Opis:
The army outpost on Biğān Island on the Euphrates (in Iraq) was excavated in the early 1980s, but it is only now that a thorough examination of the material from the Roman layers has been completed, giving grounds for a revisiting of issues related to the site’s chronology, function and role in the frontier zone between Rome and the empires of the East. The archaeological sources, mainly pottery and coins, are discussed in light of the army post’s island location and its role in interregional and long-distance trade. Of greatest interest in the pottery category are the transport/storage vessels that seem to belong to the same family as the broadly discussed so-called Mesopotamian Torpedo Jars.

Opis:
The characteristics of alternative fuel for diesel: dimethyl ether (DME) and an analysis of the potential to reduce emissions of toxic compounds by the engines when running on this fuel have been presented in this work. Basic types of design solutions of gas supply and control systems, possible for use in internal combustion engines with DME supply have been also presented. The paper presents a study of the legislation and an analysis of the feasibility of the system storage and fueling DME on board small vessels.

Opis:
The complex of the Nekloni monastery in Fayum (Deir el-Naqlun) was explored in yet another three seasons of fieldwork by a team from the Polish Centre of Mediterranean Archaeology. On the plateau, investigations were carried out in the southern part of Building D (Rooms D.50 and D.41–D.44), northern part of Building E, western part of the 12th–13th-century Cemetery A and Building I. A 6th-century Hermitage EE.06 in the Naqlun hills to the east of the plateau was cleared, yielding a collection of study material, especially pottery from the kitchen unit dated to the second half of the 5th–6th century. The assemblage from the kitchen unit was composed of cooking pots and saucepans; tableware was represented by goblets, plates and bottles (qullae), while storage/ transport vessels mainly by amphorae. Products of Egyptian workshops were mixed with imported wares of North African and Eastern Mediterranean origin (including Cyprus, Cilicia and Gaza).

hand-made storage vessels
Opis:
In the Early Roman Period, apart from the Przeworsk culture settlement covering southern Lesser Poland, there also occur single settlements attributed to the Púchov culture. Ceramic materials of both above-mentioned cultures contain small percentage of large-size forms used for storing supplies. They differ from other pot-like forms in manufacture technology, morphological details as well as in the limited degree of applied decoration. The paper presents results of detailed typological and technological analysis of fully preserved storage vessels, supplemented by the studies on the vast collection of specimens preserved in fragments. Collected observations show that storage vessels with flange-shaped rims appear in the Early Roman Period on the settlements of the Púchov culture, majority of which were functioning already in the late La Tène period, whilst the forms with S-shaped rim are younger (B2 phase) and occur rather further to the east, on the territories occupied by the Przeworsk culture. The typological analysis reveals strong similarity between hand-made storage vessels from the close of the La Tène period and the Early Roman Period vessels, confirming their genetic connections. In the discussed period, these forms undergo transformations that are similar to those which take place in the Púchov culture in its core territories.
