Opis:
The aim of the article is to present thematic motifs that appear in funeral speeches given by lay people. These speeches have the form of a one-sided narration, shaped to create the best possible picture of the deceased. The author analyses seven contemporary funeral speeches which were recorded during funeral ceremonies while saying farewell to deceased Polish politicians. The speeches discussed are characterized by a considerable degree of concentration on the achievements of the deceased. Focusing on deeds – especially in laudation – is a way of cementing the memory of a person who has influenced a certain community. The funeral speech, as a genre pattern, performs the function of sustaining memory about a particular person, whose picture acquires the form of a tendentious, deformed verbal monument. It does not only present the figure of the deceased, but also evaluates their achievements in an individual and collective dimension. The assessment in both cases is designed by the speaker and is often detached from the real social feelings. The speeches under analysis are a type of occasional speeches with not only invariant stylistic and structural features (which have been pointed out in scientific or advisory literature many times), but also invested with standard and repetitive thematic threads.

Opis:
Speeches and persuasion dominate Plato’s Crito. This paper, paying particular attention to the final passage in the dialogue, shows that the focus on speeches, persuasion and allusions to many other elements of rhetoric is an integral part of Plato’s severe criticism of democracy, one of the main points of the Crito. Speeches allow members of a democracy – represented in our dialogue by Crito – firstly to break the law for self-interested reasons while considering themselves still to be law-abiding citizens, and secondly to feel that they are in a tolerant society preferring logos/persuasive speech above bia/compulsion. Socrates counters Crito’s speeches with speeches of his own, not only to defeat him at his own game, but also to make him aware how dangerous the game is. Real knowledge is preferable to speeches, but a democracy without speeches and rhetoric is doomed.

Primate of Poland, Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński, in his teaching paid special attention to such notions as Church and Homeland. He focused on the value of the event, which was the Baptism of Poland in 966. Masovia was one of the stops on which the Nation’s faith was awakened, as well as the awareness of free and responsible man, creating history based on law and morality of the Decalogue. Primate was visiting Płock many times, during different occasions. He was preaching a word, which like the biblical grain was supposed to fall on the soil of human hearts and bring fruit. Historical and cultural role of Masovia, as a borough constituting an integral part of Polish state since its beginning and its contribution to culturalreligious development of Poland, was particularly emphasised during two Primate’s speeches: during millennial solemnities in 1966 and during the jubilee of a diocese in 1975. Primate Stefan Wyszyński, while talking about Masovia, emphasised its high position in building the State and the Church. Invoking figures, important for Masovia (bishops, priests, princes), he always pointed to the values, which they represented, and which were timeless. What Primate of Poland Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński said in Płock Masovia and about Masovia was fully reflected in the words of the Saint John Paul II uttered on 7 VI 1991 during his stay in Płock – “Płock has profoundly rooted in the history of Poland and the Church” – emphasising the role of this city, the capital of historical Masovia, in the millennial history of our Homeland.

The paper deals with German pragmatic phrasemes, i.e. routine and conversational formulas, used in parliamentary speeches as “texts of public debate” (Klein 2009:2115). The aim of the article is to investigate what formulas are typical of parliamentary speeches and what function they perform. Thus, the article aims to provide an insight into linguistic formulaicity manifested in this text type. The empirical basis consists of 40 parliamentary speeches made by MPs in German Bundestag. The qualitative analysis of the research material was performed using MAXQDA software.

Opis:
Quintilian begins the 30th chapter of the 11th Book claiming the rules of oratory declamation are identical with the rules of word art. Pronuntiatio will be more clear if, above all, words will be spoken whole and not swallowed or omitted. According to Quintilian, well-chosen pronuntiatio is adjusted to the topic of the speech. For the most part it is driven solely by emotions and the orator’s voice rises and resounds. Voice, which is a kind of mediator between us and our audience, will reach the judges in the same shape it leaves us. Next the author of Institutio oratoria devotes a large passage to gesticulation as it complements voice and is obedient to the commands of mind. In plays written for performance on the stage the masters of oratory declamation find inspiration for expressing emotions also from the characters of a drama. This is why in tragedy Merope is sad, Medea is terrifying, Ajax is benumbed and Hercules is aggressive. In laudatory speeches, with the exception of funeral ones, the words should be flowery, magnificent and exalted in order to express thanks, encouragement etc. The funeral speeches, consolations and most of defensive court speeches are characterized by pain and humility. When we speak in senate we need to be authoritative, when in front of the people – dignified, when in private affairs – moderate. Pronuntiatio should have three qualities: it should cause good will, convince and affect, as this is how delight can be naturally evoked. Favour of the audience can be won either by praise of character, which is mysteriously revealed in the voice and gesticulation of an orator, or by the charm of style. Quintilian ends Book 11th with a remark that moderation plays the most important role. His aim is to form an orator, not a comedian. This is why he does not recommend to search for all the subtleties of gesticulation, nor to use classifications, rhythms or emotional states in the way of speaking. He is right when he criticises pronouncing words with exaggerated face expressions, distracting gesticulation and abrupt changes of tone. An orator should control his speech, aiming to achieve elegance and style and yet not to lose the authority of a noble and dignified man.

The aim of the paper is to investigate, firstly, to what extent the linguistic means of emphasis, such as lexical and syntactic ones, correspond to prosodic means of emphasis and secondly, how the text producers express their emotions in the emphasized text passages. The aim of the paper is to investigate to what degree the linguistic means used to emphasize a certain element in the text are received by German native speakers. The research is based on a purpose designed questionnaire consisting of two excerpts taken from parliamentary speeches in Bundestag. The questionnaire was administered to 55 German philology students at the University of Leipzig. The students’ task was to read the excerpts carefully and then to decide which elements in the text were emphasized by its author. The fi ndings of the study indicate how different means of textual emphasis (syntactic, lexical and rhetorical ones) are recognized by the students.

This paper aims at collecting and investigating, from a rhetorical point of view, the speeches of the Achaemenid kings (from Cyrus to Xerxes) mentioned in Greek sources, with a special focus on Herodotus’ Histories. The many and heterogeneous discourses which this historian attributes to the different Persian kings (dialogues, private conversations, messages, letters and simple speech acts) are analysed and compared, and the research seems to point to some recurrent – and probably well-devised – patterns. The paper also takes into account the poetic speeches of Darius and Xerxes in Aeschylus’ Persians, and the scant evidence (a letter from Xerxes to Pausanias) transmitted by Thucydides.

The language of populists uses arguments of strong power of persuasion resulting not from their rationality but from, first of all the degree of emotions present in the transmission. Populism assumes promoting political ideas consistent with expectations of majority of the public in order to achieve their support, influence them or to gain power. As the parliament election results show, the number of right-winged parties including right-wing populists in Europe has been rising recently. The common constituent in their narration of the world is the language which is strictly connected with promoting a specific system of values. The subject of this paper is the analysis of the right-wing language, an attempt at capturing its typical features and at reconstructing the right-wing image of the world promoted by politicians during their meetings with voters.

In this summary, it is essential to highlight that in his statements, J. Kaczyński touches upon a narrow range of subjects. He uses merely 12 nouns on a regular basis (issue, politics, Poland, Prime Minister, democracy, law, society, country, opposition, truth, economy (or finance) and prices). He rarely addresses foreign policy issues and fails to specifically refer to historical facts. However, it is impossible not to notice his critical assessment of the Polish government's actions. The most prominent subject of Kaczyński's speeches are the current state of democracy in Poland. This sentiment is best captured by the quotation “it is a practice [here: about the actions of the Polish Sejm - author's note] which does not fit into the framework of democracy”. This tone is used to refer to the alleged breaching of opposition's law, which points out the terrible condition of Polish democracy. Kaczyński's speeches paint the picture that the basic provisions of democracy being broken. Among his claims are alleged lying to the society by those in power, lack of control mechanisms over the institutions guiding the country's actions, inequalities in Polish political procedure, and, most importantly the breaking of the laws of the opposition.

Opis:
This article seeks to answer the question whether features of media language can be discerned in the utterances of the younger generation and, if so, which ones. The oral presentations performed during the secondary school final examinations(obtained from the recordings) were studied. They have never been analysed in this respect before. The presentations have, on the one hand, an official character and, on the other, are spontaneous as they are produced on an ad hoc and continuousbasis, with no possibility of predicting their final shape. First, the article reviews the characterisation of media language by researchers working on the subject in order to establish a group of the most distinctive features that may be present in students’ expressions. An analysis of the material carried out at the cognitive, structural, and linguistic levels is then presented, which has made it possible to discern the presence of certain features of the media variety of language, including superficiality and fragmentation, definiteness, associativeness, and colloquiality. The paper is concluded with a statement that the changes that are taking place in the language (and therefore in the thinking) of the younger generation are becoming a challenge for educational didactics, which should provide contemporary schools with more effective models of language education, taking into account thecurrent expansion of media literacy.

Opis:
Marcin Kromer (1512-1589), sekretarz ostatnich królów polskich z dynastii Jagiellonów – Zygmunta I Starego i Zygmunta II Augusta, biskup warmiński, był wybitnym humanistą i cenionym historiografem. Kromer pisze o tym w łacińskich praefationes do wydania dwóch pierwszych rozmów w języku łacińskim z 1559 r. i do kompletnego wydania, noszącego tytuł Monachus, sive Colloquiorum de religione libri quattuor... z 1568 r. We wstępach pisze też o powodach stworzenia łacińskich wersji dialogów, a w wydaniu z 1568 r. wspomina o pracy z tekstem.
Martinus Cromerus (1512-1589), the secretary of last Polish kings from Jagiellonian dynasty: Sigismundus I and Sigismundus II Augustus, bishop of Warmia, was distinguished humanist and appreciated historiographer. His work was part of a polemic dialog with Reformation. Between 1541-1544 four anonymous volumes of Rozmowy Dworzanina z Mnichem were published. Their main purpose was to discourage Polish people from converting to Evangelism. Cromerus wrote about it in latin prafaetio for two first editions of Colloquiorum de religione from 1559 year and completed edition titled Monachus, sive Colloquiorum de religione libri quattuor... from 1568 year. In preface he mentioned reasons of creating latin versions of the dialogs, and in edition for year 1568 about his work method with text. Both authors declarations, comparison of polish and latin texts and between latin editons show that Monachus, sive Colloquiorum de religione libri quattuor is not a translation of Polish dialog. Individual editions of colloquiorum libri... contain differences in content as well as in style. Stylistical devices used by Cromerus in the fragment of first dialog from first volume Monachus… is the subject of this article. The author described riots and religious conflicts (mostly war with Smalcaldica confoederatio) imitating style of Ciceros speeches. Analysis of chosen sentences from above mentioned fragment provides evidence that Kromer has purposely used rhetorical devices and their connections form Ciceronian speeches (eg. De imperio Cn. Pompei, Pro Caelio). Analysed passaged seems to be the most rhetorical passus in over 1000 pages of Cromerus’ work, is a great ilustration of Warmian Bishops rhetorical abilities and therefore it deserves sixteenth century polish-latin prose researchers’ attention.
