Opis:: The main focus of this paper is the degree of passivisation in English, French and Polish legal texts, considered as fully representative of specialised discourse, examined in selected original and translated texts. Since it is assumed that typological differences between languages determine users’ choices regarding their selection of passive structures, the very same tendencies should be also reflected in the specialised, legal variant of the language. The aim of this study is to verify this assumption by juxtaposing the research findings from two specialised corpora, namely a comparable corpus and a parallel corpus, both created by the author following corpus linguistics principles.

Opis:: This paper focuses on planning a series of activities to train learners of undergraduate, non-philological studies in using a small specialised ad hoc corpus and the results they achieved in doing them. The procedure discussed in this paper is a part of a larger project which investigates the possibility of using a small specialised corpus with ESP learners in improving their written texts. The planned activities are carefully designed to address particular issues either related to the technical aspect of using and reading corpora or to some of the language issues that are (relatively) easily observable in corpus data. The set of devised exercises is referred to as a training programme meant to prepare and guide learners towards the status of more independent corpus users. The training was carried out as a part of an obligatory language course taken by the second year university students of tourism. The paper analyses the learners’ success in dealing with each particular exercise as well as the major challenges encountered in the process. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations for future applications and researches are made.

Opis:: Empirical evaluations of practical teaching units integrating content and language in higher education are rare and deserve more attention. The current article aims to narrow this gap by providing an empirical study of an integrating content and language in higher education (ICLHE, Smit & Dafouz, 2012) teaching module. It investigates the effectiveness of a content-based English for specific purposes module in tertiary aeronautical engineering education, which incorporates recruitment advertisements as online resources. The study adopted a mixed-methods approach and surveyed three aeronautical engineering student groups (N = 141) over three consecutive years on their perceptions of the module’s learning outcomes. This longitudinal survey was complemented by a teacher-assessed writing task and a qualitative content analysis of online recruitment advertisements (N = 80) in a self-built corpus. All three year groups rated the 10 questionnaire statements on a 5-point Likert scale rather equally, thus suggesting a similar perception of academic achievement stemming from the module’s completion. This student view was supported by the results of the writing assignment. In short, the module’s effectiveness was corroborated both quantitatively and qualitatively, which identifies this teaching concept as a feasible way forward.

Opis:: Contrastive terminographyContrastive methods have long been employed in lexicography, in particular in bi- and multilingual dictionary projects. The main rationale for this is the necessity to comprehensively study, i.e. compare and contrast, two or more linguistic systems that are to be presented in one way or another in respective dictionaries. Similarly, the contrastive approach is of paramount importance in terminographic undertakings, on account of the need to draw a distinction between terminological (conceptual) systems existing in various languages and across cultures. It must be emphasised, however, that the contrastive element is not only a part of terminographic practice, but also of the theory of terminography. This article aims to present the role of contrastive research across various spheres of specialised (=LSP) lexicography. Terminografia kontrastywnaMetody kontrastywne stosowane są w słownikarstwie od dawna, w szczególności w odniesieniu do dwu- i wielojęzycznych projektów leksykograficznych, z uwagi na konieczność przeprowadzenia analiz porównawczych dwóch lub więcej systemów językowych, których elementy mają być w konkretny sposób przedstawione/zestawione w słowniku. Badania kontrastywne odgrywają równie ważną rolę w pracy terminograficznej, przede wszystkim ze względu na potrzebę dokonania porównania systemów terminologicznych (pojęciowych) funkcjonujących w różnych językach i kulturach. Należy podkreślić, że elementy analiz kontrastywnych nie są jedynie domeną praktyki – korzysta z nich również teoria terminografii. W artykule przedstawiono rolę badań kontrastywnych na różnych płaszczyznach działalności terminograficznej.
