- The article deals with modern trends in the development of cities and consequent social changes, including the changes in the leisure sector. It identifies the spatial categories of tourism systems, including those of the metropolitan area of Bialystok. The article discusses, on the basis of the carried out empirical research, the level of the needs of the residents of Bialystok metropoly as far as leisure is concerned, especially the level of spatial tourist systems situated around Bialystok and the way they are exploited. Various aspects of communication, tourist infrastructure and recreational market have been presented and evaluated. Several weaknesses have been pointed out, along with the resultant dangers.
