Postural Stability Test
Opis:
Purpose: The aim of the study was to analyze postural stability in Parkinson's disease patients. A total of 32 subjects were tested, including 26 (81.25%) women and 6 (18.75%) men. These were patients with advanced, idiopathic Parkinson’s disease. The disease duration was over 5 years. Methods: The study was conducted in the Posturology Laboratory at the Department of Medicine and Health Sciences, Jan Kochanowski University in Kielce (Poland). The Biodex Balance System was used for evaluation of postural stability. Postural Stability Testing was performed with both feet positioned on a stable surface with the eyes open. Results: The Overall Stability Index in the whole group was 0.5°. The higher Overall Stability Index in women is indicative of slightly worse postural stability compared to men, although in both groups, it was within norms (Z = 2.0545, p = 0.0399). Anterior-Posterior Overall Stability Index (A/P) was an average of 0.35°. The Medial-Lateral Overall Stability Index (M/L) was an average of 0.27°. Both women and men were observed to have higher postural sway in the sagittal plane than the frontal plane. The vast majority of the subjects maintained in Zone A during testing (99.94%), and was slightly bent backwards to the right and in Quadrant IV (61.53%). Conclusions: Regular control of postural stability in Parkinson's disease patients is significant due to the risk of falls.

The paper presents the results of inhomogeneity of the temperature distribution and relative humidity inside the working space of two climate chambers. From the perspective of the calibration, the knowledge of the distribution of these parameters is critical for the value of the calibration uncertainty. The deviations of the parameter values in the separate tested areas from the value of the central point of the working space of the chamber parameter were determined. The made measurements confirmed the presence of non-uniform distributions of temperature and humidity inside the working space of the chambers. For the assessment of the quality of the control system, the knowledge of the dynamics of the changes in parameters is crucial. For this reason, the response characteristics of the system to the forcing of changes in temperature and humidity in time were experimentally specified. The temperature and humidity stabilization values were set for 25 ºC and for 50 %RH. The performed tests provided information about the areas of occurrence of the factors influencing the inaccuracy of the final result of the measurement inside the working space of the climatic chambers. The set values will allow assessing the quality of the measurement results obtained in the process of calibration through estimating the uncertainty of the measurement.

Recent research introduced the Discounting Inventory that allows the measurement of individual differences in the delay, probabilistic, effort, and social discounting rates. The goal of this investigation was to determine several aspects of the reliability of the Discounting Inventory using the responses of 385 participants (200 non-smokers and 185 current-smokers). Two types of reliability are of interest. Internal consistency and test-retest stability. A secondary aim was to extend such reliability measures beyond the non-clinical participant. The current study aimed to measure the reliability of the DI in a nicotine-dependent individuals and non–nicotine-dependent individuals. It is concluded that the internal consistency of the DI is excellent, and that the test–retest reliability results suggest that items intended to measure three types of discounting were likely testing trait, rather than state, factors, regardless of whether “non-smokers” were included in, or excluded from, the analyses (probabilistic discounting scale scores being the exception). With these cautions in mind, however, the psychometric properties of the DI appear to be very good.

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to carry out the Bayesian analysis of a two-phase regression model with an unknown break point. Essentially, there are two problems associated with a changing linear model. Firstly, one will want to be able to detect a break point, and secondly, assuming that a change has occurred, to be able to estimate it as well as other parameters of the model. Much of the classical testing procedure for the parameter constancy (as the Chow test, CUSUM, CUSUMSQ, tests and their modifications, predictions tests for structural stability) indicate only that the regression coefficients shifted, without specifying a break point. In this study we adopt the Bayesian methodology of investigating structural changes in regression models. The break point is identified as the largest posterior mass density, the peak of the posterior discrete distribution of a break point. It seems to work well with artificially generated data. The Bayesian framework also seems to be promising for extending the analysis of a single break to that of multiple breaks.

Opis:
BACKGROUND During half time or breaks in play cryotherapy is often applied for analgesia for minor musculoskeletal sport injury, however the effect of cryotherapy on dynamic stability is debated. A risk factor for further lower limb injury may be heightened due to a reduction in dynamic postural stability. OBJECTIVES The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effects of wetted-ice applied for 20-minutes at the ankle on dynamic stability using the star excursion balance test, immediately-post exposure and over a rewarming period of 30-minutes. MATERIALS AND METHODS Twenty-two healthy male athletes that regular took part in land-based sport were assessed on reach directions of Anterior (Ant), Posteromedial (PM), and Posterolateral (PL) using the modified star excursion balance test (mSEBT) on the non-dominant limb. Thermal imaging quantified skin surface temperature (Tsk) over lateral and medial regions. Participants were tested pre-intervention, exposed to 15-minutes wetted-ice cryotherapy application, immediately-post and up to 30-minutes post intervention at 10-minute intervals. RESULTS Significant decreases in Tsk over the medial and lateral regions of the ankle (p < 0.05) not returning to pre-cooling temperatures at 30-minutes post. Significant decrease in reach -distance scores (ANT, PL and PM) pre-immediately post and at 10, 20 and 30-minutes post cryotherapy exposure. CONCLUSION Following wetted ice application to the non-dominant ankle, dynamic postural stability was adversely affected for up to 30-minutes post exposure demonstrated through a decrease in reach scores for ANT, PL and PM directions. Functional performance which requires stabilising mechanisms may be negatively affected and contribute to a heightened risk of injury or further injury in consideration of the findings.

Opis:
The study objective was to evaluate the impact of a ten-day rehabilitation process on the change of the distribution of body mass and the load on the lower limbs, using the tandem balance test and the modified tandem balance test in a sitting position in stroke patients. The distribution of load on the lower limbs found its expression in the index, referred to as the Kwolek index, which was developed. It was calculated as the quotient of the greater value to the lesser one, both obtained in the tandem balance test; the normal limits ranged from 1.00 to 1.15. Material and methods. The test group comprised of 60 stroke patients. 30 people were qualified to the control group. The basis for the analysis was the measurements of the distribution of body mass and load on the lower limbs in the tandem balance test and in the modified tandem balance test. The distribution of body mass test was carried out on the first and last day of rehabilitation. The rehabilitation of ischaemic stroke patients involved comprehensive physiotherapy. Results. When analyzing the distribution of body mass symmetry before and after the therapy in both the control group and the test group, an increase in the number of people was observed in the groups with a lower Kwolek index, whereas a decrease was present in the number of people in groups with a higher Kwolek index. Conclusions. Comprehensive rehabilitation affects the improvement of the distribution of body mass.
Materiał i metoda. Badaniom zostało poddane 96 osób. Grupę badaną stanowiło 60 pacjentów po udarze mózgu. Do grupy kontrolnej zakwalifikowano 30 osób. Podstawą analizy były pomiary rozkładu masy ciała i obciążenia kończyn dolnych w teście dwóch wag oraz zmodyfikowanym teście dwóch wag (w pozycji siedzącej).

Opis:
The testing of dynamic balance involves tests that assess the muscle control of spatial changes of the position of the centre of gravity over the base of support. The purpose of this work was to determine the structure of the Y-balance test and its accuracy based on the measurements of strength performance of the muscles acting on the knee joint, as well as the flexibility and balance in boys aged 14 years. Methods: The study included 43 schoolboys regularly participating in physical education lessons. The examination of postural stability was conducted with the use of the Y-balance test. The measurements of muscle strength and of resistance to fatigue of the extensors and flexors of knee joints in isometric contraction were performed on a measurement stand in a standard position with the use of tensometric sensors. The measurement of mobility range of the lower extremity joints was performed according to the SFTR. The examination of balance was performed with the use of the modified ‘Flamingo balance test’. Results: The factor structure of the Y-balance test results for the left and right lower extremities is similar and includes five principal independent factors that characterise the structure of analysed variables. They explain 76% and 74% of communality in total for the left and the right extremity, respectively. Conclusions: The extracted factor structure points to a hybrid structure of the Y-balance test and shows its accuracy in the measurements of the lower limb joint mobility and strength performance of knee joint extensors.

Opis:
The subject of the article concerns the issues associated with thermal degradation of aviation fuels under high temperature conditions. Due to the intensive development towards increasingly higher thermal loads for both, turbine aviation engines, as well as the used fuels, the issue of thermal stability of the fuel itself is extremely important. In aviation, the fuel, apart from direct participation in energy generation during the combustion process of a fuel-air mixture, also takes part in the heat transfer in many aircraft systems. As a result, requirements in terms of the fuel’s thermal potential are increasingly higher. The standard method for determining the thermal stability of fuel executed on a JFTOT device proves to be insufficient in the context of the appearing issues in current operation. The article presents a non-standard approach to the assessment of aviation fuel thermal degradation with the use of a specialist test rig. The authors believe that the presented methodology and the measurement capabilities of the test rig are valuable supplementary material for the standardized thermal stability test. It allows more thoroughly understanding the phenomena undergoing in the fuel impacted by high temperatures. The article has been prepared within the research project no. 2011/01/D/ST8/06567 funded by the National Science Centre in Poland.

Opis:
The aim of the work presented in the article is to determine the effect of the type of fat and the variable protein content of algae on selected physicochemical properties of emulsions determining the stability of the disersion systems. Fat emulsions were prepared in the following three variants: based on hemp oil, based on a mixture of hemp oil and mutton tallow (1: 1) and based on the same fat mixture, but subjected to the enzymatic interesterification process (1: 1). The experimental part of the work included the preparation of animal fat by subjecting it to the bleaching process, and then enzymatic interesterification with hemp oil. Then, 9 variants of emulsions containing hemp oil, nonesterified fat mixture and interesterified fat mixture, respectively, were prepared. Each emulsion had a different algal protein content ranging from 0.4 to 1.2% by weight of the emulsion. The emulsions prepared in this way were tested 24 hours after their preparation and after 1 month of storage. The following parameters of the emulsion were assessed: color, texture, viscosity, and microscopic structure, and the intensity of the light backscattered by the sample was measured with the use of the Turbiscan Lab device. It was noticed that with the increase in the protein content of algae in the emulsions, there was an increase in the value of the b * parameter corresponding to the yellow color for all variants of these emulsions. There was also an increase in droplet size in microscopic examination and a decrease in the stability of the emulsions based on the interesterified fats. There was no unequivocal influence of the algae protein on the following parameters: emulsion adhesiveness, viscosity and hardness. In the study, it was not possible to select an emulsion with high stability, nor to indicate a clear influence of protein on the rheological properties of the emulsions produced, regardless of the type of fat used. In order to produce more stable systems, research should be extended to change the amount or type of protein, or to select a different viscosity modifier which, together with the algae protein, is able to create a synergistic system that stabilizes the dispersion systems produced.
Zakres eksperymentalnej części pracy obejmował przygotowanie tłuszczu zwierzęcego (łoju baraniego) przez poddanie go procesowi bielenia, a następnie przeestryfikowanie enzymatyczne z olejem konopnym.

The purpose of this work was to assess the differences of the values of body posture indices, measured with the Moire’s method, between girls and boys aged 13 and the relationships of these values with the results of the Y-Balance Test. Methods: The study involved a group of healthy volunteers attending junior high schools in Cracow. The group consisted of 20 girls and 35 boys. Basic somatic parameters were measured within this work: body height and weight. Body posture was assessed according to the general methodology of the Moire’s technique and 14 body posture indices were obtained as a result: 6 in the sagittal plane, 1 in the axial plane and 7 in the coronal plane. Postural stability was assessed with the Y-Balance Test (YBT). Results: The studied girls and boys had practically the same body posture – statistical differences were found only in 3 out of 14 assessed indices measured with the Moire’s technique. Scoliosis was found in as many as 51% of the subjects, however, mean values of deviations from the C7-S1 line were not large. Conclusions: In the group of girls, the set of blades (below – above) was statistically significantly correlated with the global YBT result for the right inferior extremity, and in the group of boys – the set of the waist triangles (below – above) was statistically significantly correlated with the global YBT results for the right and left inferior extremities.

Opis:
Since safety of navigation is related to the stability performance of a ship, the transverse stability is routinely calculated and measured. One of the crucial experimental approach is a roll decay test. Although, an obtained result of the roll decay test carried out on the full-scale ship needs to be compared to a benchmark enabling an estimation of the relevant stability. Nowadays such a benchmark is just based on the simplified GM-based IMO-recommended formula. This research aims at the more sophisticated method of ship’s natural period of roll estimation and thus her stability assessment. The CFD (computational fluid dynamics) technique is applied and the result of the free roll simulation is compared to the solution of a roll equation. The one degree-of-freedom roll equation is applied with regard to the nonlinear ship righting moment and the nonlinear damping moment obtained according to Ikeda’s method. The six degrees-of-freedom simulation of ship’s roll decay test was carried out by the use of FlowVision code utilizing the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equation with regard to the turbulent flows based on the eddy viscosity concept. The semi-empirical k-ε turbulence model was applied. Thereby, the CFD-based approach allows to get rid of any assumptions regarding the value of the damping coefficient, which is an advantage over the roll equation based approach.
