Opis:
A graph G = (V,E) is called a split graph if there exists a partition V = I∪K such that the subgraphs G[I] and G[K] of G induced by I and K are empty and complete graphs, respectively. In 1980, Burkard and Hammer gave a necessary condition for a split graph G with |I| < |K| to be hamiltonian. We will call a split graph G with |I| < |K| satisfying this condition a Burkard-Hammer graph. Further, a split graph G is called a maximal nonhamiltonian split graph if G is nonhamiltonian but G+uv is hamiltonian for every uv ∉ E where u ∈ I and v ∈ K. Recently, Ngo Dac Tan and Le Xuan Hung have classified maximal nonhamiltonian Burkard-Hammer graphs G with minimum degree δ(G) ≥ |I|- 3. In this paper, we classify maximal nonhamiltonian Burkard-Hammer graphs G with |I| ≠ 6,7 and δ(G) = |I| - 4.

We continue the study on backbone colorings, a variation on classical vertex colorings that was introduced at WG2003. Given a graph G = (V,E) and a spanning subgraph H of G (the backbone of G), a λ-backbone coloring for G and H is a proper vertex coloring V→ {1,2,...} of G in which the colors assigned to adjacent vertices in H differ by at least λ. The algorithmic and combinatorial properties of backbone colorings have been studied for various types of backbones in a number of papers. The main outcome of earlier studies is that the minimum number l of colors, for which such colorings V→ {1,2,...,l} exist, in the worst case is a factor times the chromatic number (for path, tree, matching and star backbones). We show here that for split graphs and matching or star backbones, l is at most a small additive constant (depending on λ) higher than the chromatic number. Our proofs combine algorithmic and combinatorial arguments. We also indicate other graph classes for which our results imply better upper bounds on l than the previously known bounds.

There is a long line of research in the literature dedicated to word-representable graphs, which generalize several important classes of graphs. However, not much is known about word-representability of split graphs, another important class of graphs. In this paper, we show that threshold graphs, a subclass of split graphs, are word-representable. Further, we prove a number of general theorems on word-representable split graphs, and use them to characterize computationally such graphs with cliques of size 5 in terms of nine forbidden subgraphs, thus extending the known characterization for word-representable split graphs with cliques of size 4. Moreover, we use split graphs, and also provide an alternative solution, to show that gluing two word-representable graphs in any clique of size at least 2 may, or may not, result in a word-representable graph. The two surprisingly simple solutions provided by us answer a question that was open for about ten years.

A bipartite-split graph is a bipartite graph whose vertex set can be partitioned into a complete bipartite set and an independent set. The bipartite- splittance of an arbitrary bipartite graph is the minimum number of edges to be added or removed in order to produce a bipartite-split graph. In this paper, we show that the bipartite-splittance of a bipartite graph depends only on the degree sequence pair of the bipartite graph, and an easily computable formula for it is derived. As a corollary, a simple characterization of the degree sequence pair of bipartite-split graphs is also given.

Opis:
Twin vertices of a graph have the same open neighbourhood. If they are not adjacent, then they are called duplicates and contribute the eigenvalue zero to the adjacency matrix. Otherwise they are termed co-duplicates, when they contribute −1 as an eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix. On removing a twin vertex from a graph, the spectrum of the adjacency matrix does not only lose the eigenvalue 0 or −1. The perturbation sends a rippling effect to the spectrum. The simple eigenvalues are displaced. We obtain a closed formula for the characteristic polynomial of a graph with twin vertices in terms of two polynomials associated with the perturbed graph. These are used to obtain estimates of the displacements in the spectrum caused by the perturbation.

We show that every 3-regular circle graph has at least two pairs of twin vertices; consequently no such graph is prime with respect to the split decomposition. We also deduce that up to isomorphism, K4 and K3,3 are the only 3-connected, 3-regular circle graphs.
