Opis:
Objectives Welding processes that generate fumes containing toxic metals, such as hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)), manganese, and nickel (Ni), have been implicated in lung injury, inflammation, and lung tumor promotion in animal models. Bronchiolar epithelium Clara cells/club cells, coordinate these inflammatory responses. Clara cells secretory protein (CC16) with ant-inflammatory role. Material and Methods The pulmonary toxicity of welding dust (WD) was assessed for Wistar rats exposed to 60 mg/m³ of respirable-size welding dust (mean diameter 1.17 μm for 1 and 2 weeks (6 h/day, 5 days/week)) or the aerosols of soluble form (SWD) in the nose-only exposure chambers. Additionally the effect of antiinflammatory betaine supplementation was assessed. Clara cells secretory protein, differential cell counts, total protein concentrations and cellular enzyme (lactate dehydrogenase – LDH) activities were determined in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, and corticosterone and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and prolactin concentrations were assessed in serum. Histopathology examination of lung, brain, liver, kidney, spleen was done. Additionally slices of brain and lung were exanimated in laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Results Both WD and SWD exposure evoked large bronchiolar infiltration shoved in histopathology examination. In this study, TBARS inversely correlated with a significant decrease of CC16 concentration that occurred after instillation of both WD and SWD indicating decreased anti- inflammatory potential in the lung. In WD exposed rats prolactin correlated with nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), LDH, TBARS and serum levels Cr, Ni and inversely with c-Jun. In SWD exposed rats prolactin correlated with CC16 indicated effect of prolactin on the population of epithelial cells. Conclusions In the current study, deleterious effects of repeated inhalation stainless steel welding dust form on club (Clara) cell secretory protein (CC16) were demonstrated. Clara cells secretory protein relation with prolactin in exposed rats to welding dust were shown and explored whether the NF-κB and c-Jun/activator protein 1 related pathway was involved. Opis:
Duplex Stainless Steels (DSS) and Super Duplex Stainless Steel (SDSS) have excellent integration of mechanical and corrosion properties. However, the formation of intermetallic phases is a major problem in their usage. The mechanical and corrosion properties are deteriorated due to the presence of intermetallic phases. These phases are induced during welding, prolonged exposure to high temperatures, and improper heat treatments. The main emphasis of this review article is on intermetallic phases and their effects on corrosion and mechanical properties. First the effect of various alloying elements on DSS and SDSS has been discussed followed by formation of various intermetallic phases. The intermetallic phases affect impact toughness and corrosion resistance significantly. Their deleterious effect on weldments has also been reviewed.

The dissimilar welds of AISI 304 to AISI 430 stainless steel was investigated by using gas tungsten arc welding. Three filler metals including ER309L, ER316L and ER2594 were applied. The weakest region of the welds was the heat affected zone of 430 stainless steel due to the formation of martensite. Also, the wide grain growth zone was observed in this side. The ferrite number for type 309L, 316L and 2594 weld metals was about 15, 32 and 57, respectively. The hardness and tensile strength values of the weld metals were higher than that of the heat affected zones and the base metals. The ferrite presented higher hardness values than the austenite in type 316L and 309L joints; while the hardness of austenite and ferrite was comparable in type 2594 weld metal.

Opis:
17-4PH stainless steel finds application in the aerospace industry owing to its good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. In the literature, this steel is described as good for welding, but research shows that it may be problematic due to the formation of defects. In this study, the welded joints were made by the robotic TIG welding method with various welding speeds (2 and 3 mm/s). The joints were subjected to non-destructive testing and were free from defects. The microstructure was observed by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Changes in the microstructure of the heat affected zone were observed and discussed. Based on the observation of the microstructure and the change in the hardness profile, the heat affected zone was divided into 4 characteristic regions. δ-ferrite and NbC were observed in the martensite matrix. The welded joints were subjected to heat treatment consisting of solution and aging in 550°C for 4 h. The microstructure of the heat affected zone become homogenized as a result of the heat treatment. The content of stable austenite in the welded joint after the heat treatment was about 3%.

Opis:
The automated laser welding process of 2.0 mm thick sheets of AISI 304 stainless steel was investigated. The disk laser with a beam spot diameter of 200 μm was used for bead-on-plate and next for autogenous butt joints welding. The influence of basic welding parameters such as laser power, welding speed, and focal spot position on fusion zone configuration, quality of joints, microstructure changes, and microhardness distribution across the joints were analysed and presented in this paper. The results have shown that stiffening of the 2.0 mm thick sheets is crucial for providing high quality and reproducibility of butt joint in a case of AISI 304 stainless steel due to relatively low thermal conductivity and simultaneously high thermal expansion. Relevant drop of microhardness in the weld zone was observed. The mean value of microhardness of the base metal was 230 HV0.1, while the microhardness in fusion zone of the test welds was ranged from 130 to 170 HV0.1. Additionally the microstructure changes in the weld metal and also in the heat affected zone of test joints is described.

The paper presents the results of research on the effect of the welding arc type on the content of δ ferrite, in the welded joint of 304 grade stainless steel. Based on the commonly used Schaefler diagram, the content of δ ferrite in the welded joint was estimated, and then these results were verified by comparing them with results obtained on specimens welded by different welding arc types, including the pulse arc. The obtained investigation results indicate some discrepancies between calculations made by analytical methods and the fraction of δ ferrite measured on the prepared specimens.

Opis:
A geometrical and a structural notch effect have the main influence on the local stress and strain concentration in the welded joints. These factors have a significant influence on the fatigue life of welded joints. This paper presents the results of the fatigue life tests of laser-welded joints of DUPLEX 2205 steel, taking into account the structural notch. The geometric notch in the form of face and root was removed. The Nd-YAG disk laser was used to weld butt joints. The welding process was conducted using two different parameters of welding without using additional material. The parameters were chosen based on previous studies (according to PN-EN ISO 15614-11:2005). In the study of the fatigue life of laser-welded joints, the geometric notch was ground out. Based on this research, the effect of welding parameters on the fatigue life was not observed. The fatigue cracks initiation and propagation occurred in the base materials in all cases. In addition, the results of the fatigue life of welded joints were related to the fatigue life of the samples taken from the parent material.
Karb geometryczny w postaci lica i grani spoiny usunięto. Złącza spawane czołowo wykonano przy użyciu lasera dyskowego typu Nd-YAG bez materiału dodatkowego dla dwóch różnych parametrów spawania. Parametry zostały dobrane na podstawie wcześniejszych badań (zgodnie z PN-EN ISO 15614-11: 2005) przeprowadzonych na złączach wykonanych kilkunastoma różnymi parametrami spawania. W badaniach trwałości zmęczeniowej połączeń spawanych laserowo pominięto karb geometryczny. Pozwoliło to na określenie optymalnych parametrów spawania laserowego stali typu DUPLEX 2205 ze względu na trwałość zmęczeniową powstałej podczas spawania struktury złącza. Dodatkowo otrzymane wyniki trwałości zmęczeniowych złączy spawanych odniesiono do trwałości zmęczeniowej próbek pobranych z materiału rodzimego.

Opis:
The work concerns the numerical modelling of coupled thermal and mechanical phenomena occurring in the laser beam welding process. Commercial Abaqus FEA engineering software is adopted to numerical computations in order to perform a comprehensive analysis of thermo-mechanical phenomena. Created in Fortran programming language additional numerical subroutines are implemented into Abaqus solver, used to describe the power intensity distribution of the movable laser beam heat source. Temperature dependent thermomechanical properties of X5CrNi18-10 steel are adopted in the numerical analysis of stress and strain states. Mathematical and numerical models are verified on the basis of a comparison between selected results of computer simulations and experimental studies on butt-welded joints. Numerical simulations are presented for steel sheet with a thickness of 2 mm. Temperature distributions, the shape and size of melted zone as well as residual stress and deformations are presented for analyzed elements. Numerically determined deflections are compared with the measured deflection of welded joint.
Praca dotyczy modelowania numerycznego sprzężonych zjawisk cieplnych i mechanicznych występujących w procesie spawania z zastosowaniem wiązki promieniowania laserowego. W celu przeprowadzenia kompleksowej analizy zjawisk termomechanicznych zaadaptowano do obliczeń numerycznych komercyjny pakiet oprogramowania inżynierskiego Abaqus FEA. W programie zaimplementowano dodatkową procedurę numeryczną utworzoną w języku programowania Fortran, służącą do opisu rozkładu intensywności mocy ruchomego źródła ciepła wiązki laserowej. W prognozowaniu numerycznym naprężeń i odkształceń uwzględniono zależne od temperatury własności termomechaniczne dla przyjętej w obliczeniach stali X5CrNi18-10. Weryfikacje modeli matematycznych i numerycznych przeprowadzono w oparciu o porównanie wybranych wyników symulacji komputerowej z badaniami doświadczalnymi połączeń spawanych doczołowo. Symulacje numeryczne spawania laserowego przedstawiono dla płaskownika o grubości 2 mm. Wyznaczono rozkłady temperatury, określono kształt i wielkość strefy przetopienia złącza spawanego oraz naprężenia własne i deformacje. Wyznaczone numerycznie ugięcia porównano z wynikami pomiarów ugięć połączenia spawanego.

In-situ study on the high-temperature fracture behaviour of 347 stainless steel was carried out by using a confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM). The welding microstructures of the 347 stainless steel were simulated by subjecting the steel specimen to solution and aging treatments. Undissolved NbC carbides were present within grains after solution treatment, and M23C6 carbides were preferentially formed at grain boundaries after subsequent aging treatment. The M23C6 carbides formed at grain boundaries worked as stress concentration sites and thus generated larger cracks during high-temperature tensile testing. In addition, grain boundary embrittlement was found to be a dominant mechanism for the high-temperature fracture of the 347 stainless steel because vacancy diffusion in the Cr-depleted zones enhances intergranular fracture due to the precipitation of M23C6 carbides at grain boundaries.

Opis:
This paper presents an investigation into effect of nitrogen content of shielding gas mixture on weld geometry, microstructure and hardness of pulsed laser welded 2205 duplex stainless steel. Full penetration autogenous welding was performed on 2 mm thick plates using a low power pulsed Nd: YAG laser. light and scanning electron microscopy were used to study the resulting microstructures. It is observed that 2 mm full penetrated joint decreases to 1.8 mm by dominating nitrogen in argon-nitrogen mixture. Different morphologies of austenite phase as well as an increase of 8% of its content can be observed in pure nitrogen shielded welds. Average weld grain size in sample which is welded in nitrogen atmosphere stands at approximately 41 μm which is smallerthan that of argon atmosphere which is about 51 μm. Micro-hardness test reveals that hardness values increase from 280 HV in base metal to 307 HV in weld center line and the shielding gas mixture does not significantly influence the weld hardness.
