Opis:
Introduction: Recent reports have revealed that neuroinflammation and apoptosis in brains affected by cerebral palsy could be therapeutic targets. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) exerts anti-inflammatory and antiapoptosis effects and stimulates the proliferation of neural stem and progenitor cells in the brain. Purpose: To assess the efficacy and safety of G-CSF treatment in children and adolescents with CP. Materials and methods: Six patients with spastic tetraplegia CP aged 3-15 years were enrolled in this study. Five patients had GMFCS (Gross Motor Function Classification System) level at V, three children had epilepsy, and three had severe mental retardation. We used the gross motor function measure-66 (GMFM-66) to assess motor function.GCSF (5μg/kg/body/day) was administered subcutaneously for five consecutive days during the four months. The parents also evaluated the physical and mental development of their children. Results: We observed improvement in motor function in patients with CP on the GMFM-66 scale. Parents reported improvement in behavior, speech development, and a decrease in spasticity in children with CP. G-CSF therapy was well-tolerated. No side effects were observed during the study. Conclusions: Our preliminary report suggests that G-CSF treatment improves motor and mental function in patients with CP. Further studies are needed to confirm these observations

Introduction: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a genetic disorder of increased bone fragility and low bone mass. OI type IV. Materials and methods: We examined the safety and effectiveness of a low dose of analog granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) in a 15-year-old girl OI type IV. G-CSF 5 μg/kg was given subcutaneously, for 5 days/month for 3, 6 and 12 months. Laboratory tests, including blood, biochemical tests were performed, in addition to clinical examination. Results: Clinical examination revealed an increase of muscle strength in the upper and lower limbs between base line and day 6 and 12 months. We found no serious adverse events. Leukocyte levels remained below 38,000/μL. Low dose G-CSF was safe and well tolerated by the patient. Conclusions: A significant increase in muscle strength in this patient may indicate beneficial effects of G-CSF factor in this disorder. These results are inspiring and warrant further studies.

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is a glycoprotein that stimulates the bone marrow to produce granulocytes and stem cells and release them into the blood. Recent studies demonstrated the presence of CSF-receptor (G-CSFR) system in the brain and spinal cord, and their roles in neuroprotection and neural tissue repair, as well as improvement in functional recovery. G-CSF exerts neuroprotective actions through the inhibition of apoptosis and inflammation, and the stimulation of neurogenesis. This review highlights recent studies on the potential use of G-CSF in cerebral palsy.

We examined the safety and effectiveness of a low dose of analog granulocyte-colony stimulating factor in a 15-year-old boy with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy. The onset of disease was noted at 12 years of age. The physical examination noted general muscle atrophy more pronounced at left side of the body. He was able to walk 300 meters within 6 minute walk test. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor 5 μg/kg was given subcutaneously daily for 5 days/month for 1, 2, 3, 6 and 12 months. Clinical examination, laboratory tests including blood, biochemical tests, and CD34+ cells were performed. A significant increase of muscle strength in the lower and upper limbs between baseline, and after 3 months of treatment, after 6, and after 12 months was found. He was able to walk 480 meters within 6 minutes after 12 months. Electromyography demonstrated increase of amplitude in the examined in upper and lower limbs after six months compared to baseline. Leukocyte levels remained below 25000/μL. CD34+ increased significantly at day 5 of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor admini-stration. It was safe and well tolerated by the patient. A significant increase in muscle strength in this patient with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy after 3 months of treatment, after 6, and after 12 months since the first treatment course was completed may indicate beneficial effects of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor in this disorder.

The article addresses the issues of the stimulating (intervention) function of the betting and gambling tax. It attempts to answer the question whether the intention of the Polish legislator was to ascribe this function to the betting and gambling tax, and if so, to what extent such assumptions were reflected in the legal provisions and the resulting norms. The first part of the article identifies the basic levels of the performance of the stimulating function of the betting and gambling tax in theoretical terms. The second part presents the functions that were attributed to the lottery monopoly and the taxes that affected the organisation of gambling games in the interwar period and in the Polish People’s Republic. The third part of the article analyses the provisions of the Act on Games and Mutual Wagering as well as the Gambling Law in the context of the extent to which these regulations were expected to have an interventional effect at the drafting and adoption stage.

Opis:
Anaemia is one of the most significant factors that lead to deteriorated quality of life and limited therapeutic possibilities in cancer patients. When treating chronic anaemia associated with a neoplastic disease, one should consider RBC transfusion or the use of recombinant human erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESA). In 2007, following the golden era of ESA at the beginning of the 21st century, the American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a number of warnings related to the use of ESAs. They concerned, i.e., the increased risk of cancer progression, probability of venous thromboembolism (VTE), and reduced overall survival times. That has led to a decrease in the use of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents in clinical practice. Results of the most recent studies and meta-analyses indicate the possibility of using ESA in patients undergoing palliative myelosuppressive chemotherapy, with haemoglobin levels < 10 g/dl, and without absolute iron deficiency, in order to avoid red cell concentrate transfusions, and with the hope to improve the patient’s quality of life.

We consider a model of fishery management, where n agents exploit a single population with strictly concave continuously differentiable growth function of Verhulst type. If the agent actions are coordinated and directed towards the maximization of the discounted cooperative revenue, then the biomass stabilizes at the level, defined by the well known “golden rule”. We show that for independent myopic harvesting agents such optimal (or ε-optimal) cooperative behavior can be stimulated by the proportional tax, depending on the resource stock, and equal to the marginal value function of the cooperative problem. To implement this taxation scheme we prove that the mentioned value function is strictly concave and continuously differentiable, although the instantaneous individual revenues may be neither concave nor differentiable.

Opis:
The article focuses on an encounter with Shakespeare in an unusual place, a novel set in medieval India, where Shakespeare is viewed and assessed by an Indian audience, by Indian listeners, through principles of classical Indian art and thought. Such an encounter creates a sense of incongruity, an incongruity that is cultural, philosophical and aesthetic, but at the same time leads to startling perspectives and new and fresh insights. The novel does not privilege one culture over another but the listeners do and we have a brilliant piece of comic writing where the humour derives from the one-sidedness of their perceptions, their “occidentalism”, their easy assumption of the superiority of their belief system over the “other”. The Silver Pilgrimage thus provides not only a stimulating perspective on two Shakespearean tragedies from the point of view of Sanskrit poetics and Indian thought, but also a gentle expose of the limitations of this point of view, and the cultural chauvinism that lies behind it.

Many theories (Comers’ SDM, change theory, the Ohio Collaborative) stress that parents’ engagement is key for a child’s achievement and identified their role as co-teachers, co-leaders, co-workers, and co-supporters in their children’s development. Siegel and Hartzell’s (2006) emphasized that parents must be mindfully present during connecting interactions. The pandemic that started in 2019 put pressure on parents struggling with health, financial problems, etc. by adding new demands to participate in their children’s daily lessons, learn new technology, and keep children engaged and prepared for classes online. These problems occurred were not localized to the USA, but were in all countries, as COVID was a global pandemic. This study addresses teachers’ suggestions on what parents could do to stimulate their children’s learning and development. A mixed-method research study was conducted in the Midwest of the United States using Qualtrics with data collected from a survey sent to 121 teachers of young children The results provided an analysis of parents’ and teachers ‘struggles in this unprecedented situation and teachers’ suggestions for parents on how to stimulate children’s development if it extends or re-surge.

Although the uses of plant growth stimulating bacteria (PGPR) to improve the yield of graminaceous crops have been studied for over seventy years the utility of the technology remains uncertain. Increases in crop yield have often been inconsistent, reflecting a lack of understanding of the mechanisms by which PGPR exert their effects. Because PGPR are able to fix N2, this was initially assumed to boost crops by supplementing soil N. However, it is now clear, that for most free living PGPR, other mechanisms affecting root development, and nutrient uptake can account for the observed increase in crop yields. Here we review the current state of our understanding of PGPR in graminaceous crop cultivation, identifying their potential contribution to more sustainable agricultural practices but also highlighting issues that need to be addressed before this technology can be appropriately assessed as a replacement for inorganic N addition.

Creativeness of children in early school education as well as the means for its stimulation are important issues both for practitioners and theoreticians of early schooling. It can be observed in everyday conversations between teachers of young children, in curriculum requirements and syllabi for the integrated education as well as some academic and quasi-academic works. The reasons for that are, firstly, the growing awareness of the importance of this sphere of children’s development, and secondly, the fact that early school years are particularly important for the child. Ability to think creatively and solve problems determines success in a variety of situations. For this reason is considered to be a desirable feature, worth developing. The article concerns the relationship between creativity and functioning of children in early childhood education; especially between creative attitude and the educational achievement, as well as social relationship. It contains also an analysis of the cognitive components of the creative process and individual determinants of educational attainment and social development of the child. The author also presented the opportunity to develop creative attitudes of pupils in educational practice in classes 1 – 3. Arts, literary and mathematical education is treated here as a special additional tool to support and intensify this process.

Opis:
Odpowiedź mózgu na bodziec powtarzany ze stałą częstotliwością (np. migające światło diody LED) nazywana jest potencjałem stanu ustalonego (SSVEP ang. Steady State Visually Evoked Potential).
The response of the brain to a stimulus repeated with a constant frequency (eg. flashing LED), is called a Steady State Visually Evoked Potential (SSVEP). As a consequence of the stimulation, the EEG signal (electroencephalogram) recorded from the visual cortex shows a significant power increase in the frequency band corresponding to the stimulus frequency. That means that using a stimulation equipment (with LED flashing with the given frequency) and EEG device recording signals from electrodes placed on the subject’s skull, it is possible to construct the brain-computer interface (BCI). It can be used successfully e.g., as a control system for a wheelchair for disabled people. BCI based on LEDs provides a high number of possible stimulation frequencies. Considering the classic EEG frequency band (5-30 Hz) at least 80 different stimulation frequencies can be delivered by a single LED. This large set of frequencies is used at the BCI learning stage. This stage is necessary in order to select specific stimulation frequencies, which give the strongest SSVEP for a specific subject. In the article the author will present the method of communication in BCI interface based on the SSVEP using LEDs. The most important parameters of the stimulating systems will be indicated.
