This study investigated the influence of print orientation on the mechanical properties of 17-4 PH stainless steel parts fabricated using material extrusion technology. Tensile test specimens were 3D printed in different orientations (flat, on-edge, and upright), and their mechanical properties were evaluated. The results showed that the print orientation significantly affected the ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation at failure of the specimens. The flat and on-edge orientations exhibited similar mechanical properties, while the upright orientation resulted in lower strength and higher fracture susceptibility. Hardness measurements also indicated variations in hardness distribution among the orientations. The findings emphasize the importance of optimizing the print orientation parameter to achieve desired mechanical characteristics in 17-4 PH stainless steel parts.

Opis:
In-situ study of deformation behaviour and mechanisms occurring during early stages of deformation is of a great practical importance. Low stacking fault energy materials, as is the case of AISI 304L, show non-linear deformation characteristics way below the bulk yield point. Shockley partial dislocations, formation of stacking faults respectively, resulting in creation of shear bands and ε-martensite transformation are the mechanisms occurring in the low strains in the studied steel. Acoustic emission and infrared thermography have been used in this study to investigate the deformation kinetics at the low strain stages of slow strain rate tensile tests. Acoustic emission cumulative energy together with the tracking of specimen maximum temperature have been found to be very useful in-situ techniques both supplementing each other in the sense of the sensitivity to different mechanisms. Mechanical, acoustic emission and infrared thermography results are discussed in detail with respect to potential occurred mechanism.

The chapter presents the results of testing stainless steel and titanium alloy in terms of corrosiveness of these materials. The chemical composition of the samples was determined and potentiokinetic tests were carried out. The conducted tests showed that titanium is a better material used for exhaust systems in terms of susceptibility to corrosion.

316L steel specimens with three different shear zones made by SLM (Selective Laser Melting) were subjected to dynamic tests using the Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar method. The effect of high-speed deformation on changes in microstructure was analyzed. In addition, the stress-strain relationship was determined from the SHPB results. To visualize the deformation process of the specimens during the tests, a camera with a high frame rate was used. It was shown that as the plastic deformation increases, the hardness of the material increases. Microstructural analysis of dynamically loaded areas revealed numerous defects. Twinning was found to be the main deformation mechanism. Large plastic deformation and many other microstructural changes such as shear bands, cracks and martensite nucleation were also observed.
Próbki ze stali 316L z trzema różnymi strefami ścinania wykonane metodą SLM (Selective Laser Melting) poddano testom dynamicznym wykorzystując do tego metodę dzielonego pręta Hopkinsona (Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar). Przeanalizowano wpływ odkształceń o dużej szybkości na zmiany w mikrostrukturze. Ponadto na podstawie wyników badań SHPB wyznaczono zależność naprężenie- odkształcenie. W celu zobrazowania procesu odkształcania próbek podczas badań zastosowano kamerę o dużej częstości klatkowania. Wykazano, że wraz ze wzrostem odkształcenia plastycznego wzrasta twardość materiału. Analiza mikrostrukturalna obszarów obciążonych dynamicznie ujawniła liczne defekty. Stwierdzono, że głównym mechanizmem deformacji jest bliźniakowanie. Zaobserwowano również duże odkształcenia plastyczne i wiele innych zmian mikrostruktury, takich jak pasma ścinania, pęknięcia i zarodkowanie martenzytu.

The paper presents the results of research on the impact of the acidity of the environment on the corrosion resistance of X6CrNiTi18-10 steel after the boronizing process. The assessment of the corrosion resistance of the surface layer was carried out using the method of progressive thinning, which consists in performing corrosion tests on increasingly deeper areas of the layer. The use of such methodology in corrosion tests allows to track changes in individual parameters read from the potentiokinetic polarization curves and, consequently, to plot their depth profiles. The resistance of the boronized layer to general corrosion was tested in acidified sulphate solutions with three pH values: 1, 2 and 4. The structure and properties of the resulting surface layer were assessed on the basis of structural tests and microhardness changes on the cross-section of the surface-treated material. It has been found that the corrosion rate of the general surface layer is 3–4 times higher than the corrosion rate of core material, but only for strongly acidic environments. The characteristics of the passive state of steel deteriorate in particular, which is visible by the increase in the value of the critical passivation current, the minimum current in the passive range and by limiting the tendency to secondary passivation. For less acidic environments, boronization generally leads to deterioration of corrosion resistance, however, this deterioration is less than expected.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań dotyczących wpływu kwasowości środowiska na odporność korozyjną warstwy wierzchniej na stali typu X6CrNiTi18-10 po procesie naborowywania. Ocenę odporności korozyj nej warstwy przeprowadzono, wykorzystując metodę postępującego ścieniania, która polega na wykonywaniu testów korozyjnych na coraz głębiej położonych obszarach warstwy. Zastosowanie takiej metodyki w badaniach korozyjnych pozwala śledzić zmiany poszczególnych parametrów odczytywanych z potencjokinetycznych krzywych polaryzacji oraz wykreślić ich profile głębokościowe. Badania odporności na korozję ogólną warstwy naborowanej wykonano w zakwaszonych roztworach siarczanowych o trzech wartościach pH: 1, 2 i 4. Budowę i własności powstałej warstwy wierzchniej oceniono na podstawie badań strukturalnych oraz zmian mikrotwardości na przekroju poprzecznym obrobionego powierzchniowo materiału. Stwierdzono, że szybkość korozji ogólnej warstwy wierzchniej jest 3–4-krotnie większa niż szybkość korozji osnowy tylko dla silnie kwaśnych środowisk. Szczególnemu pogorszeniu ulegają charakterystyki stanu pasywnego stali, co uwidacznia się przez wzrost wartości krytycznego prądu pasywacji, minimalnego prądu w zakresie pasywnym oraz przez ograniczenie tendencji do pasywacji wtórnej. W wypadku środowisk mniej kwaśnych naborowanie prowadzi generalnie do pogorszenia odporności korozyjnej, jednak pogorszenie to jest mniejsze od oczekiwanego.

The paper presents the results of microstructural and mechanical investigation of long-term aged TP347HFG austenitic stainless steel. Ageing was performed at a time of up to 30 000 hours and the temperature of 600 and 650◦C. Ageing was proved to lead to the precipitation of secondary phase particles not only inside grains but also on the boundaries of grains and twins. The MX precipitates were observed inside the grains. However, M23C6 carbides and sigma phase precipitates were observed on grain boundaries. The changes in the microstructure of the examined steel translated into the mechanical properties, i.e. initially observed growth and then the decrease of yield strength and a gradual decrease in impact energy. The overageing process – a decrease in strength properties – was associated with the growth of the size of M23C6 carbides and the precipitation of the sigma phase. The reduction of impact energy in TP347HFG austenitic stainless steel was found to be associated with the precipitation of M23C6 carbides in the case of the 600◦C temperature, and the M23C6 carbides and sigma phase in the case of the 650◦C temperature. The rate of changes in the microstructure and mechanical properties depended on the ageing temperature.

The effect of aging time at 850°C for 300 s, 600 s, 1800 s, and 84600 s on the microstructural evolution and corrosion resistance of 2205 duplex stainless steel (DSS) was studied after cold rolling up to 60% of reduction. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy were used for microstructural characterization. The corrosion behavior was studied by cyclic potentiodynamic polarization (CPP) and electrochemical impedance technique (EIS) in 3.5% NaCl solution and the susceptibility to sensitization was investigated through the double loop electrochemical potentiodynamic reactivation (DL-EPR) test in 0.5 M H2SO4 + 0.1 M NaCl + 0.002 M KSCN solution. After cold working, increasing aging time led to an increase in sigma phase precipitation and a decrease in pitting corrosion resistance. However, the ultrafine microstructure had a beneficial influence on the self-healing effect in Cr and Mo depleted areas with the increasing of aging time, resulting in higher passivation ability. The DSS 2205 type was not susceptible to intergranular corrosion for the aged conditions applied.

Based on the experimental study of cavitation water jet impact on microforming, a single round hole micro-die was used in this paper. The effect of different process parameters on the performance of 304 stainless steel foil was examined, which involves the nanometer hardness, and elastic modulus. The nano-indentation tester was used to test the nano-hardness of the formed part, and the performance of the workpiece before and after the impact was analyzed. The nano hardness and elastic modulus increased significantly with an increase in the incident pressure. When the incident pressure was 20 MPa and the impact time of 5 min, the hardness increased by at least 122%, and the elastic modulus increased by at least 76%. After the cavitation water jet shocked the metallic foil of the SEM analysis and the results indicated that, as the incident pressure increases, the surface morphology of the formed part changes from approximately spherical to spherical, and the spherical roundness increases. In addition, there were different degrees of defects at the bottom of the formed part, and as the incident pressure increased, the bottom defects became more and more obvious, from micro-cracks to micro-layer cracks.

In this study, the bio state of the alloy produced in the modified metal injection system was monitored after sintering. A new system operating with high gas pressure, far from the traditional injection model, has been established for material production. In this system, 316L stainless steel powders were molded using a PEG/PMMA/SA polymer recipe. During molding, approximately 60% 316L and 40% binder by volume were used. The samples obtained were sintered at different temperatures (1100-1300°C) after de-binding. Density measurement (Archimedes) and hardness tests (HV1) of the samples were measured as 6.74 g/cm3 and ~285 HV1, respectively. A potentiodynamic corrosion test was applied to monitor the effect of the amount of oxide in the structure of the 316L stainless steel produced. Corrosion tests were carried out in artificial body solutions. The corrosion rate was measured at the level of 17.08×10-3 mm/y. In terms of biocompatibility, a cytotoxicity test was applied to the samples and the life course of the bacteria was monitored. For the 316L alloys produced, the % vitality reached approximately 103%.

In this research, the weld track geometry in wire-arc DED (directed energy deposition) of ER308L stainless steel was predicted and optimized. The studied geometrical attributes of weld tracks include weld track width (WTW), weld track height (WTH), and contact angle (α). The experiment was designed based on Taguchi method with three variables (current I, voltage U, and weld velocity v) and four levels for each variable. The ANOVA was adopted to evaluate the accuracy of the models and impact levels of variables on the responses. The TOPSIS method was utilized to predict the optimal variables. The results indicated that the predicted models were built with high accuracy levels (R2 = 98.92%, 98.77%, and 98.91% for WTW, WTH, and α, respectively). Among the studied variables, U features the highest effects on WTW and α with 78.56% and 69.90% of contribution, respectively, while v is the variable that has the most impact on WTH with 39.82% of contribution. The optimal variables predicted by TOPSIS were U = 23 V, I = 140 A, and v = 300 mm/min, which allows building components with stable and regular geometry.

This study aimed to investigate the effect of different coating processes on interlayer coating using ProCAST software and identify the preferred coating process so as to prepare an EH40/2205 composite plate with a coating interlayer of Ni-5 Fe-15 Co (wt.%) displaying good performance. The preparation and characterization tests were conducted to analyze the interlayer coating, the diffusion of elements at the bonding interface and the mechanical properties of the hot-rolled composite plate. The results showed that the coating rate increased linearly with an increase in the initial coating temperature, pressure difference and the width ratio of the suction layer. The interlayer coating was complete under the guidance of optimized process parameters, and the test results and simulations confirmed each other. The coated interlayer successfully blocked the diffusion of elements between the bonding surfaces. The tensile strength of the rolled composite plate was 580 MPa, which met the needs of the project. The tensile shear fracture occurred at EH40, which proved that the plate was well bonded.

Various types of metal implants, both in Poland and worldwide, are mainly manufactured from stainless steel due to their biocompatibility, strength, and relatively low price. However, any such procedure involves the risk of peri-implant infection, stimulated, among other things, by the formation of a bacterial biofilm on the surface of the implant. In this paper, several methods of modifying the surface of steel for medical applications were proposed, such as mechanical polishing, electropolishing, sandblasting, and the application of a thin surface layer. This was followed by a series of physicochemical and biological tests. The results indicate that the titanium nitride coating improved corrosion resistance and reduced bacterial adhesion on the surface. No significant improvement in abrasion was observed, and the adhesion of the coating closely depended on the method of preparation.
Implanty metalowe, zarówno w Polsce, jak i na świecie, produkowane są głównie ze stali nierdzewnej ze względu na jej biokompatybilność, wytrzymałość i stosunkowo niską cenę. Jednak każdy tego rodzaju zabieg wiąże się z ryzykiem powstania zakażenia okołowszczepowego, stymulowanego m.in. powstawaniem biofilmu bakteryjnego na powierzchni implantu. W pracy zaproponowano kilka metod modyfikacji powierzchni stali do zastosowań medycznych, takich jak polerowanie mechaniczne, elektropolerowanie, piaskowanie oraz nałożenie cienkiej warstwy powierzchniowej. Następnie przeprowadzono szereg badań fizykochemicznych i biologicznych. Wyniki wskazują, że powłoka azotku tytanu poprawiła odporność na korozję oraz ograniczyła adhezję bakterii na powierzchni. Nie zaobserwowano znaczącej poprawy ścieralności, a adhezja powłoki ściśle zależała od metody jej przygotowania.

Erosion by solid particles is a serious problem in many applications, especially in rotary machines with steel blades. Many coatings are currently being developed to improve erosion resistance. This study focuses on investigating the solid particles erosion (SPE) resistance of AISI 410 stainless steel and improving the SPE resistance using three different anti-wear techniques: hard coating (Ni-TiO2), hard coating with low shear resistance (Ni-TiO2-graphene) and hardening by heat treatment. The study also investigates the effect of different factors, including impact angle, jet pressure (particle speed) and solid particle type on each of the four types of specimens. The investigated anti-wear techniques improved the erosion wear rate by different percentages, such as 35.2% using Ni-TiO2 coating, 36% using Ni-TiO2-graphene, and 53.75% using heat-treatment when silica sand, a 45◦ impact angle and a speed of 36.72 m/s were used. The results indicate a ductile erosion mechanism as the weight loss decreases with an increase in the impact angle. The investigated coatings were found to provide more stable erosion resistance under different impact angles. Surface roughness was reduced after SPE for coated surfaces, and surfaces showing a lower wear rate may not necessarily show less change in surface roughness. It was observed that deformation in the form of waviness only occurs when the surface is impacted by small rounded particles at a 45◦ angle. Wear rate parameters were calculated, which can be used to estimate the wear rate for the investigated material under various conditions.

17-4PH stainless steel finds application in the aerospace industry owing to its good mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. In the literature, this steel is described as good for welding, but research shows that it may be problematic due to the formation of defects. In this study, the welded joints were made by the robotic TIG welding method with various welding speeds (2 and 3 mm/s). The joints were subjected to non-destructive testing and were free from defects. The microstructure was observed by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Changes in the microstructure of the heat affected zone were observed and discussed. Based on the observation of the microstructure and the change in the hardness profile, the heat affected zone was divided into 4 characteristic regions. δ-ferrite and NbC were observed in the martensite matrix. The welded joints were subjected to heat treatment consisting of solution and aging in 550°C for 4 h. The microstructure of the heat affected zone become homogenized as a result of the heat treatment. The content of stable austenite in the welded joint after the heat treatment was about 3%.

Opis:
Stainless steels are widely used for various automotive components. Some of them (e.g., parts of the exhaust system) are exposed to the external environment. In winter conditions, they are affected by chloride containing road salt solutions, which can lead to the local corrosion of these stainless steel parts. The presented paper is focused on the pitting corrosion resistance of two austenitic stainless steels (AISI 304 and AISI 316L) in 5 wt% and 10 wt% road salt solutions. The evaluation and comparison are based on the potentiodynamic polarization test method carried out at the temperature of 20 ± 2°C. The pitting potentials were determined from the polarization curves. Local corrosion damage of exposed surfaces caused by potentiodynamic polarization in the used solutions was observed by optical microscope. Experimental results confirmed a worse pitting corrosion resistance case, especially for AISI 304 stainless steel in 10 wt% road salt solution.
