This article aims to explore and justify the usefulness of the category “history” as used in spiritual theology. Following an introduction to the main subject, the initial section shows the importance and usefulness of this category in contemporary theology, as dealt with by the theology of history. In the main section, the article discusses four fields in which the category of “history” lends its functionality to spiritual theology: biblical spirituality, liturgical spirituality, worldly commitment, and spiritual development. This section also explains how the category of “history” is operative in each of these fields. The last section of the article is a synthetic outline of the results of the research.

The article is the report from the scientific symposium organised by the Association of the Polish Theologians of Spirituality of the theme: Spiritual life in reborn Poland. This year Poland will be celebrating the centenary of the regaining of its independence. It becomes a great occasion to look at that period of history from the perspective of the theology of spirituality. Numerous figures of saints and blessed from that period of history as well as richness of various publications in the topic of theology of spirituality, with special underlining of the subjects characteristic for the Polish spirituality fully justify the using of the name Polish theology of spirituality.

The purpose of this article is to present the development of Thomas Aquinas’sconcept of joy in the subsequent parts of Summa theologiae. Beginning with thedescription of joy as simple movements of the soul, Thomas comes to present theconcept of spiritual joy, which is fundamental to the human visio beatifica. Therefore,the article is divided into three parts, which discuss Aquinas’s accounts ofjoy: Prima secundae, Secunda secundae and Tertia pars. The first part focuses onthe inclusion of joy as experience and feeling. Joy here is understood as one of thefeelings of the sensitive power is considered in the perspective of human emotionality(vis concupiscibilis). Joy that comes from satisfying the lack of sensory goodsis called pleasure (delectatio). It differs from the joy of affection (gaudium) – theintellectual and spiritual affrct, to which the second part of the article is dedicated.Spiritual joy does not include the sensory-corporal component, and it superimposesitself over purely intelligible beings. Thomas clearly emphasizes that only Godcan be the cause of spiritual joy. This perspective allows Aquinas to develop hisconcept of theology of joy in the next part of Summa (III pars), which is devotedin the last part of this text. The emotionality of Christ is the central problem forThomas here. These considerations throw a lot of light not only on the supernaturalapproach to joy, but also on the ways in which joy – the fruit of the Holy Spirit canbe experienced by a human being in hac via.

This article aims to present Joseph Razinger’s Christocentric approach to the question of the relation between faith and reason. Modernity introduces the separation between faith and reason, which results in the limitation of reason and the subordination of logos to ethos. This disunity, however, between faith and reason and the primacy of the ethos over logos affects the nature and mission of theology. In contrast to the loss of the integrative harmony between faith and reason, Joseph Ratzinger argues for the distinction and unity between faith and reason built upon the primacy of logos and a Christocentric approach. The author also intends to prove that although Ratzinger describes his theology as “fragmentary” and “incomplete,” he has gifted the Church with a renewed theological symphony that flourishes only in conjunction with the gift of faith working in concert with reason. In Ratzinger’s view only faith can enable reason to overcome the self-imposed limitation developed by modern thinkers such as Immanuel Kant. Finally, the article will demonstrate that the crowning achievement of Joseph Ratzinger/Benedict XVI’s theology is the recognition of the primacy of love as embodied by the saints who are witnesses of the transformative power of knowing and loving Jesus, the Incarnate Logos.
W niniejszym artykule przedstawiona zostanie kwestia relacji między wiarą a rozumem w ujęciu Josepha Ratzingera. Nowoczesność wprowadza rozdział między wiarą a rozumem, co skutkuje ograniczeniem rozumu i podporządkowaniem logosu etosowi. Ten brak jedności między wiarą i rozumem oraz prymat etosu nad logosem wpływa następnie na naturę i misję teologii. Wbrew temu postulowanemu brakowi integrującej harmonii między wiarą a rozumem, Joseph Ratzinger dowodzi jedności wiary i rozumu jako całości zbudowanej na prymacie logosu i podejściu chrystocentrycznym. Autor artykułu zamierza udowodnić, że chociaż Ratzinger określa swoją teologię jako „fragmentaryczną” i „niekompletną”, to zostawił Kościołowi nowatorską „symfonię” teologiczną opartą na połączeniu daru wiary z rozumem. Wykazane zostanie, w jaki sposób – według Ratzingera – wiara może umożliwić rozumowi przezwyciężenie ograniczeń narzuconych przez współczesnych myślicieli, takich jak Immanuel Kant. W ostatniej części artykułu pokazane będzie, że ukoronowaniem teologii Josepha Ratzingera/Benedykta XVI jest uznanie prymatu miłości uosabianej przez świętych, którzy świadczą o przemieniającej mocy poznania i miłości do Jezusa, Wcielonego Logosu.

Teologia liturgiczna odwołuje się najpierw do liturgii kosmicznej, przyjmując jednak za punkt wyjścia konkretną celebrację liturgiczną. W tym przypadku jest to celebracja Eucharystii. Bardzo ważnym zadaniem teologii liturgicznej jest jej funkcja ewangelizacyjna. Teologia liturgiczna postrzega ewangelizację jako objawianie Chrystusa-Liturga kosmosu, wzywającego ludzi do życia z Bogiem i dla Boga oraz zapraszającego ponownie ludzi do bycia liturgami kosmosu z Nim i w Nim. W takim ujęciu zadaniem homilii, jako integralnej części celebracji, jest sakramentalne uobecnianie Misterium Chrystusa, które zostało spełnione jako duchowa ofiara posłuszeństwa Bogu Ojcu i miłości do rodzaju ludzkiego. Ofiara ta znalazła swą kulminację w krwawej ofierze na krzyżu, dokonanej raz na zawsze. Pierwszym szczególnym zadaniem homilii we Mszy św. jest wezwanie do posłuszeństwa Bogu na wzór Chrystusa i złożenia tym samym ofiary duchowej, czyniąc w ten sposób uczestników współofiarnikami wraz z Chrystusem. Jest to podstawowy warunek participatio actuosa w Eucharystii. Drugim specyficznym zadaniem jest wskazanie na potrzebę osobistej komunii z Chrystusem, która swą kulminację osiąga w Komunii św., a przedłuża się na czas po celebracji. Trzecim najważniejszym zadaniem homilii jest ukazanie celebracji – kultu Boga jako paradygmatu całego życia chrześcijańskiego, aby stawało się życiem dla Boga.
The liturgical theology refers first to cosmic liturgy, accepting, however, as its starting point, the actual liturgical celebration. In this case it is the celebration of the Eucharist. A very important task of the liturgical theology is its function of evangelization. The liturgical theology perceives evangelization as reveling Christ-Liturgician of the cosmos, calling people to live with God and for God, and inviting people again to be liturgicians of the cosmos with Him and in Him. With such an approach, the task of the homily, as an integral part of the celebration, is a sacramental manifestation of Mystery of Christ, which was fulfilled as a spiritual sacrifice of the obedience to God the Father and of love towards the human kind. This sacrifice found its culmination in the bloody sacrifice on the cross, which was made once and for all. The first special task of the homily in the Holy Mass is the call for obedience to God, according to the example of Christ, and hence for making a spiritual sacrifice; in this way the homily makes the participants co-sacrificers, together with Christ. This is the fundamental condition of participatio actuosa in the Eucharist. Another specific task is to point to the need of a personal communion with Christ, which reaches its culmination in the Holy Communion, and is prolonged to the time after the celebration. The third most important task of the homily is to present the celebration – the cult of God, as the paradigm of the whole Christian life, so that it becomes a life for God.

Artykuł przedstawia współczesną refleksję nad wyodrębnioną z nauk teologicznych w XX wieku – teologią duchowości. Wyjaśnia jej empiryczny charakter, który polega na badaniu doświadczenia duchowego konkretnych ludzi – czy to bezpośrednio (przez obserwację), czy też pośrednio (poprzez teksty). Analizując wybraną współczesną literaturę, artykuł ukazuje różne koncepcje możliwości teologicznego poznania doświadczenia. Przybliża metody badawcze stosowane aktualnie przez teologów duchowości (obok metod tradycyjnych: dedukcyjnej, opisowej, fenomenologicznej). Artykuł ukazuje proponowane nowe metody, ocenia je i grupuje w sposób następujący: a) metody poznawania poprzez osobiste doświadczenie; b) metody obserwacji; c) metody interpretacji tekstów – hermeneutyczne; d) metody stanowiące zasadę scalającą. Poprowadzona w ten sposób analiza współczesnej refleksji dotyczącej empirycznego charakteru duchowości, prowadzi no następujących wniosków: a) dostrzega się wiele prób poszukiwana nowych, bardziej szczegółowych metod poznawania doświadczenia duchowego ludzi; b) teologia duchowości inspiruje się w tym wieloma naukami humanistycznymi; c) wielość metod podkreśla wielowymiarowość ludzkiego doświadczenia, misterium ludzkiej osoby; d) przy skupieniu się tylko na jednej metodzie szczegółowej, istnieje niebezpieczeństwo redukcjonizmu; e) potrzebna jest jakaś metoda scalająca wszystkie inne metody – wydaje się, że może być nią metoda personalistyczna. System personalistyczny przyjmuje, że kluczem hermeneutycznym do rozumienia wszelkiego doświadczenia jest misterium osoby.
The article shows a contemporary reflection on spiritual theology. The field of spiritual theology became abstracted from the theological studies in the XXth century. The article explains its empirical nature, which consists in examining the spiritual experience of specific people – either directly through observation or indirectly through written texts. While analysing the chosen contemporary literature, the article presents different conceptions of possible theological examination of an experience. It also explains scientific methods which are applied by spiritual theologians (besides the traditional methods: deductive, descriptive, phenomenological). The article shows suggested new methods, evaluates them, and groups them in the following way: a) methods of learning through personal experience; b) methods of observation; c) methods of text exegesis – hermeneutic; d) methods representing merging principle. Such an analysis of a contemporary reflection on spiritual theology leads to the following conclusions: a) one can notice many attempts of searching for new, more thorough methods of examining the spiritual experience of people; b) spiritual theology is inspired in this point by many human sciences; c) the multitude of methods stress multidimensionality of human experience, a mystery of a person; d) while focusing on only one particular method, one is in danger of reductionism; e) there is a need for a method that would merge all the others – it seems that a personalistic method could serve this purpose. The personalistic system assumes that the hermeneutical key for understanding any experience is a mystery of a person.

The spiritual life constitutes an integral experience of any person being led by the Holy Spirit toward full communion with God. It is never something abstract, divorced from Sitz im Leben, in either the psychological aspect or the socio-cultural dimension, thus it always bears certain signs of one’s temperament, environment, and history. The present paper proposes a methodology of research into the natural basis of the spiritual life (psychological and socio-cultural), which influences the way God’s grace is received and experienced. The natural structures of the spiritual life constitute the ground, which is submitted to God’s salvific action and bears fruit in various forms. The description of the spiritual life demands the use of the appropriate methodology, which can be based on the combination of the doctrinal-sapiential (deductive) approach and the existential-anthropological (inductive) approach. An important auxiliary role in the description of the spiritual phenomenon can be played by psychological methods, for instance those that derive from the psycho-biographical approach, which allows us to capture what is unique in human functioning.

Teologia słowa Bożego stanowi jeden z wątków przewodnich całej teologii Josepha Ratzingera, a poniekąd jej zwieńczeniem jest adhortacja Verbum Domini, która będąc wprawdzie rezultatem kolegialnej refleksji nad słowem Bożym podjętej przez Synod Biskupów, nosi także wyraźne rysy osobistych poszukiwań i teologicznych przekonań Benedykta XVI. W artykule autor zwraca uwagę na najbardziej kluczowe, głównie o charakterze dogmatycznym, aspekty tego zagadnienia odczytywane w świetle adhortacji Verbum Domini. W jego pierwszej części wyjaśnia istotę i specyfikę faktu, że „Bóg mówi do człowieka”. Zakorzeniając się w działaniu Boga na rzecz człowieka, słowo Boże ma charakter sakramentalny. Dopełnieniem tego wymiaru słowa Bożego jest jego ścisła więź z działaniem Ducha Świętego, który wpływa na jego przekazywanie, spisanie oraz interpretację. W kolejnej części artykułu autor omawia kwestię przekazywania słowa Bożego. Określa również działanie Ducha Świętego w relacji do słowa Bożego. Trzecia część opracowania zajmuje się zagadnieniem odpowiedzi udzielanej Bogu przez człowieka. Charakter słowa Bożego domaga się od niego przede wszystkim wiary jako warunku i sposobu jego rozumienia oraz jej przeżywania zarówno w wymiarze indywidualnym, jak i wspólnotowym. Analiza poszczególnych punktów adhortacji w odniesieniu do teologii posoborowej pozwoliła na ukazanie zasadniczego znaczenia słowa Bożego w życiu każdego wierzącego, jak i wspólnoty Kościoła.
The theology of the word of God is one of the leitmotifs of Joseph Ratzinger’s entire theology, and in a way its culmination is the apostolic exhortation Verbum Domini, which, although being the result of a collegial reflection on the word of God undertaken during the Synod of Bishops, also bears the unmistakable mark of Benedict XVI’s personal theological search and conviction. In this article, the author highlights the most crucial aspects, mainly of a dogmatic nature, of this problem read in the light of the exhortation Verbum Domini. In its first part, he explains the essence and specificity of the fact that „God speaks to man.” Rooted in God’s action on behalf of man, His word has a sacramental character. Complementing this sacramental dimension of God’s word is its close relationship with the action of the Holy Spirit, which influences the word’s transmission, writing and interpretation. In the next section of the article, the author discusses the transmission of the word of God. He also defines the action of the Holy Spirit in relation to the word of God. The third part of the paper deals with the response that might be given to God. The nature of the word of God demands, first of all, faith as a condition and way of understanding and living it both individually and communally. The analysis of individual points of the exhortation in relation to post-conciliar theology has made it possible to show the fundamental importance of the word of God in the life of every believer as well as the community of the Church.

The commentary focuses on Gould’s idea of NOMA, according to which science and theology are two Non-Overlapping Magisteria. The term “non-overlapping” is appropriate because methods of validation of claims in these two fields of intellectual investigation. are different, not because the areas of investigation should be different. The author was once an active atheist, in Poland; now he is a practicing theist, belonging to a Reform synagogue in the United States. He thinks that Gould’s idea, if universally accepted, could help to reduce intensity of dangerous doctrinal confrontations between theists and atheists, and between different groups of theists. The commentary ends by a quote from a statement about desirable collaboration between religion and science, made by Pope John Paul.

In the sphere of bodily focus on sensuality, which, because of their condition appears to be a hurdle in union with God and therefore calls for purification. In the spiritual realm are: the soul and the spirit, and the spiritual power of intellect, memory and will. They are of fundamental importance in the relationship of man to God. The article raises the question of “apetitos” as disordered human attachments.

This article presents a diversity of major psychospiritual concepts in the works of Gerald Gordon May (1940–2005), half-brother on the renowned existential psychologist Rollo May. Unlike his brother, Gerald May has not penetrated the thought-provoking mainstream psychology of religion and spiritual theology. In the present text, we attempt to indicate some possible reasons for this, while also presenting him as a unique and insightful interdisciplinary author, exceptionally linking psychology and spiritual theology whose ideas were probably too advanced to be well accepted in his time. In order to argue in favor of this thesis separately from his diagnosis of the misuse of spirituality in contemporary society, the cornerstones of May’s contemplative psychology will be presented under headings such as unitive experiences, spiritual longing, and, their fruit, spiritual surrender.
Artykuł przedstawia główne koncepcje na styku psychologii i teologii duchowości w pracach Geralda Gordona Maya (1940–2005), przyrodniego brata bardziej znanego psychologa egzystencjalnego Rollo Maya. Ponieważ idee Geralda Maya nie przeniknęły do głównego nurtu psychologii religii oraz teologii duchowości, w niniejszym tekście autor wskazuje kilka możliwych przyczyn takiego stanu rzeczy. Prezentuje jednocześnie istotne elementy spuścizny Maya, ukazując go jako oryginalnego badacza pracującego na granicy psychologii i teologii duchowości o bardzo wnikliwym spojrzeniu na człowieka, którego idee były prawdopodobnie zbyt zaawansowane na swój czas. Aby argumentować na rzecz tej tezy, rozpoczynając od diagnozy instrumentalizacji duchowości we współczesnym społeczeństwie, zostały przedstawione zręby psychologii i teologii kontemplacyjnej Maya, czyli unikalne ujęcie doświadczenia mistycznego, opis duchowych pragnień człowieka oraz ich potencjalny owoc, którym jest całkowite poddanie się Bogu.

The main predicament presented in this article lies in the complexity found in the internal structure of the human being when one searches for key elements that define its essence and uniqueness. The overview begins with empirical research as exemplified in psychology, continues in presenting chosen theories in modern philosophy, with an accent on the phenomenological method, and subsequently puts forward the synthesis of them both in psychotherapy. The last part is dedicated to theology as a distinct way to uncover what the essence of being human is, as based on divine Revelation; the latter is the only one of the presented sciences to be explicitly aware of the source of the mystery at the basis of being human. This article attempts to compare the research end results of chosen approaches by demonstrating their relationship to the most hidden aspects of being human. The analysis is organized around the concept of recognizing and accepting the place of mystery in the understanding of what are the most essential elements in the human being. As a result, psychology is conceptualized as a science that does not allow mystery; theology, however, is found to underline the presence of mystery in relationship to our divine origins.

The author of this article, based on the accounts of the blessed Dorothy of Montau [Dorothea von Montau] (1347–1394), a medieval mystic, related by a theologian and confessor John of Kwidzyn [Joannes Marienwerder] (1343–1417), in a little work entitled Septililium, firstly, analyzes the degrees of spiritual life in order to present the degrees of supernatural love against such background, which were part of the experience of the recluse from the cathedral church in Kwidzyn. Spiritual life as a relationship of love with God encompasses an entire life. The pluralism of aspects is very rich. Traditionally understood religious life goes through the process of cleansings of the senses, then, the acceptance of the virtues of faith, hope and love, in order to enter a path of contemplative prayer and mystical communion. Love is the essence of spiritual life. The blessed Dorothy of Montau enjoyed a gift of seven graces: the gift of love, the gift of the Holy Spirit, the love of the Eucharist, contemplation, perfectness of life and the gift of penitence. God is worthy of perfect love. The Master of Kwidzyn mentions more degrees and characteristics of that love recognized in the theological reflection and mystical acts of the blessed Dorothy of Montau. The love of God should be: “wide” so in the love of God it is loving all men, then, “ordered”, as well as “limitless.” Perfect love as spiritual disposition is “continuous”, “deeply rooted”, “brave”, “constant”, then, “heated”, “on fire and wanting”, “ascending high”, i.e., exceeding the love of man and “overwhelming” as the one leading to God by the way of Commandments, the wandering from “virtue into virtue” and “the path of advice” of the Holy Spirit. The perfect love according to God’s inspiration is the highest elevation of the human spirit strengthened by God that is why it has the features of “hurt”, it is “unsettling”, “impatient”, and even surprisingly “crazy”, “sweet”, “greedy”, always “insatiable”, and since it is limited by human existence, it is thus “longing”, “intoxicating”, “enriching”, “cheering up”. Spiritual love must radiate. Joannes Marienwerder employs the word “gushing”, it is ample so it is “overflowing” every man and it is, of course, “wise”, as well as “invincible”, is not subject to “fatigue”, it is “impossible to lose”, “immortal”, “great and heart-breaking”. Finally, in the treatise entitled On Love by the blessed Dorothy of Montau as many as thirty six degrees of love are listed and briefly characterized.

The role of divine power in Aquinas’s spiritual doctrine has often been neglected in favor of a focus on the primacy of charity, the controlling virtue of spiritual progress. The tendency among some thinkers (e.g. Polkinghorne) to juxtapose divine love and power stems from the stress on divine immanence at the cost of divine transcendence, and from an evolutionary (vs. classical) view of God with its ‘kenotic’ theodicy. A study of the ways in which divine power grounds and directs the spiritual life highlights the robust role that metaphysics plays in spiritual ascent for Aquinas, and offers a philosophical entry point to his doctrine. Themes in his doctrine of the spiritual life incorporate Platonic transcendent causal plenitude and Aristotelian causal axioms and motifs of growth and unity. From the side of theology, divine power is analyzed through several lenses, including power through weakness in Christ, the sin of Lucifer against the gift of being in contrast to the counsel of obedience, and the role of Christ’s human nature in the Church. Taken together, these themes combine to characterize divine power as redemptive medicine, as opposed to a distant, arbitrary force, and to reveal the ways in which Aquinas applies metaphysical insights to the supernatural order.

The article presents a first academic approach to a poem by Carlos Garrulo («El latido del bosque. 1 – GÉNESIS. Libro de orígenes y germinaciones», Ediciones Universidad Católica Silva Henríquez, Santiago-Chile, 2008, 144 pages). The poem is the first of nine biblical reflections on the “wood” whose rustlings it wants to be perceived, as though going in search of a living truth, destined to live on in the future. It is an attempt to discover what can be found in Don Bosco which has the flavour of originality and novelty, or the power of a seed which once sown bursts to life, grows, and, in its maturity with the passing of time, is capable of germinating and perpetuating in the newness of today, in this way contributing to the re-awakening and rejuvenating of the world in the monotony of its old and daily rhythm. In the poem one can see a fragment of poetical-spiritual theology in action, a field of freedom without limits, aimed at an understanding which is prophetic not priestly, of the biblical exodus, whose presentation invites us to a “resurrection” of the charism and of the holiness of Don Bosco in these first years of the XXI century. This first analysis would lead to the affirmation that the poem of Garrulo is subject to an anthropology with characteristics similar to those of the prophets of Israel. One can see that it is a work unique in its own kind, which expresses realism and modernity together with a clarity of perspective for the future and a great beauty in order to profess a purified love of Don Bosco and his mission.
