Opis:
During steady-state operation filaments of incandescent lamps are considerably hot and provide luminous flux for illumination but when it is switched off the temperature as well as the light output drops quite fast. The cooling-time of a lamp is defined as the time needed for the temperature to drop to the point where the light output of lamp falls to 10% from the steady-state operation magnitude. The operating temperatures of coiled-wire filament lamps of 6, 10, 25, 40, 60, 100, 200, 300, and 500 watts are borrowed from a previous publication and the lumen outputs are estimated here. The lumen output for each degree Kelvin fall of the temperature is calculated to locate the temperature at which lumen output has dropped to 10% as per definition of the cooling time. Lastly the expression for the cooling-time has been derived and estimated for each lamp. The numbers so obtained do match satisfactorily.

Electricity provides power to incandescent lamps to heat the filament hot enough so that it provides light for illumination. The time taken to achieve a state of full brilliance after being turned on is so fast that it may be presumed to be adiabatic, hence it is deemed adiabatic heating time. In view of the fact that in actual practice simultaneously black-body radiation cools the filament, the General Electric in its bulletin provides a better time scale describing heating and cooling of filament. These are average times required for the filament to warm up to 90 per cent light output after the circuit is closed, or to cool down to 10 per cent after the circuit is opened, respectively. The exercise of estimating luminous flux and heating-times for typical 10, 100, 500 and 1000 W lamps have been undertaken for the first time for the benefit of students. This problem involves three disciplines electricity, optics and heat. The first describes the power needed to heat the filament quickly, optics then helps us in determining the light output and discipline of heat provides methods for solving the heat equation in order to estimate time to light or time to darkness. The study reveals that the supposition of linear configurations for the filaments neither matches luminous flux nor the heating-times. HS Leff’s suggestion of introducing a shadow factor which reduces the exposed surface area, as it so happens in the coiled filaments, successfully explains the measured observations.

During steady-state operation, hot-coiled filaments in incandescent lamps provide luminous flux for illumination, but when switched off, the temperature, as well as the light output drops quite fast. The cooling-time of a lamp is the time required for the hot filament to cool down to ten per cent light output after the circuit is opened. In this paper, the exercise of estimating luminous flux and cooling-times for typical 10, 100, 500 and 1000 W lamps has been undertaken for the first time for the benefit of students. This problem involves three disciplines: electricity, optics and heat. Information drawn from field of Electrical studies allows us to understand the power that quickly heats the filament, followed by that from optics that helps us in determining the light output, while heat studies are responsible for understanding the cooling of the hot filament. This last is largely explained through the Stefan-Boltzmann law. In this paper, we show that the supposition of linear configurations for the filaments neither matches luminous flux nor the cooling-times. Both fall short. H.S. Leff’s suggestion of introducing a shadow factor that reduces the exposed surface area, as it so happens in the coiled filaments, successfully explains the measured observations.

Opis:
Self-excited cage induction generators are often used in certain renewable energy systems. Now, new designs of generators are developed with application of cage induction machines with two 3-phase stator windings. The article presents some issues concerning the analysis of steady-state operation, the principles of parameter selection and determination of operation and control characteristics of autonomous cage induction generator with two stator windings and excitation capacitors. The operation states for various systems of load circuit connections to the terminals of generator stators were considered. The equivalent circuits of dual stator induction generator for the analysis of steady-state operation have been formulated. The circuits enable taking into account the influence of the electromagnetic generator parameters, the capacitance of capacitor batteries and the parameters of load circuits, connected to the generator stator terminals. The influence of saturation of main magnetic generator circuit was included by nonlinear variation of magnetizing reactance of the generator. The conditions which are necessary for self-excitation and steady-state operation were formulated on the circuit analysis of the generator. The conventional system of paralel connection and new systems of serial connection of excitation capacitors are presented. The chosen calculated characteristics of generator have been described.
Samowzbudne generatory indukcyjne klatkowe są często stosowane w wybranych układach energii odnawialnej. Obecnie rozwijane są nowe konstrukcje generatorów z zastosowaniem maszyn indukcyjnych klatkowych z dwoma 3-fazowymi uzwojeniami stojana. Artykuł przedstawia zagadnienia dotyczące analizy stanów statycznych, doboru parametrów oraz wyznaczenia charakterystyk elektromagnetycznych i sterowania autonomicznego samowzbudnego generatora indukcyjnego klatkowego z dwoma uzwojeniami stojana. Rozpatrzono układy topologiczne generatora dla symetrycznego i niesymetrycznego przyłączenia obwodów obciążenia do uzwojeń stojana generatora. Przedstawiono obwodowe schematy zastępcze generatora indukcyjnego pozwalające na uwzględnienie w analizie parametrów elektromagnetycznych generatora, pojemności kondensatorów wzbudzenia oraz parametrów odbiorników przyłączonych do zacisków uzwojeń stojana generatora. W analizie uwzględniono zmienność nasycenia głównego obwodu magnetycznego generatora przez wprowadzenie nieliniowej zmienności reaktancji magnesowania generatora. Na podstawie analizy obwodowej sformułowano warunki statyczne wymagane dla pracy ustalonej generatora. Analizowano układy z konwencjonalnym bocznikowym przyłączeniem baterii kondensatorów wzbudzenia do uzwojeń stojana oraz układy z przyłączeniem dodatkowych baterii kondensatorów wzbudzenia szeregowo do obwodów obciążenia generatora. Przedstawiono wybrane wyniki obliczeń charakterystyk generatora.

This paper is devoted to expand the very promising research undertaken in the author's previous work, basically done on simplified modelling the escort push operation. Now, the other two modes of a tug's employment, as stated in the title, are covered. The special focus is again set on the indirect towing in that the towline force is much higher than the thruster force. The ratio of these two forces, referred to as the relative towing force (or amplification ratio) is evaluated together with the hull drift angle and the thruster(-s) angle for a given escort speed. This mutual relationship is known as the tug performance diagram. Although rather generic (container-type) formulas are derived, they are supplied for exemplification purposes with simple, analytically given hull hydrodynamic forces. The aim is also here to provide a basis for further sensitivity analysis of the model and possible improvement/optimisation to the tug design. The obtained charts also could serve as rough and clear guidance for towmasters while escorting.

In a continuing effort to realize the simultaneous hydrogen and methanol production via the auto-thermal methanol synthesis process, the effect of two different hydrogen redistribution strategies along a double-membrane reactor has been considered. A steady-state one-dimensional heterogeneous model was developed to compare two strategies applied in the operation of the auto-thermal methanol synthesis. It was found that the counter-current configuration exhibited the better performance compared to the reactor operated in the co-current mode from both the economic and environmental points of view. This superiority is ascribed to the establishment of a more favourable temperature profile along the reactor and also more hydrogen extraction from the reaction zone. Moreover, the influence of some operating variables was investigated on the performance of the auto-thermal double-membrane reactor in the counter-current configuration. The results suggest that utilizing this configuration for pure hydrogen and methanol production could be feasible and beneficial.

Opis:
One of key components in keeping a ship seaworthy is a correctly prepared cargo plan. Considering the recent cost cutting measures and reduced transportation volumes relevance of optimizing such a plan cannot be understated. Though there’s a number of studies addressing the issue none of them covers all the operational and constructional constraints necessary to factor for. This article presents an integer model that tries to address some of the constraints missed by other researches. A method for solving the model is designed and developed based on a steady-state genetic algorithm. A numerical experiment is conducted showing the method’s feasibility.
