    Opis:
    At the turn of the twentieth century, the debate between supporters of internal and external relations showed how our assumptions on the nature of relations result in ontological, epistemic, and ethical commitments. In this debate, Alfred North Whitehead provided the most articulated and satisfying account through his “philosophy of the organism,” which holds relations to be internal yet vectorial, without excluding completely external relations. Today, the debate has become once again topical and constitutes a core issue for speculative realism. This paper aims to show how the theory of external relations endorsed by some leading figures of speculative realism (Meillassoux, Harman, Bryant) does not suffice to preserve the desiderata it was designed for, and how a more serious consideration of Whitehead’s theory would have beneficial effects on the ontological and ethical issues of this rejuvenated metaphysical discourse.

    The article is a critical reflection on the problem of agency of objects, which is analyzed on the basis of chair renewal in the perspective of Graham Harman’s Object-Oriented Ontology. In the course of the analysis it appears that the theory of the American philosopher is insufficient to grasp the problem of objects activity, therefore the article proposes an authorial posthuman category - the concept of performative capital - intended to answer the question of how objects work and, simultaneously, how they exist.

    Artykuł przedstawia propozycję alternatywnych założeń dla badań narratologicznych. Klasyczna narratologia została oparta na paradygmacie mentalistycznym, co oznaczało zamknięcie badań narracji w języku, tekście lub dyskursie, a także prowadziło do zlekceważenia roli różnych mediów czy pośredników w opowiadaniu. W artykule zaproponowano interpretację owych mediów bądź pośredników jako osobnej rzeczywistości, która odgrywa ważną w rolę w procesie budowy opowiadania. Nawiązanie do współczesnych badań nad poznaniem, szczególnie do enaktywizmu, a także do spekulatywnego realizmu i teorii aktora-sieci pozwoliły rozwinąć nową teorię opowiadania uwzględniającą istotną rolę obiektów, które współkształtują narrację. Jako przykład literackiego wykorzystania tej teorii przywołana została propozycja interpretacji Ulicy Krokodyli Brunona Schulza.
    In this article, I formulate new premises for narrative studies. Classical narratology was based on a mentalist paradigm. It reduced the study of narrative to the study of language, text or discourse, downplaying the role of media or intermediaries in the story. I propose to define media and intermediaries in terms of a separate reality that plays an important role in the process of constructing the story. I combine cognitive science, especially enactivism, speculative realism and the actor-network theory to build a foundation for a new theory of narratology. New narratology should take into account the narrative role which objects play in the narrative. I exemplify how this theory can be used in practice in my analysis of Bruno Schulz’s Street of Crocodiles.

    This article presents the shift in the ontological status and function of Ancient Greek and Roman cultural heritage undergone by Western civilization in the last decades of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Antique tradition has since ceased to be transmitted simply as a system of ideas, values or role models, which was successively actualized in the process of its reception. In the post-modern consciousness, Ancient Greek and Roman heritage began to be understood as an individual collection of objects, consumed by society and adapted for the implementation of specific aims and aspirations. This shift consequentially results in the obsolescence of the investigative methodologies used in the study of the reception of antiquity, which have been adapted so far, and thus challenges us to search for more adequate ways of description and analysis of this cultural phenomenon. In light of this, the article presents a new understanding of the reception process and postulates a new research method, referring to the categories of speculative realism, theory of metadesign and the concept of Actor Network Theory (ANT).

    The article reviews the book by Andrzej Marzec, entitled Antropocień. Filozofia i estetyka po końcu świata. It identifies the key subject areas discussed in his work (new materialism and object‑oriented ontology), as well as the adopted method. Due to the significant role of language in the philosopher’s terminological proposition, apart from analyzing the content of the book, the article also examines the publication as an attempt to question and liberate our human selves from the possibility of the dominant, anthropocentric language.

    Artykuł omawia problematykę opisu w twórczości Zygmunta Haupta z wykorzystaniem inspiracji płynących ze strony współczesnego „zwrotu deskryptywnego” w literaturoznawstwie. Przypomniane zostały wczesne diagnozy krytyki literackiej wskazującej na wyjątkową wartość opisów Haupta, które pisarz włączał do swych opowiadań, mimo iż zdawał sobie sprawę z kryzysu zdolności mimetycznych literatury. Świadomie podejmował przy tym wysiłek „usprawiedliwiania opisu”, który pojawiał się u niego, jak zauważył Jerzy Stempowski, albo jako część całościowej wizji świata zewnętrznego z przywoływanymi próbnie uzasadnieniami filozoficznymi, albo jako element zdarzających się bohaterom opowiadań Haupta chwilom styku z realnością dostępną w znalezionych przypadkiem ramach lub „prześwitach”. Artykuł omawia kolejno te dwie metody uzasadniania części deskryptywnych, wykorzystane zostały przy tym pojęcia realizmu spekulatywnego, a także filozofii Kazimierza Twardowskiego, z której korzystają rzecznicy nowych form realizmu we współczesnej filozofii.
    This article discusses the problem of description in the works of Zygmunt Haupt in the wider context of the contemporary “descriptive turn” in literary studies. First, early critical readings and reviews of Haupt’s exceptional descriptions, which the writer included in his stories even though he acknowledged a crisis of mimesis in literature, are discussed. Indeed, Haupt made a conscious effort to “justify description,” which played an important role in his works, as Jerzy Stempowski noticed, either as part of a comprehensive vision of the outside world with tentatively invokes philosophical justifications or in moments during which Haupt’s characters come into contact with reality in and through accidental openings or “windows.” The article discusses these two respective methods of justifying description, drawing on speculative realism as well as the philosophy of Kazimierz Twardowski, which inspires the contemporary advocates of new philosophical realisms.

    Autor przygląda się świeżemu zjawisku, jakim jest zwrot ku rzeczom w kinie współczesnym. Interpretując filmy Quentina Dupieux oraz Petera Stricklanda, skupia się przede wszystkim na kluczowej w dotarciu do rzeczy samych w sobie kategorii powabu (allure) oraz odróżnia ją od zmysłowego uwodzenia, z którym najczęściej jest mylona. Następnie, odwołując się do teorii witalistycznego materializmu Jane Bennett oraz jej pojęcia siły rzeczy (thing-power), zastanawia się, na czym polega sprawczość przedmiotów i dlaczego tak trudno nam ją sobie wyobrazić. Obecny u Bennett pasywno-aktywny charakter sprawczości rzeczy prezentuje na przykładzie najnowszego filmu Jamesa Benninga Maggie’s Farm (2019). Autor udowadnia, że estetyka oraz retoryka w kinie zorientowanym ku przedmiotom nie są powierzchownymi ozdobnikami, nie pełnią roli ornamentu, lecz pozwalają poszczególnym twórcom filmowym w inny sposób spojrzeć na przedmioty.
    The author investigates the recent phenomenon of object-oriented cinema. Interpreting the films of Quentin Dupieux and Peter Strickland, he focuses primarily on the key category of speculative realism that is allure, and distinguishes it from sensual seduction, which is most often confused with. Then, referring to the Jane Bennett theory of vitalist materialism and her concept of thing-power, he asks about the agency of objects and why it is so difficult for us to imagine it. He presents the passive-active nature of agency of Bennett on the example of the latest film by James Benning, Maggie’s Farm (2019). The author proves that aesthetics and rhetoric in object-oriented cinema are not superficial ornaments, but on the contrary allow individual filmmakers to look at objects in a different way.

    Artykuł stawia sobie za cel wykazanie, że we współczesnej literaturze anglojęzycznej wyodrębnić można tradycję, którą cechuje specyficzne przywiązanie do rzeczy, w wielu aspektach zbieżne z dociekaniami prowadzonymi przez przedstawicieli filozofii zwróconej ku przedmiotom (object-oriented philosophy). Pewne aspekty twórczości omawianych poetów – Gerarda Manleya Hopkinsa, Seamusa Heaneya i Jorie Graham – można interpretować jako zwrot ku rzeczom, głównie ze względu na przywiązanie tych autorów do konkretu i szczegółu, co nie powstrzymuje ich jednak przed rozwijaniem swoich zainteresowań w pełnoprawną spekulację metafizyczną. W tym wymiarze, postantropocentryczna filozofia spod znaku realizmu spekulatywnego, a zwłaszcza myśl Grahama Harmana, dostarcza narzędzi konceptualnych pozwalających ująć zagadnienie „istności rzeczy” w perspektywie nowoczesnej, radykalnie zdemokratyzowanej ontologii posthumanistycznej. Krytyka automatyzmów językowych i poznawczych nie jest tu jednak ujęta w kategoriach „śmierci podmiotu”, ale raczej otwiera pole do rozważań nad istotnym miejscem estetyki, a zwłaszcza funkcji metafory
    This paper aims to show that within contemporary English-language poetry it is possible to discern a tradition characterized by a specific attachment to things, which in many ways runs parallel to the investigations of philosophers representing object-oriented philosophy. Certain aspects of poems by authors discussed here – Gerard Manley Hopkins, Seamus Heaney and Jorie Graham – can be interpreted as a turn towards objects, mainly due to the devotion of these poets to particulars and details, which nevertheless does not hinder their further explorations of objects and things, often leading to full-blown metaphysical speculation. In this sense, the post-anthropocentric philosophy of speculative realism, especially the thought of Graham Harman, supplies conceptual tools allowing to grasp the “thingness” from the perspective of a modern, democratic post-human ontology. However, such criticism of automatism in language and cognition is not reduced here to the “death of the subject,” but rather serves as means of further opening the field for consideration, especially regarding the important function of aesthetics and the role of a metaphor.

    The major importance attributed by Heidegger to the ontological status of the tool has allowed a series of challenging insights into its role and significance in Being and Time, leading to a questioning upon the very existence of an autonomous phenomenology of technology in it. In what follows, we chose to thematize two of the most recent attempts to evaluate the status of technique in the 1927 Grundwerk. Graham Harman’s approach is situated within the broader context of a recent trend in continental philosophy designated as speculative realism, whereas Peter-Paul Verbeek’s is largely inspired by Don Ihde’s postphenomenological account of technology. The extreme diversification of these two hermeneutic projects renders their treatment on a common ground quite difficult. Nevertheless, we argue that both of them share several common points, despite their fundamental and unbridgeable gap. Harman’s and Verbeek’s efforts to refine the hermeneutic access to one of the most influential sections of Heidegger’s major work exemplify a vivid interest in Being and Time itself, but also in the contemporary phenomenology of technology in general.

    The subject is an attempt to describe the evolution of the term „nihilism” in philosophy (hermeneutics) at the turn of centuries and the description of how this evolution influenced the ways of analyzing literary phenomena. The author wants to present judgements which revalue the approach to this way of thinking deeply rooted in culture. Nihilism in presented approaches appears to be a world view and esthetic phenomenon opening new field of interpretation of poetic and prose texts. The exemplary literary material displaying the possibilities of different interpretations of an artistic text, both an essay and a poem is the output of Jarosław Marek Rymkiewicz.
