    Opis:
    In the poems of Julian Tuwim that were taken into consideration during the research 27 words from the semantic field of the word ‘gold’ occurred in 110 of text implementations. Gold was used in order to create diversified elements of the world, such as nature, human, appliances, food or even abstract ideas. The poet made use of well-known culturally connotations of the colour gold and used it in harmony with current trend. In Tuwim’s poetry gold is very often associated with ennoblement, very rarely with irony. Colour gold intensified also the poetry of images while it was the component of a great amount of stylistic devices like metaphors, personifications, periphrasis or comparisons.

    The linguistic exponents of the colour red in Julian Tuwim’s poetry are both primary and secondary names of the colour red, with the latter dominated by expressions referring to the prototypes of fi re and blood. For the sake of creating poetic images of human appearance, his physiology and emotions Tuwim used conventional connotations of the colour red. However, what draws attention is the poet’s proneness to the description of morbidity and ugliness. Additionally, the colour red and its synonymous names were used for the linguistic creation of political events and the description of nature. What is interesting is the phenomenon of frequent occurrence of the colour discussed in the autothematic poems, in which the colour refl ects unusual fervency of the poetic affl atus and the toil of creative work.

    W artykule podjęte zostało zagadnienie szerokiego rozumienia słowa „ziemia”, jego wieloznaczności w utworach poetyckich Karola Wojtyły – Jana Pawła II. Metoda literackiej analizy i interpretacji pozwoliła na wyznaczenie pola semantycznego oraz na ukazanie funkcji, jaką pełni motyw ziemi w prezentowaniu stosunku Autora do rzeczywistości materialnej, do urodzajności gleby, do przyrody, ojczyzny, ziemskiego globu oraz kosmosu, w końcu do rzeczywistości duchowej, z którą rzeczywistość materialna łączy się w człowieku, od czasów Wcielenia i Odkupienia w szczególny sposób. W odczytaniu sensów ideowych przydatna okazała się analiza indywidualnego stylu poetyckiego Autora, zwłaszcza sposobów ewokacji krajobrazów. Metoda przywoływania wybranych elementów przyrody odróżnia go od poprzedników, od tworzących w dwudziestoleciu międzywojennym oraz rówieśników – młodych poetów wojennego pokolenia.
    This article deals with the widely understood motif of “earth” and its polysemy in the poetic works of Karol Wojtyła / John Paul II. The method of literary analysis and interpretation has allowed for the discerning of a semantic field and to demonstrate the function of the motif of “earth” in the author’s outlook on material reality, his attitude towards the fertility of the soil, nature, fatherland, the Earth, the cosmos and, finally, spiritual reality, combined, in man, with material reality in a particular way, through the Incarnation and Redemption. The analysis of the individual poetic style, especially the method of evoking landscapes, has proved to be a particularly useful interpretational tool, and helps distinguish Karol Wojtyła from his predecessors, interwar poets, and contemporaries – the young poets of the war generation.

    Przedmiot artykułu stanowi zagadnienie jakości przekładu w ramach serii translatorskiej. Autorka wychodzi od przypomnienia rozważań teoretycznych na temat serii i od potencjalnie wpisanego w ten koncept oczekiwania wzrastających walorów kolejnych ogniw. Zbadaniu fluktuacji jakości w rzeczywistej serii przekładowej posłużyło pięć polskich tłumaczeń Pieśni miłosnej J. Alfreda Prufrocka T.S. Eliota. Analizie poddano cztery istotne dla poetyki poematu aspekty oryginału i przekładów oraz zestawiono rezultaty w poszczególnych sferach. Celem pracy jest nie tyle krytyka przekładów, co próba wymodelowania zmian jakościowych, jakim podlegały różne aspekty poetyki utworu wraz z przyrastaniem serii.
    The paper is an attempt to explore the interrelation between the notions of quality and seriality in literary translation. The point of departure is provided by theoretical considerations on translation series and by an expectation of quality increase to some extent inscribed in this concept. With a view to mapping quality trends in an actual translation series, five Polish renditions of T.S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” are surveyed. Four aspects important for the poem’s poetics are investigated comparatively and the results are then formalized. The aim is not to assess the ‘excellence’ of the target texts, but rather to map ‘quality patterns’ that can be observed in the particular aspects of poetics as the series develops.

    Opis:
    The translation of Blaise Pascal’s „Pensées”, especially confrontation with this work on the stylistic and rhetorical level, is a challenge that calls for talent and workshop skills. Among the European translators of the work, we find an unknown author who had translated “Pensées” into Polish. The translation was found in the collections of the Library of the Theological Seminary in Sandomierz. The manuscript is likely to have been written among the Radom piarists in the second half of the eighteenth century. It was based on the Paris edition of “Pensées” in the so-called Port-Royal composition in its version after 1678 and before 1761. The style of the anonymous translator is not absolutely pure. On the one hand he writes briefly and with reticence, avoiding exaggerated ornaments. He clearly sought to render the style and model of Pascal’s sentence in his translation (his syntax and word order). It happens, however, that he gives in to moralistic persuasion and in some more difficult places he aspires to clarify the intentions of the French author, which leads to redundant repetitions. The poetic images preserved in the translation are not so plastic and suggestive as in the original. It seems that the translator fails to perceive in it some values that enrich the discourse and therefore he weakens their expression. In many places he depreciates also rhetorical ornamentation and withdraws the baroque style. His strategy of translation is therefore in the line of strictly eighteenth-century stylistic and rhetorical tendencies by which to shape expressions.
