The paper focuses on the semantic analysis of lexical borrowings of English origin used in informal spoken Polish. The study is based on the corpus, collected and analyzed by the present author. First, general information is given about the corpus, followed by the description of the methodological problems associated with studying lexical loans in spoken language. The main part of the paper focuses on the description of the loans found in the corpus. Special attention is paid to the newest borrowings, not noted in the dictionaries of Polish and/or dictionaries of foreign terms.

The present article analyses trigrams – words constructions that have properties of phrasemes. The studied trigrams have been excerpted from task-oriented dialogues (conducted between participants of a linguistic experiment). It turns out that phrasematic trigrams perform different communication and semantic functions: establishing and enhancing contact, feedback positive, “simple adverbiality” and “complex adverbiality”. The article is a follow-up to the author’s previous article on bi-grams: Bi-grams – Repetitive Two-word-structures in Task-oriented Dialogues.

Obiektem tekstu jest polska mowa codzienna w opinii nosiciela języka bułgarskiego. Celem jest ujawnienie najbardziej wyrazistych cech polszczyzny mówionej według obserwatora zewnętrznego. Cechy te ujawniają się przy zestawieniu norm używania języka polskiego z bułgarskimi normami mowy. Dla Bułgara polska codzienna komunikacja werbalna jest źródłem licznych zdziwień, ponieważ zauważa on znaczące różnice w porównaniu z używaniem języka w rodzimym społeczeństwie. Różnice te dotyczą rozmaitych aspektów języka polskiego i zachowań językowych Polaków. Ogólnie, według Bułgara mowa polska w sposób wyrazisty prezentuje archaiczny stan słowiańszczyzny, jest ona bardzo uprzejma, dialog jest pełny i przewidywalny, w zakresie wyrażania relacji społecznych przeważa tendencja podtrzymywania dystansu między rozmówcami, a mowę Polaków charakteryzuje socjalizacja obiektu mowy. Bardzo dziwi Bułgara zasada „aktualnej przeszłości” (wyróżniania określonej osoby tytułem, który jest już nieaktualny) oraz zasada „podwyższania stopnia zawodowego” (zwracanie się do obiektu mowy (lub mówienie o nim) w sposób, który wynosi go w hierarchii na pozycję wyższą niż mu jest właściwa). Poczucie znaczących różnic u nosiciela języka bułgarskiego powodują również zjawiska z zakresu językowego obrazu świata, np. asymetrie polsko bułgarskie w zakresie metaforyzacji językowej.
This article revolves around some peculiarities of Polish colloquial speech from the perspective of a speaker of Bulgarian. Its aim is to reveal the most peculiar features of Polish colloquial language as seen by a foreign observer. These features are depicted through a comparison between the norms of colloquialisms in Polish and Bulgarian. To a Bulgarian, Polish colloquial verbal communication can be a source of surprise as the use of language in Polish and Bulgarian tends to differ significantly. These differences refer to various aspects of the Polish language and linguistic behaviour as displayed by Poles. In general, to a Bulgarian Polish language is a distinct representation of an archaic stage of Slavic languages, more polite, with full and predictable dialogues and maintain a distance between the interlocutors in expressing social relations. The language spoken by Poles tends to socialize the object of speech. A Bulgarian native speaker is often astonished by the principle of “the living past” in Polish (referring to somebody with an obsolete title) as well as the principle of “raising the professional status” (referring to or speaking about people in a way raising their position above the actual professional hierarchy). A speaker of Bulgarian spots significant differences in the realm of the linguistic worldview, e.g. Polish-Bulgarian asymmetries in the process of metaphorisation.

The article discusses the problems associated with segmented into separate sentences the stream of spoken language. There are both: theoretical problems (what is utterance?, what are its boundaries?, what are the theoretical proposals for the segmentation of utterances?), and practical problems (where is the real border between the two utterances in spoken language?, what criteria of segmentation stream of spoken language can be used?). The language material – which is the basis for the research presented in this article – comes from twenty task-oriented dialogue sessions with the participation of forty speakers performing a specific task. As a result of the analysis, based on available positions and theoretical reflection I managed to develop a tool for syntactical segmentation of the stream of spoken language. This tool can be presented in the form of a new (innovative) concept of definition of the utterance.

Niniejszy artykuł omawia składniowy status polskiego zaimka wskazującego ten w ramach teorii gramatykalizacji. W pierwszej części artykułu zostały ustalone kryteria formalne (morfoskładniowe) i semantyczne pomocne w odróżnianiu zaimków wskazujących od przedimków. Następnie przedstawione zostały argumenty potwierdzające status zaimka wskazującego omawianego elementu. Ostatnia część artykułu jest poświęcona przedimkowym właściwościom zaimka ten. Pomimo że podstawową funkcją tej części mowy jest funkcja zaimka wskazującego, artykuł pokazuje, że ten zdradza również cechy przedimkowe szczególnie w potocznym języku polskim.
The paper discusses the syntactic status of the Polish demonstrative pronoun ten ‘this’ in the light of grammaticalization theory. The discussion begins with establishing formal (morphosyntactic) as well as semantic criteria for discriminating between articles and demonstratives. Then it reviews arguments for the demonstrative status of ten put forward in the literature. The paper ends with providing evidence for the definite article status of ten. Although the primary function of ten is still that of a demonstrative pronoun, it reveals some traces of categorial change on the grammaticalization cline in spoken Polish.

This article presents and verifies material embedded in the awareness of users of Polish spoken in the southern part of Eastern Borderlands of the country across generations. The close relation between Polish and Ukrainian languages is conducive to the emergence of numerous interferences. Inclusion of Ukrainian features into the Polish system took place in the course of many centuries of contacts with speakers of the Ukrainian language. Ukrainian subdialects have left their mark on the Polish language in the southern part of Eastern Borderlands also in formations which deviate from the literary language. In the Polish language under scrutiny – the language spoken on the Polish-Ukrainian borderland, some formations follow Ukrainiansubdialects and the entire Eastern Slavic area. A majority of adverbs have a structure compliant with the general Polish language. However, there are also different formations, typical of borderland subdialects.

Autor omawia i porównuje poglądy językoznawców polskich na temat powstania i rozwoju r frykatywnego (ř) w języku staropolskim i rozwoju r frykatywnego (ř) w różnych odmianach języka polskiego. Nie można wykluczyć, że niektórzy badacze mylili brzmienie ř z rž. Dlatego postuluje się przebadanie istniejących nagrań gwar polskich i kaszubskich z wykorzystaniem nowszych programów komputerowych. Należy również ustalić podobieństwa i różnice w realizacji ř w języku czeskim i w niektórych gwarach polskich oraz kaszubskich.
The author discusses and compares the views of Polish linguists on the origin and development of the fricative r (ř) in Old Polish and the development of the fricative r (ř) in various regional dialects of the Polish language. It cannot be ruled out that some researchers mistakenly confused the sound ř with rž. Therefore, a proposal is put forward to analyse the existing recordings of Polish and Kashubian dialects by means of more modern computer software. The similarities and differences in the realization of ř in the Czech language and in some Polish and Kashubian dialects should also be investigated.

In this paper, I wish to present the complexity of Jewish-Polish relations from the 19th century until the interwar period, with emphasis on sociolinguistic issues. I will illustrate the circumstances of the contact between the Polish and Hebrew languages. Poles and Jews, who lived side by side, developed successful relationships, but mainly in the criminal underworld. That was reflected in a sociolect – a dialect of criminals that constituted a mixture of Polish, Yiddish, Russian, and several other languages, including quite a few Hebrew words, which with time adopted new meanings. Moreover, I will provide some examples of Hebrew words used in Polish criminal jargon, as well as those which have been coined in every-day Polish. Then I will refer to some Hebrew words that are not connected with a world of crime and are still in use in spoken Polish.

The paper discusses the normative aspects of the Polish language presently used in the Ukraine by the speakers of Polish descent living there as well as by the Ukrainians who learn Polish as a foreign language. The problems relating the objectively defined language norms for Polish used abroad are analysed in the context of the contemporary debate on solutions proposed within the realm of prescriptive linguistics in Poland. The author suggests extrapolating the conception of a twin-level language norm adopted in Poland for the two discussed cases of Polish spoken in the Ukraine. The author advocates the universally obligatory nature of the Standard Polish language ideal norm. At the same time, he considers expanding the scope of the real norms for foreign Polish language varieties for the speakers of Polish of foreign descent. Also emphasized is the need for developing a set of didactic language norms for the Ukrainian learners of Polish.

Punktem wyjścia artykułu jest normatywne przekonanie, że niektóre spójniki, jak bo i ale, są właściwe mowie i w niej należy je stosować, a niektóre, jak ponieważ i lecz, są właściwe dziełom pisanym. Przekonanie to sprawdzono na materiale, na który złożyły się losowo dobrane krótkie teksty z filozofii, językoznawstwa, literaturoznawstwa, psychologii, publicystyki, krytyki literackiej oraz teksty popularnonaukowe o języku. Wyjściowe mniemanie okazało się mylne: spójniki bo i ale występują w przejrzanych tekstach o wiele częściej niż ponieważ i lecz. Postępowanie badawcze miało kilka etapów: 1) identyfikacja zastanych przekonań, 2) określenie wątpliwości, ustalenie odmiennego punktu widzenia, 3) zgromadzenie materiału, 4) badanie, 5) wyniki, 6) interpretacja, 7) wnioski. Autor sądzi, że schemat takiego postępowania badawczego nadaje się do stosowania na lekcjach języka polskiego.
The starting point of the article is the normative belief that some conjunctions, such as because (bo) and but (ale), are typical of speech and should be used in it, and others, such as because (ponieważ) and yet (lecz), are appropriate for written works. They were tested on the material of randomly selected short texts from philosophy, linguistics, literary studies, psychology, journalism, literary criticism and popular science texts about language. The research procedure had several stages: 1) beliefs, 2) doubts, different points of view, 3) material assembly, 4) study, 5) results, 6) interpretation, 7) conclusions. The author believes that this scheme is suitable for use in Polish lessons. The initial idea turned out to be wrong: conjunctions because (bo) and but (ale) occur in the reviewed texts much more often than because (ponieważ) and yet (lecz).

In this article the authors investigated and presented the experiments on the sentence boundaries annotation from Polish speech using acoustic cues as a source of information. The main result of the investigation is an algorithm for detection of the syntactic boundaries appearing in the places of punctuation marks. In the first stage, the algorithm detects pauses and divides a speech signal into segments. In the second stage, it verifies the configuration of acoustic features and puts hypotheses of the positions of punctuation marks. Classification is performed with parameters describing phone duration and energy, speaking rate, fundamental frequency contours and frequency bands. The best results were achieved for Naive Bayes classifier. The efficiency of the algorithm is 52% precision and 98% recall. Another significant outcome of the research is statistical models of acoustic cues correlated with punctuation in spoken Polish.

AdamaMickiewicza w Poznaniu, którzy uczestniczyli w kursie języka migowego na poziomiepodstawowym (A1). Analizy pozwoliły wskazać na te aspekty przestrzeni, któresą szczególnie kłopotliwe dla rodzimych użytkowników języka mówionego.
This paper’s aim is to provide a list of mistakes in the use of space insign language communication that are most widely committed by students learningPolish Sign Language. The authors have analyzed video materials collected amongstudents of the Polish philology at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań whoparticipated in the A1 course of the Polish Sign Language. Aspects of space that areparticularly troublesome to native users of spoken language are presented.

The author discussed the concept of communication strategies and the two most popular research approaches: interactive and sociolinguistic. She presented strategic activities of students learning Polish as a second language, which appeared during the classes held at the Polish Language Center for Foreigners at the University of Lodz, both during the observation of the lesson and during the classes conducted by the author. These strategies included: achievement strategies (paraphrase, comparison, simplification, use of synonyms, neologisms, and language code switching), help request, non-verbal means, and avoidance strategies. The author also discussed examples of negotiating meanings and the use of modern technologies as a helpful tool in applying communication strategies.
Autorka omówiła pojęcie strategii komunikacyjnych oraz dwa najpopularniejsze podejścia badawcze: interakcyjne i socjolingwistyczne. Przedstawiła działania strategiczne uczących się języka polskiego jako obcego, które pojawiały się podczas zajęć odbywających się w Studium Języka Polskiego dla Cudzoziemców Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego zarówno w trakcie obserwacji lekcji, jak i podczas prowadzonych przez autorkę zajęć. Wśród omówionych strategii znalazły się: strategie osiągnięć (parafraza, porównywanie, uproszczenie, stosowanie synonimów, tworzenie neologizmów oraz przełączanie kodu językowego), prośba o pomoc, użycie środków niewerbalnych oraz strategie uniku. Autorka omówiła również przykłady negocjowania znaczeń oraz wykorzystywanie nowoczesnych technologii, jako narzędzia pomocnego przy stosowaniu strategii komunikacyjnych.

The so-called "indigenous" Polish speech in Latvia in the pre-war period from the perspective of its native users (basing on the 1922–1940 local press)The article stems from the author’s interest in the pre-war Polish press in Latvia. It is based on press materials, whose authors – for different different reasons – used language in their opinion typical for the spoken Polish dialect used by the lower classes. The collected data show the features that are treated by the Polish minority in Latvia as the most typical or most noticeable in their speech. The texts where the use of regional variation of Polish was conscious and purposeful exhibit a range of distinctive features at all levels of language. These features hardly ever occur in the press articles that have been written in standard Polish. The analysis of the texts provided a starting point for the present study. The purpose of the research was to determine the attitudes of writers and editors towards the local Polish dialect, its role in shaping the national identity and its significance in the lives of its users. «Здешняя» польская речь в Латвии в довоенный период в глазах носителей языка (на материале прессы, издаваемой в 1922–1940 годах)Проблематика данной статьи обусловлена нашим интересом к польской прессе, издаваемой в Латвии в период 1922–1940 годов. Базой для исследования послужил языковой материал, извлеченный из газетных статей (фельетонов), авторы которых по разным причинам употребляют язык, наиболее, по их мнению, соответствующий разговорной речи общественных низов. Анализ исследуемого материала показал, какие языковые явления поляки в Латвии считали самыми характерными и отличительными чертами своего языка, поскольку фельетоны, в которых нагромождение диалектных речевых особенностей было преднамеренным, содержат большое количество примеров таких явлений на всех уровнях языка, чего не замечено в остальном, гораздо более обширным, газетном материале. В статье преследовалась и другая цель – определить отношение создателей и редакторов польской прессы в Латвии к «здешнему» польскому говору, роль последнего в качестве исключительно важного компонента национального самосознания и место его в системе духовных ценностей носителей польской речи в Латвии.

Artykuł dotyczy kompetencji składniowej oraz jej niedostatków w polszczyźnie mówionej cudzoziemców. Autorka przedstawia i omawia pod względem poprawności składniowej spontaniczne wypowiedzi studentów z Angoli, zebrane podczas obserwacji lekcji języka polskiego jako obcego w Studium Języka Polskiego dla Cudzoziemców UŁ. Zestawienie wypowiedzi poprawnych z błędnymi pozwoliło zaobserwować, które zagadnienia składniowe nie sprawiały cudzoziemcom trudności, a które były dla nich miejscem trudnym w polskiej składni.
The article discusses syntactic competence and its shortcomings in Polish spoken by the foreigners. The author presents spontaneous utterances of the students from Angola, and analyses these utterances from the point of syntactic correctness. The utterances have been collected during observations of Polish language classes at the School of Polish for Foreign Students at the University of Lodz. The comparison of correct utterances with incorrect ones shows which syntax issues were not problematic for the foreigners, and which aspects of Polish syntax caused some difficulty.
