Opis:
In the present paper, secondary metallurgical treatment in ladle furnace during smelting the high carbon steel and steel with improved ductility for cold-deforming, under industrial conditions were analyzed. Common features of these steels are high requirements/strict standards imposed for their metallurgical purity; however they are especially exorbitant for improved ductility steels. In addition, it is widely used to specify alloying additives having significant weights- such as carbon and manganese - and explicitly restricted content of nitrogen requiring metal bath cover prior nitriding.

Opis:
The effect of chemical composition of the sintering atmosphere on the microstructure and mechanical properties of PM structural low-carbon steels is presented. The base powders were Astaloy CrL, Astaloy CrM, low carbon ferromanganese and graphite C-UF. From the base powders two mixtures with compositions of Fe-3%Mn-(1.5/3%)Cr-(0.2/0.5)%Mo-0.2%C were prepared. Following pressing in a steel rigid die, compacts were sintered at 1250°C for 60 min in a semi-closed container. 5%H2-95%N2 mixture and air were the sintering atmospheres. For sintering in air, lumps of ferromanganese were placed with the compacts in the container. After sintering, half of the samples were tempered at 200°C for 60 minutes in air. Mechanical tests (tensile, bend, toughness, hardness) and microstructural investigations were performed. The microstructures of the steels were inhomogeneous, mainly ferritic-bainic. Tempering of steel based on Astaloy CrM sintered in an atmosphere of 5% H2-95% N2 slightly reduced tensile strength and toughness: from 748 to 734 MPa and from 7.15 to 6.83 J/cm2, respectively. Chemical composition had a greater effect; steels based on Astaloy CrL and Astaloy CrM had tensile strengths 526-665 and 672-748 MPa, hardness 280-325 and 388-421 HV, respectively. The best properties were obtained after sintering in air of Fe-3%Mn-3%Cr-0.5%Mo-0.2%C without heat treatment: tensile strength 672 MPa, toughness 6.93 J/cm2, hardness 421.1 HV, 0.2 % offset yield strength 395 MPa.

Opis:
The objective of the paper was development of the software tool, which can be used to design the best continuous annealing technology for DP steels in a fast and efficient way. The model of phase transformations during heating and cooling stages, which is the basis of this tool, is described briefly. Results of identification and validation of the model are presented, as well. Due to complex thermal cycles in the continuous annealing process and large number of the design variables, selection of the optimal technology is difficult. It is expected that the developed model will help to evaluate various technological variants and to compare them. To make this procedure more efficient, the user friendly software was developed. Basic principles and features of this tool are presented in the work. The main functionalities of the software compose simulation of phase transformations during thermal cycles and capability to apply simulations to design the best technological variant. Beyond this a data base, which stores material and technological information for all previously analysed cases, is included in the developed software. Graphical user interface is added to make the software easily accessible and user friendly.

Opis:
In an attempt to study the sinterability of potential high-strength nickel-free sintered structural steels containing Mn, Cr, Si and Mo compacts were prepared based on sponge and water atomised iron powders and on Astaloy prealloyed powders. To these were admixed ferromanganese, ferroslicon, and graphite. The samples were sintered at temperatures 1120 and 1250°C in laboratory tube furnaces in hydrogen, hydrogen-nitrogen atmospheres with dew points better than –60°C or in nitrogen in a semiclosed container in a local microatmosphere. After sintering the samples were slowly cooled or sinterhardened. Generally resultant microstructures were inhomogeneous, consisted of pearlite/ bainite/martensite, but were characterised by an absence of oxide networks. Sintering studies performed over a range of compositions have shown that superior strength, ranging beyond 900 MPa, along with reasonable tensile elongation, can be achieved with these new steels.

Opis:
Sintered steels with the addition of manganese are widely used in industry because of their attractive mechanical properties. The main problem of using manganese in powder metallurgy steel production is its high affinity for oxygen. The choice of proper sintering parameters can significantly improve the properties of the final product. For the present investigations Höganäs iron powder grade NC 100.24, low-carbon (1.3%C) ferromanganese Elkem (Eramet Norway Sauda – formerly Elkem Manganese Sauda) and graphite powder grade C-UF were used as the starting powders. Mixture of powders, containing 3% Mn and 0.8% C, was prepared in Turbula mixer for 30 minutes. Following mixing, “dog bone” compacts were pressed at 660 MPa according to PN-EN ISO 2740 standard. Sintering of compacts was carried out in the laboratory tube furnace at 1120 and 1250°C for 60 minutes in air or pure nitrogen (99.999%N2). The present investigation deals with the comparison of two heat treatment routes: sinterhardening (SH) and sinteraustempering (SAT), carried out both in air and pure nitrogen. Mechanically tested steels were investigated using JEOL JSM 700F completed with EDS. Metallography tests were carried out on 3% Nital etched samples. In this paper the results of mechanical tests and metallography and fractography investigations are shown. According to the results obtained, it can be assumed that for sinteraustempering higher temperature does not influence mechanical properties of sintered steels. For both methods using pure nitrogen as sintering atmosphere gave better results.

Electrochemical Cr coatings doped with diamond nanoparticles were deposited on sintered steels with different carbon contents (0.2-0.8 wt.-%). The mechanical properties of surfaces as hardness and wear resistance increase as compared to the steel substrate. Microcutting and microgridding mechanisms were observed after tribological tests, but also adhesive wear in some areas was observed. X-ray examination indicated that the layer was textured, with the exception of the sample with the highest concentration of diamond nanoparticles in the electrolyte (42 g/l). The intensity ratio ICr110/ICr200 was calculated and compared with the indices for a standard sample. The greatest differences in the intensity ratio occurred for the samples with low carbon content (0.2% C). On the other hand, more the material is textured the greater the difference.

The purpose of the research was to examine the influence of boron on the selected properties of low-alloy cast steels. The chemical compositions of the cast steels were designed especially for this study to contain different alloy elements. The first composition lacked significant alloying elements. The subsequent grades of cast steels had the addition of chrome, chrome with vanadium, and chrome with titanium. It was decided to investigate the influence of boron in the presence of such alloying additives on the temperature of phase transformations. On the basis of dilatometric curves, the characteristic temperatures of the phase transformations were determined. Additionally, to assess the influence of the cooling rate on the structure of cast steels, an analysis of their microstructure, after full annealing and quenching, was carried out.

Opis:
The work deal with an assembling and comparing of transformation diagrams of two low-alloy steels, specifically 16MnCrS5 and 20MnCrS5. In this work, diagrams of the type of CCT and DCCT of both steels were assembled. Transformation diagrams were assembled on the basis of dilatometric tests realized on the plastometer Gleeble 3800, of metallographic analyses and of hardness measurements. In addition, for comparison, the transformation diagrams were assembled even with use of the QTSteel 3.2 software. Uniform austenitization temperature of 850°C was chosen in case of both steels and even both types of diagrams. In case of both steels, an influence of deformation led to expected acceleration of phase transformations controlled by diffusion and also of bainite transformation. In both cases, the kinetics of martensitic transformation was not significantly affected by deformation.

Opis:
The present paper deals with the influence of pitting corrosion on mechanical properties of mild and low alloy steels and strength of steel structures under static and quasi-static loads. Pitting corrosion is a very important phenomenon that influence local strength of ship hull members. The present paper is based mainly on Japanese publications. Analyzing the standard tensile diagrams one can see that that pitting corrosion reduces the load corresponding to yield stress (YS) and, even more markedly, tensile strength UTS, reduces almost to zero plastic flow strains at YS load level and dramatically reduces the total elongation to fracture. Nominal UTS load for uniformly corroded specimens is higher than that for pitted specimens at the same average thickness loss. The strength related to the true fracture surface area (i.e. reduced by pits, taking into account real path of the crack through the pits) is almost independent of the thickness loss and is almost the same as for uniform thickness loss. For wide specimens the tensile strength depends mainly on the local deformation ability, and the maximum loading ability for large members, predicted on the base of the total true fracture surface area, can be overestimated. Concept of equivalent thickness loss for plates under bending and compression and for more complex structural models as well as relation between the average and the equivalent thickness losses has been presented. Approach based on degree of pitting (ratio of pitted area to total plate surface area) has been shown as a real and more convenient than the approach based on the thickness loss.

In the present time, advanced high strength steel (AHSS) has secured a dominant place in the automobile sector due to its high strength and good toughness along with the reduced weight of car body which results in increased fuel efficiency, controlled emission of greenhouse gases and increased passengers’ safety. In the present study, four new advanced high strength steels (AHSS) have been developed using three different processing routes, i.e., thermomechanical controlled processing (TMCP), quenching treatment (QT ), and quenching & tempering (Q&T) processes, respectively. The current steels have achieved a better combination of the high level of strength with reasonable ductility in case of TMCP as compared to the other processing conditions. The achievable ultrahigh strength is primarily attributed to mixed microstructure comprising lower bainite and lath martensite as well as grain refinement and precipitation hardening.

In this study, the effect of the coiling temperature on the tensile properties of API X70 linepipe steel plates is investigated in terms of the microstructure and related anisotropy. Two coiling temperatures are selected to control the microstructure and tensile properties. The API X70 linepipe steels consist mostly of ferritic microstructures such as polygonal ferrite, acicular ferrite, granular bainite, and pearlite irrespective of the coiling temperature. In order to evaluate the anisotropy in the tensile properties, tensile tests in various directions, in this case 0° (rolling direction), 30°, 45° (diagonal direction), 60°, and 90° (transverse direction) are conducted. As the higher coiling temperature, the larger amount of pearlite is formed, resulting in higher strength and better deformability. The steel has higher ductility and lower strength in the rolling direction than in the transverse direction due to the development of γ-fiber, particularly the {111}<112> texture.

The article presents an innovative method of corrosion tests using the acoustic emission method and the corrosion tester. The problem of corrosion occurring in ballast tanks and tanks carrying petroleum products is discussed. The acoustic method is presented which, due to the use of a unique corrosion tester, is used to monitor the course of corrosion processes in steel. The principle of operation of the corrosion tester, its construction and its use in Non Destructive Testing (NDT) are described in detail. Corrosion test results, obtained with the use of a corrosion tester, are presented. An analysis and a short discussion of the obtained results are given. The results of both the acoustic and metallographic tests prove the possibility of detecting material damage occurring during the operation of the corrosion tester, allowing determination of the course and type of corrosion damage.

The contributions of work-hardening of austenite and the presence of martensite on the hardening of an AISI 304L stainless steel were evaluated based on plastic deformation under different reductions in thickness at two rolling temperatures. The cold deformation temperatures of 300 K and 373 K were chosen to induce strain-hardening plus strain-induced martensitic transformation in the former and strain-hardening in the latter. This made it possible to elucidate the real effects of strengthening mechanisms of metastable austenitic stainless steels during mechanical working.

The paper presents the results of research on the microstructure of martensitic X10CrMoVNb9-1 (P91) and X13CrMoCo- VNbNB9-2-1 (PB2) steel subject to long-term ageing at the temperature of 620°C and holding times up to 30 000 hours. The microstructural tests of the examined steel types were performed using a scanning microscope Joel JSM - 6610LV and a transmission electron microscope TITAN 80 - 300. The stability of the microstructure of the investigated steels was analyzed using a quantitative analysis of an image, including measurements of the following: the density of dislocations inside martensite/subgrain laths, the width of martensite laths, and the mean diameter of precipitates. It has been concluded that during long-term ageing, the microaddition of boron in PB2 steel significantly influenced the slowing of the process of degradation of the martensitic steel microstructure, as a result of slowing the process of coagulation of M23C6 carbides and Laves phase. It had a favorable effect on the stabilization of lath microstructure as a result of retardation of the processes of recovery and polygonization of the matrix.
