Opis:
Research background: As a system of official EU statistics, Intrastat contains data collected by Member States aggregated by Eurostat on the Union's level in the form of COMEXT database. Country-level data are based on declarations made by businesses dispatching or acquiring goods from other EU Member States. Since the same transaction is declared twice - as an ICS in one country and at the same time as an ICA in another country by the partner - the database contains mirror data. Analysis of mirror data lets us assess the quality of public statistics data on international trade. Purpose of the article: The aim of the article is to rank EU Member States according to quality of data on intra-Community trade in goods collected by Intrastat. Foreign trade stimulates economic development on one hand and is the development's reflection on the other. Thus it is very important that official statistics in this area be of good quality. Analysis of mirror data from partner states in intra-Community trade in goods allows us to claim that not every Member State pro-vides data of satisfactory quality level. Methods: We used the authors' methodology of assessing quality of mirror data. These include data asymmetry indices, both proposed by Eurostat and the authors' own proposals. We have also examined the changes in the above mentioned rankings over time. Findings & Value added: The result of the survey is ordering of EU Member States according to the quality of data on intra-Community trade in goods. The rankings are presented for the period of 2014-2017, during which there were 28 Member States of the EU. Changes in distinct countries' positions were shown as a result of changes in overall quality of statistical data collected in these countries. The research methodology can be used in the process of monitoring data quality of the Intrastat system.

Opis:
The Intrastat system is used for gathering statistical data on trade in goods between the EU Member States. Data from all the Member States are aggregated by Eurostat. Specifics of the data collection process are different in different countries and that is why mirror data (regarding by default the same transactions revealed in statistics of both the acquirer and supplier country) often do not match. The goal of the analysis conducted was to assess the quality of data on intra‑Community trade in goods between the ‘old’ fifteen and the ‘new’ EU Member States as well as to point out these directions that influenced the observed differences in mirror data the most. The paper is a follow‑up of previous research on the quality of foreign trade data.

Energy generation is one of the most complicated industrial processes. Because of its complexity, there is no accurate conventional model of a power unit. Fuzzy logic concepts might be effectively implemented in this field. In the paper a universal method of creating a fuzzy logic model is presented. To check the usefulness of the method in the case of real industrial issues, a fuzzy model of temperature difference in a condenser was automatically generated. The modelling experiment and the assessment of model quality are presented in the paper.

Objectives To investigate the prevalence of obesity among different types of employment status in the Italian working population, and to examine associated risk factors. Material and Methods Cross-sectional survey of 36 814 people that declared to have been occupied with the same type of contract for at least 5 years was analyzed. Multivariable logistic regression models were built considering workers’ sex, age, education, family body mass index (BMI) category, leisure time and occupational physical activity, weight control habits, smoking habit, use of drugs, number of working hours per week, and type of working contract. Results After adjusting for covariates, the importance of temporary-employment was confirmed by multivariate analysis, with odds ratio (OR) = 1.32 for obesity (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07–1.63) with respect to employed persons; the association was even more important in workers occupied for more than 40 h/week (OR = 1.69, 95% CI: 1.07–2.66); moreover, shiftwork was confirmed as a risk factor for obesity in workers (OR = 1.06, 95% CI: 0.94–1.2). Dealing with different occupational group, some categories were associated with obesity; in particular, this phenomenon involved people employed in agriculture (OR = 1.44, 95% CI: 1.22–1.7), transportation (OR = 1.53, 95% CI: 1.26–1.85), and public administration (OR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.1–1.55). Conclusions Our analysis suggest that obesity is strongly correlated with temporary employment. Maybe the way out this pathway to obesity in the future might be working better, choosing organizational flexibility rather than fixed term. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2016;29(6):903–914

Opis:
The article is focused on issues of the secure operation of official statistics in Ukraine during the application of martial law. It was found that the gaps in conventional sources of statistical data caused by the war needed to be filled with data from alternative sources, including Big Data. The level of digitalisation in Ukraine as the basis for using Big Data was analysed by the proposed indices of internetisation, social progress and digital transformation. Thanks to our research, several problems (methodological, legal, financial, and managerial) were identified as vital for statistical offices on their way to the implementation of Big Data in statistical processes. Our proposals concern tools for Big Data processing, such as Data Hypercube as a way for presenting Big Data for their visualisation, applications of Web scraping in estimating the consumer prices index, analyses of labour and real estate markets, and the applications of specialised software for the collection, processing and analysis of Big Data sets.

Datafication brings with it the challenges for journalists to fulfill their historical role as mediators of social processes to their audiences. Journalism has been a rather humanistic field, where journalists tell stories, but do not deal with the analysis and interpretation of numbers. For the current study a methodological tool was developed to measure data literacy among journalists in Estonia. The study confirms that data literacy is acknowledged by journalists as a requirement of future journalism, but their actual skills are still low. Journalists feel more comfortable with data presented in familiar forms. There is a strong tendency that data literacy develops when the skills needed for data processing are in actual use.

(fragment tekstu)
The phenomenon of "big data", understood as the collection and processing of large data sets, in order to extract from them new knowledge, develops independently of the will of individuals and societies. The driving force behind this development is, on the one hand, rapid technological progress in the field of IT, and on the other the desire of many organizations to gain access to the knowledge accumulated in more and more electronic databases of Internet users, facebook, or twitter. The fact that the challenge is this phenomenon for man and for the statistics, the methodology can in these conditions prove less adequate, treats article. The author tries to argue that in case of protection of individuals and society, devoid of attribute privacy and anonymity, technological progress raises previously unknown threats. As statisticians analytical work hardly keep up with the possibilities offered by "big data", as well as the protection of human rights is merely a belated response to the dynamic world of electronic data. This article concerns a big challenge of public statistics, which is to find a balance between the ability to meet the ever growing data users’ needs and maintaining high standards of quality of data available. The starting point for reflections on this area is to define widely understood standards of quality statistics, from the perspective of both data producers and users. The authors of the article refer to key documents governing the system of statistics quality at an international level, as well as in Poland. They also emphasize the need to exchange information on quality between data producers and users as well as the opportunities that dialogue creates to the process of improving statistical products. At the same time, they point out that high quality of statistical data, defined by such attributes as: relevance, accuracy, timeliness and punctuality, accessibility and clarity, comparability and coherence gives users the opportunity for an accurate, reliable and in-depth data analysis. Against this background, the article includes examples of the antinomy that may occur in the process of developing individual attributes. In conclusion, the authors emphasize an international aspect of statistical quality, continuity of processes aimed at improving quality and an important role of data users in those processes.

In recent years, with the increasing popularity of IoT, the rapid growth of smartphone usage enabled by the increase adoption of Internet services and the continuously decreasing costs of these devices and services has led to a huge increase in the volume of data that governments can use in the context of smart city initiatives. The need for analytics is becoming a requirement for smart city projects such as city dashboards to provide citizens with an easy to understand overview of the city. As such, data should be analyzed, reduced and presented in such a way that citizens can easily understand various aspects of the city and use this information to increase quality of life. In this paper, we firstly present the context and the start of the design and implementation of proposed solution for real-time data processing in smart cities, mainly an analytics processing pipeline and a dashboard prototype for this solution, named My City Dashboard. We focus on high scalability and modularity of this platform.

The problems of coherence and comparability exceed the classical notion of analysis of survey errors, because they do not concern single surveys or variables but the question of how results of two or more surveys can be used together and how relevant data can effectively be compared to obtain a better picture of social and economic phenomena over various aspects, e.g. space or time. This paper discusses characteristics of the main concepts of coherence and comparability as well as a description of differences and similarities between these two notions. Types of coherence and various aspects of perception of these notions in business statistics are analysed. Main sources of lack of coherence and comparability, factors affecting them (e.g. methodology, time, region, etc.) and methods of their measurement in context of information obtained from businesses will be also presented.

W pracy przedstawiono rzadziej stosowany diagram nazywany łodyga i liście (ang. stem-and-leaf plot), zaliczany do graficzno-tabelarycznych metod wizualizacji danych. Ten wykres wnosi wiele szczegółów do opisu rozkładu zmiennej. Dla zobrazowania przykła-dowych wykresów wykorzystujemy środowisko R.
Studying distributions of quantitative traits plays a special role in data analysis; the best tools for that purpose appear to be graphical methods. Among various types of plots, most important ones are histograms, density plots and box-plot. In this paper, we introduce a less frequently applied stem-and-leaf diagram, which is a graphical-tabular technique of data visualization. This simple and interesting technique, despite its simplicity, can provide quite deep information about a variable’s distribution. To present how the stem-and-leaf display works, we have used R environment.
