Opis:
A method of tensile testing of materials in dynamic conditions based on a slightly modified compressive split Hopkinson bar system using a shoulder is described in this paper. The main goal was to solve, with the use of numerical modelling, the problem of wave disturbance resulting from application of a shoulder, as well as the problem of selecting a specimen geometry that enables to study the phenomenon of high strain-rate failure in tension. It is shown that, in order to prevent any interference of disturbance with the required strain signals at a given recording moment, the positions of the strain gages on the bars have to be correctly chosen for a given experimental setup. Besides, it is demonstrated that - on the basis of simplified numerical analysis - an appropriate gage length and diameter of a material specimen for failure testing in tension can be estimated.

Opis:
The electronic structures and optical matrix elements of CdSe semiconductor quantum dots of near cubical, hemispherical and cylindrical shape embedded in ZnSe were calculated. Bulk Hamiltonian matrices were obtained using the empirical tight binding method including spin-orbital coupling and relativistic effects. All quantum dots were simulated in reciprocal space and the number of atoms in each quantum dot was kept nearly equal for the comparison purpose. An adjacency matrix was produced which indicates the adjacencies of unit cells and the bulk Hamiltonian was included for each adjacency point in order to obtain the quantum dot Hamiltonians. The strain effects, valence band offset and spin orbital coupling were included in the calculations. The quantum dot Hamiltonian was solved to obtain the highest and lowest eigenvalues from which the electronic structure was obtained. Then eigenvalues near integers ranging from the lowest eigenvalue to highest eigenvalue was generated for the point.

Opis:
Corrosion resistance of the X4MnSiAlNbTi27-4-2 and X6MnSiAlNbTi26-3-3 type austenitic steels, after hot deformation as well as after cold rolling, were evaluated in 3.5% NaCl solution using potentiodynamic polarization tests. A type of nonmetallic inclusions and their pitting corrosion behaviour were investigated. Additionally, the effect of cold deformation on the corrosion resistance of high-Mn steels was studied. The SEM micrographs revealed that corrosion damage formed in both investigated steels is characterized by various shapes and an irregular distribution at the metallic matrix, independently on the steel state (thermomechanically treated or cold worked). Corrosion pits are generated both in grain interiors, grain boundaries and along the deformation bands. Moreover, corrosion damage is stronger in cold deformed steels in comparison to the thermomechanically treated specimens. EDS analysis revealed that corrosion pits preferentially nucleated on MnS and AlN inclusions or complex oxysulphides. The morphology of corrosion damage in 3.5% NaCl supports the data registered in potentiodynamic tests.
