Artykuł stanowi przegląd najczęściej stosowanych metod utylizacji siarkowodoru z gazów przemysłowych. W pracy skupiono się przede wszystkim na postępach w zakresie katalitycznego utleniania H2S oraz jego adsorpcji. Dane odnośnie współcześnie otrzymywanych katalizatorów oraz adsorbentów zostały omówione przez autorów oraz zestawione w tabelach.
The issue of utilization of hydrogen sulfide and the reduction of its emissions is a key issue and results from its extraordinary toxicity to both humans and the environment. Due to the strong corrosive properties of H2S, its removal is necessary in every industrial process in which it is present. As the most significant desulfurizing process is considered the Claus process. It is the most widely used method and it is estimated that around 90 - 95% of all recovered sulfur in the world comes from this process. However, the Clauss plant outlet gas typically contains 3 to 5% H2S, so further processes are still required to reduce the hydrogen sulfide concentration to regulations-acceptable levels. This is usually done by catalytic hydrogen sulfide oxidation. Alumina is used as the most common catalyst. Contemporary research in this area focuses on modifying the hierarchical pore structure of Al2O3 and testing obtained alumina as a carrier for active ingredients such as metals and metal oxides. An interesting solution proposed by modern researchers may also be the use of silicon and titanium oxides as carriers for vanadium oxide. An alternative solution to the catalytic combustion of hydrogen sulfide is chemisorption. Theoretically, chemisorption allows the achievement of much lower concentrations of hydrogen sulfide at lower operating costs. The most popular adsorbents include zeolites and activated carbons. Modern research in this field consists in obtaining composite materials based on zeolites or activated carbons. This is usually done by impregnating said materials with metal/metal oxides. It is worth noting that in the case of activated carbons, the interest of scientists also includes obtaining activated carbons from the most ecological materials, such as biomass. Given the growing interest in green materials in general, interest in biochars can be expected to increase in the future.

Celem niniejszej pracy było określenie, czy krenoterapia (kuracja pitna) za pomocą wód siarczkowo- siarkowodorowych słonych (WSSS) pochodzących z ujęcia "Zuzanna" z okolic Buska-Zdroju ma wpływ na zmianę stężenia glutationu (GSH i GSSG) we krwi pełnej. WSSS zawierają nie mniej niż 1 g związków siarki ogólnej w kilogramie wody leczniczej, a ich działanie zależy nie tylko od zawartości związków siarki, ale także od rodzaju i zawartości innych biopierwiastków. Liczne badania potwierdzają korzystny wpływ H2S na parametry antyoksydacyjne organizmu. W analizie stężenia GSH i GSSG we krwi wykorzystano metodę elektroforezy kapilarnej z detektorem UV. Badaniu poddano grupę 40 ochotników, zarówno kobiet jak i mężczyzn, w różnych przedziałach wiekowych. Kuracja za pomocą WSSS trwała 2 tygodnie. Otrzymane wyniki badań potwierdzają, że H2S występujący w WSSS zwiększa stężenie glutationu we krwi, a także dają uzasadnienie dla wykorzystywania krenoterapii w lecznictwie.
The objective of the study was to agree whether crenotherapy (drinking therapy) with sulfide/hydrogen sulfide (SHS) waters from "Zuzanna" spring located in the area of Busko-Zdrój leads to increasing of glutathione (GSH and GSSG) content in human blood. SHS waters contain at least 1 g of total sulfur per kilogram of water and a treatment effect also depends on other bioelements. A lot of earlier experiments confirmed positive influence of H2S on antioxidative properties of organism. The method employing capillary electrophoresis with UV detector for the analysis of glutathione in human blood was developed. The group of 40 volunteers consisted of both women and men, in different age range. The therapy with SHS waters lasted 2 weeks. We recently demonstrated that the administration of H2S in SHS waters increases GSH concentration in blood, and therefore crenotherapy could be used in therapeutics.

Numerous cytochrome P450 inhibitors have been described as effective modulators of cytochrome P450 isoforms activity in vitro. Their inhibitory efficiency may be considerably modified after in vivo application. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of oral administration of diallyl sulfide - a cytochrome P450 2E1 inhibitor and cimetidine - a cytochrome P450 2C6 and 2C11 inhibitor on rat serum concentration of phenacetin and its metabolite acetaminophen. Both inhibitors increased area under the curve (AUC04h) for phenacetin by 50%. Only cimetidine reduced AUC04h for acetaminophen indicating inhibition of O-deethylation activity. Quinidine - a cytochrome P450 2D subfamily and P-glycoprotein inhibitor did not change significantly phenacetin bioavailability. These results suggest that diallyl sulfide inhibits the deacetylation pathway catalysed by arylamine N-acetyl transferase. Beside cytochrome P450 1A2 other cytochrome P450 isoforms (2A6 and/or 2C11) are involved in phenacetin O-deethylation in rat.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is involved in blood pressure regulation. We evaluated hemodynamic effects of Na2S and morpholin-4-ium (4-methoxyphenyl)(morpholino)phosphinodithioate (GYY4137), H2S donors. GYY4137 is the most widely studied slow-releasing H2S donor, however, its ability to release H2S under physiological conditions is unclear. Hemodynamics were recorded in anaesthetized Wistar-Kyoto rats at baseline and after intravenous (IV) or intraperitoneal (IP) administration of either a vehicle (20% dimethyl sulfoxide), GYY4137 or Na2S. The stability of GYY4137 in buffers and in plasma was evaluated with nuclear magnetic resonance. The vehicle, as well as GYY4137, given IV did not affect mean arterial blood pressure (MABP), whereas Na2S produced a significant decrease in MABP. Similarly, IP given Na2S, but not GYY4137, lowered MABP. In the buffers at pH of 7.4 and 5.5 and in rat plasma no reaction of GYY4137 was found during 18 hours of observation. In contrast, rapid decomposition of GYY4137 occurred in buffers at pH 2.0. In conclusion, parenteral GYY4137 does not exert a hemodynamic effect in Wistar-Kyoto rats. This seems to be due to the high stability of GYY4137 at physiological pH. Therefore, it is likely that widely reported biological effects of GYY4137 are not H2S-dependent but may depend on GYY4137 itself. However, the H2S-dependent biological effects of GYY4137 may be expected in tissues characterized by low pH.

Control of odor removal and air pollution in wastewater treatment plants has become critical because of the negative impacts of invasive pollutants that are no longer limited to the working environment of sewage treatment plants, but extend to nearby residential areas when appropriate weather conditions are present. Residents of the city of Al-Nasiriyah in Iraq suffer from the the foul odors from the Jazeera Wastewater Treatment Plant in the city of Al-Nasiriyah, located in the province of Dhi Qar in southern Iraq. Therefore, efforts must be intensified to reduce the risks they pose to the ecosystem and the serious damage to human health. In this study, a biofilter system was designed to remove the odors emitted (hydrogen sulfide and ammonia gas) from the conventional activated sludge Al-Nasiriyah-Jazeera wastewater treatment plant. The biofilter odor removal system is designed for inlet screw pumping station, screening station, aerated grit chamber and parshall flume inlet. The result of the design of the biofilters, which meets the environmental requirements of Iraq according to the law of environmental protection No. 27 of 2009 and its instructions No. 3 of 2011 was the inlet screw pumping station (volume of buildings to be treated – 400 m3, number of changes per hour >5 n/h, design flow rate to be captured and treated – 2000 m3/h, H2S removal efficiency >98%, volume of substrate media – 24 m3, height of surface media – 1.4 m, and overall dimension (length – 8.9 m, height – 2.27 m, width – 2.13 m)), as well as the preliminary treatments screening station, aerated grit chamber and parshall flume inlet (volume of buildings to be treated (each biofilter) – 400 m3, number of changes per hour – 12 n/h, design flow rate to be captured and treated (each biofilter) – 5000 m3/h, H2S removal efficiency >98%, volume of substrate media – 60 m3, height of surface media – 1.4 m, and overall dimension (length 10.6 m, height 2.27 m, width m 2.13 m)).

Sulphidic tailings from Finnish Hitura nickel mine and Pyhäsalmi multi-metal mine were leached using sulphuric acid and bioleached. The aim was to recover minor amounts of valuable Cu, Ni, Zn and Mn. Both tailings consisted mainly of iron and magnesium-containing minerals and acid neutralizing minerals. The solution after chemical leaching tests contained mostly iron and magnesium, in Hitura up to 11 g/dm3 Fe and 38 g/dm3 Mg while in Pyhäsalmi 8–9 g/dm3 Fe and 4 g/dm3 Mg. Amount of these metals was 20–100-fold larger than amount of valuable metals, which were typically 100-300 mg/dm3. Problems in chemical leaching were high consumption of acid and poor selectivity. Bioleaching using iron and sulphur oxidizing bacteria was more selective towards the valuable metals. Both in leaching and bioleaching the high concentration of iron and magnesium in solution will make metals recovery challenging.

Complex sulfide ores are usually found as a mixture of various sulfide and gangue minerals, and froth flotation is the predominant method for the selective separation of sulfide minerals. Adherence and contact between sulfide minerals are inevitable during froth flotation, and galvanic interactions between sulfide minerals will occur because of differences in rest potentials. However, the effect of these galvanic interactions on the selective flotation of sulfide minerals have been rarely studied. In this work, the effect of the galvanic interaction between pyrite and sphalerite on the flotation behavior and surface characteristics of pyrite was investigated by micro-flotation tests, collector adsorption tests, electrochemical techniques and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) surface analysis. The micro-flotation tests indicated that the floatability of pyrite decreased in the pH range of 4.0 to 9.5 and increased under strongly alkaline pH conditions (pH > 10) due to the galvanic interaction. The collector adsorption results demonstrated that the adsorption capacity of the collector on the pyrite surface was significantly reduced because of the galvanic interaction between pyrite and sphalerite. The electrochemical measurements revealed that the decrease in the oxidation current of xanthates to dixanthogen was responsible for the decreasing adsorption capacity of the collector on the pyrite surface. The XPS results indicated that the formation of the $S_O_3^{2-}$ oxidation product on the pyrite surface decreased at a strongly alkaline pH due to the galvanic interaction. Therefore, pyrite floatability improved at an alkaline pH. These results consistently showed that the galvanic interaction between pyrite and sphalerite had an important influence on the floatability and surface characteristics of pyrite.

A method of formation of the sulfide-sensitive electrodes in the water-free superbasic solutions using the sulfided semiconducting CdSb monocrystals has been investigated. The effective range of the sulfide ions concentration was found and some other conditions were determined in order to ensure formation of the electrodes with the linear potential/sulfide concentration characteristics. Using the atom absorption spectrometry, the 6:1 molar ratio was found for the Cd and Sb atoms concentrations in the surface electrode film.

Polycrystalline Cadmium sulfide (CdS) films were deposited onto Corning glass substrates from alkaline solutions containing CdCl2, KOH, Na3C6H5O7 and CS(NH2)2 at different deposition times (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 min), bath temperatures (80 ±2 °C) and different concentration of the reactants. A comparative study was performed out on thin film via optical transmission and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. The results which reveal that the deposition time has a profound influence on the growth rate and band gap of the deposited layers. Diffraction data was used to evaluate the lattice parameter, grain size, average strain, number of crystallites per unit area and dislocation density in the film are calculated.

Selection of appropriate types of collectors as the main basis of flotation can have a significant impact on the process efficiency. In this regard, 2, 5-Dimercapto-1, 3, 4-thiadiazole (DMDT) was introduced as a new collector. And, its performance was compared with the prevalent collector C7240 (a mixture of 10–20 wt% sodium alkyl dithiophosphate and 20–30 wt% sodium mercaptobenzothiozole) and Sodium Isobutyl Xanthate (SIBX) on the flotation of copper sulfide ores. The effect of the reagent dosage (collector and frother) and pH level were studied using a design of experiment (DOE). Results showed effect of factors was significant in the case of copper recovery and grade of product. Consequently, the optimum range of the DMDT was 8 g/t at pH=11.8 in which the maximum grade and recovery were obtained. Also, the application of chemical agents also had a significant effect on flotation performance, so that the result of sequential addition of the collector indicated significantly improved recovery and grade. The use of a combination of collectors resulting in both physisorbed and chemisorbed surface products can also affect the froth structure and influence the final grade achieved. Accordingly, the best route of collector addition was DMDT at first, then C7240, and finally SIBX. Through this offer, the maximum recovery and grade of product were achieved 86.2% and 14.1% respectively. So, DMDT as a mixture of two others has a positive effect on the copper flotation efficiency.

Rozwój różnych gałęzi przemysłu oraz wydobywanie na coraz większą skalę kopalin powoduje wzrost stężenia produktów ubocznych w powietrzu atmosferycznym. Substancjami zanieczyszczającymi powietrze są m.in.: CO, CO₂, SO₂, SO₃, H₂S, tlenki azotu oraz związki pochodzenia organicznego. Celem niniejszej publikacji jest przegląd i ocena metod monitoringu stężeń siarkowodoru w powietrzu. Różne techniki instrumentalne, m.in. elektrochemiczne, chromatograficzne, spektrofotometryczne (mokre i suche), omówiono pod względem ich przydatności do monitorowania niskich stężeń siarkowodoru (H₂S), zbliżonych do jego progu zapachowego. Na podstawie przeprowadzonego przeglądu do badań H₂S w powietrzu wybrano metodę polegającą na pochłanianiu w wodnym roztworze octanu cynku oraz reakcji z N,N-dimetylo-p-fenylodiaminą i chlorkiem żelaza(III), przeprowadzono też wstępne badania walidacyjne. Zaadaptowana metoda umożliwia oznaczanie stężeń siarkowodoru w środowisku pracy i powietrzu atmosferycznym w stężeniach bliskich progowi zapachowemu. Med. Pr. 2013;64(3):449–454
The development of different branches of industry and a growing fossil fuels mining results in a considerable emission of by-products. Major air pollutants are: CO, CO₂, SO₂, SO₃, H₂S, nitrogen oxides, as well as compounds of an organic origin. The main aspects of this paper is to review and evaluate methods used for monitoring of hydrogen sulfide in the air. Different instrumental techniques were discussed, electrochemical, chromatographic and spectrophotometric (wet and dry), to select the method most suitable for monitoring low levels of hydrogen sulfide, close to its odor threshold. Based on the literature review the method for H₂S determination in the air, involving absorption in aqueous zinc acetate and reaction with N,N-dimethylo-p-phenylodiamine and FeCl₃, has been selected and preliminary verified. The mercury-containing tailing waste from public gold mines in Indonesia is generally deposited on soil without treatment. This research aimed at determining the amount and composition of mercury species in the tailing, and testing the effect of sulfur and sulfide on mercury stabilization. Samples were collected from a tailing pile at different depths in a public gold mine in Kulon Progo, Indonesia. The samples were characterized according to the mercury concentrations and Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test. Mercury speciation was carried out using nitrogen gas flow into tailing samples, which were placed in three test tubes. The released mercuric species was entrapped in KCl and KmnO4 solutions. The mercury stabilization was carried out using sulfur and sodium sulfide. TCLP test was performed to the stabilization products. The mercury concentrations were measured using a mercury analyzer. The results showed that the mercury in the tailings were dominated by elemental Hgo, the concentrations of which in the tailing piles of 30, 60, and 90 cm depths were 74.7%, 71.6%, and 76.5% respectively. Those of ionic Hg2+ form were 25.3%, 28.4%, and 23.5%, respectively. Additions of sulfur powder and sodium sulfide solution produced stable black-colored mercury sulfide. When compared to sulfide, sulfur was more recommended for stabilizing mercury in the tailing waste.

Opis:
This study aimed to show the flotation behavior of a nickel sulfide ore in a cyclonic flotation column. The flotation experiments were carried out using a sample of nickel sulfide ore obtained from a mineral processing plant of China. Representative samples collected from the feed, concentrate, tailing, and circulation middling were sieved using a cyclonic particle analyzer to collect different size fractions for analysis. The function of the column cyclonic zone of was evaluated by comparing the quality of tailing and circulation middling. The flotation results showed that the concentrate with Ni grade of 1.78% and recovery of 65.56% was obtained under given test conditions. The content of main sulfide minerals and coarse particles in the circulation middling was higher than that in the tailing. The results indicated that, unlike conventional cyclone classification, separation achieved in the cyclonic zone of the column was not dependent on the particle size and density. Sulfide minerals with good floatability were easily captured by bubbles and moved toward the center of the column, even if these particles were coarser and heavier.

In this paper, the mechanism of interaction between hydrogen sulfide ions and malachite was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations and time of flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). The DFT calculations showed that HS− adsorption on the malachite (−201) surface was stronger than that of S adsorption resulting from the higher number of electron transfers in the solution which accelerated the sulfidation reaction rate. Density of states (DOS) analysis showed that the near Fermi level was jointly contributed to by the Cu 3d, O 2p, O 2S, and S 3P orbits after adsorption of HS− on the malachite (–201)surface. It was found that the 2p orbital of O and the 3p orbital of S overlapped, indicating that S not only reacted with Cu, but also with O. The TOF-SIMS detected S− and CuS2− fragment ion peaks in the 0−150 m/z negative segment of mass spectra. TOF-SIMS also showed that copper sulfide films of certain thicknesses were formed, demonstrating the effectiveness of hydrogen sulfide sulfidation in flotation processes.

This article presents the results of research intended to obtain a complex alumina-iron reagent based on natural diatomite and industrial products of alumina production for wastewater purification from hydrogen sulfide. The material composition of the obtained samples using X-ray diffraction analysis was determined. The results of interaction research in the NaFeO2 – H2S – H2O system at 25°С are given. The results of research on wastewater purification from hydrogen sulfide in Almaty city with the use of ferric sulfate, ferric chloride, sodium ferrite and a complex reagent containing iron at the content of 5.1 mg/l H2S in the initial sample of wastewater were presented.
