Ewa Piechurska-KucielInstitute of EnglishOpole University Abstract In adolescents the main groups of social support are their family, peers and teachers with whom they interact most frequently. They play a buffering role between stress and psychological well-being by helping to cope with adverse challenges, and by providing social integration. Consequently, it is believed that in the situation of stress caused by the necessity to learn a foreign language (FL) as a compulsory subject, social support can be viewed as an important factor that may positively influence learners’ academic achievement, exposing the role of the perceived availability of significant others’ help in achieving FL success. To date, in spite of the call for research on the general functioning of the language learner as a member of the society, the study on the role of social support in the process of foreign language learning is still scarce. The existing research has tough proved that perceived social support significantly predicts resilience in foreign language learning. The feelings of closeness and support the learners receive from the support network protect them from stressors, and they validate the feelings of self-esteem, competence, and personal control in the face of stressful situations. The three main support groups (parents, teachers and peers) help learners develop their social competence, problem-solving skills, autonomy, and sense of purpose. Keywords: social support, parental support, teacher support, peer support

Many members of a society deal with their everyday problems on their own, but there are people who look for and receive support from other individuals, groups and institutions. Social networks are considered important providers of resources accumulated in and of services delivered by the local community. The article is focused on social support networks of families living in big city in comparison with families living less urbanized communes. The first part of the analyses presents social support networks in various theoretical approaches. The main subject of empirical reflection are the resources available to these families as a result of informal social relations. The main conclusions are that informal social network of studied families is important for solving their every-day problems and the main resource of support for them are close relatives, then friends and the most rarelyneighbors, but the patterns of support expected and received within informal networks vary according to age and quality of residence. The paper is based on the results of the research conducted in 2008–2009 (the quota sample – 500 families living in Lodz and 1000 families living in less urbanized communes) within the project “Social network and local partnership in counteracting social exclusion and intergenerational transmission of poverty” (Nr H02E 021 29) coordinated by author.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. The aim of the study was assessment of the internal consistency and accuracy of the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List – 40 v. GP (ISEL-40 v. GP) in a group of mothers of healthy children and in a group of mothers of children with a medical history, and presentation of the initial research results. Materials and method. A group of 230 mothers were involved in the research: 57 mothers of healthy children, 26 mothers of infants with a perinatal medical history, as well as 147 mothers of hospitalized children. The method of a diagnostic survey with standardized tools, such as the Interpersonal Support Evaluation List (ISEL-40 v. GP), Hospital and Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS) and the authors’ own questionnaire was utilized. Results. Analysis of the research results suggests satisfactory internal consistency of the ISEL-40 v. GP in the researched group (α=0.86). It was also noticed that internal consistency of the subscales varied. The subscales of tangible support (α=0.79) and belonging support (α=0.73) obtained acceptable values. Internal consistency of self-esteem support (α=0.51) and appraisal support (α=0.62) was too low to be recommended for individual and scientific use. An attempt to modify the number of items did not come up to expectations in terms of the subscales internal consistency. Social support in mothers of healthy and ill children was moderate (29.92 – 33.45 points) and no statistically significant differences in their perception of the support were observed. Conclusions. In the research on a group of mothers of healthy and ill children it is recommended to use only a social support indicator based on the general result of the ISEL-40 v. GP. Further research aimed at verification of the theoretical structure of the Polish version of the ISEL-40 v. GP is advised.

The issue of social support for the family seems to be very current and significant, especially nowadays, i.e. in the time of fast changes, globalization and consumerism. Parents raising children with intellectual disability experience many kinds of difficulties which are often impossible to deal with without external support. One of the most important forms of such help is information support, which can be defined as providing information on the child’s development, the methods of coping with difficulties, as well as education, treatment and therapy and the possibilities of support. The research group included 80 parents of children with moderate and severe intellectual disabilities. The mothers and fathers answered questions about people, institutions and organizations from which they expected to receive information support. They also stated their expectations about the kinds and forms of information support they needed.

The aim of our study is to determine the importance of various aspects of delivery and post-natal care for women in the third trimester of pregnancy, and the analysis of relationship of these aspects to selected personal variables also in the context of the relationship with the yet unborn child. In this exploratory study, 94 pregnant respondents participated, including 72% of primiparous and 28% of multiparous women. The participants completed the MFAS questionnaire and a survey in the form of closed questions. The results show that women preparing for childbirth considered as very important medical standards included in the Regulation of the Minister of Health: freedom and the opportunity to decide on issues related to birth and care of a newborn child, as well as care and support from professionals and the loved ones; however, only a third of respondents prepared or are planning to prepare a birth plan. Primiparas, despite a lower sense of preparation for childbirth as compared with multiparas, valued more the availability of natural than pharmacological measures to reduce the pain, and hoped to receive staff’s help at the first stages of child care, which shows the need for post-natal care and support of women, especially those who gave birth to their first child/children. The multiparas found the first breastfeeding immediately after birth as more important than the primiparas. Our results indicate the importance of treating problems with conceiving for the strength of the bond with the unborn child, and show that significant factors for the strength of bond with the unborn child is a longer contact time with the baby immediately after birth and importance attributed to the access to education and counseling.

Underage parenting is an experience that can be defined as difficult, even critical. It is the same both for teenagers and their families. Adopting the role of a father and mother in adolescence, and so prematurely, generates a number of difficulties that occur in almost every sphere of functioning of these young people. It is therefore necessary to take steps supporting not only underage parents, but also their families. In this article, the issue of supporting teen parents and their families have been described. The sources of information are the empirical studies of underage mothers carried out in 2008 and underage fathers in 2012-2013. They enabled not only to recognize the difficulties that usually involve teen parents, but also the scope and type of support they receive.

The teacher’s role is vital, both in respect to achieving academic goals, and with regard to the regulation of emotional and social processes. Positive perceptions of teacher support can endorse psychological wellness, and help maintain students’ academic interests, higher academic achievement and more positive peer relationships. The teacher who shows understanding, empathy and consistency in their behavior helps students start forming an identity, which will assist them in coping with stress and anxiety directly connected with the foreign language learning process (language anxiety). The main aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between teacher support and language anxiety levels. It is speculated that teacher support functions as a buffer from the effects of negative emotions, such as language anxiety experienced in the foreign language learning process. The participants of the study were 621 secondary grammar school students whose responses to a questionnaire were the main data source. The results of the study demonstrate that students with higher levels of teacher support experience lower language anxiety levels in comparison to their peers with lower levels of teacher support. Students who have a feeling that they can count on the instructor’s help, advice, assistance, or backing manage the learning process more successfully. They evaluate their language abilities highly and receive better final grades. Nevertheless, gender and residential location do not moderate teacher support and language anxiety due to the specificity of the sample consisting of novice secondary grammar school students.

Opis:
The article deals with the problem of differential diagnosis of extreme reticence or selective speech in a child, categorised as selective mutism and shyness. Selective mutism is an increasingly recognized disorder among preschool and school children. It manifests itself functionally in the sphere of speech and communication, but in relation to the anxiety factor. As an anxiety disorder, it is categorised in the latest medical classifications ICD-11 and DSM-5, and therefore, primarily psychological or psychiatric therapeutic intervention could be expected. The specificity of the pathomechanism of selective mutism, however, requires interdisciplinary activities, with a room for a speech therapist, a special pedagogue (e.g. at a public school as a supporting teacher), any other pedagogue working with the child (educator, teacher of integrated classes, subject teacher), other specialists (therapist pedagogue, physiotherapist), as well as the parents. The speech therapist may play a special role in the diagnosis of mutism in the conditions of inclusive education, as he will probably be the first specialist who will receive a child who is not speaking or very taciturn at a public school. In the article, the diagnosis of selective mutism is associated with the differential diagnosis of shyness, which may not be treated as a disorder, but only a certain personality trait, but with incompetent pedagogical support in everyday educational practice it can lead to more serious difficulties, including logophobia and mutism. The diagnosis of mutism requires specialised therapeutic measures, but with the awareness of the differences in the situations of a shy child and a child with mutism, it is worth learning some supportive strategies that are useful in both cases.

The article is a report of studies on the relationship between social support and the effectiveness of treatment for diabetes in youth. The aim of this study was to answer the question whether between patients with different treatment outcome differences in perceived social support. The study were 100-strong group of diabetics aged 16–18 years (50 girls and 50 boys), which has been assigned to groups of varying effectiveness of diabetes management. Adopted two criteria for allocation of subjects into groups: 1) the level of self-control of diabetes measured by the scale of „Treatment of Diabetes”(LC), 2) the degree of metabolic control measured by HbA1c. To measure the social support Sarason’s Social Support Questionnaire was used. Analysis of test results does not reveal significant differences in social support among patients with high and low self-control. In patients with varying degrees of metabolic control of diabetes patients with poor treatment outcome perceive less social support network (p < 0.05), but they are more satisfied with it (p < 0.01) than patients with good control of diabetes. In addition, the length of morbidity of diabetes is moderately, negatively correlated with the network of support and the degree of satisfaction with the aid received.
