Opis:
Current distributions of Swiss stone pine mostly cover the mountain regions of Europe (Alps and Carpathians). Easternmost distribution of this species is located in western Ukraine. Due to environmental fragmentation in Eastern Carpathians and competition with Norway spruce and other species, marginal populations of Swiss stone pine create isolated island, where other species are not able to cope with harsh conditions. Still, Pinus cembra L. play an important role for soil-formation and soil-protection in high elevations. The evidence of recent reduction in the area of Swiss stone pine raises the question whether the introduction of this species at lower altitudes can be successful? According to the studies conducted on reciprocal transplant experiments, Swiss stone pine population from higher elevation are able to profit in low elevation sites. Thus, parallelly with gene conservation activity, the possibilities of assisted migration should be recognized for this species.

Opis:
Mutational witches’ brooms (WBs) in conifers are widely used in landscaping. However, there have been few WB morphology and anatomy investigations. The needle structure of witches’ brooms and normal crown (NC) in Pinus sibirica clones was studied, using light microscopy technique. The aim was to compare the needle structure in WBs and NC and to reveal the effects of the mutation on the needle traits. Three WB and NC pairs of clones from the same trees were used in the study. WBs in the parental trees were characterized by different density in the affected part of the tree. In all pairs, WB needles were shorter and thinner than in NC. In contrast to NC needles, WB needle length was positively correlated with resin duct total area and width of endodermis cell. Thus, the affected needles had a changed structure, and the effect of the mutation was determined by mutation expression.

Opis:
Stone pines growing in the Radziejowa range exhibited a regular growth and development. At the age of 10 years, young trees developed regular, conical crowns. An increase in number and length of lateral shoots ensured development of the assimilatory apparatus. The vitality of stone pine was high. The trees characterised even by 5−year−old needles. Stone pine is found to be the admixture species stabilising the growth of plantations located at higher elevations of the upper mountain zone beyond the natural range of distribution of this species.
