This note presents a method of how the bed shear stress caused by breaking random waves on slopes can be estimated. This is obtained by adopting the Sumer et al. (2013) bed shear stress formula due to spilling and plunging breaking waves on hydraulically smooth slopes combined with the Myrhaug and Fouques (2012) joint distribution of surf similarity parameter and wave height for individual random waves in deep water. The conditional mean value of the maxima of mean bed shear stress during wave runup given wave height in deep water is provided including an example for spilling and plunging breaking random waves corresponding to typical field conditions. Another example compares the present results with one case from Thornton and Guza (1983) estimating the wave energy dissipation caused by bed shear stress beneath breaking random waves

The following discussion concerns modelling of fracture in steel plates during an impact test, in which both target and striker are manufactured from the same material, high-strength high-hardness armour steel – Mars® 300. The test conditions (3 mm thick targets, projectiles with different nose shapes at impact velocity lower than 400 m/s) result in severely damaged components, which results in an analysis of stress states showing material failure. Numerical analyses are performed using two material models: the Johnson-Cook approach, as traditionally used in impact simulations, accounting for the effect of stress triaxiality, strain rate and temperature and for comparison, a simulation by means of the stress triaxiality and Lode angle parameter-dependent Hosford-Coulomb model, also incorporating the effect of the strain rate on a fracture initiation. The aim of the study is to analyse the mechanisms of penetration and perforation observed in the armour steel plates and validation of the modelling approaches.

Opis:
The paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the stress field and selected triaxiality parameters near the crack tip for C(T) specimen dominated by the plane strain state using the finite element method. It includes some theoretical information about elastic-plastic fracture mechanics, the basics of the FEM modeling and presentation of the numerical results. The FEM analysis includes calculations with large strain assumptions. The influence of the external load and crack length is discussed. Additional elements of the paper are a qualitative assessment of the size of plastic zones and the crack tip opening displacement.

Opis:
Application of the linear six-parameter shell theory to the analysis of orthotropic tensegrity plate-like structures is proposed in the paper. A continuum model of a tensegrity plate with the self-stress state included is used. The tensegrity module, which is based on 4-strut expanded octahedron modules with additional connecting cables is proposed as an example. Different planes of support of the structures are taken into account and thus different reference surfaces of the plate model are considered. The self-stress state and some geometrical parameters are introduced for parametric analysis.

This work aimed to underline the dynamics of photosynthetic and oxidative stress parameters of ‘Matador’ and ‘Andromeda’ spinach species after short-term 1 and 2 kJm–2 UV-B radiation effect. When plants reached 3–4 leaves growths stage, the exposure to 1 kJm–2 and 2 kJm–2 UV-B radiation was done once for 68 and 136 minutes, respectively. The photosynthetic and oxidative stress parameters were determined 2, 24, 48 and 72 hours after exposure. The stimulating effect of UV-B emerged on the 3rd day after exposure. The positive effect of UV-B was more pronounced for ‘Matador’. The highest DPPH radical-scavenging capacity and the highest concentration of α-tocopherols were detected 24 hours after 2 kJ UV-B exposure, but the decrease in photosynthetic rate was the highest as well. Meanwhile, on the 3rd day after 1 kJ UV-B exposure, the indicators of oxidative stress of ‘Matador’ decreased, and the photosynthetic rate increased. This study highlights that low UV-B radiation acts as an eustress, by awaking positive changes in photosynthetic and oxidative stress parameters of spinach.

We show that the global non-linear stability threshold for convection in a double-diffusive couplestress fluid saturating a porous medium is exactly the same as the linear instability boundary. The optimal result is important because it shows that linearized instability theory has captured completely the physics of the onset of convection. It is also found that couple-stress fluid saturating a porous medium is thermally more stable than the ordinary viscous fluid, and the effects of couple-stress parameter (F ) , solute gradient (S f ) and Brinkman number (Da ) on the onset of convection is also analyzed.

Opis:
Salt stress is known as one of the most severe abiotic factors limiting the plant production all over the world. In this study, three additives: (i) supplemental Ca (5 mmol L–1) to nutrient solution, (ii) foliar application of micronutrients (Fe, Mn and Zn at 60, 160 and 110 mg L–1, respectively), and (iii) combination of both of them were evaluated aiming to reduce the negative impact of salt stress on tomato plants cultivated in a soilless culture and improve the internal quality of fruits. The obtained results show that salinity reduced vegetative growth and physiological parameters, fruit yield and its components, and even more lowered fruit market classification of tomatoes. Salinity treatment reduced most of essential macro- and micronutrients in tomato fruit, whilst Na content was increased. Tomato productivity and fruit quality were ameliorated under saline conditions by increasing Ca into nutrient solution and applying a foliar application of micronutrients. A combination of both additives ranked the first to alleviate the adverse effects of salinity on tomatoes, followed by solo supplemental Ca into saline nutrient solution. On the other hand, the internal fruit quality of antioxidant compounds, such as vitamin C, lycopene, α-carotene, β-carotene and lutein as well as acidity, total soluble solid and dry matter percent, were increased under saline conditions.

This study was aimed at evaluating the effect of sublethal doses of glyphosate on physiological parameters of a common ornamental plant Mexican marigold (Tagetes erecta). The herbicide was applied in the following doses: 720 g ⋅ ha–1 (standard field dose), 144 g ⋅ ha–1, 28.8 g ⋅ ha–1, and 14.4 g ⋅ ha–1, in the form of a spraying treatment of plants in a specialist spraying chamber. The net assimilation rate and leaf greenness index were then determined. Herbicide application in the sublethal doses, i.e. below 720 g ⋅ ha–1, caused disorders in both analyzed physiological parameters of plants. The glyphosate dose of 144 g ⋅ ha–1 elicited transient disorders in the leaf greenness index. In turn, the use of the lower doses (28.8 g ⋅ ha–1 and 14.4 g ⋅ ha–1) caused a short-term increase in the net photosynthesis rate in the plants which was accompanied by a decreased value of the leaf greenness index. Study results demonstrated the effect of sublethal doses of glyphosate as a stress factor in parameters associated with the process of photosynthesis in plants.

This paper provides a comparative analysis of selected parameters of the geometric constraints for cracked plates subjected to tension. The results of three-dimensional numerical calculations were used to assess the distribution of these parameters around the crack front and their changes along the crack front. The study also involved considering the influence of the external load on the averaged values of the parameters of the geometric constraints as well as the relationship between the material constants and the level of the geometric constraints contributing to the actual fracture toughness for certain geometries.

An attempt has been made to examine the effects of magnetohydrodynamic couple stress fluid in peristaltic flow with porous medium under the impact of slip, heat transfer and wall properties. The expressions are obtained for temperature, coefficient of heat transfer and velocity. Increasing concentrations of chromium caused reduction in growth, chlorophyll contents and mineral mutrients of bhendhi. At increasing concentrations of chromium, all the attributes were found to be reduced. Chromium is one of the toxic elements discharging from tannery industry. The long disposal of tannery effluent to the agricultural land causes serious damages in the soil texture; reduce the growth of microorganisms and agricultural crops. Large areas of Vellore district of Tamilnadu was seriously affected by the tannery effluent irrigation to the agricultural land. The present study was conducted to identify the phytotoxic effect and physiological changes of Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) Moench under the treatment of different concentrations of chromium solutions (2.5, 5, 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mg/l). The result shows that there was a gradual reduction in the morphological parameters (root length, shoot length, fresh weight and dry weight). Similarly the photosynthetic pigments (Chlorophyll and carotenoid) and biochemical parameters such as protein, amino acid, and sugars were also gradually decreased with increasing concentrations of chromium.
