iterative contact solver. The mixed mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) which are induced by the contact stresses are evaluated utilizing the Displacement Correlation Technique (DCT). The accuracy of the present procedure is ensured comparing the SIF results to those calculated by an analytical method for vertical surface cracks. Additional SIF curves are generated as functions of the crack inclination in order to reveal the effects of non-homogeneity, punch location, crack length and friction coefficient. The prominent conclusion of this study indicates that the crack orientation has profound effects on the behavior of SIF curves, which has not been presented in any study published so far. Hence, consideration of crack inclination is proved essential to successfully predict fracture behavior of a graded medium under frictional contact.

Opis:
Subsidence and vertical movements in mines are a challenge in mining operations. To qualify as a controlled mine site, ground movements must be measured regularly during mining operations. Boleo Copper District mine was monitored and the movement during mining operations was measured from Oct. 31, 2018 to March 15, 2019. The evaluation of vertical and horizontal movement was determined in four locations in the mine areas M303, M303S, M303 C, and M305. The exploitation area, which measured approximately 80 £ 90 m2 with a height of 2.4 m, impacted the surface in the form of cracks. These cracks were observed on the topographic surveys and varied during the mining operations from the beginning to the end. The final results indicated that the points with the greatest displacement were those in the central zone of the mine excavation (points #3, 5, and 6) and the displacement trend of the ground was toward this zone. In theory, the subsidence is typically lesser than the thickness of the extracted ore. In this case, the maximum subsidence was 1.15 m and the ore seam thickness was 2.4 m. The maximum possible subsidence is typically 55-65% of the extracted seam thickness; however, because chain pillars are generally left in place, and provide some support, this maximum possible subsidence is rarely reached. In this case, the maximum subsidence was 52% of the seam thickness.

Opis:
Support frameworks of transport vehicles operate under varying terrain conditions under the influence of extreme climate and corrosive environments. When transporting cargo, dust is deposited on the surface of metal structures. The combination of dust and moisture creates an aggressive environment resulting in intense corrosion damage. The damage is caused by the defects of corrosion pitting, which occur on the surface and transform into corrosion cracks. Based on energy approaches, with the application of well-known results for the mathematical description of electrochemical reactions and the principles of fragile fracture mechanics, an analytical model of durability is proposed for the first time. The model determines the residual life of maximum loaded elements of undercarriages with surface cracks under the action of dynamic loads and corrosive environments. For this case, a set of mathematical relations in the form of a non-linear differential equation was developed, as well as the initial and final conditions for determining the life of vehicles’ structural elements with corrosive surface cracks. The analytical model implementation is proven by solving the problem of determining the residual life of a vehicle’s element, i.e., a steel plate, weakened by a semi-elliptical surface crack, which is under the action of dynamic loads in a 3% sodium chloride solution. The insignificant increase in the crack’s initial size is proven to greatly reduce the period of its subcritical growth. The developed model was applied to define the residual life of thin-walled elements of structures with surface cracks.

In order to study the effect of different surface crack parameters on the fracture failure of steel plate, the model was established by FEM. The results showed that the edge surface crack has the greatest influence on the fracture failure of the steel plate, and for non-edge surface cracks, the central surface crack has the greatest influence on the fracture failure of the steel plate. The larger the a/t and the smaller the a/c, the easier the steel plate fracture failure occurs. The a/c has a certain influence on the variation law of K and the position where Kmax appears.
