Opis:
Applied nucleation is one of silvicultural measures used in the afforestation of new areas and reclamation or rebuilding of the forest species composition. It involves sawing or planting small patches of trees, or nuclei as focal areas for succession, which spread out into the environment as soon as they produce seeds. The aim of the study was to create a plan of planted nuclei that facilitate, in the long term, the enrichment of the species composition and gradual reconstruction of forests in the Stołowe Mountains National Park (PNGS), south−western Poland. The plan was assumed to comprise the locations of nuclei with an indication of tree species designated for planting in a given nucleus. Stand descriptions and maps from 2014 were used to determine: (1) the expected proportion (tab. 1) as well as the need to change of the proportion of individual tree species (tab. 3), (2) the urgency of actions to be taken due to the difference between the desired and actual proportion of a given tree species in individual stands (tab. 2), (3) the proportion of nuclei with a given tree species (tab. 3) and (4) the location of nuclei (200 in total) taking into consideration the local needs to increase the proportion of a given species. To determine the proportion (and then the number) of nuclei with a given tree species we took into account: (1) the difference between the present and desired proportion of a given species (considering the most numerous one), (2) the frequency of species as desired admixture or co−dominant species, and (3) the occurrence of species in rare but important habitats, e.g. along streams or ravines (tab. 3). A map of the distribution of stands where introduction of a given tree species is desirable, including information on the urgency of this treatment was prepared (fig. 1). The PNGS forest area was divided into patches using polygons of different shape and area. The boundaries of the polygons were drawn separately for each tree species in such a way that the number of patches was equal to the number of nuclei designed for planting, and the number of stands in the two highest planting urgency classes within each of these patches was equal. One nucleus of a given tree species was planned to be established within a patch. Only proportion of European beech, silver fir and wych elm was lower than desired (tab. 3). Such an assessment did not reflect the scarcity of species in individual stands. In more than thousand cases, the urgency of introduction of a given species was very high (tab. 4). It was essential to establish some nuclei in a significant part of the PNGS forests (fig. 2).

Roztocze Nation Park (RNP) is located in the central part of Roztocze, a hilly region in south-eastern Poland. The most important type of forest community in RNP is Dentario glandulosae-Fagetum. Potential and real vegetation, as well as forest stand maps were used to analyze changes of the age and species structure of beechwood stand from 1946 to 2001. Beechwoods were dominated by two species: fir and beech. During the last 50 years their proportion has entirely changed and the share of oldest groups of stand (over 120 years old) has increased significantly.

Opis:
As the title and introduction explain, Sophie Quirk’s monograph sets out to investigate the reasons and ways comedians manipulate and influence their audience. The term manipulation, however, should be considered apart from its often negative connotations and should be interpreted as the comedian’s attempt to skilfully communicate with their audience, elicit laughter and, most importantly in this case, influence their beliefs, attitude and behaviour (see p. 2). With these premises, Quirk explores instances of stand-up comedy including some interaction between mainly well-known British comedians (e.g. Eddy Izzard, Stewart Lee, Josie Long, etc.) and their audience. She also interviews some of these performers so as to gain a first-hand understanding of the comedians’ performing experience.

Opis:
The incidence and severity of butt rot were assessed in 12 selected Norway spruce seed stands in the Beskidy Mountains, Poland. A semi-invasive technique of sonic tomography was used for the assessment of rot damage. Stands of different age classes (100–120, 130–150, 160–170 years old) and distinct regions of provenance (Istebna and Orawa) were investigated. Hierarchical analysis of variance was used to determine effects of stand age and stand provenance on butt rot occurrence at a stand level. High incidence of butt rot was noted in all of the studied seed stands (47% to 87% of diagnosed tree samples). Stand age had a significant effect on percentage share of ‘damaged wood’ on the tomogram. The extent of rot damage was rising with stand age, and the largest was observed in the age category 160–170 years. Spruce stands of Istebna provenance were generally more damaged by butt rot than those of Orawa provenance, however, the latter have been growing in forest sites more suitable for spruce in terms of fertility and altitude. Hierarchical analysis of variance did not show a statistically significant relationship between the region of provenance and average share of ‘damaged wood’ on the tomogram. Presented results indicate that for stands growing in similar conditions vulnerability to butt rot is determined by stand age. Further research is needed to separate impact of stand provenance identified with specific genetic constitution of a population from the effect of environmental conditions typical of a given region of provenance.

Opis:
The paper presents preliminary stand tests of a demonstrator of planetary gearing. The gearing used in the research has been made of ABS polymer with good strength parameters. Parts of the gearing have been created by means of FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling). The input data come from 3D CAD solid model which geometry is determined by a file of any system equipped with the ability to save in STL format. This model is described by a grid of triangles and divided into levels (layers). Their thickness determines the accuracy of representation of a detail curvature. The thickness of the layers is also limited by the accuracy of the process and the equipment. The research was conducted on a test stand designed in an open system powered by a three-phase electric motor. The control is provided by a single-phase inverter with three outputs, which ensures full speed control. The load of the stand is realized by an electromagnetic powder brake. The possibility to control working time lets you precisely define the time intervals of various stages of the research. Using timer makes it possible to observe the current consumption of the gearing and helps to establish the research process. The research at this stand allows for obtaining stable working parameters and thus for obtaining accurate, not distorted results of the demonstrator’s operation. The purpose of the research is verification of gear endurance calculations and verification of the design in conditions similar to real ones.

The purpose of the research is to study the current state, features of growth and formation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands in Eastern Polissia of Ukraine. The structure of pine stands by origin, age, the density of stocking, site indices, forest types and health condition was analysed. Features of the formation of stands were studied at the permanent sample plots. Visual assessment of health condition, as well as signs of pest and disease damage of trees, other defects and external signs that caused stem defects was carried out. The age structure of pine stands was not optimal: there was an excess of mature stands and a lack of young stands. The health condition of mixed pine stands was relatively better than that of pure pine stands. Mixed pine stands were characterised by high biological resistance and accumulated significant wood stock under regular sylvicultural maintenance. The dynamics of forestry and evaluation indicators of reference pine stands were evaluated and comparison of their growth with stocked pine stands was performed.

Description of the test stand for investigation of the integrated powertrain (powerpack) for armoured modular vehicle (AMV), disassembled from vehicle, is presented in this paper. The powerpack unit consist of a diesel engine, a gearbox and a cooling unit with a hydraulic fan drive. The stand is equipped with measuring devices for torque measure, fuel consumption, exhaust smoke and exhaust gas components emission analysers. The powerpack has been loaded by a hydraulic dynamometer of power range up to 1250 kW. It is dynabar water dynamometer with high dynamics of load changes. For control the motor and drive, system the original control panels from the vehicle was used. The original start-up unit, mid fuel tank and air filters were used too. Research on the powerpack unit was made in the steady state versus the engine load and speed. The parameters of the engine and exhaust components were measured and compared with the catalogue values. Two modes of engine work were compared – economic and dynamic modes. Those differences between two modes are result of maximum fuel consumption decreasing. The parameters of engine work were comparable in middle and low range of engine load. On the stand investigation in transient states during free engine acceleration were made. It was found that additional load of engine is too high and this problem should be clarified.

Objectives: Determination of the phases in a stand-to-sit-to-stand task based on a derivative of the parameter with the lowest variance calculated based on the modified symmetry index. Material and Methods: The study group comprised 11 healthy women and 11 healthy men from the University of Physical Education in Warsaw. The examination of the kinematic and kinetic parameters of sitting down and standing up from a chair was carried out using the Vicon Mx system and Kistler force platforms. Results: The modified symmetry index was employed to select the parameters used to choose those with the lowest variance. Consequently, the phases in a stand-to-sit-to-stand task were determined. Conclusions: It was demonstrated that the task of sitting down is a reverse task with respect to standing up in terms of the symmetry of the parameters analyzed.

This paper presents a method of measuring deformations in the contact between flat surfaces and a way of estimating the shares of elastic and plastic deformations in the total contact deformations. Experiments showed that the share of plastic deformations in the total contact deformations varied depending on the strength parameters of the specimens and the roughness parameters of the contacting surfaces, amounting to a few per cent and to 37% for respectively steel specimens and specimens made of aluminium alloy AW5754. A strategy for estimating all the deformation components for the tested specimen types and the kinds of machining is presented.

Opis:
The analyses of 4 permanent study plots located in the Białowieża forest (NE Poland, at 52º43´ N, 23º50´ E) were carried out 4 times, first time in 1973 or 1974 and next in 1985, 1998, 2008. The paper presents the results of a long–term study on natural forest dynamics in two forest communities: raised-bog pine forest of the association Ledo-Sphagnetum magellanici Sukopp 1959 em. Neuhäusl 1969 and transitional bogs represented by the boreal spruce forest Sphagno girgensohnii-Piceetum Polak. 1962. On each measurement date the DBH of all trees were recognized. At the same time, stems of shrub species as well as tree species with the height lower than 1.3 m were counted within the experimental areas. During the study period the structure of stands changed significantly. The major change observed on raised bog sites was an increase in numbers of Betula spp., Picea abies (L.) H. Karst. and Quercus robur L. After 34th-year of observations the boreal spruce forest stand partly passed the terminal phase and regenerated. New species occurred in the stands, especially in their lower layer, are typical for oak-lime-hornbeam forest, such as e.g. Carpinus betulus L., Q. robur, Acer platanoides L. Rapid development of Corylus avellana L. was also observed. During last decades, the decrease in the number of Pinus sylvestris L. trees has been observed. The results of analyses of stand data in four research periods show that the wetland habitat of the Białowieża forest has been a subject to the processes of succession conditioned by environmental changes such as desiccation through lowering of the water table as well as climatic changes entailing inter alia an increase of the air temperature and a decrease of precipitation.

The paper provides some guidelines on the choice of the target species compositions for plantations that would replace monocultural spruce stands growing on the sites of the Silesian Beskid Mts. Part of the guidelines relates to the rules governing the sequence in which the monocultures will be converted into mixed stands. It is suggested that those rules should be combined with the principles of the establishment of progenyplantations. The seed stands of the Istebna spruce are experimentally divided into four categories according to their abilityto perform the function of a seed stand. The following features of the stands are analysed: vitality, density, stage of regeneration, protective and cultural functions. The paper contains also an outline of the methods of species conversion and the relevant references.

Opis:
The paper presents a new variant of the method for determining the stand volume of age classes in a forest district or inspectorate (subdistrict). The methodological basis for this variant of the method is a branch of mathematical statistics called the "representative method", which is based on stratified sampling, similar to the variant of forest inventory currently used in forestry. In the new variant of the method, strata are formed based on the age of the main tree species and the stand volume, which is determined by the stand growth model, while in the variant currently used, strata are formed based on the stand's main tree species and its age. In the new variant of the stand volume determination method, 13 stages are distinguished, which can be divided into the initial and the main part. First, data from the State Forest Information System (SILP) database are processed: the age of the stand's main tree species and characteristics that allow to determine the volume of each stand of the forest district or inspectorate using a stand growth model. Based on the age and stand volume, strata for the forest district or inspectorate can be formed and the number of samples for each of these strata can be determined. The main part of the new variant of the method starts with the measurement of DBH and tree height on the sample plots. The results of these measurements are then processed using, for example, a stand growth model. The volume of individual strata, age classes, and the entire forest district is determined. When using a growth model, many other stand characteristics are also determined, including volume increment, degree of windthrow hazard, rotation, and 10-year size of final and intermediate fellings. The evaluation of the accuracy of the method was based on data from 73 forest inspectorates in Poland. This was preceded by studies on the dispersion measures of the sum of tree volume on sample plots of different sizes. The new variant of the forest inventory method proved to be about 30% more accurate than the previously used variant.
