Opis:
Open-loop sulphur scrubbers must be switched off, and the fuel must be changed to low-sulphur fuel before entering German inland waters. Immediately after the scrubbers are turned off, warm exhaust gases cause the residue left in the scrubber to vaporise, leading to the increased sulphur content of the exhaust gas. The momentary increase in sulphur emissions immediately after the open-loop scrubbers are turned off has received little attention in research. This paper presents the onboard measurement results of exhaust gases and examines the effects of sulphur compounds released into the air. In this case, the observed sulphur emission peak is problematic due to the geographical location. The ship sails to the river port, passing the coastal town of Travemünde, where the exhaust gases are released. Due to this, the emissions are more harmful when compared to emissions generated in the open seas.

Opis:
The present paper proposes a CFD model to study sulphur dioxide (SO2) absorption in seawater. The focus is on the treatment of marine diesel engine exhaust gas. Both seawater and distilled water were compared to analyze the effect of seawater alkalinity. The results indicate that seawater is more appropriate than distilled water due to its alkalinity, obtaining almost 100% cleaning efficiency for the conditions analyzed. This SO2 reduction meets the limits of SOx emission control areas (SECA) when operating on heavy fuel oil. These numerical simulations were satisfactory validated with experimental tests. Such data are essential in designing seawater scrubbers and judging the operating cost of seawater scrubbing compared to alternative fuels.

Opis:
In the article, legal norms regarding the reduction of sulphur content limits in exhaust gases in special areas were presented. Then an overview of various solutions for supplying the marine engine with heavy fuel, distillation fuel and gas was made. In addition, the problem of using low-sulphur fuels in internal combustion engines was described. The presented solutions are a response to the latest provisions being part of the VI Annex of the MARPOL Convention, which entered into force on 01.01.2015. These provisions constitute that sulphation of fuel used in Emission Control Areas (ECAs) may not exceed 0.1%. Then, to meet the requirements, the conditions of using heavy fuels for supplying diesel engines were presented. Individual solutions such as the use of low-sulphur fuels, exhaust gas scrubber assembly, and the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the technical side were shown. Besides, the advantages and disadvantages of each of them were also indicated. In the following part, the economic analysis of the selected ship was made. Its purpose was to evaluate economically in the assumed time of operation, and then select the optimal solution for a given unit. For the comparative analysis, the use of low-sulphur fuels was used; the assembly of the scrubber, as well as the adaptation of the unit to use liquefied natural gas (LPG). The article was finished with conclusions; the most important of them is that the use of fuels with reduced sulphur content is the most expensive solution for the selected ship. The cost of the remaining solutions is at a comparable level, but they require greater interference in the ship’s construction.
