Opis:
The article presents a concept of gradual cyclical progression of material in the practice-oriented teaching of characteristics of specialised language in translation classes for beginners, which was developed by the author for the course Fundamentals of German-Polish Translation. The starting point for the development of the concept was Roelcke‘s concept of specialised language ([1999] 2020: 69–154) and the context of the course (degree programme, course aims, the profile of the graduate, the situation of translators in the translation market). Next, the concept is presented in terms of the division of material and its implementation in the class, where a gradual cyclical progression of the material discussed was most important, which is justified with examples. Since the concept owes its origin to the everyday practice of translators, the paper is based much more on the translator’s own experience and reflections than on a broader analysis of the relevant literature, which is usually theoretically oriented and does not provide any concrete hints on how theoretical knowledge could be implemented in practice oriented translation teaching.

Opis:
The main focus of this paper is the degree of passivisation in English, French and Polish legal texts, considered as fully representative of specialised discourse, examined in selected original and translated texts. Since it is assumed that typological differences between languages determine users’ choices regarding their selection of passive structures, the very same tendencies should be also reflected in the specialised, legal variant of the language. The aim of this study is to verify this assumption by juxtaposing the research findings from two specialised corpora, namely a comparable corpus and a parallel corpus, both created by the author following corpus linguistics principles.

In the paper the authors attempt to shed light on the problems that occur in the process of international specialised communication, particularly within English, Russian and Polish global corporations. Accordingly, they highlight the link between the quality of specialised communication and the effectiveness of the ways in which global corporations operate. Since this link is mostly dependent on terminology, both the senders and receivers of specialised texts should understand and use it as similarly as possible. Therefore, the authors focus their attention on the specificity of specialised communication as contrasted with everyday communication, causes of the differences in the structure and content of terminology used in various countries, as well as on the strategies of optimisation of terminology at the level of international specialised communication.

This paper focuses on the highest frequency lexical resources within the area of online legal counselling. The research corpus included the content of discussions held around specific problems of legal and judicial character and the attempts to find practical solutions to those problems, found on the Internet forums. The texts in question were classified here as utterances of a legal commentary character and stemming from the legal and judicial language, in opposition to strictly legal communication, which is normative and depersonalized in its nature. This paper takes a closer look at the act of counselling as a linguistic action in both Polish and German linguistics, as well as the characteristics of a specific-content Internet discussion forum as a separate, well-defined genre of text functioning within the world-wide-web and oriented towards the exchange of views and gathering information on a specific topic. Besides their knowledge-broadening functions, these forums are nowadays more frequently becoming the sites for initiating social contacts and interactions. The paper is cultural-contrastive in its character, as the analysed material comes from two parallel sources: Polish and German texts. It aims at identifying discrepancies as well as regularities in online legal advice, including specific lexical items. The conclusions are likely to serve as the basis for defining a specific “linguistic realm” of the Internet forum users in both languages in question, as well as contribute to identifying some current trends in cross-cultural communication based on modern tools and social media.

Armed forces are characterised, among other things, by an extensive process of preparing offi cers to carry out the tasks imposed. Training, and then in-service training in the police, is based primarily on the experience and expertise of those responsible for it. A signifi cant role among police teachers is played by instructors, including police shooting instructors. The article describes the process of acquiring the authority to teach the indicated classes with police offi cers. Additionally, on the basis of evaluation research conducted at the Police Academy in Szczytno, taking into consideration such elements as course program evaluation, acquired knowledge and practical skills, the level of adaptation of the content of specialist course for police shooting instructors to the needs of course participants has been established.

The aim of the study reported in this article was to identify the knowledge or skills deficits which make Polish students of foreign languages fail to understand specialised discourse written in their second language (L2). The author analysed the translations proposed by French philology students for a fragment of a French academic text, particularly the translation errors consisting in source text’s meaning transformation (i.e. misinterpretation, incorrect meaning, nonsense). The analysis allows to assume that these errors are the direct result of insufficient knowledge of the L2 in connection with wrong techniques of words’ meaning verification.

Wyrażona przez Tullio de Mauro opinia o rosnącej ilości anglicyzmów używanych w języku włoskim jest punktem wyjścia rozważań dotyczących leksemów obcojęzycznych rejestrowanych przez kolejne wydania słowników języka włoskiego. Analiza dotyczy terminów wykorzystywanych w języku ekonomii i finansów. Przez lingwistów takich jak Gian Luigi Beccaria, Gaetano Berruto, Alberto Sobrero oraz Maurizio Trifone jest on rozumiany jako jeden z języków specjalistycznych. Ze względu na dużą ilość terminów wykorzystywanych w dyskursie specjalistycznym poświęconym ekonomii ograniczono rozważania do następujących leksemów: credit crunch, rating oraz spread. Rozważania teoretyczne zostaną poparte przykładami z prasy specjalistycznej. Korpus tworzą frazy wyekscerpowane z dziennika „Il sole 24 ore“.
The starting point of discussion on foreign lexemes registered in consecustive editions of Italian dictionaries is the opinion about increasing number of Englishism formulated by Tullio de Mauro. The analysis covers terms used in the Italian language of economics and finance. Gian Luigi Beccaria, Gaetano Berruto, Alberto Sobrero and Maurizio Trifone understand this language as one of the specialised languages. Because of the numerous terms used in specialised discourse devoted to economics, I will narrow the discussion to: credit crunch, rating and spread. The presented Theory will be supported by examples derived from the specialised press. The corpus contains phrases found in „Il sole 24 ore“ journal.

The present paper is the result of a reflection on the professional competences of early childhood teachers. It outlines the considerations on understanding the concept of competences, taking into account their ambiguity and varying semantic scope. The original understanding of specialised artistic competences of the early childhood teachers was presented in conceptual terms and an attempt was made to present the original model of the specialised artistic competences of early childhood teachers in the form of a three-segment structure, created by the distinguished areas of this competence, named by the author as domains of competence, together with their components and basic indicators. The study is addressed to researchers studying this issue and teachers of early school education, it is also supposed to be a voice in the discussion on shaping and development of the specialised artistic competences of early childhood teachers and, according to the author, to encourage reflection in this field.

The present article attempts to discuss whether a medical conference poster intended for a specific English-speaking discourse community shares the properties of discourse colony (Hoey 1986). The author analyses 12 e-posters, which were displayed during an international neurological conference, presenting findings on epilepsy treatment. First, the author characterises the conference poster, which is followed by a description of discourse community and discourse colony. Next, the analysis of the e-posters is carried out and the results of the analysis are presented. On the basis of these results it might be said that the medical conference poster could be considered a discourse colony as it shares some of its properties.

The coronavirus pandemic has undoubtedly left an imprint on various spheres of human existence, not excluding communication, which is a certain refl ection of the reality around us. The aim of this study was to examine the nature of the broadly defi ned discourse concerned with coronavirus in Polishlanguage scientific publications from professional medical journals. The qualitative discourse analysis, which makes it possible to capture the complexity and context of the studied data, was applied to this end. The analysis was carried out using the SketchEngine® tool, which serves the purpose of identifying certain patterns in language. The outcome shows that the examined discourse is characterised by the presence of specialised stories, impersonal nature of the argument, and numerous metaphors, including the metaphor of war.

People from war-torn countries and countries suffering economic hardships are on the move in search of a better life or of a refuge. The host countries are challenged: To ensure equal access to public services, civil and political participation of migrants and refugees means to tear down the language barrier. Only translating and interpreting can offer a realistic, time-sensitive solution to this challenge and give “speechless” communities a voice. It is the objective of the article to investigate the expectations we can have from technology in public service translation compared to the performance of professional communicators; The issue of what a machine can(not) do and to fathom, when a professional translator has to intervene, needs a bottom-up approach and will be discussed against the backdrop of public service translation as domain-specific intercultural communication.

Tatra National Park is the most frequently visited national park in Poland. During the peak season (summer), it attracts both ‘fully aware’ tourists, properly prepared for mountain hiking, and ‘casual’ hikers, motivated mainly by the shallow desire to ‘tick off’ the most popular places in the highest Polish mountains. The article describes the specific character of mountain hikers in Tatra National Park during the summer season, with particular attention paid to the motivations and skills involved in active tourism.

The article aims to analyse the formation and development of women’s secondary education in Volyn in the 19th-early 20th centuries under historical, sociocultural, and religious factors. Methods. The authors describe the historical, sociocultural, and religious situation in Volyn of the late 19th-early 20th centuries and apply comparative diachronic and synchronous analyses of the charters of the educational institutions for girls, their curricula and weekly workload. Systematised pedagogical approaches to teaching and testing students of the analysed schools are used. Results and conclusion. The formation and development of women’s education in Volyn in the 19th-early 20th centuries represents a natural, consistent change in the content and structure of educational processes under certain specific historical conditions. Due to subordination changes in the region, private Orthodox boarding houses for noble girls became widespread in Volyn. Ostroh Women’s Specialised School, founded by Countess Antonina Bludova, underwent a qualitative and structural transformation under the influence of specific historical events. Both Women Count D. Bludov Specialised School and the Bratsvo School aimed to raise a certified woman who can teach children at home and other educational institutions. Analysis of the statutes of educational institutions, programmes of academic disciplines, and weekly workload indicates following the educational sequence principle. In Women Count D. Bludov Specialised School, attention was paid to general disciplines in the first years of study (arithmetics, languages, geography, general history etc.). At the last stage (4th grade), students were taught pedagogy (methodology) directly related to their future profession.

The ongoing debates on the academic status and scope of (meta)lexicography prove that the discipline is undergoing rapid changes. Some scholars voice their doubts about the feasibility of a theory of lexicography, while others have indicated that the development of such a theory is possible within metalexicography, thus qualifying it as a theoretical pillar of lexicography. Still others claim to have already developed a theory. Similar discussions have permeated terminography and its ‘theoretical’ branch, i.e. metaterminography. Therefore, in an attempt to answer some pressing questions regarding the standing of terminography, this paper ventures to define and characterise terminography and metaterminography, as well as discuss some of their fundamental notions. It also aims to present some theoretical considerations that can contribute to a growing body of studies that might one day result in the drafting of a comprehensive and universal theory of terminography.

Epistemic properties of a man constitute the base for change. So far little attention has been paid to those properties in semantics. Questions of epistemic factors, which influence the formation of specialised neologisms, have not been posed. The keynote of this article is the attempt to answer this question. To achieve this goal, I attempt to explain such expressions as ‚neo’, ‚epistemic’ and ‚specialised neologism’. Then I proceed with the presentation of the results of the analysis of an interview. The subject of the interview is the Polish neologism ‚auleta’, created by Maciej Kaziński during his work an the translation of John Landes’ Music in Ancient Greece and Rome.

This paper focuses on planning a series of activities to train learners of undergraduate, non-philological studies in using a small specialised ad hoc corpus and the results they achieved in doing them. The procedure discussed in this paper is a part of a larger project which investigates the possibility of using a small specialised corpus with ESP learners in improving their written texts. The planned activities are carefully designed to address particular issues either related to the technical aspect of using and reading corpora or to some of the language issues that are (relatively) easily observable in corpus data. The set of devised exercises is referred to as a training programme meant to prepare and guide learners towards the status of more independent corpus users. The training was carried out as a part of an obligatory language course taken by the second year university students of tourism. The paper analyses the learners’ success in dealing with each particular exercise as well as the major challenges encountered in the process. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations for future applications and researches are made.

The research issue is to describe the tourist accommodation used for specialised tourism, including its types, distribution and scale, in the northern part of the Eastern Carpathians in the former Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. The authors focused on the 1970s and 1980s which were the ‘golden age’ in the development of tourism in the Soviet Union. As a result of the analysis, 51 accommodation facilities were identified offering nearly 7,300 beds in the mid-1980s. It was the time when the development of that area reached its peak.

W artykule poddano analizie słownictwo specjalistyczne z zakresu architektury wyekscerpowane z Budowy kościołów Piotra Aignera. Ustalono, że 38 nazw (31% badanego materiału) to neologizmy Aignera odpowiadające łacińskim terminom architektonicznym (np. głownik to odpowiednik łac. capitellum; łęk to odpowiednik łac. arcus), nieznane XIX-wiecznej polszczyźniei nieupowszechnione w latach późniejszych. Wykazano, że tworzenie nowych, rodzimych nazw specjalistycznych z zakresu architektury w czasach zaborów należy odczytywać jako przejaw puryzmu językowego, świadectwo traktowania języka jako podstawowego czynnika kształtującego tożsamość narodową.
In the article there is an analysis of specialised vocabulary from the sphere of architecture excerpted from Budowa kościołów written by Piotr Aigner. According to the research 38 names (31% of the investigated material) are neologisms created by Aigner, which are equivalents or translations of their Latin architectural terms (for example, głownik is an equivalent of the Latinword capitellum; łęk – the Latin word arcus), which had not occur in the 19th-century Polish language and were not disseminated later. As it seems creating new speciallised native names in the sphere of architecture when Poland was divided by foreign invaders may be interpreted as a kind of language purism, an example of treating the language as a basic factor that shapes the national identity.

For some time now, a clear turn towards education in the field of specialized languages has been observed in German Studies institutes in Poland. This trend is welcomed by current and prospective students of German. Students see it as the practical dimension of the knowledge acquired during their studies. However, whether their needs in the field of specialized language education are fully satisfied is the question to be examined in this paper which will analyse analyze Programmes in German Studies at Polish universities. The focus will be on the content components of the study programmes offered. The aim of the analysis is to diagnose the current situation and uncover desiderata in this area.

La pandémie de COVID-19 a représenté un « moment discursif » (Moirand) fondamental au cours des dernières décennies ; plus en particulier, cet événement a mis à l’épreuve les concepts partagés de « vérité scientifique » (Charaudeau) et d’« expertise » (Vicari). Cette période a été également marquée par une activité de vulgarisation sans précédent de concepts spécialisés, liés aux domaines de la médecine et de la biologie, mais aussi aux domaines de l’économie et de la vie sociale, notamment à travers les canaux médiatiques (presse, radio, télévision, Internet et réseaux sociaux). L’explication de notions fortement techniques, ainsi que de nouveaux termes issus de la pandémie, a souvent pris des formes variées, parmi lesquelles les tournures définitoires jouent un rôle majeur. Notre contribution se propose de mettre en évidence la fonction de cadrage (framing) que la métaphore peut jouer lorsqu’elle est exploitée comme instrument de définition d’un concept scientifique (Rossi 2018). Nous analyserons à ces fins un corpus de presse française et italienne comprise entre 2020 et 2021, détectant les métaphores utilisées comme reformulations définitoires de concepts liés à la pandémie.
Pandemia COVID-19 stanowiła fundamentalny „moment dyskursywny” (Moirand) w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach; w szczególności wydarzenie to wystawiło na próbę wspólne koncepcje „prawdy naukowej” (Charaudeau) i „wiedzy” (Vicari). Okres ten charakteryzował się również bezprecedensową działalnością popularyzowania specjalistycznych pojęć, związanych z dziedziną medycyny i biologii, ale także z dziedziną ekonomii i życia społecznego, przede wszystkim za pośrednictwem kanałów medialnych (prasa, radio, telewizja, Internet i portale społecznościowe). Wyjaśnianie pojęć wysoce technicznych, a także nowych pojęć wynikających z pandemii przybierało często różne formy, wśród których główną rolę odgrywają strategie definiowania. Nasz wkład ma na celu podkreślenie funkcji ramowej, jaką metafora może pełnić, gdy jest wykorzystywana jako instrument do zdefiniowania koncepcji naukowej (Rossi. W tym celu przeanalizowano korpus prasy francuskiej i włoskiej w latach 2020-2021, wykrywając metafory używane do definiowania przeformułowań pojęć związanych z pandemią.
The COVID-19 pandemic has represented a fundamental ‘discursive moment’ (Moirand) in recent decades; in particular, this event has put to the test the shared concepts of ‘scientific truth’ (Charaudeau) and ‘expertise’ (Vicari). This period has also been marked by unprecedented activity in the popularisation of specialised concepts, linked to the fields of medicine and biology, and also to the fields of economics and social life, notably through media channels (press, radio, television, the Internet and social networks). The explanation of highly technical notions, as well as of new terms resulting from the pandemic, has often taken various forms, among which defining strategies play a major role. Our contribution aims to highlight the framing function that metaphor can play when it is used as an instrument to define a scientific concept (Rossi). To this end, we analyse a corpus of the French and Italian press from 2020 and 2021, detecting the metaphors used to define the reformulations of concepts related to the pandemic.

Na rocznych kursach przygotowawczych dla osób, które zamierzają podjąć studia w Polsce, pojawia się konieczność wprowadzania języka specjalistycznego i harmonijnego łączenia nauki języka z przekazywaniem wiedzy niezbędnej na wybranych kierunkach studiów. Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy nauczania kandydatów na kierunki humanistyczne i przedstawia sposób wprowadzania elementów wiedzy o społeczeństwa do zadań, które służą rozwijaniu oraz sprawdzaniu kompetencji językowych na poziomie B2. Przedstawiane są ćwiczenia leksykalne, gramatyczne, zadania na rozumienie tekstu, a także bodźce wypowiedzi ustnych i pisemnych, które mają przybliżać studentom zasady ordynacji wyborczej, wprowadzać w świat polskiej polityki i propagować pożądane zachowania społeczne. Kształcenie sprawności językowych staje się bowiem dobrą okazją, by upowszechniać wiedzę z określonych dziedzin i kształtować przy tym obywatelską postawę. „Głos po polsku” to zarówno przejaw znajomości języka, jak i aktywności społecznej, do której warto zachęcać młodzież.
During preparatory courses for foreigners who intend to study in Poland, there is a need to introduce a specialised language variety and harmoniously combine teaching language with the transfer of knowledge necessary in selected fields of study. This article concerns the teaching of candidates planning to undertake the studies in humanities. It presents the manner of introducing the elements of civics to the tasks that serve to develop and test language competences at the B2 level. It presents lexical and grammatical exercises, text comprehension tasks and stimuli to oral and written assignments, which are to familiarise students with the principles of the Polish electoral law, introduce them to the world of Polish politics and promote the desired social behaviours. The training of language skills becomes an excellent opportunity to disseminate knowledge in specific fields and, at the same time, shape civic attitudes. Thus, voting can be thought of as the manifestation of both language skills and social activity which young people should be encouraged to undertake.

Opis:
By way of this article the author seeks to construe epistemological semantics. To this end the author presents his arguments in several aspects as regards a) concepts, b) terms, c) subject matter, d) methods and e) analysis of expressions excerpted from texts. The author’s concept is based on hypotheses employed in anthropocentric linguistics and frame semantics. One of the building blocks of epistemological semantics is constituted by so called epistemic formants of knowledge, understood as the foundation of epistemic experience, as the base for the frames of epistemic knowledge, and hence also as the framework for the constitution of meanings and expressions formed by an individual. As important seem a strict delimitation of the subject area of epistemological semantics and the defining of resultant tasks to be undertaken by linguists. It transpires that both the subject area and the resultant tasks have up till now been restricted almost exclusively to ‘meaning’, without clear reference to the underlying cognitive acts. Methods of the work are rooted in idiocentric (individual) and polycentric (common) approaches known in linguistics. The results of the empirical analysis have been presented and exemplified by a selected specialised neologism from the field of music of Ancient Greece.
