Opis:
Emotional intelligence (EI) is conceptualized as a personality trait or an ability. Most of conducted studies on EI-coping association referred to trait emotional intelligence. Therefore, the role of ability emotional intelligence is less clear and need to be further studied. The present study examined the relationship between two EI abilities (emotion recognizing and emotion understanding) and stress coping strategies in adolescent men and women. The data were collected from 1033 Polish high school students (520 men and 512 women) aged 18-20 years (Mage = 18.46 years). Coping strategies were assessed using the COPE inventory and emotional abilities were measured using the Emotional Intelligence Scale – Faces (SIE-T) and the Emotion Understanding Test (TRE). The results supported the existence of an association between EI abilities and coping strategies. The analyses of the interaction effects revealed the moderating role of gender on some of the relationships between EI abilities and coping strategies.

A critical situation that parents of children with disabilities have to deal with often surpasses their adaptive and financial abilities, which is significant for their well-being. The family often fights for keeping the balance, but can often do that in a way that blocks the development of the whole system or individual development of people that belong to it. The aim of research presented in this report is an analysis of functioning of balanced and unbalanced family systems with disabled children. The research included the perception and life situation of mothers, who out of all family members are the most prone to experiencing raised stress levels and exhaustion as the ones taking direct care of a disabled child. The participants of the study were mothers (n = 70, age: M = 41,5; SD = 8), children and teenagers with disability. The method used in the study was interview with the use of custom survey and questionnaire methods: Family Rating Scales (Margasiński, 2013) – Polish adaptation of Olson’s FACES IV scale and Endler and Parker’s Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (in Polish adaptation CISS; Strelau et al., 2005). The analyses also included the specifics of each child’s disability (level of disability, level of the child’s independence, requirements related to rehabilitation treatments). The results of own research suggest that mothers from balanced families in comparison to women from unbalanced families rate their systems as more coherent and flexible, more often use a task oriented stress coping strategy, have higher income and are more happy with their financial and living conditions. However, the profile of a “healthy” family is closer to a coherent-rigid one that to a fully balanced system type.

Background. The present study examined factors influencing the choice of coping strategies in response to stress caused by the pandemic. The aim of the study was the analysis of the selection of coping strategies chosen by university students stratified based on whether they had previously contracted coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Material and methods. A variant of the COPE questionnaire was used to examine the choice of coping strategies among 876 students of Krasnoyarsk (Russia) during the lockdown. Fifteen coping strategies were assessed in 27.9% students who had COVID-19 and 72.1% who did not have COVID-19, taking into account sex differences. Results. Problem-oriented and active coping strategies were common in both groups. The most common scenarios are active handling strategies (median 6.0). In both groups, respondents rarely singled out (median ≤4.0) the use of psychoactive substances, denial of the situation, and conversion to religion. Females more often than young males used concentration on emotions as a coping strategy. Females who experienced COVID-19 refuse to believe what happened, and choose to seek social support for emotional reasons. Conclusions. The risk of infection and the transmitted illness engendered coping strategies associated with active actions. Passive coping strategies were used less frequently. The tactics used to select appropriate coping strategies for those who have not been ill and who have recovered are similar irrespective of sex.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Dokonano analizy wyboru strategii radzenia sobie ze stresem u 876 studentów uczelni w Krasnojarsku (Rosja) w czasie lockdownu, z wykorzystaniem wariantu kwestionariusza ankiety COPE. Wyniki. Charakterystyczne dla obu grup były strategie radzenia sobie zorientowane na problem i aktywne działania. Najczęstsze to scenariusze aktywnego radzenia sobie (mediana 6,0). Wnioski. Ryzyko zakażenia i przenoszącej się choroby aktywizowały u badanych strategie radzenia sobie związane z działaniem aktywnym. Bierne strategie były stosowane rzadziej. Stwierdzono zbieżność taktyki dotyczącej wyboru strategii radzenia sobie ze stresem zarówno wśród studentów, którzy chorowali jak i tych, którzy nie przeszli zakażenia COVID-19, bez względu na płeć badanych.

Objectives: The purpose of the study has been to describe functioning of single and mothers in relationships (married or in informal relationships) at work and verify if the declared degree of work satisfaction differentiates types of behavior at work and stress coping strategies in both groups of mothers. Material and Methods: The study was conducted on equal samples of single mothers (N = 186) and mothers from 2-parent families (N = 186) using Latack Coping Scale that measures work-related stress coping strategies, the AVEM (Arbeitsbezogenes Verhaltens- und Erlebensmuster – Work-Related Behavior and Experience Pattern) questionnaire, and a survey. It showed similarity between the studied groups in terms of the measured variables. Results: There were considerable differences between single and married mothers in terms of support seeking strategies. The interaction of work satisfaction and the type of motherhood significantly differentiates (p = 0.03) the avoidance strategy of resignation. Conclusions: That strategy of resignation was more frequently used by single mothers with lower work satisfaction, who were distinctly different from those whose work satisfaction was higher, and from the mothers in relationships (married or in informal relationships) (regardless of the level of their work satisfaction). Opis:
INTRODUCTION There so far have been no psychological studies on stress coping strategies used by prelingually deaf individuals. Assessment of the efficacy of coping in confrontation with stress is of key importance in the case of persons with a handicap, such as prelingual deafness, and enables one to propose them an adequate offer of hearing and speech (re)habilitation, including psychological intervention. The aim of this study was to compare prelingually deaf adult cochlear implant (CI) users with hearing individuals in terms of stress coping strategies taking account of CI experience, the use of sign language and socio-demographic variables. MATERIAL AND METHODS Study was conducted by post and involved 79 persons with prelingual deafness aged 19–62 years, using CIs implanted after 18 years of age, for whom the response ratio was 63.3%, and hearing persons. An inquiry form and Brief COPE questionnaire were used. RESULTS Prelingually deaf CI users more seldom than hearing persons use active coping, also they less often use psychoactive substances, while they more often use behavioral disengagement. Sex, age, marital (partnership) status and work significantly influence the coping strategies used. Longer CI experience is related to using self-blame and turning to religion more seldom. Individuals who use sign language significantly less often use venting as a stress coping strategy. CONCLUSIONS Stress coping strategies used by prelingually deaf CI users differ significantly from those used by hearing persons as well as postlingually deaf CI users. It is therefore not expedient to treat CI users as a homogenous group irrespective of the deafness etiology, particularly in planning rehabilitation management and in research.
Wykorzystano ankietę informacyjną i kwestionariusz Mini COPE.

Introduction and objective. Adapting to gynaecological cancer is the problem of accepting and coping with the disease and its consequences. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between stress intensity and strategies for coping with stress and psychological adaptation to disease in women diagnosed with gynaecological cancer. Materials and method. The study was performed on a group of 102 women diagnosed with gynaecologic malignancy. The mean age of patients was 56.1 (SD ±10.75) years. Three self- designed questionnaires were used to carry out the study: Scale of Perceived Stress (PSS-10), Multidimensional Inventory for Measuring Coping with Stress (Mini-COPE) and the Scale of Mental Adaptation to Cancer (Mini-MAC). Statistical significance was set at p <0.05. Results. In more than half of the women surveyed, the severity of stress experienced during the last month was high. Women with a malignant illness significantly differed (p<0.001) in the styles of coping with the disease, preferring a constructive style (M=43.5; SD±5.76) rather than a destructive style (M=21.7; SD±5.28). The highest median values were obtained by positive revalidation (M=21.9; SD±3.01) and fighting spirit (M=21.6; SD±3.47) strategies. The most prominent indicator of predicting a constructive style of coping with cancer was the coping strategy described as Positive Revalidation (ßeta=0.38; R²=0.41); whereas an Acceptance strategy was a predictor of a destructive style (ßeta=-0.30; R²=0.31). Conclusions. Most women facing gynaecological cancer experience a high level of stress, and try to use active strategies to deal with the disease. The results indicate that there is a need to offer special psychological care to oncologically diagnosed women.

When faced with a chronic disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, the patient attempts to cope with the stressful situation by applying coping strategies. The main aim of rheumatoid treatment is not only improving health but also increasing the quality of life. The research objective was to determine the relationship among socio-demographic factors, duration of the disease and its associated ailments, attitude to the disease, self-assessment of one’s knowledge of RA, and the application of coping strategies in stressful situations by women with rheumatoid arthritis. The study involved 193 patients of the Clinic of Rheumatology and Systemic Connective Tissue Diseases, and the Rheumatology Unit of the Specialist Outpatient Clinic of the Independent Public Teaching Hospital No. 4 in Lublin, from November 2016 – June 2017. The Coping Orientations to Problems Experienced Inventory (COPE) Questionnaire and an author’s Original Questionnaire were used in the study. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey’s range test were applied for statistical analysis. A p-value<0.05 defined the statistical differences. Analysis was performed using the commercial SPSS Statistics 19 software (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). The respondents usually use instrumental social support (11.5±1.7), focus on and vent emotions (11.4±1.9), use emotional social support (11.4±1.8), employ active coping (11.4±2.1) and positive reinterpretation and growth (11.2±1.8), and least often rely on their sense of humour (5.5±1.4) or use alcohol or drugs (5±1.1). The factors which determine the types of strategy used are age, education, the duration of the disease, ailments experienced, and attitude towards the disease. Those respondents who declared a greater knowledge of RA more often applied positive reinterpretation and growth, and more rarely used alcohol or drugs. In the treatment and rehabilitation processes it is important to reinforce in the patient positive expectations for the treatment, seek advantages and benefits in one’s present health status, and educate patients about the disease, its therapy and appropriate coping strategies.

Stress is an integral part of our lives. It also applies to our childhood. That is why it is so important to know how children cope with stress (how they learn coping strategies) and to equip them with the skill set to cope constructively with stressful situations throughout life. This article describes strategies for coping with stress that are characteristic for children at the end of early school education. They have been identified in the course of my own research aimed at characterizing child stress and relate to a fragment of research activities aimed at 8- and 9-year-old children. The research established that in some children the developmental process of coping with stress has started: children look for, investigate, and think how to cope with difficulties. In this struggle, however, they focus on people ho could be a source of support for them in coping with stressful situations. Among children’s stress coping strategies, an important role is also played by emotionally focused strategies, which are aimed at reducing negative emotions and arousing positive emotions.

The study was conducted in Ukraine during the onset of COVID-19 pandemic. The sample contained 232 individuals. The aim was to study emotional experiences and their connection with coping strategies in the context of gender differences. The research was based on the concept of differential emotions, and on the understanding of the accumulation strategies as a dynamic process, which is determined by personal prepositions and situational factors. Measures used in the study were the Differential Emotions Scale and the Ways of Coping Questionnaire. The growth of negative experiences and stress at the beginning of the pandemic among men and women was confirmed. We described the differences regarding emotions and coping strategies. Women use emotion-focused strategies of social support, strategies of positive reappraisal of the situation, and avoidance, the acceptance of responsibility among women is associated with negative emotions. We found that women more frequently use two or more coping strategies compared to men. A different emotional basis of coping strategies, expressed at high levels of tension among men and women, was revealed. The defined features of coping behavior among men and women may help to determine the main goals for the development of preventive and psychotherapeutic interventions.

Opis:
Background: Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak was a sudden unknown stressor that could cause fear among people. Police officers were in the front lines, often unknowingly in direct contact with infected individuals, thus fear of getting infected (i.e., fear of COVID-19) could be higher in this population. Police students are preparing for the job of police officers and how they cope with a sudden unknown situation could be of importance for job performance and their mental health if such a situation occurs. This study aimed to investigate the association of perceived stress and coping strategies with fear of COVID-19 in police students. Material and Methods: Perceived stress scale-10, Brief COPE, and Fear of COVID-19 (FSV-19) were administered to 340 police students (female = 183 [53.82%] and male = 157 [46.18%]). Correlation analysis was applied to test the association between perceived stress, all dimension of coping and fear of COVID-19. Multivariate analysis of variance was used to investigate between-gender differences. For mediating and moderating effect of coping primary coping style were used. Results: MANOVA reviled that significant differences occurred in perceived stress, 3 primary coping styles and fear of COVID-19 based on a gender. Stepwise regression analysis extracted the most significant predictors of fear of COVID-19. Perceived stress was the strongest predictor in general and in both genders. Denial and self-distancing were significant coping subscales in males, while humour and denial were significant in females. Conclusions: Perceived stress and coping strategies that students used to deal with the situation moderately defined their fear of COVID-19 outbreak, with perceived stress being the strongest predictor.
