Opis:
The study examined the light-trap catch of the Scarce Bordered Straw (Helicoverpa armigera Hübner) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) depending on the sunspot numbers. The catching data of examined species were taken from the light-trap registers of the Hungarian Light-trap Network. During the years between 1993 and 2011, 25,531 moths were caught by the 36 light-traps. Our results show that there is low Sun’s activity (the number of sunspots is between 0 and 30); there is no verifiable effect on the efficiency of light trapping of Scarce Bordered Straw. However, in other years, when the number of sunspots is between 30 and 100 and when it is higher than 100, high sunspot numbers cause an increase in the catch.

Opis:
After the publication of Sidereus Nuncius, in the controversy with Ch. Scheiner, Galileo developed several arguments on behalf of the hypothesis that sunspots are contiguous to the surface of the Sun, and presented them in his Istoria e dimostrazioni intorno alle macchie solari e loro accidenti (Rome 1613). One of them, named by Galileo a Practical Method, advocates very clearly the correctness of the hypothesis. In the paper the method in question is briefly described. It is argued that the Practical Method is not a thought experiment, but rather a mental model proposed precisely in order to solve the problem of sunspots’ location.

Opis:
A major source of energy on Earth is solar irradiation. This paper uses the Kolmogorov-Zurbenko filter to smooth and examine sunspot numbers and proves that solar irradiation levels near Earth are strictly proportional to sunspot numbers. This paper also examines the transport of that energy through the atmosphere to Earth’s surface. Long term air temperatures on the surface of Earth perfectly follow the cosine square law along latitudes. Time components of long term temperatures have oscillations which follow oscillations in sunspot numbers, but due to the regular delays in energy transmission they are delayed 4-7 years. Cloud formations and vapor accumulations also contribute to those delays, which have a well-organized time-space structure. The main purpose of this paper is the numerical identification of human influence over changes in solar activities, which may allow researchers to identify the effects of various sources of those influences. This evaluation can only be achieved by separating the scales in order to avoid any false influence from other scales. The clear separation of scales can only be achieved using the Kolmogorov-Zurbenko filter.
