Opis:
This paper attempts to assess an effect of the range of regulatory works in watercourse beds on the aquatic plant communities. The results of field studies carried out on sections transformed as a result of regulatory works and the non-altered sections were compared for this purpose. The field studies were conducted in growing seasons in years 2008-2014 on 11 small and medium-sized lowland watercourses in Lower Silesia. They included identification of aquatic plant species and estimation of the degree of bottom coverage with them. The assessment was based on analysis of changes in the values of five biological indicators such as: the number of aquatic plant species, Jaccard similarity coefficient, ecological status, Shannon-Wiener biodiversity index and Pielou`s evenness index. Comparative analyzes enabled to determine the qualitative and quantitative changes in the aquatic plant communities. However, they did not show any correlation between the analyzed biological indicators and the range of regulatory works in watercourse beds.

Opis:
Using standard methods, we describe three new microthoracids. Drepanomonas minuta nov. spec. is characterized by a small size (in vivo about 22 × 11 µm) and a curious distribution pattern of the extrusomes, viz., only one trichocyst each in mid of dorsal margin and near posterior end of ventral side. Body size and shape of D. minuta highly resemble D. revoluta – for which a new morphometric characterization is provided – which, however, has a deep, broad furrow on the left side and more than 10 extrusomes. Drepanomonas multidentata nov. spec. was discovered in ephemeral grassland puddles on the north coast of Venezuela. It is a comparatively large species (in vivo 45 × 25 µm) with a total of nine spines, of which those on the left posterior half form a highly characteristic tridentate pattern. Curiously, this species lacks extrusomes. Leptopharynx lajacola nov. spec. was discovered in an ephemeral puddle on a granitic outcropping (Laja) in Venezuela. This species resembles L. costatus but is unique in having a quadrangular outline and a strongly curved oral basket with the opening directed posteriorly. In the past four years, we have described 10 new microthoracids, showing that their diversity is far from being exhausted.

The aims of this study are to model past (LIG, LGM and Mid-Holocene), present and future (2050 and 2070) distributions of the Quercus vulcanica Boiss. & Heldr. ex Kotschy by using Maximum Entropy, and to predict suitable areas for the conservation of the species for future planning. MaxEnt distribution modeling was used to model distributions. Results for past bioclimatic conditions show that the distribution area of the species expanded and then contracted (LIG to LGM and LGM to HOL). The modelling shows that the distribution range of the species will be narrower in the future. The species will be facing extinction towards 2070. Therefore, the conservation status of the species should be evaluated according to the present findings. Although the largest population of the Q. vulcanica is found in Isparta and Afyonkarahisar Provinces located in Southwestern Turkey, this area will not be suitable for the growth and survival of the species in the future. For this reason, a new nature reserve area should be established in a more suitable climate.

Opis:
River valleys are areas of transition between aquatic and terrestrial communities, with complex biological structure. As ecotones they have high biodiversity as a result of the occurrence of species with different requirements according to soil moisture. They create ecological corridors, allowing migration of the organisms in human disturbed landscape. With these migration routes, species of foreign origin which spread to a new area also benefit. Numerous alien species are considered as invasive, and described as a threat to biodiversity due to strong competitive abilities. To describe the relationships between a number of invasive species, biodiversity and size of a river, the vegetation of 750 m fragments of the Odra and Dobra river valleys on the area of the Wrocław city were analysed. The comparison of plant communities in the valley of a large, managed river (Odra) and its small tributary (Dobra) was carried out. The plant assemblages, occurring in study areas, determined the habitat conditions on the basis of Ellenberg’s indicator values (EIV’s), as well as Shannon-Wiener biodiversity index was defined. The designed sites differed according to Shannon-Wiener biodiversity index, as well as soil properties: moisture, reaction, and fertility. In the study side of the Odra river ruderal and scrub species were dominated, whereas in case of study site of the Dobra river – meadows and ruderal species. The invasive plant species occurring in the Odra valley are: Symphoricarpos albus, Solidago gigantea, S. canadensis, Robinia pseudoacacia, Clematis vitalba, Quercus rubra, Reynoutria japonica, Parthenocissus inserta and Echinocystis lobata, and in the Dobra valley: Solidago gigantea, S. canadensis. The analysis of correlation between Shannon-Wiener biodiversity index and share of invasive species revealed statistically significant influence of occurrence of invasive species on biodiversity of plant communities in case of the Odra river.

Green walls, along with green roofs, parks, and vertical gardens, belong to the green infrastructure of cities, which will encompass the majority of humanity in the coming decades. Green infrastructure benefits both urban residents and nature in the urban landscape, although there is no scientific consensus on the extent to which green walls, especially green facades, impact biodiversity in cities. This study examined the influence of green facades on the richness of mammals, birds, and invertebrates, considering the species and age of the plants comprising the green facade in a medium-sized city located in southwestern Poland. It was found that the implementation of green facades significantly enhances species’ biodiversity compared to non-vegetated walls. Four synanthropic bird species were nesting on green facades: Eurasian collared dove (Streptopelia decaocto), blackbird (Turdus merula), house sparrow (Passer domesticus) and woodpigeon (Columba palumbus). For the beech marten (Martes foina), the green facades are a hunting ground for birds and their eggs. This simple and effective method of creating green walls provides benefits to local wildlife by creating habitats, shelter, and foraging opportunities for selected species. However, it is difficult to determine whether green facades contribute to the formation of ecological corridors in urban environments. The study also examined the social aspect related to the establishment and maintenance of green facades on the surveyed buildings.

Opis:
Expansion of invasive species can be clearly seen all over Poland. Foreign tree and herbaceous plant species are effectively taking over more and more habitats competing with native vegetation. This phenomenon is strongly pronounced in the areas subject to strong anthropogenic pressure. The presence of invasive plants replacing the native vegetation is a threat for biodiversity and ecological balance. The research carried out by the authors between 2011 and 2017 on selected sites (comparatively: urban and open spaces, including a 600 ha park and a 10 km long forest strip along a river) confirms the pressure exerted by invasive species irrespective of the natural conditions of a particular site or its type – in each case it is most prominent in areas where vegetation is not properly maintained or where it is not maintained at all. The research was based on the dendrological inventories and phytosociological assessments. The inventories were used for a detailed assessment of both the condition and structure of treestands, including accounting for invasive species. Phytosociological assessment can, among others, form a basis for forecasting ecological stability of individual plant communities. Uncontrolled expansion of invasive species, especially in the areas of strong anthropogenic pressure, may cause unfavourable natural succession and in consequence – destabilisation of ecological system in a given area.

The study was conducted within the Bydgoszcz limits and in the vicinity of city Bydgoszcz at seven different habitats of Hierochloë repens presence: city district Fordon - (1), (2), (3) and (4); city district Kapuściska - (5), and Białe Błota near Bydgoszcz - (6) and (7). Samples for acarological analyses were collected from the plots covered with Hierochloë repens in spring (27 May) and autumn (28 October) 2014. The density of oribatid mites on the sites with Hierochloë repens was highly variable. High density of these microarthropods was characteristic of plots (2) with Convolvulo-Brometum inermis, (5) with Arrhenatheretum elatioris and (7) covered with grassy herbaceous plants growing on fertile soils. Particularly low density of oribatid mites was observed for plot (3) with Koelerio-Corynephoretea and Festuco-Brometea communities and the lowest content of carbon and nitrogen in the soil. Depending on the site and sample collection time, four to 22 species of oribatid mites were identified. Statistical analysis (Mann-Whitney U test) of mean number of species per sample s identified two groups of plots for both sample collection terms characterized by either low (1.00-3.10) or high values (3.30-7.40) of this parameter. The first group included plots (1), (3) and (6), and the second (2), (4), (5) and (7). The following species of oribatid mites dominated on the plots covered with Hierochloë repens: Tectocepheus velatus - (1), (2) and (6); Scheloribates laevigatus - (3), Oppiella nova - (4), Eupelops occultus - (5), Liebstadia similis - (7).

A checklist of 81 taxa has been prepared on the basis of 750 exsiccates of slime moulds collected in the years 1958-2009 in the area of Central Poland and preserved in the Herbarium LOD F. All these materials were reexamined according to contemporary literature. The paper summarizes the existing data concerning the occurrence of slime moulds in this area. Among the identified taxa there are four species indicated in the red list in Poland: Badhamia affinis, Physarum robustum, Didymium leptotrichum, and Clastoderma debaryanum.
Kolekcja śluzowców z lat 1958-2009 z terenu Polski Środkowej przechowywana w Herbarium Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego (LOD F) była przedmiotem weryfikacji taksonomicznej z uwzględnieniem danych ekologicznych i chorologicznych. Zbiory gromadzone były z różną intensywnością, najczęściej w czasie badań mykologicznych prowadzonych na terenach leśnych, głównie w rezerwatach przyrody chroniących stanowiska jodły, buka i świerka na granicy występowania tych drzew w Polsce. Na podstawie analizy 750 eksykatów zidentyfikowano 81 taksonów śluzowców. Materiał pochodził z 34 stanowisk reprezentujących szerokie zróżnicowanie siedliska od rezerwatów przyrody do skrajnie zmienionych terenów w warunkach miejskich i podmiejskich Łodzi.

Large tracts of natural habitat are being readily replaced by urban sprawl worldwide. We have limited knowledge about the anthropogenic activities on native species in these ecological regions. Human intervention has led to conversion of much of the global diversity by means of habitat alterations. Our conservation methods are also suffering from those superficial strategies. The present study was carried out to investigate the importance of habitat heterogeneity for the diversity, distribution and abundance of avifauna in and around Pench Tiger Reserve. In February 2014, a total of 79 bird species were recorded during the study period, applying the modified point count method. We compared species abundance and richness in Pench Tiger Reserve, considering four zones as metacommunity. Avifaunal community was distributed among Kolitmara (Western Pench, Maharashtra), Sillari (Maharashtra), Mansinghdeo (Maharashtra) and Seoni, Pench (Madhya Pradesh). Site specific biodiversity indices reflect the occurrence pattern of avifauna. Shannon – Wiener and Species diversity Index scored highest (9.56 and 1.78 respectively) in Mansinghdeo Wildlife Sanctuary. But species dominance was found high (0.62) in and around Sillari. Study areas with dense canopy closure were found to have more habitat specialist bird species, while areas having human settlements showed more opportunistic ones. An overall negative impact of human settlements on avian diversity, distribution and abundance was evidenced from the present study but more intensive study is needed to infer on the dynamics. Moreover, intensive studies may enrich us about avian diversity and distribution pattern of the study zone.

The investigations were carried out in 2002-2006 in two municipalities of Konopnica and Jastków close to the western part of Lublin, Poland. The aim of the study was to identify the condition of bee flora and determine the floristic richness depending on the biotops in agricultural landscape. Flora of the anthropogenic refuge areas consists of 214 species, among them 80% were flow taxons. Apophytes (162 species - 78%) predominated on all types of biotops under consideration. Perennials predominated in flora of boundary strips and bush communities. Mainly annual (40%) and biennial (15%) species comprise the flora of fallows. A great number of bee taxons represent meadow, segetal or ruderal communities. Most of flow plants compose loose patches, but their successive blooming ensures a source of food for Apoidea from early spring till the end of summer. The flora of boundary strips, bush communities and fallows significantly increases the biodiversity in agricultural landscape. The treatments including sowing, mainly on fallows with nectariferous and polleniferous species, would enrich generally weak flows in highly agricultural landscape.
W analizowanej florze przeważały apofity - 78% nad gatunkami obcymi (kenofitami). We florze miedz i zadrzewień śródpolnych przewagę stanowiły gatunki wieloletnie. Taksony krótkotrwałe (40% - jednoroczne i 15% dwuletnie) dominowały na gruntach odłogowanych. Zdecydowana większość gatunków pożytkowych reprezentuje zbiorowiska łąkowe, segetalne i ruderalne.

Attempts to study biodiversity hotspots on a regional scale should combine compositional and functionalist criteria. The detection of hotspots in this study uses one ecologically similar group of high conservation value species as hotspot indicators, as well as focal habitat indicators, to detect the distribution of suitable environmental conditions. The method is assessed with reference to thermophilous forests in Poland – key habitats for many rare and relict species. Twenty-six high conservation priority species were used as hotspot indicators, and ten plant taxa characteristic of the Quercetalia pubescenti-petraeae phytosociological order were used as focal habitat indicators. Species distribution data was based on a 10 × 10 km grid. The number of species per grid square was interpolated by the ordinary kriging geostatistical method. Our analysis largely determined the distribution of areas with concentration of thermophilous forest flora, but also regional disjunctions and geographical barriers. Indicator species richness can be interpreted as a reflection of the actual state of habitat conditions. It can also be used to determine the location of potential species refugia and possible past and future migration routes.

Opis:
In the mountains of the north-central Sicily (Italy), a small and isolated population of Sicilian fir (Abies nebrodensis) has survived to the present day. It is the most unique species of the Sicilian flora, not only because of its taxonomic position, but mostly because of its endemic and relict status and the serious risk of extinction. The single natural population of this extremely rare species is currently represented by only 30 mature individuals scattered over a small area in the Madonie Mountains. This species has experienced intensive population decline since the end of the 17th century, and its situation became extremely critical in the first decades of the 19th century due to deforestation and overgrazing. Consequently, Sicilian fir was considered to be extinct about three decades before being rediscovered on the Madonie Mts. in 1937. Sicilian fir is recognized as one of the most endangered coniferous species in the world. It is classified as critically endangered by IUCN, and also included in the list of 50 most endangered plant species in the Mediterranean region. Currently, the limited population size, a small proportion of reproductive individuals, habitat loss, ongoing and projected climate change, and hybridization with other species pose serious threats to survival of this species. Therefore, it is extremely important to maintain actions focusing on in situ and ex situ conservation in order to preserve and protect the existing resources of Sicilian fir, which represents the natural heritage unique to the Mediterranean.

The article presents the concept and modes of measurement of biological diversity as well as its significance as an indicator of sustainable development and ecodevelopment. Estimation of biodiversity can be carried out on various levels of organisation of nature. The majority of currently used indicators are linked to species and ecosystem (landscape) diversity. It has been established that indicators concerning the state of the natural environment are of great importance for evaluation of fulfilment of the assumptions of sustainable development, for which the important goal should be the restriction of the rate of species extinction on Earth.

In order to mitigate negative effects of climate change in protected areas it is necessary to create and apply management programs, based on future ecosystems needs. The main aim of presented study was to evaluate sensitivity of rare and vulnerable species to climate change in order to suggest measures for better management of nature reserves in the future. According to scientific literature, 12 biological and ecological plant characteristics determining sensitivity of species (limiting factors) have been detected. 73 plant species that are protected in Lithuanian reserves were evaluated qualitatively according to limiting factors of climate change. As the result, it was offered to apply additional protection measures to 47 species in the light of climate change. Groups of plant species that should be affected highly negatively or highly positively were identified. 16% of plant species protected in nature reserves were evaluated as very sensitive to climate change and the condition of these plants may worsen. On the other hand, 14 plant species were given as least sensitive to negative effects and future climate is more favorable to species growth and spread than the existing. The highest danger is predicted for Silene chlorantha (Willd.) Ehrh., and the best condition is predicted for Mentha longifolia (L.) Huds. Dactylorhiza incarnata (L.) Soó. The study also gives recommendations for the protection of rare plants in the future. Different management measures are taken into account: mitigation of the direct effect of climate change (I), improvement of an existing level of rareness (II), respecting the relation to physical and biological environment (III), consideration of spread and geographical limits (IV). Three management intensity levels were suggested according to species sensitivity.
