Opis:
Striga hermonthica, is a major constraint to sorghum production in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study was conducted to assess the potential role of intercropping sorghum with different legumes for control of striga. Two types of cropping system (simultaneous and relay) and two row arrangements (single and double alternate) were used for intercropping with groundnut and soybean. The experiment included a standard treatment of sole crop of sorghum, grou dnut and soybean. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications for two cropping seasons of 2014 and 2015. From the result intercropping of sorghum with soybean and groundnut has significantly reduced the striga counts per plot as compared to sole sorghum. Lowest number of striga count (29.5) at vegetative stage and (19.7) at heading stages was recorded from simultaneous cropping of sorghum-soybean in double alternate row arrangements. The combined analysis result showed that sorghum grain yield and its components were significantly (P ≤ 0.05) affected by intercropping with groundnut and soybean. Significantly higher (P < 0.05) grain yield of sorghum (1.9 t ha-1) was obtained from single alternate row arrangement of sorghum-groundnut in relay intercropping. The study also demonstrated sorghum yield increment by 29.1% over the control sole crop. Higher yield was obtained from soybean intercropped with sorghum compared to groundnut due to higher competition for growth resources with sorghum. Land equivalent ratio of the system indicates that in both seasons of soybean and groundnut intercropped with sorghum resulted in a significant greater LER. The mean LER (1.9) of the system indicates that intercropping sorghum with this legume crops gave yield advantage and land productivity.

Opis:
The paper compares the description of the fight with the striga in Andrzej Sapkowski’s short story The Witcher to its translation into Bulgarian by Vasil Velchev. While the short story is from the first book of the Witcher series in terms of story chronology, its translations into foreign languages pose questions on the level of translatability of fantasy stories and their differences in other cultures due to linguistic, historical and literary traditions. In the case of Sapkowski’s short story such challenge to translators is offered by medieval settings and knightly realia typical for the genre and for Polish national history, however lacking in terms of comprehensive parallels in Bulgarian culture. The analysis reveals several groups of disproportions between the original text and its Bulgarian translation.

Opis:
Parasitic weeds especially Phelipanche aegyptiaca decrease severely the production of canola. This study evaluated the effect of intercropping different wheat genotypes with canola on Phelipanche aegyptiaca growth. Ten wild wheat genotypes with different ploidy levels including TRI11712, TRI19322, TRI18664, TRI19652, TRI565, TRI15593, TRI12911, TRI11554, TRI17606, TRI7259P and seven cultivated bread wheats, namely: Falat, Chamran, Alamut, Baiat, Kavir, Sepahan, Alvand in addition to a canola cultivar called Zarfam were studied. The results revealed that intercropping of canola with wheat could significantly reduce broomrape growth depending on the type of wheat genotype. A significant genetic variation of allelopathic activity in wheat was observed, indicating the contribution of multiple genes conferring the allelopathic trait. TRI565 and TRI12911, TRI15593, TRI18664, TRI19652, TRI17606, TRI19322, and TRI7259 genotypes showed strong inhibitory effects and can be considered as potential allelopathic genotypes to suppress broomrape. The inhibitory potential of wild wheat genotypes was stronger than cultivated wheat genotypes. Alamut, Baiat, Alvand, Sepahan, and TRI11712 possessed strong stimulatory effects on broomrape germination. Such genotypes may be valuable as trap crops for depleting the Egyptian broomrape seed bank.

Opis:
On-Farm trials were conducted from July to November during the 2009 and 2010 cropping seasons, at Tarka, Benue State, Nigeria to evaluate the effects of intercropping maize and soybean on striga control, grain yields and economic productivity. The treatments consisted of sole maize, sole soybean and the intercrop of maize and soybean, replicated three times in a randomized complete block design. The results obtained showed that intercropping maize and soybean significantly (P ≤ 0.05) reduced striga shoot count by 55.9 % and 56.1 % respectively, in 2009 and 2010 compared to that produced on pure maize plots. Number of affected maize plants, lodging score of maize and infestation rate were lower for intercropping than for sole maize plots. The severity level was also recorded lower for intercropping compared to that recorded for pure maize stands, where severity level is in the range of high to very high. Though, soybean yield was reduced by intercropping, however, soybean and maize intercropping system increased maize grain yield, total intercrop yield, land equivalent coefficient greater than 0.25, land equivalent ratio values greater than one (LER > 1), higher total intercrop values and monetary equivalent ratio greater than 1.00, indicating yield and economic advantages. The implication of study showed that intercropping maize and soybean can be adopted by farmers as an efficient cropping system strategy to reduce striga infestation, increase maize yield and give greater economic productivity.
