Opis:
New solutions in plant protection applications are still highly desirable. Aiming at higher efficiency, environmental safety and profitability of production which, in addition to reducing the costs of the application of plant protection products, limits the destruction of soil structure combined use of agrochemicals seems to be one of the most important method in modern agriculture. In 2016 and 2017, the Plant Protection Institute – National Research Institute in Poznań, Poland, conducted field experiments on the possibility of combining two popular herbicides used to control monocotyledonous weeds: pinoxaden and fenoxaprop-P-ethyl, with a two-component plant growth and development regulator (mepiquat chloride and prohexadione calcium) on KWS Ozon winter wheat. The tested substances were applied at the BBCH 24 stage of winter wheat – herbicide only, and at the BBCH 31 stage – a mix of herbicides with a plant growth and development regulator. Regardless of the method of application of pinoxaden (herbicide only or mixed), high effectiveness of Apera spica-venti control was obtained in both years of the study. The mix of pinoxaden with mepiquat chloride and prohexadione calcium reduced the wheat crop height to a similar extent as separate application of the substances. The combined application of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl with mepiquat chloride improved the effectiveness of wheat crop height control. The method of application of the substances had no significant effect on winter wheat yield. Grain yields harvested from plots treated with the above substances were significantly higher than control only in the case of high weed infestation of winter wheat. The technological value of wheat grain depended on the year of study, while the method of application did not have a significant impact on the evaluated parameters.

The abundance, stem diameter and height of Pentaclethra macrophylla Benth and Parkia biglobosa Jacq was assessed in each of the five Local Government Areas (Ogoja, Yala, Bekwarra, Obudu and Obanliku) of Northern Cross River State, Nigeria using the Modified Whittaker Method. Two forest communities were chosen from each Local Government Area, constituting 10 sites. In each site a 30 × 90 m plot was laid out in a spoke design and tree species present on the plots were recorded. A total of 3, 4, 5, 7, 4, 5, 6, 5, 12 and 10 stands for P. macrophylla and 4, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6, 4,5,8 and 8 stands for P. biglobosa were recorded in Gbogbu, Omulako, Aragban, Abeya, Aguomoh, Ukpah, Alege, Beteh, Bechevie and Sankwala forests respectively based on the sampled plots. Results of population percentage frequency, density and abundance of the two tree species varied across the study sites. The highest percentage frequency recorded for the tree species was 24% while the lowest was 12%. The highest population densities of 1.6666/ha, 1.3333/ha and 1/ha were recorded for the tree species while the lowest was 0.5/ha. Results of abundance show that the species were mostly rare with abundance ratio of (1.00≤AR≤2.99). Results of diameter class sizes of the tree species encountered in this study show that there were trees with mature trunk size than wildlings. Majority of the trees of P. biglobosa and P. macrophylla were in the diameter class of 20 – 29 cm and 30 – 39 cm respectively while results of the height class of trees shows that the minimum and maximum height was 10 -19 ft and 20 -29 ft respectively. This study shows that the trees of P. macrophylla and P. biglobosa were mostly rare and are declining; this could be as a result of over exploitation.

The aim of the study was to determine whether there is a correlation between breast height diameter, tree height and stem total volume of Scots pines, on the one hand, and volume and proportion of juvenile wood, on the other. The investigations comprised pure pine stands of the IInd, IIIrd, IVth and Vth age classes developed in conditions of fresh mixed coniferous forest. A distinct curvilinear correlation was found between volume and proportion of juvenile wood in tree stems and breast height diameter, height and stem total volume. Because of high values of determination coefficients (R2), which characterised the above-mentioned correlations, it seems appropriate to use these regularities to assess the quality of the timber raw material regarding the proportions of its volume and juvenile wood in stems of Scots pine trees.

Opis:
European black alder (Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn.) is a widespread tree species associated with wetlands and riparian ecosystems, thus it plays an important ecological role. Due to its fast growth and favorable wood properties it also has a potential to satisfy a growing demand for wood and fiber. However, its growth potential is not fully realized in Poland. In this study we investigated variation in growth traits, productivity, and stem straightness among 11 populations of European black alder originating from the lowland distribution of the species in Poland. The common−garden experiment located in 1968 in Kórnik (mid−western Poland) has been so far the only provenance experiment with this species in our country. We measured height and diameter of all trees at the site, assessed stem straightness in a 5−step scale (1−crooked; 5−straight), and calculated productivity at age of 50 years, which should be considered close to the rotation age. We found significant variation among populations in all investigated traits. The difference in productivity between the best and the worst provenance reached 75%. Using published and unpublished data from previous measurements at this site we also analyzed a trend in provenance ranking through time. The best and worst provenance could be identified at age 16 years, but many ranking shifts took place afterwards at the intermediate rank positions. We conclude that growth, productivity and stem quality of black alder could be improved through selection of favorable provenances within the species. Selection decisions can be made at the age below the half the rotation age, although decisions at 3/4 of rotation age would be more precise.

Opis:
The results of plant breeding trials with populations of fodder pea strains and broad bean hybrids were the basis of consideration on the interrelationship between some traits - the yield structure elements. Developed by Eaton, a relatively new method of yield component analysis called the two-dimensional partitioning method (TDP) was applied to analyse the data. The method, which combines multiple regression and ANOVA, allows for concise tabular presentation and simple interpretation of the distribution of traits in one direction and the sources of variance according to ANOVA model in the other direction. Additionally, the interpretation of the results was supported by such standard statistical techniques as ANOVA, simple and multiple regression and path analysis. The main components of pea yielding were plant height and the number of pods per plant. Among the analysed characters of broad bean the number of nodes with pods on the main stem, which turned out to be the determinant of broad bean yielding, might be strongly affected by environmental conditions. The number of nodes with pods might be considered a selecting character of high potential yielding of broad bean genotypes.

Opis:
Background. In plant production, reaching high and good quality yields of cultivated plants is achieved mostly thanks to the ability to counteract the occurrence of stress and the amendment of damage caused by stress . The aim of the study was to determine the effect of the applied biostimulator types and the sowing methods on the filed architecture elements of three winter rapeseed cultivars. Material and methods. Field experiment was carried out in years 2013-2016 at the Agricultural Experimental Station in Zawady (52o 03' N; 22o 33' E), which is part of the University of Natural Sciences and Humanities in Siedlce, Poland. The experiment was carried out in a split-split-plot design in three repetitions. The studied factors were: I – winter rapeseed cultivar: Monolit (open-pollinated), PR44D06 (restored hybrid of semidwarf growth type), and PT205 (restored hybrid of traditional growth type); II – sowing method: row sowing (row spacing 22.5 cm, sowing density 60 seeds per $1 m^2$), single-seed sowing (row spacing 45.0 cm, sowing density 40 seeds per $1 m^2$); III – types of the applied biostimulators: control (no biostimulators), Tytanit®, Asahi®SL, and Silvit®. Results. Research demonstrated significant effect of the applied biostimulator types and the sowing method on the biometric plant characteristics before harvest, such as: plant density, plant height, stem thickness at the base, first productive branch placement. The greatest plant height was found in the restored morphotype of traditional growth type and in the open-pollinated cultivar, whereas the highest first productive branch placement in cultivar PT205. Restored hybrids PT205 and PR44D06 were characterized by greater stem thickness at the base in comparison with the open-pollinated morphotype. Conclusion. Biostimulator Asahi SL had the greatest effect on plant density, plant height, stem thickness at the base, and first productive branch placement, whilst biostimulator Tytanit had the lowest effect. Applied bioregulator types did not affect canopy lodging. Sowing method significantly affected stem thickness at the base, although it did not significantly affect canopy lodging. Genetic factor did not determine plant number established before harvest or changes in canopy lodging. Diversified weather conditions in the study years affected the studied elements of field architecture.
Celem przeprowadzonych badań było określenie wpływu rodzajów stosowanych biostymulatorów oraz sposobów siewu na elementy architektury łanu trzech odmian rzepaku ozimego. Doświadczenie polowe przeprowadzono w latach 2013–2016 w Rolniczej Stacji Doświadczalnej Zawady (52 o 03' N; 22 o 33' E), należącej do Uniwersytetu Przyrodniczo-Humanistycznego w Siedlcach. Eksperyment przeprowadzono w układzie split-split-plot w trzech powtórzeniach. Badanymi czynnikami były: I – odmiana uprawna rzepaku ozimego: Monolit (populacyjna), PR44D06 (mieszańcowa zrestorowana o półkarłowym typie wzrostu), PT205 (mieszańcowa zrestorowana o tradycyjnym typie wzrostu); II – sposób siewu: siew rzędowy (rozstawa rzędów 22,5 cm, gęstość siewu 60 nasion na $1 m^2$), siew punktowy (rozstawa 45,0 cm, gęstość siewu 40 nasion na $1 m^2$); III – rodzaje stosowanych biostymulatorów: wariant kontrolny (bez stosowania biostymulatorów), biostymulator Tytanit®, biostymulator Asahi®SL, biostymulator Silvit®. Badania wykazały istotny wpływ rodzajów stosowanych biostymulatorów oraz sposobów siewu na cechy biometryczne roślin oznaczone przed zbiorem takie jak: obsada, wysokość roślin, grubość łodygi u nasady, wysokość osadzenia pierwszego rozgałęzienia produktywnego. Największą wysokość roślin stwierdzono w morfotypie zrestorowanym o tradycyjnym typie wzrostu i odmianie populacyjnej, zaś wysokość do pierwszego rozgałęzienia produktywnego u PT205. Mieszańce zrestorowane PT205 i PR44D06 cechowała większa grubość łodygi u nasady w porównaniu z morfotypem populacyjnym. Biostymulator Asahi SL wywierał największy wpływ na obsadę roślin, wysokość roślin, grubość łodygi u nasady, wysokość osadzenia do pierwszego rozgałęzienia produktywnego, zaś najmniejszy – Tytanit.

Opis:
Biometrical features of plants and physical properties of amaranth seeds (Amaranihus cruentus) of a population variety originating from South America and a new Polish variety Rawa have been studied. New research methods were worked out or old methods were adapted to suit specific features of this plant. Studies were carried out in the period 1995-96 (population variety) and in 1997 (variety Rawa). Alongside field experiments plot experiments with varying sowing density were conducted in order to evaluate the influence of the number of plants per 1 mL plant on the variability of biometrical features and yields. Plant and wisp height, stalk thickness, wisp mass, number of plants per 1 mL and biological yield as well as seed self-shedding were determined. Geometrical properties (thickness, width, and length) were determined for individual seeds together with their aerodynamic features, surface roughness, resistance to static loading and microstructure. Whereas seed mass was characterised by such parameters as: density, porosity, outer and inner friction, angle of repose and chute, rehological properties and qualitative features. It has been found out that Rawa variety was more uniform than population variety and gave yields that were 50% higher. Seed sowing density differentiated plant biometrical features. Seed self-shedding in different weather conditions ranged from 0,3 to 2.1% of the biological yield. Physical properties of seeds changed according to moisture levels which was described by the regression lines and curves. It was found that with moisture decrease seed thickness, and the mean values ranged from 0,58 to 0,93 mm. Seeds of Rawa variety were developed better. The weight of 1000 seeds was from 0,60 g (very dry seeds) to 0,95 g (very moist seeds). Density was increasing with the decrease in moisture from 653,3 to 842,0 kg/m3. Whereas, porosity of the seed mass decreased from 53,5 to 40,0 %. Both the angle of repose and chute were decreasing with the decrease in the coefficient of inner and outer friction while the roughness of the seed surface was increasing. Amaranth seeds appeared to be more resistant to mechanical loading. The force ranging from 10.7N (very moist seeds) to 70,6N (dry seeds) was sufficient to damage the structure of an individual seed. Aerodynamic seed features depended on such parameters as seed load bearing surface, width, length and weight. With the increase in these parameters critical velocity increased linearly, and the coefficient of volatility decreased according to the same formula.A generalised Maxwell model with three branches was used to describe the phenomena of stress relaxation in the seed mass. It led to the conclusion that amaranth seeds en mass show strong viscoelastic properties. Seed qualitative features show high nutritive value, and evaluation of their microstructure showed that they contain unique starch with kernels thet are very uniform in size (1-1,5(m). Learning about biometrical plant features and their physical properties allowed for working out agrophysical basic for the harvest technology of this plant.
