Opis:
The article concentrates on the lexical and terminological features of the language of motorization. The analysis is based on the catalogues published by one of the leading passenger car producers in Germany and employs the perspective of specialist translation from German into Polish. The problems discussed in the article include loanwords, specialist jargon and the issues of synonymia and polysemy. The texts selected for the analysis and their specific linguistic and cultural features may serve as an interesting teaching material for specialist translation courses in philological translation studies.

The present paper deals with languages for special purposes with special attention paid to teaching problems. It could be shown that there is a difference between special languages on the one hand and specialist languages on the other hand, that only the latter deserve to be named “languages”, whereas the former contain elements which do not constitute a language of its own, i.e. a language within a language, but have to be considered as being part of the common language. The author points out that a new teaching strategy that takes into account the fact that special words do not automatically belong to a special language may well be warranted.

Opis:
Learning a specialist language entails developing a number of linguistic competencies, the most important of which is discursive competence enabling proper communication in a particular professional environment. Its development requires that the learner should become sensitive to the pragmatic aspects of specialist language use in a wider discursive context, with particular attention to genre norms forming a discursive polisystem of a given culture. This paper presents specialist text translation as one of the most effective ways of teaching a specialist language by improving discursive competence.

The article analyses the sources of phraseological units occurring in the media and in journalistic texts of contemporary Polish language. The first part of the article contains a few remarks on two types of new noun phrases, e.g. Europa dwu prędkości (two-/multi-speed Europe), mowa nienawiści (hate speech), dane wrażliwe (sensitive data). The second part indicates the main problems related to the linguistic description of phraseology in journalism: the phraseologism – term relation and the difficulties in identifying the sources of phraseological units (the type of loanword).

Specialist languages should be straightforward and unambiguous. In areas such as law, business or medicine precision and to-the-point wording is required. However, in order to facilitate the description of complicated matters, and especially in expert to non-expert communication, unexpected strategies, e.g. metaphorisation, are used. Conceptual metaphor theory, as initially introduced by Lakoff and Johnson (cf. Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) states that human beings tend to think in metaphors, i.e. we are engaged in constant search of similarities between concepts. This drive for pattern recognition helps us understand the unknown in terms of the familiar, the abstract in terms of the concrete. Most conceptual metaphors are grounded in our physical experience of the world, which means that we draw from this familiar experience while creating metaphorical mappings to the complex, abstract concepts. Controversial as it may seem, the same process applies to understanding professional terms and scientific notions, and as a result the language of law, business, medicine, etc. is heavily metaphorical in nature. In our presentation we focus on medicine alone and analyse a corpus of medical text in search of conceptual metaphors. We claim, that rather than obscuring the message, metaphors actually make it clearer and more precise. They enrich conceptualisation, structure the semantics of the message and serve a number of pragmatic functions, esp. in doctor to patient communication. By choosing a certain metaphor, the message may e.g. be softened in order to lessen the impact it has on the recipient. Moreover, it may be more easily understood if it is built on an adequate conceptual metaphor. Many metaphors used in the medical discourse are based on multimodal representations e.g. descriptions of diseases often invoke the imagery of food including its shape, colour, texture, and smell. Such multimodality of representation (cf. Forceville, 2009 and online) engages a number of cognitive faculties for the construction of a complex conceptualisation and in this way helps us gain better understanding of the concepts described. We claim that conceptual metaphor and esp. pictorial metaphor is a very effective tool used in didactics and its use is perfectly justified in scientific discourses, including the medical discourse. Therefore, in our presentation we analyse pictorial metaphors found in medical discourse and in the field of radiology in particular.

The present article addresses the subject of technical specialist text, its discursive features and, what follows, its potential within the complex context of communication and functionality. What shall be analysed herein is a specific genre of the text, i.e. product information, along with its distinctive properties treated as a tool for exerting influence. The analysis shall be conducted while taking into account both inter- and intra-industry specialist communication. Consideration shall be given to the intertextual sphere, the functions and conventional structure of the text, its interactive roles and formulative level, i.e. the linguistic means and structures through which the speech acts inherent in the genre and necessary in the communication process are performed.

The results of a research on segetal weed communities in fibre flax in Poland are presented, with respect to different regions of cultivation, and changes in the level of infestation during the past forty years. Observations on composition and abundance of weed infestations were made in fields in six experimental farms at the Institute of Natural Fibres and Medicinal Plants. The observations conducted in the period 1967-2008 did not show the occurrence of weed species from the group of so-called “flax specialists”: Lolium remotum Schrank, Spergula arvensis L. subsp. maxima (Weiche) O. Schwarz, Camelina alyssum (Mill.) Thell. and Cuscuta epilinum Weihe Ex Boenn. In Poland, weed populations in fibre flax consist of species typical for cereals and root crops: Chenopodium album L., Polygonum convolvulus L., Viola arvensis Murr., Stellaria media Vill., Lamium amplexicaule L., Thlaspi arvense L., Elymus repens (L.) The aim of the article is to indicate the reasons for institutional changes in the provision of specialist counseling services in Poland. The author poses a thesis that specialist counseling is too closely associated with the social assistance system and becomes synonymous with social counseling. This results in lack of universality of the service which is directed almost exclusively to beneficiaries of social security. In the meantime, specialist counseling should “overtake” the social security system and act immediately after the problem has been identified, in the early stages of a difficult situation. The article is of analyticalempirical nature. The presented position results from the quantitative and qualitative analysis of research carried out among representatives of social services, specialists, local authorities, representatives of the III sector, people managing social security systems and local communities.

This text is an attempt to apply the concept of a legal text unit to the description of strictly defined structures of legal texts, namely the gerund strings. The main attention is focused on the methods used to identify multi-segment terminological structures and on distinguishing them from strings that constitute a combination of linguistic expressions. The overall conclusion of such analysis is based on the indication of the mechanism used for connecting and limiting gerund structures in this scope. Therefore, this work includes, among others, the formal procedure of verification, which allows for distinguishing, with significant precision, the syntactic constructions with gerund forms and similar sequences of terms.

Najwyższa Izba Kontroli coraz częściej korzysta z pomocy biegłych i specjalistów. Tymczasem stosowanie poświęconych im regulacji zawartych w ustawie o NIK w praktyce sprawia trudności. Wątpliwości budzi tryb ich powoływania, ponieważ ustawa pozostawia dużą swobodę. Dotyczy ona także ustalania wynagrodzenia. Może to prowadzić do nadmiernego wzrostu cen oraz wydłużania negocjacji. Wymóg zawarcia umowy powoduje ponadto, że w istocie to biegły (specjalista) decyduje, czy podejmie się czynności. Dysfunkcjonalne są również rozwiązania o ich wyłączeniu. Wskazana byłaby więc poważna reforma przepisów.
The changes in the performance of public tasks that are subject to NIK’s audits that call for using advanced technologies, require NIK to more often use the knowledge of experts and specialists. Experts do not establish facts or status quo, but assess them through the prism of specialist information, while specialists support auditors in determining facts. However, the border between assessing facts and determining them on the basis of specialist knowledge is unclear. In practice, the application of the provisions on experts and specialists comprised in the Act of 23rd December 1994 on the Supreme Audit Office raises many doubts. They are mainly related to the mixed course of appointment, and the entities that can be entrusted with these functions. The article aims to analyse the regulations dedicated to experts and specialists in NIK audits in comparison with other procedures. The intention is to delineate suggested directions for changes. The author concludes that there is the need for a serious and thorough reform of the provisions of the Act on NIK related to experts and specialists. He emphasises that – since NIK audits mainly public authorities or administration bodies – these functions should be mostly their responsibility. It would be justified then to allow the staff of public institutions to act as experts or specialists on the basis of a decision (without concluding a contract) or, alternatively, on the basis of an agreement between NIK and the given entity. It would be also reasonable to allow legal entities and organisational units (or natural persons representing them) to act as experts during audit proceedings. In the opinion of the author, there are also arguments for establishing a mechanism to discipline experts (specialists) so that the decision on when to commence the task is not an exclusively at their discretion. The job of experts and specialists in the audit process should be of a public law nature. Amendments are also necessary for the provisions on excluding experts (specialists) from audit proceedings. The current provisions do not meet the specifics of NIK’s audits, since exclusion is possible only when the auditee applies for it. And auditees are informed neither about the appointment of experts or specialists nor about their activities. Since inquisitional elements prevail in the audit process, the need for engaging experts (specialists) ex officio is justified, since the body that appoints them usually finds out about the reasons for excluding them first.

The article is dedicated to an analysis of lexis related to the representation of the sounds of birds in a text that might be treated as an original implementation of principles of the popular science discourse. The author of the book builds an independently peculiar discourse community acting as the host a polyphonic message. Referring to his own experience base, built on his wide reading in the field of ornithology and bird watching, he describes, in the form of a report, and in the poetics of a feature article and a diary, his own fascination with the world of birds. He treats the knowledge constituting the cognitive background of the utterance as a value that he wants to share with interested readers. Describing the sounds of birds the author uses conventional lexical measures,i.e. nominal or verbal names of sounds and onomatopoeic exclamations imitating the sounds of birds. The originality of the message is gained not by morphological invention, but due to references to artistic style, colorfulness, and the suggestiveness of originally selected epithets, comparisons, and figurative expressions
