Opis:
The paper presents the research on the increasing in the floristic diversity of abandoned Arrhenatherion elatioris meadows through the introduction of three dicotyledonous species: Achillea millefolium, Daucus carota and Leucanthemum vulgare and the re-management. They were carried out in the meadows of the landscape reserve “The Ursynów Escarpment” (“Skarpa Ursynowska”) in 2016-2018. The studies were aimed at restoring natural values of these meadows, especially their landscape and aesthetic functions. The experiment was designed in the community of Arrhenatherum elatius + Bromus inermis, as a randomised complete block, with eight replications, on the plots of 2 m2. In each plot the diaspores (collected in The Lower Pilica Valley) were sown close to the centre of the plot, within an area of 0.5×0.5 m. In the sowing year two top-cuttings and one productive one were made. In the following years the meadows were mowed once or twice. The following features were estimated: the abundance of sown species populations, the seedling density, the heights of the sown species, the height of the resident vegetation, the total ground cover, the species composition of the sward and the species richness. The improvement of the landscape and aesthetic functions of the reserve due to increasing in the species richness from 10 to 38 species and significant decreasing in Urtica dioica share was achieved. The species diversity, described with the Shannon-Wiener index, enlarged of 53% in the first year after oversowing. The introduced species decided also about the improvement of the total ground cover. Fast and lasting effect was obtained especially on the area over-sown with L. vulgare. The good effects in the first two years were obtained also in the plots with D. carota (biennial species). A. millefolium was characterised by significantly fewer number of seedlings but its population abundance was increasing gradually during the following years. The impact of high grasses (A. elatius, B. inermis) on the soil coverage by the plants of sown species and their heights was shown. The studies also proved that in the conditions of summer drought the resident vegetation may protect the seedlings against the temperature and evapotranspiration.

Opis:
Freshwater snails Melanoides tuberculata are among the most commonly kept aquarium molluscs. Their ability to rapidly grow population and a relatively low cost contribute to uncontrolled introductions in new areas by irresponsible owners. The species has been recorded so far in several countries of Western Europe, as well as in Poland, where it was able to settle a stable population in the thermally polluted system of Koninskie Lakes. The paper describes a new statement of this species in the Żerań Canal in Warsaw, Central Poland, where environmental molluscs of the Corbicula genus have also been noted. Four adult snails with black color of spirally twisted shells have been caught. No epibionts were observed on the snails, which could get into the environment with the molluscs. Due to large fluctuations in the temperature of the water in the Canal and its direct connection with the Vistula, it is recommended to cover the site with regular monitoring to determine the potential threat posed by the presence of the Melanoides tuberculata species.

protected plant species
Opis:
Przeniesienie poprzedzono analizami glebowymi (wilgotność, odczyn) i klimatycznymi siedliska macierzystego. Wykonano także pomiary biometryczne, tj. zmierzono wysokość osobników, długość kwiatostanu, policzono liczbę liści, określono zagęszczenie. Stwierdzono występowanie 207 osobników, z czego 109 to osobniki kwitnące, a 98 niekwitnące. Po przeprowadzeniu badań przeniesiono populację kukułki szerokolistnej na 6 wytypowanych stanowisk. Introdukcję przeprowadzono trzema różnymi metodami: wykopywano storczyki w monolitach, wprowadzając je w nowy biotop, wykopywano pojedyncze bulwy i wprowadzano w nowe siedlisko, ochrona ex situ z późniejszą próbą wprowadzenia w siedlisko naturalne. Rok po introdukcji Dactylorhiza majalis obserwuje się liczne wschody storczyków na wszystkich sześciu powierzchniach.
In Poland, the Marsh Orchid (Dactylorhiza majalis) is the most common species of the orchid family. For years in the Landscape Park Gory Opawskie, namely in the area of the Shale Extraction and Grinding Factory in Jarnoltowek, there has been a location of the Marsh Orchid, which has never been described. At the beginning of 2006, the factory mentioned plans of extension of the exploitation area, which would cause a complete destruction of this location, and thus - specimens of protected plant species. This caused an urgent need to move the endangered population to a different location. Displacement was preceded by analysis of soil (humidity, reaction) and climate condition of the native habitat. Biometric measurements were taken - the height of specimens and length of inflorescences were measures, leaves were counted, and the density was described. Occurrence of 207 individuals was found, including 109 flowering and 98 - not flowering specimens. After this survey, the population of the Marsh Orchid was moved to 6 selected locations. This introduction was conducted by three different methods: orchids were dug out in monoliths, which were then introduced in a new habitat, single bulbs were dug out and introduced in a new habitat, protection ex situ followed by the later attempt of introduction in a natural habitat. Almost a year after the introduction of Dactylorhiza majalis numerous sprouting of orchids are observed at all six plots.

ornamental tropical fish
Opis:
Ornamental tropical fish are kept in home aquaria for many decades. It is often that fish that grown too big or are unwanted by the owner are released into natural environment. Most tropical fish have zero chance for survival in polish natural water bodies not only through the winter, but in many cases even through summer months. There are several reports of non-native fauna species in our waters. Successful introductions took places in few artificial canals with thermally polluted waters namely pumpkinseed Lepomis gibbosus (Linnaeus, 1758) in warm canal of Odra river, dramatically changing local ecosystems. Object of this paper is Silver arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) caught in hand aquarium net in Powsinkowskie Lake. The lake is one of the most important water reservoir in most urbanized part of Poland – its capital Warsaw. Because of its location in highly urbanized area it is the reservoir of intense uncontrolled introduction of unwanted fish. Most tropical alien species may not be able to survive in our local waters but may cause severe local ecosystem imbalances for example they may possibly be hosts to pathogenic organism that our fish have no immune system tuned to. Therefore places like Powsinkowskie Lake is a good place for scientist to perform periodic inventory to determine the species composition, fish numbers and condition.

Opis:
Mid-field shelterbelts play a key role in shaping the agricultural landscape, and also reduce the negative impact of climate change on the environment. The aim of created new tree stands is, among others, agri-environmental programs. Establishing field trees is a difficult task that requires a lot of knowledge and experience. When designing the species composition of trees, one should avoid invasive alien species. The aim of this article is to explain the reasons why invasive species should not be used in planting and afforestation, using the example of the black cherry. The black cherry is competitive in relation to native species of trees and shrubs, but also to herbaceous plants. Due to the high and annual capacity for abundant fruiting of the black cherry and its functional features (e.g. honey yield), it is still widely produced as ornamental and planting material in commercial nurseries. We do not recommend this species for planting in wooded and afforested areas. Where possible, we suggest introducing native black cherry or other native species of trees and shrubs that can successfully replace an unwanted stranger from overseas.

Natural range of the Yellow Azalea Rhododendron luteum Sweet (Azalea pontica L.) includes the Caucasus, Asia Minor, Volhynia and SE rim of the Alps (Slovenia). There is also a natural locality of this species in Poland, in Wola Zarczycka near Leżajsk. The plant was discovered in 1795 in Volhynian Polesia by an eminent gardener Dionizy Mikler, and its popularity grew thanks to the Botanic Garden affiliated by the Krzemieniec College. Already at the first half of the 19th century Yellow Rhododendron, originating from Volhynian Polesia, was in cultivation in most of European Botanic Gardens. Nowadays this species can be easily found even in small private gardens. It has also been planted in forests. In Volhynian Polesia it grows abundantly in continental mesotrophic oak-pine mixed forests (Querco roboris-Pinetum), sometimes covering 100% of the shrub layer. Its is equally common in continental swamp pine forests (Vaccinio uliginosi-Pinetum). The soils where the species grow are always moist and very acidic (pH below 4). In Volhynia plant communities with R. luteum cover over 1.5 billion ha. In Ukraine the plant is not protected by law.

Opis:
The study objects were Aldrovanda vesiculosa L., an endangered species and fifty five water sites in Poland. The aim of the present work was to test the Self-Organizing Feature Map in order to examine and predict water properties and type of trophicity for restoration of the rare plant. Descriptive statistical parameters have been calculated, analysis of variance and cluster analysis were carried out and SOFM model has been constructed for analysed sites. The results of SOFM model and cluster analysis were compared. The study revealed that the ordination of individuals and groups of neurons in topological map of sites are similar in relation to dendrogram of cluster analysis, but not identical. The constructed SOFM model is related with significantly different contents of chemical water properties and type of trophicity. It appeared that sites with A. vesiculosa are predominantly distrophic and eutrophic waters shifted to distrophicity. The elevated model showed the sites with chemical properties favourable for restoration the species. Determined was the range of ecological tolerance of the species in relation to habitat conditions as stenotopic or relatively stenotopic in respect of the earlier accepted eutrophic status. The SOFM appeared to be a useful technique for ordination of ecological data and provides a novel framework for the discovery and forecasting of ecosystem properties constituting a validation of the SOFM method in this type of studies.
