The main objective of the presented study was to propose a new taxonomy of learning strategies for the digital age. The revised taxonomy of Oxford’s SILL (1990) was implemented in a nationwide questionnaire to display the picture of strategy use, investigate relationships between particular strategy types and elicit learners’ preferences on strategy instruction. The data was processed statistically with SPSS 20 package. Results confirm high reliability of SI-LLE, indicate relatively strong relationships between particular strategy groups, where higher education institution, year of studies and teaching experience have a statistically significant effect of similar strength on strategy awareness.

Statement of the problem. In market conditions, the investment activity of enterprises requires diversification of objects and methods of investment. This helps to minimize investment risks, stabilize cash flows in space and time, as well as to increase the guarantee of successful implementation of investment to the entities, which take indirect participation in investment processes. The problem consists in the absence of scientifically grounded methodological regulations regarding the selection of methods of the investment strategies implementation. Consequently, most of the investment decisions are based on an intuitive approach which reduces the possibility of opportuneness and completion in the implementation of purposes established by investors’.

The purpose of this article is to present the results of research concern setting of motivated and cognitive strategies in learning goals achieving by students with and without dyslexia in secondary school. The study included 110 students studying in secondary schools in the Mazovian region. The study used questionnaire Goal Orientations and Learning Strategies Survey (GOAL-S) M. Dowson and D.M. McInerney (2004) in the Polish adaptation of A. Dłużniewska and I. Kucharczyk. Detailed analysis of the results indicates the relationship between the kind of motivation and choice of cognitive and metacognitive strategies of learning. The current study allows to extract factors that are important in achieving success in academic achievements of students with and without special educational needs.

The study critically examined the influence of focus Strategies on customer relationship of SMEs. The objective of the study is to investigate the degree of influence that focus strategy has on Customer Relationship of SMEs. Series of questions were asked using the questionnaire adopted by the researcher and hypotheses was proposed and tested in the study. To determine the influence of focus Strategies on customer relationship of Small and Medium Enterprises, a sample of 125 were drawn. The data were analyzed using simple frequency tables and regression analysis. The study found out that focus strategy would affect customer relationship of small and medium enterprises. The study recommended that focus Strategies should be adopted in a way that would boost the performance of the SMEs in general and enterprises should make sure that their management adopts focus strategy for organizational efficiency and performance.

The aim of the present paper is to explore the problem of Vocabulary Learning Strategies (VLS) used by philology students. In the first part of the paper theoretical issues connected with VLS are analysed, in the second the results of research conducted at one state university is presented to show what VLS are selected by the students and what factors influence the choice. The paper also aims at showing the role of vocabulary learning during the teaching/learning process of the students of philology.
Celem artykułu jest zaprezentowanie problematyki strategii przyswajania słownictwa przez studentów filologii. W części pierwszej przedstawiono najważniejsze aspekty zagadnienia, w drugim wyniki badań empirycznych, których celem było ustalenie, jakich strategii używają studenci filologii i jakie czynniki determinują ich wybór.

A dynamic development of the option market on the one hand and finance engineering on the other, have opened the way to construction of a lot of option strategies aiming at hedging, speculations or arbitrage. The article discusses the option strategies that are most frequently used by investors. Among them there are the simplest strategies consisting in buying and selling of uncovered options as well as more advanced complex ones. These include covered strategies and spread and combination constructions, addressed first of all to experienced investors. When characterizing particular strategies special attention is paid to the following questions: in what way and when a given construction should be used, and what are the consequences of using it. The article presents both directed strategies, that is ones aiming at a change of the underlying instrument, exemplified by the bull and bear spread, and strategies based on volatility of the given instrument, like the butterfly spread.

The paper addresses the concepts of metacognition and (reading) strategies, the origin of which is usually traced back to the 1970s. However, the paper argues that conscious awareness, which Vygotsky introduced as early as the 1930s, is another term for metacognition. Further, according to Vygotsky, “… conscious awareness enters through the gate opened up by scientific concept” (Vygotsky 1987: 191, italics added), meaning that metacognitive skills develop in instruction, as a function of student’s work with academic concepts. This hypothesis, however, seems to be ignored by contemporary, mainstream researchers. For example, an influential study like PIRLS, contradictory to Vygotsky’s hypothesis, assumes that students already at the end of the elementary stage apply metacognitive skills – included reading strategies – in order to construct meaning in reading.

Although the ability to speak is usually seen as a key manifestation of learners’ ability in the target language they are attempting to master, research has not given ample attention to strategies that can be employed to enhance this skill. In fact, the bulk of such empirical investigations has mainly focused on communication strategies that are reactive devices, predominantly used to overcome difficulties in successful conveyance of meanings and messages, and even this line of inquiry has been neglected in recent years. The study reported in this paper aims to partially bridge this gap by examining the speaking strategies that advanced learners of English used in the performance of two communicative tasks, differing in the extent to which the participants were required to make a contribution to their successful completion. The data collected by means of open-ended questionnaires that were administered immediately after the completion of the two tasks yielded crucial insights into the nature of the speaking strategies and the ways in which the communicative goals inherent in task type influenced the choice of speaking strategies.

Disparate goals that learners might have in learning second or foreign language pronunciation and the scant classroom time that can be dedicated to teaching this target language subsystem dictate that learner autonomy is of vital importance in this case and adept use of pronunciation learning strategies (PLS) can be viewed as key to the development of this attribute. Surprisingly, research on these strategies is scarce, mainly focusing on the identification and classification of PLS, diverse instruments are used for data collection and the findings are inconclusive. The paper provides an overview of the available research on PLS with respect to their identification, learners’ preferences concerning their use, factors mediating the application of PLS, and the effects of strategies-based instruction in this area. An attempt is also made to assess research of this kind and to suggest how it could be taken forward to provide insights that would be of value to practitioners.

This paper presents the concept of a systemic approach in teaching the fundamentals of strategic management. Basing on the traditional typologies of organizations strategies the general map of strategies was proposed aiming to introduce students to the problems of strategy selection. As the tool for ordering the map of strategies the SWOT/TOWS matrix has been selected. The part of the particular strategies has been taken from typologies of Porter, Bowman and Ansoff. Basing on these typologies two versions of the map of strategies were developed. The first one includes 9 specific strategies and the other – 13. The strategies are grouped into four groups: aggressive strategies, conservative ones, competition ones and recovery ones. The developed maps of strategies allow more flexible analyzing of the strategy selection process and the relationship between them and their evolution.
В статье представлена концепция системного подхода в обучении основам стратегического управления. Опираясь на традиционные типологии стратегий организации, автор предложил общую карту стратегий, задача которой – помочь студентам понять сложность проблематики выбора детальной стратегии действий. В качестве инструмента упорядочения карты избрана матрица SWOT/TOWS. Зато часть детальных стратегий почерпнута между прочим из типологий Портера, Броумана и Ансоффа. На базе упомянутых типологий разработаны две версии карты стратегий. Первая включает 9 детальных стратегий, а вторая 13. Стратегии сгруппированы в четыре категории: агрессивные стратегии, консервативные стратегии, стратегии конкуренции и корректировочные стратегии. Разработанные карты стратегий позволяют более наглядно анализировать процедуры выбора стратегии, а также взаимосвязи между ними и их эволюцию.

Foreign language classes at university should enhance not only knowledge of foreign languages but with the use of different methods, should also develop skills of communication strategies, which are very important to compensate for deficits in communication. These strate-gies are indispensable for language learners irrespective of their level of proficiency. The objective of the study described in the present pa-per is to explore the communication strategies used by Polish students at different levels of knowledge of Italian. Data was collected by two types of questionnaires, one including two open-ended questions. The other was based on a Likert-scale method which examined the fre-quency of usage of avoidance strategies, verbal and non verbal strate-gies, as well as the strategy of transfer. Emphasis was placed on the re-lationship between the use of types of communication strategies and students’ level of proficiency. In the final part the author recommends types of lexical exercises which should be practised during classes to help students to develop their communicative skills.

Despite the fact that the last few years have witnessed a growth of interest in pronunciation learning strategies (PLS) (e.g. Petersen 2000; Pawlak 2008a; Wrembel 2008), this line of inquiry still remains neglected and is in urgent need of further empirical investigation. This is because the available research findings are primarily confined to the identification and description of the strategic devices that learners draw upon in their attempts to learn the various segmental and suprasegmental features, with only a handful of studies addressing such issues as the factors influencing PLS choice and use, the impact of proficiency levels or the value of strategies-based instruction in this area. Another problem is related to the use of diverging research methodologies and data collection tools, which renders it impossible to make comparisons between various studies, view their results in a cumulative way and arrive at conclusions concerning the effectiveness of specific strategies used by learners.What appears to be indispensable to drive the field forward and ensure that research findings will be comparable across studies and provide a sound basis for feasible pedagogic proposals is to draw up a classification of PLS and design on that basis a valid and reliable data collection tool which could be employed to measure the use of these strategies in different groups of learners, correlate it with individual and contextual variables, and appraise the effects of training programs. In accordance with this rationale, the present paper represents an attempt to propose a tentative categorization of pronunciation learning strategies, adopting as a point of reference the existing taxonomies of strategic devices (i.e. O'Malley and Chamot 1990; Oxford 1990) and the instructional options teachers have at their disposal when dealing with elements of this language subsystem (e.g. Kelly 2000; Goodwin 2001). It also introduces a research instrument designed on the basis of the classification that shares a number of characteristics with Oxford's (1990) Strategy Inventory for Language Learning but, in contrast to it, includes both Likert-scale and open-ended items. The findings of a pilot study which involved 80 English Department students demonstrate that although the tool requires considerable refinement, it provides a useful point of departure for future research into PLS.

Cyber-attacks affect not only our daily lives, but also national security by influencing elections, the economy, and communication. This article is an attempt to give an answer to the question included in the topic “How to build a coherent cybersecurity strategy?”. The first part of the article addresses the paradigmatic issue of cybersecurity. The author shows the differences and relations between cybersecurity and cyber defense. At this point, the author presents a systems approach to the nation security and related it to the cybersecurity. The second part of the article has been dedicated to visualize the need of coherent cybersecurity strategy by analyzing data related to cybersecurity. In the end, the author proposes actions to achieve cybersecurity. This has been done based on existing analyzes of cybersecurity strategies and systems approach to the issue of the cybersecurity.
