Aim: The purpose of the current study was to analyse the effect of life stress, competitive trait anxiety and sleep disturbance on injury susceptibility in football players. Methods: Participants were 67 male football players from different teams in Cologne ranging in age from 18 to 25 years (M = 21.09 years; SD = 2.69). Participants filled out four questionnaires: The Holmes-Rahe life stress scale, the sport competition anxiety test (SCAT), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Centre (OSTRC) questionnaire on health problems. Results: Results suggest that while life stress may increase the injury susceptibility, competitive trait anxiety, and sleep disturbance have no effect on injury susceptibility. Concerning this descriptive data, 53.7 % (36/67) of the players stayed away from the football field for at least one week, and about 23.8 % (16/67) of them did not have any injury during this four months’ period. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that high life stress levels caused athletic injury; for these reasons the psychological dimension should be considered and adapted in the training. Although we found no significant correlation between competitive trait anxiety, and sleep disturbance on injury susceptibility, longitudinal studies are required to assess the effect of life stress, anxiety, and sleep disturbance on injury susceptibility.

Medialna promocja sportu oraz jego komercjalizacja zmusiły zawodowych sportowców do znoszenia obciążeń treningowych przekraczających możliwości organizmu. W celu osiągnięcia jak najlepszych wyników, zaczęto wprowadzać do sportu wyczynowego coraz młodszych zawodników, których organizmy trudno znoszą nadmierne obciążenia treningowe. Ciągła pogoń za sukcesem, realizowana zgodnie z zasadą „cel uświęca środki”, doprowadziła do gwałtownego wzrostu liczby urazów i uszkodzeń narządu ruchu od drugiej połowy XX wieku.Cel pracy: celem pracy było zbadanie, jaki rodzaj urazu występował najczęściej wśród zawodowych siatkarek, jakiej okolicy ciała najczęściej dotyczył oraz czy powodował wystąpienie dysfunkcji w uszkodzonej części ciała.Materiał i metody: Badanie przeprowadzono na grupie 31 zawodowych siatkarek trenujących w polskich klubach orlenligowych i pierwszoligowych. W celu oceny rodzaju i częstotliwości najczęściej występujących urazów posłużono się ankietą autorską. W opracowaniu wyników wykorzystano program Statistica 10.0Wyniki: Wśród badanych zawodniczek 96,7% doznało w swojej karierze urazu. Większość kontuzji dotyczyła stawów w tym najwięcej skokowego (67,7%) i kolanowego (48,3%).Wnioski: Najczęściej występującym urazem wśród siatkarek trenujących wyczynowo były skręcenia stawu. Obszarem ciała, najczęściej ulegającym kontuzjom, był staw skokowy. Słowa kluczowe: uraz sportowy, piłka siatkowa, zwichnięcia, skręcenia ABSTRACTBackground: Professional sport is always integrally connected with injuries of body. Media promotion of sport and its commercialisation forces players to endure training load, which crosses their bodies possibilities. To achieving the best scores, people was starting to bring younger players to proffesional sport. Their bodies wasn’t completely formed and not be able to  match excessive training load. Unstoppable pursuit of success led to sudden increase of sport injuries since the second half of 20th century.Aim: The aim of this thesis is examination which kind of injury is generally appearance and in which part of the body it generally occurs.Material and methods: The thesis is conducted on a group of 31 professional women volleyball players from Orlenliga and first league. To assessment the kind and frequency of the most common injuries the own questionnaire has been used. In elaboration of results, the Statisctica 10.0 program has been used. Results: Among professional women volleyball players 97,6% had an injury. Injuries mostly concern joints, especially ankle and knee. Conclusion: The most common injuries in professional women volleyball is joint sprains. Injuries mostly occur in the ankle. Key words: sport injury, volleyball, dislocations, torsion joint.

Purpose The aim of this study was to determine frequency and distribution of sports- and recreation-related injuries (SRIs) affecting children and adolescents who visited a northern tier regional medical center emergency department during a 15-year period. Material and methods A descriptive epidemiologic design was employed to retrospectively examine age, gender, month and year of injury, location of injury, sport/recreational activity, mechanism of injury, type and severity of injury, hospital admission and length of stay. Frequency of reported injuries were compared in categories of single factors using Chi-square tests of homogeneity. The impact of risk factors – gender, age class, and sport/activity – on incidence ratios were analyzed via Poisson regression. All statistical analyses were run in R. Results Findings heretofore unreported or inconsistent with previous emergency department (ED) studies include a peak injury occurrence of SRIs during September; a preponderance of head/neck injuries and fractures and a higher percent of admitted patients; frequent occurrence of ice hockey injuries; increased severity of injury during ages 10-14; and a trend during 2000-2014 showing increased injury rate of various types of recreational injuries. Findings consistent with previous ED studies included variable distribution of injuries by age, gender and sport/activity; increased frequency of SRIs during ages 12-15 years and during the warmer months of the year; and trends of increased frequency of SRIs affecting females, increased injury rate of closed head injuries, and decreased occurrence of bicycle injuries during the study period. Further to these findings, several suggestions are made to inform and guide local injury prevention efforts and further research. Conclusions Our study results provide information on a region-specific occurrence and distribution of SRIs in a northern tier hospital catchment area that can be valuable to guide regional injury prevention efforts and further research to evaluate specific patterns identified and success of prevention efforts.

Introduction. Media publicity of sports and increased training have pushed the limits of the human body and have correspondingly led to an increase in the number of sports injuries. Incorrect play techniques, inadequate warm-up and other factors often lead to an increase in the number of injuries in Ultimate Frisbee. Aim. Assessment of the impact of gender, age and training experience on the incidence of injuries in Ultimate Frisbee. Material and methods. 110 people aged 16 to 35, regularly practising Ultimate Frisbee were included in the study. Of the 110 participants, 36 were women and 74 were men. The results were obtained by means of a questionnaire prepared by the authors which concerned sociodemographic data and questions about sports injuries. The incidence of injuries was analyzed in terms of the training experience, gender and age of the respondents. Statistical analysis was performed using STATISTICA 13.1. Results. Our research showed a relationship between sex and the site and type of injury. Age affects the main cause of the injury, and training experience influences the site and type of injury (p <0.05). The largest group of respondents were people training Ultimate Frisbee at least 3-4 times a week (62.73%). Conclusion. Sex and the training experience have a significant impact on the site and type of injury. The main cause of the injury depends on age; in the study group the most common cause of injury occurred when respondents were not complying with the rules and technique of the game.

Excessive physical activity is one of the main risk factors in the formation of degenerative changes of the intervertebral discs. Recreational and elite sport also represents a repeated increased physical load, and based on the type of sport, a more intense and sometimes less intense action of direct forces on the intervertebral discs. On the other hand, sport and training is in general regarded as beneficial for our health. Many doctors also regards sport as a form of prevention against back injuries. The authors analyze numerous sporting activities with different types of direct forces acting on the spine, with the goal to inform on realistic scientific facts regarding the impact of these activities on the degeneration of the intervertebral disc. They inform about the available facts, which confirm the positive effects of a certain type of sport load on the degeneration of the intervertebral disc, and its correlation with the clinically manifested back pain.

Imagery is an often used technique in psychological mental training and here also during rehabilitation. Imagery ability enhances imagery use. The perception of injury but also individual differences themselves influence the rehabilitation outcome. The first purpose of the study was to examine the mediation effect of injury perception between general imagery and rehabilitation imagery. Our second aim was to examine the mediating effects of the general ten dency to employ imagery within the relationship between personality and the imagery of rehabilitation itself. The studyinvolved 56 athletes (37 men and 19 women) suffered a physical injury. The respondents were asked to provide demographic information and then to complete following questionnaires: The Athletic Injury ImageryQuestionnaire-AIIQ-2, (Sordoni et al., 2002), The Imagination in Sport Questionnaire (Budnik-Przybylska, 2014) – short version, and Blecharz’s Scale of Perception of Injury in Sport (SPUwS) (Blecharz, 2008). Series of mediation analyses were performed to estimate the strength of the indirect relationship between the general tendency to use imagery and the use of imagery in rehabilitation. It was fund that the general tendency to use imagery turned out to have a strong direct effect on rehabilitation imagery. Reflection and seeking positive sides turned out to be a mediator between general tendency to use imagery and all rehabilitation imagery dimensions. Reflection has the strongest effect between the general tendency to use imagery and cognitive specific imagery. General tendency to use imagery mediates the relationship between personality and imagery of rehabilitation. Some personality traits also influence directly imagery of rehabilitation. Our findings have revealed that the general tendency to use ima - gery may strengthen the relationship between personality and rehabilitation imagery. It may help to adjust the methods which might positively influence the rehabilitation process.

Opis:
Introduction. Studies investigating the determinants of physical endurance were initiated nearly 30 years ago. The research was inspired by the curiosity to find out about the nature of talent for sport and why some athletes are better than others, despite the same or even greater effort in training routine, diet and the supplementation. An attempt was therefore made to determine the genotype of a perfect athlete, but conducted research showed that it is a very difficult task. Although 140 genes were proposed to affect of ideal sportsman fitness, scientists are still far from formulating answers about the nature of physical abilities and genotype. Aim. Our main goal was to review the literature about the selected genes and polymorphisms which are most often investigated in the context in relation to injury in sports. Materials and methods. Analysis of literature from US National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, PubMED, Google Scholar. Results. We review the selected genes and polymorphisms which are most often investigated in the context in relation to injury in sports, we also present the function of genetic variants prevalent in athletes which are able to achieve better physiological adaptation during the training. Conclusions. There are probably more than 140 genes involved in physical performance. Changes in even one nucleotide within the gene (SNP) can improve the body’s adaptation to better physical performance and the frequency of injury to athletes.

Purpose: The essential function of mouthguards is protection against the effects of injuries sustained during sports activities. This purpose will be successfully achieved if appropriate materials ensuring sufficient reduction of the injury force are used for mouthguard fabrication. Objective: The objective of the study was to investigate the force reduction capability of selected materials as well as to identify which material reduces the impact force to the highest degree. Methods: The material for the study were samples of polymers (6 samples in total), obtained during the process of deep pressing (2 samples), flasking (3 samples) and thermal injection (1 sample), which were tested for impact force damping using an impact device – Charpy impact hammer. The control group comprised of the ceramic material samples subjected to the hammer impact. The statistical analysis applied in this study were one-way Welch ANOVA with post-hoc Games-Howell pairwise comparisons. Results: The test materials reduced the impact force of the impact hammer to varying degrees. The greatest damping capability was demonstrated for the following materials: Impak with 1:1 powder-to-liquid weight ratio polymerized with the conventional flasking technique, and Corflex Orthodontic used in the thermal injection technique of mouthguard fabrication. Conclusions: Impak with 1:1 weight ratio and Corflex Orthodontic should be recommended for the fabrication of mouthguards since they demonstrated the most advantageous damping properties.

Drawing on careers spanning over 35 years in the field of ethnography, we reflect on the research in which we’ve engaged and how the practice and epistemology of ethnography has evolved over this period. We begin by addressing the problematic nature of ethical issues in conducting qualitative research, highlighting the non-uniform nature of standards, the difficulty of applying mainstream or medical criteria to field research, and the issues raised by the new area of cyber research, drawing particularly on our recent cyberethnography of self-injury. We then discuss the challenge of engagement, highlighting pulls that draw ethnographers between the ideals of involvement and objectivity. Finally, we address the challenges and changing landscapes of qualitative analysis, and how its practice and legitimation are impacted by contemporary trends in sociology. We conclude by discussing how epistemological decisions in the field of qualitative research are framed in political, ethical, and disciplinary struggles over disciplinary hegemony

While the epiphyseal stress fracture of the finger’s middle phalanx is a known sport-specific injury occurring only in adolescent climbers, and in other locations it’s rare, no femoral neck stress fracture (FNSF) in sports climbing has yet been reported. An experienced female sport climber (37y, 160 cm, 45 kg, BMI 17.5) suffered from pain in the left inguinal region while climbing, and later, also required a stick to walk. Routine radiography missed the FNSF and it was many weeks before a MRI accurately provided that diagnosis. The time between the X-ray and MRI should have been minimized as it resulted in a delayed diagnosis, unnecessary pain and delayed healing. In this situation the initial clinical investigation, the patient’s history and the X-ray did not lead to a clear diagnosis, and the initial treatment was ineffective. Further investigation by MRI and / or CT scans should have taken place sooner and would have been essential.

Background: The most common risk factors for running-related injuries are mistakes, such as insufficient warm-up and stretching exercises, during training. Good preparation and proper training reduces the risk of sport-related injuries. Aim of the study: To examine fundamental movement patterns and likelihood of injury in amateur runners. Material and methods: Twenty-four amateur long-distance runners from Opole region (Poland) were divided into two groups. The first group comprised 12 runners from the club “Kotwica Brzeg”, who did a proper warmup before training and stretching exercises after training. The second group comprised 12 runners from other clubs who did not undertake any warm-up or stretching exercises (control group). Fundamental movement patterns were tested by the Functional Movement Screen test (FMS). Results: The mean FMS test score was higher in “Kotwica Brzeg” runners (17.08 points) than in the control group (15.50 points), but this was not statistically significant. The “Kotwica Brzeg” runners performed better in five of the FMS tests, but this was only significant for the rotational stability test. Conclusions: Runners who did a proper warm-up and stretching exercises achieved better results in the FMS test, which may reduce the risk of running-related injuries.

This article covers the topic of the grounds for civil liability in the case of injuries suffered while doing sports. This issue is very important, as injuries constitute an inherent element of physical activity. The focus of the article is on a tort liability. It is pointed out that the act has to be fi rst recognised as unlawful to be considered a tort. That is why the article tries to answer the question, which behaviours should be considered illegal. This is infl uenced by such issues as: the breach of sports rules, the consent of an injured person, and the situation where such person acts at his/ her own risk.
