This essay is a case study about linguistic mechanisms that affect an emigrant’s life. Strach jest uczuciem towarzyszącym człowiekowi zawsze, niezależnie od epoki oraz kultury, w której żyje. W swojej pracy chciałbym, opierając się na badaniach Bronisława Malinowskiego, przeanalizować czego i kogo boją się tubylcy z obszaru Nowej Gwinei oraz jak budowane są lęki wyspiarzy. W swoich rozważaniach skupię się w sposób szczególny na dwóch istotach, czarownikach bara’u i czarownicach mulukwausi, albowiem poza straszeniem tubylców pełnią oni również ważne funkcje społeczne w swoich wspólnotach. Zbadanie demonologii obszaru Nowej Gwinei będzie dla mnie również punktem wyjścia do zderzenia kultury wyspiarzy z kulturą europejską, w celu wyciągnięcia pewnych inwariantów, wspólnych kulturze pojmowanej w sposób atrybutywny prawideł i mechanizmów dotyczących strachu. Inspiracją metodologiczną dla tej pracy jest strukturalizm w rozumieniu Claude’a Lévi-Straussa.
Fear is ever-present in man’s history feeling, regardless of their époque or culture. In my paper I would like to examine what and whom the natives of the New Guinea fear as well as how the fears of the Islanders are constructed, basing my reflection upon Bronislaw Malinowski’s research. In my research I will focus particularly on two beings, sorcerers bara’u and witches mulukwausi, for they perform important civil functions in their communities. Researching upon New Guinea’s demonology will be a step further in my attempt to compare the Islander’s culture and the European culture, in order to bring out some invariant rules and mechanisms concerning fear, mutual to attributive culture. This paper has been inspired by Claude Lévi-Strauss’ structuralism.

This study is based on the assumption that literary interpretations are explicitly or implicitly influenced by some philosophical system as a general system of thought. In this way, different literary interpretations often hide more general philosophical ideas. Nevertheless, this study tries to show that the interpretation of the given work of art need not be conceived only as application of the general philosophical approach; interpretation of the work of art, as argued in this essay, can in significant ways also show the philosophical approach itself. The subject of this study is the case of Henry James’s short story “The Figure in the Carpet.” This essay includes an analysis of how Tzvetan Todorov, Joseph Hillis Miller, Wolfgang Iser and of Pascale Casanova interpret the story and how they use its dominant image of a “figure in the carpet” for illustration of their own theoretical and philosophical approach.

Pojawiające się projekty alternatyw dla współczesnej hegemonicznej organizacji władzy (rozumianej jako porządek państwowy, kapitalizm, nowoczesność, biowładza itp.) są konstruowane na fundamentach zarówno kulturowo znanych, jak i obcych. Artykuł jest próbą rozpoznania potencjału i ograniczeń „umiaru”, który pozwoliłby na wytworzenie organizacji alter-państwowych. Wychodząc od analizy Rzeczpospolitej Obojga Narodów jako bytu niepaństwowego, autor wskazuje na bardzo ważną rolę „umiaru” w jej mechanizmach wspólnotowych. Rozumiejąc je zgodnie z deleuzjańską koncepcją systemów maszynowych, śledzi je za pomocą narzędzi teoretycznych: sieci wyobrażeniowej oraz pamięci formulicznej i fantasmagorycznej, które pozwalają na określenie potencjalnej pracy „umiaru” we współczesnych projektach alternatywnych organizacji władzy.
The emerging projects of alternatives to the contemporary hegemonic organization of power (recognized as the order of the State, capitalism, modernity, biopower, etc.) are constructed on both culturally familiar and alien foundations. The article is an attempt to recognize the potential as well as the limitations of “moderation” that would allow generating alter-State organizations. Starting from the analysis of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth as a non-state, the author points out the key role of “moderation” in its community mechanisms. Understanding them in accordance with the Deleuzian concept of machine systems, the author traces them with theoretical tools: the imaginary network and formulative and phantasmagoric memory, which specify the potential work of “moderation” in contemporary projects of alternative organizations.

Prezentowany artykuł podejmuje temat funkcjonowania poetyki w codziennej rzeczywistości szkolnej, przede wszystkim zaś skupia się na jej obecności w szkole ponadgimnazjalnej. Autor, opierając się na własnych doświadczeniach zauważa, że poetyka jedynie pozornie znajduje się w szkole w dobrej sytuacji, tak naprawdę jest podporządkowana schematycznej metodzie strukturalnej, która bardziej zniewala niż sprzyja pogłębionemu spotkaniu z tekstem. Autor artykułu proponuje zatem, by nauczyciel polonista nieustannie podejmował trud korygowania obowiązującego systemu i nie poddawał się narzuconym schematom myślowym i egzaminacyjnym.
The article deals with the subject of the application of poetics in everyday school life and it essentially focuses on its presence in upper secondary schools. On the basis of his experience, the author makes a general observation that poetics is only apparently in a good condition at school, whereas it is actually subject to the schematic structural method, which constrains, rather than facilitates, an in-depth reading of a text. In consequence, the author suggests that a Polish teacher should constantly make an effort to correct the present system, not yielding to the overimposed patterns of thinking or examinations standards.

The article sets out with the theory of “aesthetics of reality” (created by Maria Gołaszewska) and its related method of transferring artistic structures onto non-artistic reality. The resulting construct, which is dubbed a para-artistic structure, becomes the theoretical basis for the aesthetic experience of nature. The so-called “formalization”—a procedure which consists in inserting nature into artistic frameworks—makes natural phenomena acquire a pretense of artwork. Nature as a picture becomes a landscape, while terms connected with the aesthetics of nature gain artistic qualities, enabling use of such notions as picturesque or kitsch. The methodological proposal by Gołaszewska is subsequently compared with the critical perspective of environmental aesthetics.

Structuralism has recently moved center stage in philosophy of mathematics. One of the issues discussed is the underlying logic of mathematical structuralism. In this paper, I want to look at the dual question, namely the underlying structures of logic. Indeed, from a mathematical structuralist standpoint, it makes perfect sense to try to identify the abstract structures underlying logic. We claim that one answer to this question is provided by categorical logic. In fact, we claim that the latter can be seen—and probably should be seen—as being a structuralist approach to logic and it is from this angle that categorical logic is best understood.

Afazja to zaburzenie komunikacji językowej u osób dorosłych, które przebyły incydent neurologiczny uszkadzający centralny układ nerwowy. Zainteresowanie tym zaburzeniem wśród naukowców wielu dziedzin wzrastało z uwagi na pandemiczny przyrost chorych dotkniętych udarami mózgu, które są główną przyczyną rozpadu kompetencji językowej. Badaniom medycznym, gerontologicznym, psychologicznym towarzyszy rozwój metodologii lingwistycznej, która — zgodnie z postulatem Romana Jakobsona — opis patomechanizmu zaburzenia rozpoczyna od języka. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi przegląd najważniejszych metodologii lingwistycznych XX wieku pod względem ich wkładu w rozwój współczesnej myśli afazjologicznej. Kryterium nadrzędnym przyświecającym prezentowanym analizom stała się ocena ich przydatności w zrozumieniu języka w rozkładzie.
Aphasia is a communication disorder of adults that results from damage to the central nervous system. It gains an increasing interest among scientists due to the increasing number of patients with stroke. Along with medical, psychological and psychiatric research we observe the development of linguistic methodology which begins to describe the pathogenesis disorder with an analysis of the language system — as requested by Roman Jakobson. This paper provides an overview of the most important linguistic thought: structuralism, generativism and cognitivism and their input in understending the aphasia. Overriding criterion that guided the present analysis is to evaluate their usefulness in understanding the disintegration of the language system.

In Polish literary studies methodology, Kleiner’s status as entirely marginal, if not anachronistic, can be justified only on one condition, namely if we overlook the study Content and form in poetry (“Przegląd Warszawski” 1922, r. 2, vol. 2, pp. 323–333), for it can be read as the rejected cornerstone of Polish immanent structuralism. Due to the ambiguity of the term “structuralism”, it is necessary to define its meaning here: it will be determined by the historical context, i.e. the Course in General Linguistics (first edition: 1916). Adopting Janusz Sławiński’s terminology, we may add that it is a rejected cornerstone of immanent (“unconscious”) structuralism not a formulated one.

The article is devoted to a popular presentation of two important styles of thinking concerning the problem of existence of mathematical objects: Chihara's linguistic constructivism, and Hellman's modal structuralism. According to Chihara, mathematical statements should be interpreted as referring to certain linguistic construction; according to Hellman, mathematics is the science of possible structures. The motivations and main ideas are examined (without going into technical details), and the similarities and differences between these two viewpoints are highlighted.

This paper is dedicated to the lexical issues of the Polish language of the interwar period approached from the angle of language ethics. It represents the stream of structuralist research and has been prepared in accordance with the synchronic method. The author concentrates on describing selected aspects of the language of newspaper headlines. The object of the research paper is the lexical corpus of 106 issues representing 5 annals of a radical antisemitic weekly titled „Pod Pręgierz” (“In the Pillory”). The outcome of the performed analysis of the vocabulary of headlines has shown that the dominance of the lexical linguistic measures which negatively evaluate the Jewish community fully fits the lexis of „Pod Pręgierz” into the phenomenon of language aggression.

Wychodząc od usystematyzowania hellerowskiej tezy o matematyczności przyrody, niniejsze studium poświęcone głównie będzie pokazaniu i krytycznej ocenie racji, wedle których Heller desygnuje teorię kategorii jako matematyczne środowisko szczególnie predestynowane dla wyartykułowania tej tezy. Kluczowe w tym kontekście będzie wskazanie, co uprawnia go do wprowadzenia mającej istotne ontologiczne znaczenie koncepcji pola kategorii i utożsamienia go z polem racjonalności. Ostatecznie stanie się możliwe lepsze zrozumienie, w jakim sensie w kontekście sformalizowanych teorii fizycznych Heller operuje pojęciem apofatyzmu filozoficznego, który wydaje się trafnie ujmować specyfikę jego poglądów na ontologiczne zobowiązania tych teorii i gdzie być może zbliża się on do niebezpiecznych myślowych pułapek. W swojej apofatycznej postawie Heller pozostaje blisko pierwszoplanowych postaci współczesnej fizyki i noblistów, Alberta Einsteina czy Rogera Penrose’a: fizyka nie mówi o tym, jaka rzeczywistość jest, ale pozwala stanąć na drodze do rzeczywistości.
Starting with the systematization of Michael Heller’s thesis of the mathematicity of the Universe, the inquiry carried out in this article will be devoted to the presentation and the critical analysis of why the category theory can be designated as the most suitable mathematical environment to articulate this thesis. The key task will be to show what motivates Heller to introduce an ontologically pregnant concept of the field of categories and to equate it with the field of rationality. Finally, it will become more transparent in what sense Heller utilizes the concept of the philosophical apophatism in the context of the formalized physical theories. Heller shares his apophatic attitude with such prominent figures of the theoretical physics as Albert Einstein and Roger Penrose: physics does not say what reality is but it places a physicist on the road to reality.

W artykule przedstawiam specyficzną propozycję lektury Logiki sensu, którą – luźno nawiązując do filozofii Kanta – nazywam architektoniczną. Lektura architektoniczna polegać ma na jednoczesnej analizie teorii filozoficznej oraz formalnej konstrukcji dzieła. Chociaż technikę taką można próbować odnieść do wielu klasycznych już pozycji, to przypadek Logiki sensu okazuje się wyjątkowy – zasugerował ją bowiem sam autor, gdy każdy z trzydziestu czterech rozdziałów nazwał serią, pojęcie „serii” zaś uczynił kluczowym dla teorii. Logika jest więc celowo książką samozwrotną, co przekłada się między innymi na to, iż układ rozdziałów i akapitów, charakter pojęć filozoficznych, a nawet trudności z czytaniem znajdują uzasadnienie w treści. Ostatecznie okazuje się, że Logika sensu jest skonstruowana jak układanka czekająca na złożenie zgodnie z subiektywnymi pytaniami i problemami Czytelnika. Celowo nie przedstawiam żadnej konkretnej propozycji lektury, wykładam jedynie narzędzia do jej„obsługi”. W tym sensie artykuł stanowi prolegomena do właściwej lektury Logiki sensu.
The article presents a specific proposal of reading the Logic of Sense, which – referring to the philosophy of Kant – I call architectural. Architectural reading consists in the simultaneous analysis of philosophical theory and the formal structure of the work. Although this technique may be referred to a number of classic works, Logic’s case appears to be unique, as suggested by the author when he names each of the 34 chapters ‘series’ as a pivotal concept for the theory. ThereforeLogic is deliberately self-reflexive, which means that the structure of chapters and paragraphs, the nature of philosophical concepts, and even the difficulty in reading are justified by contents. Finally, it appears that Logic is constructed as a puzzle waiting to be solved in accordance with subjective questions and problems of the reader. I intentionally do not present any particular proposal of reading, I merely try to provide a ‘strategy’. In this sens, the article is a prolegomena to the proper reading of the Logic of Sense.

Is it possible to talk of mental patterns underlying aesthetic reflections, and has the constant recurrence of particular ideas in the area of aesthetics some deeper explanation? Structural aesthetics of music is an authorial research conception which enables interpretation of phenomena from the area of history of music aesthetics, and in this way provides its systematised picture. The conception uses the ideas of structural linguistics: binary phonological opposition and the historicalliterary process in the approach of Jan Mukařovský. The article also contains an example of using this conception in relation to the aesthetics of antiquity (sophists, Plato, Aristotle), Descartes and impressionism.

Opis:
The subject of this work is an in-depth analysis of the structure of the built environment as a system of organised relations. Three elementary aspects expressed in binary oppositions were distinguished: interior - exterior (formal aspect), individual - collective (social aspect), variable - permanent (dynamic aspect). These aspects reflect the diverse psychophysical needs and existential states of a human being. The reorganisation of a habitat is a change in the internal relationships of these categories in a specific region and spatial scale. A healthy environment can be defined as one that balances polar categories at each level of the analysis. Reforms and re-evaluations in the built environment can be interpreted as attempts to restore balance, as illustrated with examples from the history of architecture and urban planning. The results of the work contribute to the general theory of the built environment, essential for the proper design process in a wide spectrum of spatial scale.
Przedmiotem pracy jest pogłębiona analiza struktury środowiska zbudowanego jako system zorganizowanych relacji. Wyodrębniono trzy elementarne aspekty wyrażone w opozycjach binarnych: wnętrze - zewnętrze (aspekt formalny), indywidualne - kolektywne (aspekt społeczny), trwałość - zmienność (aspekt dynamiczny). Aspekty te odzwierciedlają zróżnicowane potrzeby psychofizyczne oraz stany egzystencjalne człowieka. Reorganizacja habitatu jest zmianą wewnętrznych relacji ww. kategorii w określonym regionie i skali przestrzennej. Zdrowe środowisko można określić jako takie, które równoważy biegunowe kategorie na każdym poziomie analizy. Reformy, a także przewartościowania w środowisku zbudowanym są próbami przywrócenia jego równowagi, co zilustrowano przykładami z historii architektury oraz urbanistyki. Wyniki pracy stanowią przyczynek do ogólnej teorii habitatu i prawidłowego procesu projektowego w szerokim spektrum skali przestrzennej.
